Alonso reveals real reason behind his decision to quit Liverpool

London, Sep 3 (ANI): Spanish midfielder Xabi Alonso, who knew that his time at Liverpool was up a year ago, has now revealed the full details behind a dramatic 28 million pounds Anfield exit.

Alonso admits the decision to skip a Champions League match for the birth of his son almost three years ago caused a rift with manager Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez.

And the midfielder admits he found it hard to accept being classed as a cash cow when Benitez tried to sell him a year ago, The Sun reports.

Alonso, 27, is now one of the next generation of Real Madrid ‘Galacticos’ after his switch last month. But only now has he spoken out about his relationship with fellow Spaniard Benitez – and the joy of feeling wanted at Real.

“It was a tough call and a very difficult decision to make after five years at the club. I have always said that it has been a professional relationship. I have always tried to do what he asked me to do, to try to deliver on the pitch, to do the talking on the pitch,” he said.

Benitez made no secret of wanting to bring Gareth Barry to the club from Aston Villa last year.

Alonso was identified as the valuable asset to fund the move. The deal did not materialise and Barry ended up joining Manchester City in the most recent transfer window.

“Last summer when the club proposed I had to be sold to get funds to sign new players. It was difficult to accept that. I accept it as a professional but that moment probably changed my mind – and I thought, maybe, from that moment it was maybe time for a change,” Alonso said.

Benitez did little to disguise his displeasure with playmaker Alonso when he opted out of a Champions League last-16 second leg at Inter Milan with Liverpool leading 2-0 to be with his pregnant wife.

Alonso said: “When the birth of my child happened, I had to make a decision. I had to be with my family as it was a very important moment.” (ANI)

Real Madrid rules out bid for Liverpool’s Alonso

London, July 8 (ANI): Spanish football club Real Madrid seems to have lost interest in Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso.

The Spanish giants, who have spent around 180-million-pounds this summer, claim they cannot afford the midfielder.

Real wanted Alonso to provide the chances for their new strike trio of Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, and Karim Benzema.

But general director Jorge Valdano said: “Alonso is a priority if he fits into our budget and this doesn’t seem the case.

“Liverpool have taken up a difficult stance over Alonso. I don’t like to talk about the private details of negotiations. We are studying many alternatives,” The Sun quoted Valdano, as saying further. (ANI)

Real Madrid’s 55 million pounds bid for Franck Ribery

Madrid, July 5 (ANI): Spanish football giant Real Madrid’s astonishing summer of transfer window continued with a 55 million pounds offer for Bayern Munich mid-fielder Franck Ribery.

The Los Galacticos have offered Dutch stars Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder in exchange for Ribery, which amounts to 40 million pounds. The rest of the amount is supposed to be paid in cash, the Daily Star reports.

Ribery has also been the primary target of Barcelona, Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal.

But his first choice, if he leaves Germany, is to join the latest team of Real Madrid.

According to reports, Real Madrid has so far spent about 182 million pounds on Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Karim Benzema, and Raul Albiol.

Real has also been in talks with Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso, whom they have offered a 20 million poinds contract. (ANI)

Chelsea’s Lampard hails Barca’s Messi

London, May 3 (ANI): Chelsea’s Frank Lampard has hailed Barcelona’s Lionel Messi as the best player on the planet.

According to The Sun, the England star believes Messi will be the biggest threat to the Blues’ hopes of clinching a place in the Champions League final.

Lampard said: “Barcelona are a formidable team. They have such attacking strength with Messi, Henry and Eto’o. And in midfield they have Iniesta and Xabi driving them forward. The passing and movement of them all is top, top drawer.”

“But I rate Messi the best. He is the best player in the world without a shadow of a doubt. By a country mile in fact. He is absolutely fantastic. OK, I don’t think in the first leg he delivered what people were expecting of him. But believe me the man is a genius and he can explode with a piece of magic that can change a game. He wasn’t in top form at the Nou Camp. That could make him all the more determined to produce at the Bridge,” he added.

“So whoever plays at left-back for us will have to be at their very best to deal with him.”

Lampard says Chelsea are buoyed after securing a 0-0 result in Spain but says the semi-final is still too close to call.

He added: “I don’t think anyone is favourite to go through, the match is just so evenly balanced.” (ANI)

Liverpool win at Hull to keep title hopes alive; Hope for West Brom

London – Liverpool kept their title hopes alive with a 3-1 win at Hull City on Saturday as they moved back above Manchester United on goal difference at the top of the English Premier League. A first-half strike from Xabi Alonso set Liverpool on their way and two goals from Dirk Kuyt sealed the points, though champions United can go back three points clear at the top, with a game still in hand, if they beat Tottenham Hotspur later on Saturday.

Chelsea are three points behind the top two after they won 1-0 at West Ham United, while bottom side West Bromwich Albion gave themselves a glimmer of hope in their battle for survival by beating Sunderland 3-0 at the Hawthorns.

Alonso smashed a rebound from his own free kick late in the first half of their match at Hull and things then got worse for the home side when Caleb Folan was sent off after
58 minutes for kicking out at Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel.

Dirk Kuyt then doubled their lead with a header four minutes later but Geovanni pulled one back with 18 minutes to go thanks to a neat finish after good work from Daniel Cousin.

Fernando Torres headed against the crossbar from close range but Kuyt made sure of the points with his side’s third late on, leaving Hull still just three points ahead of the relegation zone, with four games to go.

Salomon Kalou’s second-half goal put Chelsea in front at Upton Park but the striker turned into the villain with 20 minutes to go when he conceded a penalty for pulling back Herita Ilunga.

However, Petr Cech came to his rescue with a fine save from Mark Noble’s spot-kick and Chelsea took the points.

West Brom remain bottom but now only two points behind Newcastle and six points away from safety after goals from Jonas Olsson, Chris Brunt and Juan Carlos Menseguez gave them a 3-0 win over Sunderland.

Robinho and Stephen Ireland scored the goals as Manchester City won 2-1 at Everton for only their second away win of the season, while Stoke are still not totally safe after their 1-0 loss at Fulham.

Fifth-placed Aston Villa were held to a 1-1 draw at Bolton Wanderers in the day’s other match. (dpa)

Liverpool hammer Blackburn to go top of the table

London – Liverpool cruised to a 4-0 victory over a hapless Blackburn Rovers side on Saturday to move two points clear of Manchester United at the top of the English Premier League. Fernando Torres scored two first-half goals, Daniel Agger banged in a third and David Ngog scored the fourth as Liverpool piled the pressure on United.

Champions United have two games in hand, though, and can return to the top if they win at Sunderland later on Saturday.

Having lost 3-1 at home to Chelsea in the Champions League on Wednesday, Liverpool needed to bounce back and they did just that with a commanding win that could easily have resulted in a bigger margin of victory.

Steven Gerrard was left on the bench as he nurses an adductor injury, but Liverpool were ahead within four minutes through a stunning goal from Torres.

Feeding onto a chipped pass by Jamie Carragher and turned and fired an unstoppable volley over Paul Robinson.

Torres missed a couple of gilt-edged chances to add to the lead before he headed home from a pinpoint Xabi Alonso free-kick.

Liverpool eased off after half-time and Christopher Samba almost pulled one back with 15 minutes to go, but he slipped when shooting and his effort was easily saved by Reina.

Agger made them pay with a superb long-range strike on 83 minutes and substitute Ngog headed in from close range just before the end of the 90 minutes. (dpa)

Chelsea stun Liverpool to put one foot in last four

Liverpool – Chelsea have one foot in the last four of the Champions League after they stunned Liverpool 3-1 at Anfield on Wednesday.

Fernando Torres put Liverpool ahead after just six minutes but Chelsea were the better side after that and two goals from defender Branislav Ivanovic and one from Didier Drogba completed a well-earned victory.

Five-time champions Liverpool will need a massive performance now in the second leg at Stamford Bridge if they are to even stand a chance of progressing.

The two teams were meeting in the Champions League for the fifth season in a row, with Liverpool having won in 2005 (on their way to winning the Cup) and 2007 but Chelsea advancing last season.

Liverpool went into the match on the back of five straight wins in all competitions and it looked like it might be another great European night for them when they took the lead in the fifth minute.

After Chelsea failed to clear their area, the ball dropped to Dirk Kuyt, whose clever flick released Alvaro Arbeloa. The Spaniard squared the ball to his compatriot Torres, whose finish gave Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech no chance.

Chelsea almost responded immediately when Fabio Aurelio dallied on the ball and Drogba found himself one-on-one with Jose Reina, but the Liverpool goalkeeper stood strong and blocked his shot.

Drogba blasted an even better chance over the bar with his left foot but Chelsea were beginning to get into the match, with the Ivory Coast striker giving Jamie Carragher a torrid time, while Michael Essien was not allowing Steven Gerrard any room.

And on 38 minutes, their pressure told as Branislas Ivanovic evaded the Liverpool defence to head a Florent Malouda corner past Reina.

Gerrard shot just wide three minutes into the second half while at the other end, Carragher cleared a Drogba shot off the line before Torres blasted a decent chance too high.

Terry was then booked for a pointless challenge on Reina, meaning he will miss the second leg, but Chelsea’s disappointment turned to joy when Ivanovic scored his second goal in almost identical fashion, firing an unstoppable header into the net.

Liverpool looked stunned but they were then left dumbstruck when Michael Ballack fed Malouda, whose perfect cross was hammered in by Drogba five minutes later.

Rafael Benitez brought on Yossi Benayoun, Andrea Dossena and eventually Ryan Babel, for the disappointing Lucas, but the changes had little effect.

Xabi Alonso tested Cech with a long-range effort, but Chelsea kept their advantage to take a massive step towards the semi-finals. (dpa)
