I did not prepare Italy fully, says Lippi

(Reuters) – Italy coach Marcello Lippi took full responsibility for their humiliating World Cup group stage exit on Thursday although the players also accepted their share of the blame for a dreadful campaign.

The holders lost 3-2 to World Cup debutants Slovakia, who qualified for the last 16 with Paraguay from what had looked an easy-looking Group F for Italy.

“I take all responsibility. I haven’t prepared this team well enough,” an ashen-faced Lippi told a news conference without even being prompted by a question.

“I didn’t think we could win the World Cup but I though we would do better.”

In a strikingly honest assessment of what went wrong, Lippi pummeled himself verbally for 15 minutes.

“I failed to train the team well enough, they weren’t ready for such an important match. For an hour and 15 minutes, for psychological reasons I think, nothing worked,” he said.

The 62-year-old, a national hero when he led the Azzurri to 2006 World Cup glory, had already announced he would step down again after the finals. He will be replaced by Cesare Prandelli.

Lippi first quit straight after their triumph in Germany but returned in 2008 after Italy’s disappointing European Championship campaign under Roberto Donadoni.

“I don’t regret coming back, I came back with great enthusiasm,” he added.

His stark words took some of the sting out of the Italian reporters who were waiting to savage a campaign that began with two 1-1 draws.

“I have no intention of getting straight back into coaching and training after this,” added Lippi. “I’ll take some months off and we will see.”

At previous tournaments, Italy have often blamed controversial refereeing decisions for causing their exit but this time they all collectively hung their heads in shame.

“When we won the World Cup we all got given national medals of honor. Now they’ll give us medals of shame, which is right,” midfielder Gennaro Gattuso told reporters having played his last game for the Azzurri before international retirement.

“Italian football must examine its conscience. Tonight we have reached rock bottom,” he added.

Midfielder Andrea Pirlo, who said he would not quit Italy but feared a cycle had ended, echoed Gattuso’s views.

“We have done something shameful,” he said. “We haven’t won a game. It’s everyone’s fault.”

‘Beasted’ Broad backs ‘fearless’ England for Ashes, World Cup glory

London, June 11(ANI): England fast bowler Stuart Broad has said that he spent his time out of the national team on working on his fitness, and announced that he is now prepared for the Ashes and the World Cup.

Broad, who was dropped for the two-Test series against Bangladesh, was named in the 13-man ODI squad to play England in a five-match series.

“I’ve spent the last few weeks at Loughborough getting a serious beasting in the gym — it’s been knackering, but I feel stronger and have put on about a kilogram of muscle. This isn’t a short-term thing, this is so I am still going strong by the end of the Ashes in January and through to the World Cup,” The Sun quoted Broad, as saying.

“By being dropped for that reason, I at least have the confidence that I”m in the long-term plans,” he added.

The 23-year-old said that he was unhappy with the selectors’ decision to drop him for the Bangladesh Test series.

“It was a hard phone call to take when the selectors told me. They gave their reasons and were adamant it wasn”t form. So if I”m taking wickets during an Ashes win in Australia and the World Cup, it will have been worth it,” Broad said.

He further insisted that the current England one-day side is different from the one that lost 6-1 to Australia last summer.

“These five games against Australia this summer are important — it”s crucial we continue the momentum we”ve built up in one-day cricket. Now we back ourselves and each other to play fearless cricket. We look a different team and that”s why we won the World Twenty20,” Broad said.

“We want to keep beating Australia. We have the Ashes and won that Twenty20 final — it”s hugely important we keep getting these little things over them,” he added. (ANI)

Beckham rallies England squad to win World Cup for Brit soldiers in Afghanistan

London, May 26(ANI): England footballer David Beckham has called on Fabio Capello’s men to secure World Cup glory in South Africa to honour the British soldiers serving in Afghanistan.

Beckham, who was recently in Afghanistan for a surprise visit to boost the morale of thousands of British troops serving in the country, delivered a dressing room speech to his England team-mates before Monday’s friendly 3-1 victory over Mexico.

England captain Rio Ferdinand said that Beckham told the squad to be inspired by the troops in Afghanistan.

“Becks came in the changing room and he was talking about his trip. He told us about the experience he had going over there and what is was really like. He said the lads do a great job for us,” The Mirror quoted Ferdinand, as saying.

“It is great that we are getting support from the boys in Afghanistan. With them being so far away they probably think we don”t really care about what is going on, but we do,” he added.

Earlier, Beckham, who is recovering from an Achilles-tendon injury, had spoken about his respect for the armed forces.

“I have nothing, but admiration for these young men and women and it makes me very proud to be British,” Beckham said.

Britain has around 10,000 troops in Afghanistan as part of an international force, largely fighting the Taliban. (ANI)

Messi under no pressure to to take Argentina to World Cup glory

London, May 19 (ANI): Ace striker Lionel Messi has said that he feels under no pressure to take Argentina to World Cup glory.

The Barcelona striker is tipped to be World Player of the Year and is Diego Maradona’s best hope of winning in South Africa.

“I don’t feel pressure playing in the Argentina shirt. In Spain, I’m also in a team that has to win everything,” The Mirror quoted him, as saying.

“The World Cup is a nice opportunity to show I can do the same things in the national team as for Barcelona,” Messi added. (ANI)

Black Cap batters have to throw caution to the winds: Styris.

St.Lucia (West Indies), May 10 (ANI): New Zealand all-rounder Scot Styris has said that the Black Caps will need to throw caution to the winds and “seize the game against England by the scruff of the neck” in order to attain Twenty20 World Cup glory.

“We seemed to play with a little bit of fear yesterday, and by that I mean, guys were a little scared of taking risks, of playing the big shots and I think you”ve got to in this version of the game, especially in big games,” The Sun quoted Styris, as saying.

“You”ve got to be prepared to get out and I felt like, as a group, we didn”t do that,” he added.

New Zealand will be grateful that England star batsman Kevin Pietersen won’t be around, as he has left for England to attend the birth of his first child.

Styris said Pietersen, who has scored of 6, 70 not out and 53 in the Caribbean tournament so far, had been one of the competition”s form players.

“He”s world class and without him we know that it makes our job easier, although we know that we still have to put the ball in the right areas,” Styris said. (ANI)

Capello can take England to World Cup glory without Rooney: Nistelrooy

London, Apr 28(ANI): Former Manchester United striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy reckons that England manager Fabio Capello can guide the Three Lions to World Cup glory despite Wayne Rooney’s absence.

“There is no one better in England than Wayne in his position. Wayne is a massive influence for England and can make the difference between the quarter-finals and scoring a goal and the semis,” The Sun quoted Nistelrooy, as saying.

“But if for one reason or another he can’t play, you know that Fabio Capello will find a way,” he added.

The 33-year-old, who had played under Capello at Real Madrid, believes Capello is one of the best managers in the world and he will prove his worth in England as well.

“I was so disappointed when he left. I told him that. I felt there was so much more in there for us if he had stayed. I really had that sensation and that”s what he has proven with England as well,” Nistelrooy said.

“I spoke to some of the English lads before he got to work and I told them, ‘He is going to turn it around, he is going to be unbelievable for England’. That’s what he does. He’s a successful manager and he achieves things,” he added. (ANI)

Torres denies putting country before club

London, Apr 20 (ANI): Ace striker Fernando Torres, who faces up to six weeks on the sidelines, is confident of spearheading Spain’s bid for success in South Africa. He has also ruled out reports about putting country before club.

Torres said he has not put World Cup glory with Spain before helping Liverpool end their miserable season on a high.

Torres again injured his knee, which first required surgery in January, in the opening skirmishes of the Europa League tie with Benfica at the start of the month.

And, he said the fact he played on until the closing stages scoring twice in the 4-1 win to set up Thursday’s semi-final showdown with his old club Atletico Madrid, proves his commitment to Liverpool, The Daily Express reports.

“It is not true I put country before club. We looked at all the options before coming to the last resort, which was surgery.

“The meniscus was damaged and the doctors decided we had to operate. The injury happened in the second minute of the game against Benfica at Anfield. I played 85 minutes injured,” said Torres.

“If I had been thinking only about the World Cup I would’ve asked to be taken off. I didn’t. I wanted to reach the Europa League final with my team. We have to be positive and think about the fact there’s still a World Cup to look forward to,” said Torres.

“This has been a hard year with injuries and it’s a pity not to have played more and scored more goals. Right now, the World Cup is the most important thing. You wait four years for it and, if things go well, I don’t expect to miss it,” he added. (ANI)

Capello’s Midas-touch will get us World Cup glory: Lampard

London, Sep 11 (ANI): England star Frank Lampard has revealed that coach Fabio Capello has instilled self-belief in his players, turning a bunch of players who failed miserably to qualify for Euro 2008 into a group of potential World Cup winners

Capello, who arrived in England with a reputation as a master tactician, is proving that he has a Midas touch as well after England won eight games out of eight to qualify for the World Cup in South Africa.

The England coach’s management style as well as his knowledge of the game has also left his players contented with the way things are going.

“History now says Fabio gets all the big decisions right. He’s had great success and it’s not by chance. He is a fantastic manager and his biggest Midas touch has been getting us working together as a team and as a unit. You can see the results of that pretty much in every game of the qualifying round,” The Sun quoted Lampard said.

Besides referring to team selection, Lampard also praised his coach’s tactics mid-game and his making of crucial changes at the right time. (ANI)

Becks sets sight on stint with Spurs for World Cup glory

London, Apr. 22 (ANI): Believe it or not Harry Redknapp, the White Hart Lane boss, is resurrecting David Beckham’s career from the dead.

That’s the word from inside the game, which suggests that Becks could join Tottenham ahead of next year’s World Cup finals.

Beckham needs to find a place to play serious football when the MLS season ends in October and his signing is part of a 40 million pound push by Spurs to realise their Champions League dream.

Redknapp is aware of the deal, and if there’s one boss in the Premier League who can get the best from Becks, it’s Harry.

He thrives on the challenge of taking senior players who may have taken a wrong turn and making them great again.

Witness Paolo Di Canio at West Ham, Sol Campbell at Portsmouth.

What Redknapp offers Becks is an environment where he can thrive and a stage on which Fabio Capello can’t ignore him.

Beckham and Spurs is the perfect marriage. The former England captain wanted to be Tottenham legend Glenn Hoddle when he was a kid.

As a man, the North London club offers him the right place at the right time to realise his dream of playing in a fourth World Cup finals.

And who better to play club football under? If Sir Bobby Robson is England’s greatest living manager, then Redknapp is the best still working. (ANI)

French football star Henry believes England can achieve World Cup glory

London, Mar.24 (ANI): French football star Thierry Henry believes that England can achieve World Cup glory if they believe in themselves.

The Barcelona star is of the view that Three Lions boss Fabio Capello has players who can set world football on fire, and to prove his point, reeled off the names of six England players who could find a place in any international football squad around the world.

Henry declared: “I’ve always said you guys have one of the best teams in the world.

“Just look at John Terry, Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand. They do it day-in, day-out in the league, in the Champions League, whenever they play. You have the players and you have a good team,” The Sun quoted him, as saying further.

“I could go through the whole squad and you have six or seven really top-class players,” he added. (ANI)
