Capello vows to stay with England team until 2012

London, May 16 (ANI): Football coach Fabio Capello has committed his future to England team, whatever may be the result in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, as he is contracted to continue in his present job until 2012.

Capello contracted to stay as manager until the end of the 2012 European Championship, but an escape clause in his six million pounds-a-year contract allowed him a brief period to explore other offers in the aftermath of the World Cup, The Times reports.

The clause has been removed at Capello’s instigation in a deal brokered by Lord Triesman, chairman of the FA, and Sir David Richards.

“I’m happy here. I like this job I like this country. My future is tomorrow, and tomorrow is the World Cup,” said Capello.

The news is a welcome boost as the 30-man squad announced on Tuesday gather for a 10-day training camp in Austria.

The Italian said he has learnt a lot during his three years in England about the ways of the Premier League and the minds of his players.

“Now we arrive at the most important moment, but also this [preparation for the World Cup] is new for me,” Capello said.

“As a manager, you have to understand the pressure of the fans and the confidence the country have in this team. It’s a really rare sight,” The Times quoted him, as saying. (ANI)

Asia Cup win must for Pakistan to qualify for World Cup

Kuantan (Malaysia), May 12 (ANI): Pakistan must win the ongoing Asia Cup Hockey tournament in order to secure a birth in the World Cup to be held in New Delhi next year.

Pakistan coach Shahid Ali Khan said that as per the International Hockey Federation (FIH) decision, only the winners of the Asia Cup would qualify for the World Cup.

Khan downed the notion that Pakistan would qualify automatically for the mega event, even if it reaches the final of the Asia Cup with India.

“We must win Asia Cup here to qualify for the World Cup,” The News quoted Khan, as saying.

Khan said after defeating the defending champions India in the first game, Pakistan team is upbeat about its performance, and are confident of winning the tournament.

“We would be going all out to win here to make things easy for us. We need element of luck to win here. Its tough task, but boys are motivated after Indian win,” he added.

Being the host country, India has already qualified for the World Cup. (ANI)

Ajmal to undergo biomechanical test before Twenty20 World Cup

Dubai, May 8 (ANI): Controversial Pakistan off-spinner Saeed Ajmal would have to undergo a biomechanical test before he could roll over his arms in the forthcoming Twenty20 World Cup in England.

Ajmal would only be allowed to participate in the mega tournament if he clears the test.

“If the biomechanical report does not clear his bowling action then he will be replaced by one of the reserved players in the team for the Twenty20 World Cup,” The News quoted Pakistan coach Intikhab Alam, as saying.

Alam said Ajmal would be flying to England or Australia for the test to be conducted.

Ajmal was reported of a suspect action by the on-filed umpires Billy Bowden and Asad Rauf along with television umpire Zameer Haider after the second one-day international match against Australia in Dubai recently. (ANI)

Akhtar says Pak may win World Cup under Younis Khan

Islamabad, Mar.11 (ANI): Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar is doing everything to force his way back into the team, including showering praise on incumbent captain Younis Khan.

Commending the leadership qualities of Khan, Akhtar said that under his captaincy, Pakistan may win the 2011 World Cup. His positive approach would surely help the PCB form a competent squad before World Cup 2011. The News quoted Ahktar, as saying.

He expressed his lament at being dropped from the national squad.

“I utterly regret over being dropped from national squad in ODI matches against Bangladesh, but I would soon become part of team in series against Australia after demonstrating up to mark performance in domestic one-day tournament here,” Akhtar said.

Akhtar last played in the home one-day international series against Sri Lanka, but was dropped after the first two games following his dismal performance.(ANI)

Can Jinnah live without fear in today’s Pakistan?

Islamabad, Dec 21 (ANI): Mohammad Ali Jinnah, who envisioned a secular state of Pakistan and wanted people to be happy and prosperous, would not be able to live in the country today without feeling threatened and insecure.

There has been no dearth, for some time, of foreign experts and analysts who imply that Pakistan is becoming a failed state and being projected the most dangerous place in the world, The News reported.

Pakistan becoming a failed state and being ungovernable, who should we expect to pick up the pieces and set a direction for the country that is in consonance with the dictates of the modern world and, to invoke a cliche, the vision of Mohammad Ali Jinnah? The paper asked.

Pakistan of today is beset by grave challenges, the aftermath of the Mumbai carnage being only one dimension of what ruling ideas have wrought.

One of the major regrets is that the forces that should be on the side of democracy and enlightenment are not united and have not been mobilised into action.

This is one reason why people feel disenchanted with the leadership of Asif Ali Zardari and mourn his apparent loss of credibility and moral authority.

If Pakistan is beginning to present the look of a failed state and if it is ungovernable in the eyes of a politician of Nawaz Sharif’s importance – and that too in the aftermath of the Mumbai carnage that has planted frightening thoughts in the minds of most Pakistanis – what lies ahead?

Given the stance that has been adopted by both Pakistan and India with relation to the terrorist attack in Mumbai, the situation is likely to get worse, at least in the near future, The News said.

The conflict between the potentially militant Islamist forces and the democratic forces of enlightenment will decide the fate of this nation. This historic contest is surely becoming rather ferocious, mainly because of the complexity that has been injected by the global war against terrorism and the social and economic deprivations of the people of Pakistan. UN: Bumper cereal harvest in 2008, but world agriculture threatened

UN: Bumper cereal harvest in 2008, but world agriculture threatened Rome – The ongoing financial crisis could threaten many countries’ agricultural sectors, undoing this year’s record world cereal production, a UN agency reported Thursday.

World cereal production is expected to set a new record this year thanks to high prices and favourable weather conditions, which boosted planting, said the Rome-based Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in the latest issue of its “Food Outlook” report.

FAO’s forecast for world cereal production in 2008 now stands at 2.24 billion tons (including rice in milled terms), 5.3 per cent more than in 2007.

Among the major cereals, the most significant production expansion is forecast for wheat, up 11 per cent from last year-

Production of coarse grains is also forecast to surpass last year’s record by at least 3 per cent, while rice production is anticipated to exceed the “already excellent results” achieved in 2007 by more than 2 per cent, the FAO said.

However, this year’s record cereal harvest and the recent fall in food prices should not create a false sense of security, said Concepcion Calpe, one of the report’s main authors.

“For example, if the current price volatility and liquidity conditions prevail in 2008/09, plantings and output could be affected to such an extent that a new price surge might take place in 2009/10, unleashing even more severe food crises than those experienced recently,” Calpe said.

“The financial crisis of the last few months has amplified downward price movements, contributed to tighten credit markets, and introduced greater uncertainty about next year’s prospects, so that many producers are adopting very conservative planting decisions,” Calpe said.

The report stresses that most of the recovery in cereal production took place in developed countries, where farmers were in a better position to respond to high prices.

Developing countries, on the contrary, were largely limited in their capacity to respond to high prices, the FAO report said, noting that developing countries remain the most vulnerable to volatile markets.

The sharp 2007/2008 rise in food prices has increased the number of undernourished people in the world to an estimated 923 million.

Lower international commodity prices have not yet translated into lower domestic food prices in most low-income countries.

“There is a real risk that, as a consequence of the current world economic problems, people will have to reduce their food intake and the number of hungry could rise further,” Calpe said.

World agriculture is facing serious long-term challenges, including land and water constraints, low investments in rural infrastructure and agricultural research, expensive agricultural inputs relative to the initial price charged by farmers, and little adaptation to climate change.

FAO estimates that to feed a projected world population of more than nine billion people by 2050 (around six billion today), global food production must nearly double. (dpa)

Swiss Re reports surprise third-quarter loss of 260 million dollars

Zurich – Switzerland’s reinsurance giant Swiss Re reported a surprise third-quarter loss Tuesday, slipping 304 million Swiss francs (259 million dollars) into the red after registering a profit of 1.47 billion francs in the same quarter of 2007.

The company said in Zurich that it would now suspend a share buy- back programme.

The company’s net assets fell a further 6 per cent from the second quarter to 24.1 billion francs.

Claims worth 365 million dollars from hurricanes Ike and Gustav in the United States had a greater affect on the company’s result than expected. (dpa)

No guarantee from US to end air strikes in Pak

Islamabad, The US has reportedly not guaranteed an end to the ongoing drone strikes in Pakistan aimed at Taliban and Al Qaeda militants, even as the leadership in Islamabad apprised US Central Command chief General David Petraeus that it could no longer tell its people to support the US-led war on terror in the wake of frequent violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty through air strikes.

General David Petraeus, who is on an official visit to Pakistan, met a host of Pakistani leaders on Monday. It is his first visit after taking over his new assignment last week.

“Pakistani leaders told General Petraeus it is not possible to ask our people to support the war on terror when our sovereignty is violated every day,” the Daily Times quoted sources familiar with the interaction, as saying.

US Assistant Secretary of State Richard Boucher accompanied Petraeus.

According to an official statement, Zardari warned the US General that the missile strikes were ‘counterproductive’ and “difficult to explain by a democratically-elected government”. “It is creating a credibility gap,” he said.

“The president said that US leadership has affirmed respect for Pakistan’s territorial integrity,” the statement said.

Boucher and Petraeus also met Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani. Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Kayani and National Security Adviser Mehmood Ali and senior US and Pakistani officials were also present.

Petraeus separately met with Gen Kayani and Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Chairman General Tariq Majid, who told the US delegation that the two countries needed a “consensus strategy to deal with violent extremism” that “keeps in view the local perspective”. (ANI)

India, Iran ink bilateral agreements on extradition, legal matters

Tehran, India and Iran inked bilateral treaties on the extradition of criminals and mutual assistance on legal matters on Sunday.

External affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Iranian Minster of Justice Ghulam Hussein Elham signed the treaty during the concluding session of the 15th Indo-Iran Joint Commission that was held almost after three years of the last one held in New Delhi in
2005.

“We have signed an extradition treaty and mutual legal assistance treaty in criminal matters. We have also finalized an initial text of the bilateral investment programme and protection agreement which we hope to sign very shortly,” said Mukherjee during his second visit to Tehran this year.

Mukherjee termed these treaties as mechanisms, which would facilitate the expanding trade and economic cooperation between the two countries.

He also said the discussions have led to an in-principle agreement to reach an accord on preferential trade agreement.

Further, he observed that the Joint Commission would be key to consolidating bilateral economic and cultural ties and maintain the momentum for future development.

Both the countries also signed an agreement on bilateral investment promotion and protection to facilitate trade and economic cooperation.

Mukherjee and Iranian Minister of Finance Shamsoddin Hosseini signed the final memorandum of understanding of the 15th Joint Commission meeting.

Apart from these treaties India and Iran also signed the Memorandum of Associations on Agriculture, Sister Port relationship, and memorandum of understanding (MoU) between India”s Trade Promotion Organization and Iranian International Exhibition Company.

Earlier, on Saturday India and Iran agreed to institutionalize a trilateral ministerial mechanism with Pakistan to resolve the issues related to the Iran-Pakistan-India (IPI) gas pipeline project.

According to the 14th Joint Commission held between the then Iran foreign minister Kamal Kharrazi and his Indian counterpart Natwar Singh, India and Iran were to conduct joint meeting every year.

But India”s stand on Iran”s nuclear programme and vote against Iran at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) brought about a rough patch between the two countries.

However, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad ”s visit to India this year considerably improved relations between both the countries. (ANI)

OPEC crude price falls below 60 dollars despite output cut

OPEC crude price falls below 60 dollars despite output cutVienna- The price for crude oil produced by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) fell below 60 dollars Friday, despite the cartel’s decision to curb production.

Growing recession fears sent stock markets and oil prices downward, with one barrel (159 litres) of OPEC crude standing at 57.57 dollars Friday, 2.70 dollars lower than on the previous day, according to data provided by OPEC on Monday.

The 19-month low came on the same day that OPEC oil ministers decided at an emergency meeting in Vienna to cut their total output by 1.5 million barrels per day from November 1, in order to stop the oil price from falling.

The cartel is scheduled to meet next in Oran, Algeria on December 17. But OPEC President and Algerian Energy Minister Chakib Khelil said the group might meet again before that if needed.

OPEC calculates an average basket price based on 13 important brands produced by cartel members. (dpa)

Barricades removed around Suu Kyi’s residence in Yangon

Yangon – The military junta in Myanmar has removed barricades from the house of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi in the city of Yangon, witnesses reported Sunday.

The 63-year-old Nobel peace laureate has spent 13 of the past 19 years under house arrest.

Police started clearing the street outside the house for normal traffic between the hours of 6 am and 6 pm, the witnesses said.

There was no explanation for the move, and there was no indication of a rapprochement between the regime and the opposition.

In Mandalay, six opposition politicians were recently sentenced to between two and 13 years in prison for disturbance of the peace and incitement of the population, a group of Burmese exiles reported in Thailand on Saturday.

The six, who are members of Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy, were arrested one year ago after the junta savagely put down a revolt by Myanmar’s Buddhist monks.

Suu Kyi won elections in Myanmar in 1990, but the military regime did not recognize the outcome.

Her current period of house arrest began in 2003. She is rarely allowed to leave her residence, and then only with an escort to meet UN representatives or members of the regime.

She is not expected to be released from house arrest any time soon.

University Avenue Road, on which Suu Kyi’s family compound is located, was largely sealed off before Sunday’s move and was only open to residents.

The German embassy residence was recently relocated to the same road. (dpa)
