Beauty pageant moms sue over talk show fracas

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – The mothers of some beauty pageant contestants say they were tricked into appearing on a TV talk show and then accused of physically and sexually abusing their children.

U.S. | Television | Media

Five women are claiming in a new lawsuit filed in Illinois county court that the Tribune Broadcasting Co. and producers of “The Big Willie Show” fraudulently induced them to appear by claiming the show would portray them in a positive light. The talk show appears on WGN in Chicago and is hosted by Bill Cunningham.

On June 11, the moms allegedly were filmed getting ready for a pageant. The next day, they arrived at the studio for the show’s taping. Then came the surprise allegations as the studio audience allegedly verbally accosted the plaintiffs. Then it got even weirder.

According to the complaint, the children were backstage as the mothers suffered the wrath of the studio audience. Cunningham then wanted to bring the children out. Unfortunately, they had gone missing.

The mothers searched the greenroom. They say they eventually found their children as one of the show’s producers “intentionally touched (a child) in an unwanted fashion.”

The mothers refused to go back out. Producers then “began kicking in the door to the greenroom in an attempt to force the plaintiffs back on stage after the plaintiffs had locked themselves in a room to protect their children,” according to the complaint.

The women are now suing Tribune, Cunningham, the producer and others for battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligent misrepresentation, and violating their rights of publicity. They demand at least $50,000.

The episode was one of the first of the new “Big Willie Show,” being advertised by WGN as filling the void of Jerry Springer’s departure. In fact, according to the show’s web site, Springer’s old staff is working on the show.

Raina promises a field day

To say that being in-charge of the Indian team is one of the most daunting propositions in world cricket may not quite seem like overstating the fact. Of the many responsibilities an Indian cricket captain is faced with, it is often the relentless and hard-to-please media back home, which proves to be a stiffer and unforgiving challenge than any opposition he comes across on the field.

At least, Suresh Raina, who will become the 20 th ODI captain for India-and the first from Uttar Pradesh- in Zimbabwe, passed his first test satisfactorily, displaying a calm exterior during his first-ever pre-tour press conference in Mumbai on Tuesday evening.

When asked-on a number of occasions-if regular Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni-who also leads Chennai Super Kings, the IPL franchise that Raina represents-had passed down any tips, the 24-year-old left-hander only revealed that he was asked to keep things simple. And while it remains to be seen whether Raina does heed his skipper’s advice when it comes to the action in Zimbabwe or not, he did stick to it during the press-briefing by keeping his responses ‘simple’ and cliched.

“It is a great opportunity, and I am looking forward to the challenge,” got reiterated by Raina at least four times the number of international games that his young pace-attack has managed between them for India.

And his opinions remained the same regarding both his personal goals as well as that of his young team.

Getting the opportunity at such a young age though did come as a pleasant surprise, believed Raina, and he expected his team to live up to their billing of the second-best ODI team in the world. “It was always a dream but it is a great responsibility. The seniors don’t often take breaks from the game and now that they have, it is up to the bench-strength to rise and do well. A good performance here will go a long way in enhancing their future opportunities,” he explained.

While almost the entire Indian team faced the wrath of the media following their disappointing exit from the World T20, Raina was the only one left unscathed. After all he was the only Indian batsman to have totaled three-figures in the tournament, finishing with over 200 runs, including a century against South Africa. He believed that it was up to the likes of Rohit Sharma, Yusuf Pathan, Murali Vijay and Virat Kohli to rise to the occasion and make the most of the seniors’ absence.

“They have all scored a lot of runs in the IPL and in domestic cricket but the onus is on them to replicate that form for India now,” said Raina.

Of the many criticisms that were stacked against the Indian team, it was their poor fielding that came under the scanner the most. But Raina believed his young team would prove a more athletic unit in the field. “We will run harder and are fitter. And if we score a total of 240-250, we will make it look like a 280+ target with our fielding,” said the new Indian captain. With conditions expected to assist fast bowling, Raina believed his team’s strength would be his pace-bowling department led by the inexperienced lot of Umesh Yadav, Vinay Kumar, Pankaj Singh and Ashok Dinda. “We have bowlers like Umesh who have pace and can trouble the opposition batsmen in those conditions,” he said.

Unlike Dhoni or most of his predecessors, Raina at least signed off on an optimistic note rather than sticking to a well-rehearsed diplomatic tone, insisting that there were no weaknesses in his side and that returning with the trophy was his sole objective as an Indian captain.

‘Boobquake’ cleric defends earthquake-promiscuity link

Washington, May 15 (ANI): The Iranian cleric, who claimed last month that promiscuity and immodest dress cause earthquakes, has defended his argument.

Kazem Sedighi insists God may be holding off on natural disasters in the West in order to let people sin more and relegate themselves to hell.

Sedighi’s preaching created a buzz on the web last month, as blogger Jennifer McCreight of Indiana asked women to show as much cleavage as possible through a Facebook page named Boobquake, reports Fox News.

Seidighi had said: “Many women who do not dress modestly … lead young men astray, corrupt their chastity and spread adultery in society, which (consequently) increases earthquakes.”

Now, the cleric is back defending his concept.

Sedighi notes that some might ask why there aren”t more earthquakes and storms striking Western nations that are “up to their necks” in immorality.

He says the answer is that God allows some of those who “provoke His wrath” to continue sinning “so that they (eventually) go to the bottom of Hell.”

Meanwhile, on the lines of ‘Boobquake,’ a new Facebook group called for ‘Brainquake’, a day for women to “show off their resumes, CVs, honors, prizes, and accomplishments.” (ANI)

‘All powerful’ Rehman Malik in whitewash mode to quash cases against him

Islamabad, May 12 (ANI): Pakistan Interior Minister Rehman Malik has been accused of tampering with cases filed against him and for targeting officers who are not ready to toe his line.

The official record of the 1996 cases against Malik has started to disappear and FIA officials who arrested and handled him back in 1996 are now facing his wrath.

A director of FIA in Peshawar confirmed to The News that the record relating to the minister had been misplaced and it is being reconstructed, but he denied they had tampered with the previous record.

The officials have been punished and harassed so much that they have now come on record to publicly complain that the all-powerful Interior Minister is targeting them.

Tariq Malik, FIA’s deputy director, who has twice been demoted after he refused to tamper with the record about the charge sheeting of the minister, has now been transferred to Quetta from Islamabad.

Tariq being an FIA inspector had filed a source report in 1996 that led to the registration of an FIR No. 14/96 against Malik, alleging that he received two Honda cars as a bribe from Toyota Company.

The Interior Minister’s staff officer summoned Tahir Malik in the ministry six weeks ago and interrogated him on how he came to know about the cars and how was it a bribe. The staff officer then demanded of Malik that he alter his statement to help Rehman Malik get acquitted.

When he refused, in a space of two weeks, he was not only demoted again but also transferred to Quetta, a station that is seeing the pullout of all Punjabi FIA staffers after some of them were murdered there.

All these cases against Rehman Malik stand reopened after the revocation of the NRO but since the FIA is the executing agency, it is lending crucial support to cover up the past cases against their current boss.

Likewise, Sardar Azam, another assistant director, now retired, who had arrested Rehman Malik the day FIR No 14/96 was registered against him, has stated on record that his pension is being delayed as punishment. (ANI)

Q+A – Will the stalemate continue in Thailand?

Thai anti-government activists showed no signs of ending their two-month protest in downtown Bangkok on Tuesday, despite their acceptance of a proposal to hold an early election in November.

Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban reported to law enforcement officials early on Tuesday to hear complaints lodged by the families of protesters killed in a clash with troops on April 10, apparently in response to a demand by the “red shirt” leaders.

But it appeared the protesters were not satisfied with Suthep’s action and demanded he be formally charged for allegedly giving the order to use deadly force to quell the demonstration, dashing hopes for a swift end to the stalemate.

IS THE RECONCILIATION DEAL STILL ON THE TABLE?

Officially, the deal is still on, but it is unlikely the government will agree to the latest counter-proposals from the red shirts. An immediate resolution is unlikely and the protest will likely drag on.

Despite the red shirts’ claim they are committed to Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva’s five-point reconciliation plan, their demands have placed the government in a tricky position.

The movement has agreed to a Nov. 14 election but want to ensure the authorities are held accountable for the deaths of 20 demonstrators during the army’s botched attempt to clear another protest site in Bangkok’s historic heart. The red shirt leaders, who are wanted on terrorism charges, say they are willing to face justice, but demand that others involved in the violence must also be brought to book.

WHAT’S THE GOVERNMENT’S RESPONSE?

Abhisit on Sunday pleaded with the red shirts to agree to his proposal, which he said was “non-negotiable”. He has not responded to their counter-demand, which a government spokesman said was “unclear”.

Analysts say the demand will likely be ignored since it would humiliate the government, which would incur the wrath of rival “yellow shirt” demonstrators and Bangkok’s middle classes, who have urged it not to cave in to red shirt pressure. Suthep has no parliamentary immunity having quit as a lawmaker due to a conflict of interest. It is highly unlikely charges will be brought against him. The government insists his appearance at the Department of Special Investigation was planned in advance and was not in response to the protesters’ demands.

CAN THE RED SHIRTS SUSTAIN THEIR PROTEST?

Countless times, the government has assumed the red shirts would run out of steam and the protest would fizzle out, but it has been wrong. It has become clear that Abhisit cannot simply wait it out, especially given the immense damage to the economy and the reputation of his government and the army.

The nine-week protest reached its peak in mid-March, with tens of thousands of rural people camping out in Bangkok’s streets. Although the bulk have returned to their farms and villages, the red shirts have tapped into the urban poor in Bangkok. Most are rural migrants — like security guards, cleaners, taxi drivers and labourers — and they are keeping the rally alive.

The numbers may have dropped off since the red shirts pledged to enter the peace process, but the movement has shown it can rapidly mobilise tens of thousands of people in the city and the provinces if it needs reinforcements.

HOW HAVE THE MARKETS RESPONDED?

Traders and investors are optimistic a solution can be reached, but remain cautious. Thailand’s stock market initially jumped over 4 percent after the announcement of a reconciliation process, but the continued standoff and renewed violence at the weekend, combined with a crisis in the eurozone, have curtailed gains.

Foreign investors, who were net buyers for almost seven weeks from late February, drawn by cheap stocks and high dividend yields, have been net sellers for the last four sessions, offloading a combined 14.5 billion baht of stocks ($449 million) suggesting political unease is taking its toll.

“It’s still not clear that all red shirt leaders will respond positively to the government’s reconciliation plan. So far, news flows are mixed and this kind of uncertainty will fuel more foreign fund outflows,” said Warut Siwasariyanon, head of research at Finansia Syrus Securities.

The baht was steady at around 32.28 per dollar in fairly active morning trade on Tuesday. Traders said external factors had an impact more than the domestic political impasse.

Pak illegal Gurudwara land transfer ‘whistleblower’ demoted

Islamabad, Apr.22 (ANI): A Pakistani official of joint secretary rank in the Ministry of Minorities had to face the wrath of his seniors for exposing an illegal transfer of Gurudwara land to the Defence Housing Society (DHA) by the Evacuee Trust Board of Pakistan (ETBP).

Munir Ahmed Chaudhry paid the price for blowing the whistle on the ‘dirty’ land transfer deal, when he was transferred from the ministry and demoted to an officer on special duty (OSD) rank by the Establishment Division (ED).

The issue of transfer of 575 kanals of Sikh Gurdwara land to DHA, Lahore was even raised in the Indian Parliament in December last year, with New Delhi asking Islamabad to investigate the issue regarding the illegal transfer of minorities land.

Following India’s concerns, the Minorities Ministry had appointed Chaudhry to head a two member inquiry committee, which later conformed that the land transfer was indeed illegal, dirty and should be reviewed to ‘save Pakistan’s image,’ The News reports.

Meanwhile, Secretary Minorities Ministry, Javed Akhtar, has defended Munir’s sudden transfer, and said it had nothing to do with the land transfer report.

When asked that how Munir was made an OSD on the day the report was published in the daily, Akhtar reiterated that it had nothing to with the findings of the inquiry report, and that his transfer orders were sent days ago.

ED’s Secretary, Ismail Qureshi, has refused to speak over the issue. (ANI)

Ballack dismisses Mourinho as history ahead of clash with Inter Milan

London, Mar 15 (ANI): Chelsea midfielder Michael Ballack has dismissed former boss Jose Mourinho as history and called upon his club to look to the future.

The Blues must overcome a 2-1 deficit at Stamford Bridge tomorrow to send Inter Milan and their former boss crashing out of the Champions League.

It was the only trophy Mourinho failed to win at Chelsea and Ballack believes they can go one better under Carlo Ancelotti, The Sun reports.

The German captain said: “You can only make history if you win something. Jose won two League titles, of course, that is why he is so popular here.

“But that is history and now we have a new coach, with new players as well. This competition is the one we couldn”t win until now. So that is why we are so hungry.”

Ballack signed in 2006 and played one season with Mourinho before the boss was sacked.

And he risked the further wrath of former boss when he suggested Ancelotti’s record of two Champions League titles is an advantage now.

Ballack said: “It’s a big plus because we have an experienced side but most of the players have not won the Champions League. But our coach has won it twice, that”s why we look up to him and that’s why we listen to him.” (ANI)

Taliban back to terror business from new stronghold near Mardan-Swat Highway

Islamabad, Sep.16 (ANI): The Taliban’s threat has still not subsided in the Swat and Malakand Divisions as the security forces have found that the extremists have created a new stronghold in the region and are planning strikes from there.

According to senior officials, the Taliban, after being forced to retreat following the military operation, have shifted their base to the rough terrains between Batkhela and Jalala on the Mardan-Swat Highway and trying to regroup.

“It is from here that they are building their arms arsenals, training camps, logistics and propaganda centres,” officials said.

Over 200 people in the region have received handwritten and typed death threats in the past fortnight which proves that the Taliban is alive and kicking here.

“We are aware of how you assist security agencies and act against Islam. You are going to face the wrath of God,” one of the letter stated.

One of such threat mail has also been received by former North West Frontier Province (NWFP) Minister, Kamal Shah, who said the extremists have taken refuge in Shergarh, Batkhela, Chakdara, Iroshah, Shakh Number Panch, Jabban Road, Palai Sherkhanai, Sakhakot, Jalala and other villages on the Highway and are waiting to strike.

Security officials said they are aware of the development and the threat mails being sent by the Taliban. They said steps are being taken to thwart any untoward incident and block the supplies of arms and ammunition to the extremists.

“We are on their heels and are making all efforts to block arms and ammunition supplies to them from the channels developed by Taliban through Mohmand Agency, the adjoining areas of Malakand like Palai Sherkhani and Jabban Iroshah Road,” The News quoted a senior official, as saying. (ANI)

Jordan’s lover Alex Reid’s secret cocaine shame

London, August 30 (ANI): Jordan’s new lover Alex Reid has admitted that he snorted cocaine to relax after bouts.

The cage fighter, who was reportedly at the receiving end after a string of rows with the glamour girl over his part in violent hardcore porn film, alleged “every fighter needs to break the rules completely” and that sportsmen like him needed some “pharmaceuticals to get you high”.

The 34-year-old made the confession to the author of forthcoming ‘Warriors of the Cage’, published by Pennant Books, saying he used so much of the Class A drug that it took a toll on his health.

“I’ve done cocaine once too often, say like once every month or after a fight and that’s not good,” the News of the World quoted Reid as saying.

“It’s not good for a fighter because it’s taken vital years off my longevity in my health to come back,” he added.

The revelation may fuel the wrath of Peter Andre as he battles for custody of his children from Jordan, a.k.a Katie Price.

A source close to Andre said: “As far as Peter is concerned, Reid is not an ideal father figure and shouldn’t be responsible for another man’s children.

“Now that he’s admitted taking cocaine, it will send Peter through the roof knowing that this man is anywhere near his kids.” (ANI)

Tribals lament lack of adequate medical facilities in Orissa

Dasmantpur (Orissa), Aug 27(ANI): Tribals living in Orissa’s Dasmantpur village are deprived of basic amenities and health facilities leading to several health hazards.

Locals say that the Central Government had made development plans for education, health and communication, but they are yet to see development in this regard.

The plight of the residents of the village has become manifold with the onset of monsoon, as tribals are facing the wrath of epidemics like cholera and diarrhoea.

“We are not getting the facilities provided by the government, as they get diverted en route. People here consume mango kernel during rainy season, so chances of suffering from Cholera increases,” said Subas Patika, another local.

“They cannot reach the medical centres, as there is no proper road connectivity. The river en route also swells up during rainy season. Education facilities are also very poor here,” he added.asmantpur village was in news for the last few years for the number of deaths due to cholera and diarrhoea like epidemics after floods.

“We are facing water problems. There is a tube well, but worms fall from it, in the morning. So people don’t use it for drinking. Our village doesn’t even have proper road connectivity.

The Anganwadi (government sponsored centre to help poor) does provide us some medicines,” said Keshab Chandru, a local. (ANI)

Bruce Willis slammed over private airport plans in Idaho

London, July 13 (ANI): Bruce Willis has incurred the wrath of local critics over his plans to build his own airport near his ski lodge, the Soldier Mountain resort, in Idaho.

The ‘Die Hard’ star reportedly wants to have the private airport close to the small town of Hailey, where he moved almost 20 years ago.

But local residents have criticised the actor for eyeing entry into the aviation business, leaving managers to worry about Hailey’s own airport, Fried-man Memorial.oth airports want 8,000ft runways, long enough for big passenger jets, but they may be too close together, said an aviation expert.

“The authorities will have to rule which is the safest. Friedman has a solid record but it is boxed into canyons. Willis carries a big stick and offers fresh employment opportunities,” the Daily Express quoted the expert as having told Britain’s The Sunday Times. (ANI)

Jack Tweed films video with UK’s hottest new girlband Bubbel G

London, July 12 (ANI): Jack Tweed has got his first acting break. He has landed a role in a video shoot for new girl band Bubble G.

The 22-year-old, who lost his celebrity wife Jade Goody to cervical cancer in March this year, filmed for the debut single Got To Have A Gum of the girls, Coco, Bella, Bouji, Bliss and Elle.

“It was great to film with Jack and he could not have been nicer and more of a gentleman. He was quite shy initially but came out of his shell as the shoot went on and he built up his confidence,” the Daily Star quoted Elle as saying.

“We have seen him a couple of times since and he is becoming a good friend to all of us,” she added.

Fury over Romeo and Juliet sex shop opening next to Bard’s birthplace

London, May 30 (ANI): Shakespeare’s hometown Stratford-upon-Avon is witnessing serious response after a sex shop received a thumbs up to have its opening near the Bard’s birthplace.

The upcoming launch of Romeo and Juliet’s Adult Boutique, looking to sell saucy toys and porn DVDs just yards from where thousands flock every year to visit the playwright’s home, has incurred the wrath of community leaders.

Rev Martin Gorick, vicar of Holy Trinity Church where Shakespeare is buried, fears the raunchy shop would disgrace the poet’s home in Warwickshire.

“It depresses me – something so seedy will be in such a prominent position,” the Sun quoted him as saying.

“It’s a degradation of the environment. It’s a very prominent shop in a family area where schoolkids congregate,” he added.

Mayor Cllr Jenny Fradgley further said: “It’s not the image people want for Stratford.”

But owner Katie Gilbert, 33, believes products such as sweets shaped like Romeo and Juliet having sex would re impose Shakespeare’s treatment of passion in his plays.

She said: “We’ll have Shakespeare-style novelty gifts, as well as lingerie and things for stag and hen parties. Some people are too stuffy about the place.

“If you look at Shakespeare’s plays they were all about sex. I think he’d have approved.”

A spokeswoman for the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust added: “We don’t have a problem with it as such. Many retailers and restaurants use names associated with Shakespeare. It is no surprise this shop does the same.” (ANI)
