Pak skipper Younis Khan fractures finger

Benoni (South Africa), Sep.19 (ANI): Pakistan cricket team’s Champions Trophy dreams suffered a major set back when captain Younis Khan fractured his finger during a warm-up match against Sri Lanka here.

Doctors have advised Khan complete rest for the next three days. It is unsure whether he will be playing in the next two practice games on Saturday and Sunday.

Notwithstanding Khan’s injury, Pakistan, however, trounced Sri Lanka by 108 runs in the first warm-up match ahead of eight nation tournament.

The Pakistan team is staying in Johannesburg’s Santon Sun Hotel while in South Africa.

Team manager Yawar Saeed has expressed satisfaction over the security arrangement.

“Over half a dozen security guards have been deputed to guard the floor where Pakistan team is staying. I think in recent times this is one of the best security cover the team is provided with,” The News quoted Saeed, as saying. (ANI)

Pak cricket team manager to quit after Champions Trophy

Karachi, Sep.17 (ANI): Controversial Pakistan cricket team manager, Yawar Saeed, has said that he would quit from his post after the ICC Champions Trophy.

Interacting with media persons before leaving for South Africa, Saeed said he has already informed Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Ijaz Butt about his decision.

“I wanted to step down after we returned from the tour of Sri Lanka. But the chairman asked me to continue for the Champions Trophy. Since the Champions Trophy is a big event and there is lot of work involved in it for the manager specially while dealing with the media, I accepted this last assignment as manager,” Saeed said.

The 74 year old cricket official said that he wanted to devote more time to his family and his business and that is why he has decided to step down.

“I have managed the national team on several tours many of them very successful ones. So there is really no real desire left to be manager anymore. But I am always willing to serve Pakistan cricket in any other capacity,” The Dawn quoted Saeed, as saying.

He also refused reports regarding altercations between him and the board or the players.

‘There are absolutely no problems between me and the board or with the players. I have managed some of the top players and they have always been respectful towards me. It has been a rewarding experience,” Saeed added.

Saeed has been facing criticism for his way of working and his old age. He came under attack especially after the way he handled the controversy regarding the reports about the presence of Indian bookies inside the hotel where the Pakistani team was staying during the recent Sri Lanka series. Pak team manager “disappointed and frustrated over under performance” in Lanka series

Islamabad, Aug.18 (ANI): Disappointed over the disastrous tour of Sri Lanka, Pakistan cricket team’s manager Yawar Saeed has admitted that the team under-performed during the recently concluded series.

“Yes I’m disappointed and frustrated with the overall performance. It was an under par performance,” Saeed said.

When asked about the match fixing allegations during the series, Saeed told PakPassion.net that all stories regarding the issue were baseless.

“There was nothing untoward regarding the players, they behaved impeccably. I spoke to all of the players and instructed them not to associate themselves with any individuals whom they were not familiar with and they followed my instructions. I have no idea whether any bookies were stopping at the hotel or not,” Saeed said.

Saeed said he has given his report to the International Cricket Council (ICC) regarding the match fixing issue, and was pleased to know that the apex cricketing council endorsed his views that no Pakistani cricketer was involved in the issue.

“I gave my report to the ICC and they investigated matters and I’m pleased that they concluded that there was no such incident involving Pakistan players and any bookmakers,” he said. (ANI)

PCB set to revamp Pak team management following Sri Lankan debacle

Karachi, Aug. 8 (ANI): Following the Pakistan cricket team’s dismal Sri Lankan tour, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is expected to overhaul the team management.

The News quoted PCB sources, as saying that the team’s manager and assistant manager are likely to be sacked, while the coach and captain will be asked for an explanation once the team returns home on August 13.

Pakistan lost the three-match Test series against Sri Lanka 0-2. It is the first time ever that Pakistan have lost a Test series in Sri Lanka. Continuing the rout, Sri Lanka won the five-match one-day series against Pakistan 3-0.

Another question that the team management may find difficult to answer is-reports surfacing that bookies tried to contact the Pakistani players in Galle and Colombo during the Test series, the report said.

Team manager Yawar Saeed had confirmed the reports initially, but after getting a dressing down from the PCB top brass, he denied them, it added.

According to sources, Saeed, 73, was made team manager because of his proximity with PCB chairman Ijaz Butt, but his failure to deal with sensitive issues has made it clear that he is not the right man for the job.

Similarly, assistant manager Mohammad Ahmed has also been asked to quit the post.

Some influential officials in the PCB governing board are also gunning for the resignation of Intikhab Alam, the team’s coach, the paper said.

Some critics believe that captain Younis Khan is also responsible for the spate of defeats in Sri Lanka as he has failed to unite the team even after a stunning title-winning triumph in the ICC World Twenty20 championship in England last month, it added.

Sources, however, said that the fate of the duo will be decided after Butt holds separate meetings with Intikhab and Younis next week. (ANI)

Former Test player Iqbal Qasim likely to be appointed chief selector

Karachi, July 13 (ANI): The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is likely to appoint former Test cricketer Iqbal Qasim as the chairman of the national cricket team’s selection committee.

According to sources, PCB chief Ijaz Butt will hold talks with Qasim today (Monday) to discuss various issues, including his (Qasim’s) appointment to the post, The News reports.

The chief selector’s post has been lying since former leg spinner Abdul Qadir resigned a month ago, citing incompatibility with the PCB.

Qadir had then criticized the omission of fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar from the World T20 Championship squad.

He accused coach Intikhab Alam and team manager Yawar Saeed of being behind the pacer’s exit from the squad. (ANI)

Shoaib’s anti-PCB rant may be final nail in his coffin

Lahore, July 11 (ANI): The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) may take disciplinary action against controversial fast Shoaib Akhtar for his remarks on the board’s decision to axe him from the World Twenty20 Championship team.

The final decision in this regard would be taken by the PCB chairman Ijaz Butt, The Daily Times reports.

When enquired about the issue, Butt said he is not fully aware about what Akhtar had actually said during the television interview.

Butt said he would be going through the whole statement of Akhtar, and would then decide whether the statements tantamount to violation of the player’s central contract.

According to sources, Butt would seek views of other senior board officials before penalizing Akhtar.

Akhtar, during the television chat show, had described the former PCB chairman Nasim Ashraf, as a ‘second grade person’, and said that all the previous administrators had done nothing but ruined the game in the country.

Akhtar said he still has many years of cricket left in him and claimed that there has been a conspiracy to malign his image.

He said that he thought of suing the board for denying him a place in the World T20 Championship squad, but decided against it on Butt’s advice.

The 34 year old speedster was axed from the World T20 Championship squad after a PCB medical panel declared him unfit due to a skin infection.

Following Akhtar’s ouster from the team, chief selector Abdul Qadir also resigned from the post alleging that coach Intikhab Alam and team manager Yawar Saeed were behind the move to drop Akhtar. (ANI)

Shoaib in eye of storm after threatening to sue PCB for World Twenty20 axe

Lahore, July 8 (ANI): One can not keep controversial Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar away from news, and like earlier occasions, this time too the speedster is in the news for all wrong reasons, as he has threatened to take legal action against the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

Akhtar, who is on a PCB central contract, has reportedly said that he reserves the right to sue the board over its decision of not including him in the World Twenty20 Championship squad.

Akhtar, during a television chat show, said he still has many years of cricket left in him and claimed that there has been a conspiracy to malign his image.

He has once again invited trouble by criticizing the board, because players under the central contract are not supposed to challenge its decisions in the media.

Following Akhtar’s ouster from the team, chief selector Abdul Qadir also resigned from the post alleging that coach Intikhab Alam and team manager Yawar Saeed were behind the move to drop Akhtar. (ANI)

Now, Sarfaraz bays for PCB boss Butt and his cronies’ blood

Islamabad, July 1 (ANI): The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairperson Ijaz Butt is under attack from all spheres.

After the sports minister Pir Aftab Jilani held the PCB’s top brass responsible for losing the hosting rights of 2011 World Cup, former Test cricketer Sarfaraz Nawaz has now criticized Butt and his close aides for the persistent mismanagement in the board.

Nawaz said Butt and his associates were trying to cash on Pakistan’s World T20 win for their own benefit.

“Ijaz Butt and his cronies are trying to misuse the Twenty20 World Cup victory to save their seats. There is no role of Ijaz and his management in the victory of the national team but they are trying to take credit,” The Daily Times quoted Nawaz, as saying.

Nawaz also lashed out at coach Intikhab Alam and manager Yawar Saeed, and said both of them are involved in ‘dirty politics’ in the team.

He claimed that captain Younis Khan has problems with the coach and asked for a change.

“As far as I know, Younis has asked for a change of coach and his demand should be accepted now especially when he has proved his leadership abilities by gifting the nation the World Cup,” he said.

Nawaz was particularly furious over the PCB’s failure to save 2011 World Cup matches from being shifted out from Pakistan.

“The PCB could not save the World Cup 2011 matches and presently it has no support in international cricket community. Even countries like Bangladesh and India, which were our allies in the past, have deceived us. What else the present management wants to give to Pakistan cricket,” he said.

Nawaz urged the government to replace the PCB’s top management with ‘young and energetic’ professionals. (ANI)

PCB forced to award contract to pacer Abdul Rauf

Karachi, Jan 12 (ANI): The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) was forced to review its central contracts’ list by including young fast bowler Abdul Rauf in it after the pacer complained in various television interviews that he was treated in an unjust manner.

A PCB spokesman said on Sunday that chief selector Abdul Qadir recommended a C-category contract for Rauf and later the Board chairman, Ijaz Butt, approved the player’s inclusion in the list.

Rauf’s inclusion in the elite list came just a day after the pacer complained of unfair treatment meted out to him by the PCB, The News reported.

“I am really sad at not being considered for the contract. I don’t understand why they ignored me,” Rauf said in one of the interviews.

Rauf made his One-day International debut last February against Zimbabwe. He has so far played four ODIs, collecting eight wickets at 26.50.

He was not the only one disappointed after seeing the 26-man list. A number of other talented cricketers were also ignored.

There were also reports that two of the three national selectors were not even consulted over the central contracts.

It was alleged that chief selector Qadir prepared the list all by himself without taking advice from fellow selectors Shoaib Mohammad and Saleem Jaffer.

Pakistan coach Intikhab Alam, manager Yawar Saeed and Qadir were the three officials given the task to prepare the list.

Unlike the previous list that was based on performance, the new contracts were based on seniority and even cricketers who did not play a single match for Pakistan in 2008 were given A-category contracts. (ANI)
