Optimism grows in Argentina as World Cup nears

Thousands of Argentines cheered on the national team as it departed for South Africa on Friday on their quest to win the country’s third World Cup.

The send-off marked the latest sign of growing confidence in coach Diego Maradona, who has had a turbulent tenure since taking over the team more than 18 months ago.

Chanting fans crowded a highway leading to the Buenos Aires international airport as a bus carrying the team moved slowly towards their flight.

“We’re all with Diego,” said Martin Bertaina, a 39-year-old horse trainer who rode his horse 20 kilometers to see the team.

“Maybe a few months ago we weren’t, but Argentines are like that. One day we love you, the next we don’t. But Maradona is special.”

Argentina, World Cup champions in 1978 and 1986, are widely seen as one of the tournament’s most talented teams led by striker Lionel Messi, who was voted Europe’s player of the year.

Maradona, one of the game’s greatest players, had a wobbly start as coach. His side advanced to the World Cup finals after winning their last qualifying match, narrowly avoiding a playoff.

However, two wins in friendlies against Germany and Canada, and strong showings by many of the team’s top players with their club teams in Europe, have raised expectations for the team in South Africa.

“We possibly have some of the best players in the world,” said 68-year-old clothing store owner Carlos Paradela, who cheered the team while carrying his five-year-old grandson Joel on his shoulders. “Diego is going to lead us to the championship.”

Argentina have been drawn in Group B for the World Cup finals along with Nigeria, South Korea and Greece.

Pak suffer double blow as Gul, Arafat ruled out of Twenty20 World Cup

Lahore, Apr 19(ANI): Defending Twenty20 World Cup champions Pakistan have suffered a major blow, as fast bowler Umar Gul and all-rounder Yasir Arafat have been ruled out of the Twenty20 World Cup in the West Indies due to injuries.

Gul, Pakistan’s leading wicket-taker in the previous two editions of the Twenty20 World Cup, hurt his shoulder during a training camp at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore earlier this month, while Arafat is struggling with a calf injury.

Both players failed to clear their final fitness tests conducted at the Gaddafi Stadium here.

“In mutual agreement with captain and coach, we have decided that we will not take a chance with half-fit players,” The Daily Times quoted Mohsin Hasan Khan, Pakistan selector, as saying.

“We have recommended the names of fast bowlers Mohammad Sami and uncapped Mohammad Irfan as replacements for the injured players. We have picked Sami from the list of five reserves we had kept for the World Cup,” he added.

Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi admitted that the absence of Gul is a major blow, but stressed that the team will manage with the players they have.

“Umar is our best bowler, but we have to cope with it and now Sami has to replace him and perform,” he said. (ANI)

England to play Australian Barbarians

The touring England rugby squad will play two mid-week matches against an Australian Barbarians side boasting established internationals and emerging Test contenders during their visit in June.

Adding to a schedule headlined by their Cook Cup showdowns with the Wallabies on June 12 in Perth and June 19 in Sydney, England will also play the Australian Barbarians on the Tuesday before each Test as part of the Bundaberg Rum Rugby Series.

The Australian Barbarians will take on the 2003 Rugby World Cup champions and 2007 runners-up at ME Bank Stadium in Perth, home of the Western Force, on June 8.

The match will be the first the Australian Barbarians have played against a visiting international side since downing Scotland 39-34 at Penrith in 1998.

The second game against England will be staged at Central Coast Stadium in Gosford on 15 June.

Wallabies coach Robbie Deans welcomed the addition of the two Australian Barbarians fixtures to the England tour schedule.

“These games provide massive benefit for both the Qantas Wallabies program and Australian Rugby as a whole,” Deans said.

“The mid-week matches we played on our spring tour last year were a great example of the benefits the additional international exposure provides.

“Quade Cooper played his way into our side for the Test against England the following weekend when we played Gloucester.

“Kurtley Beale also excelled that night, and wound up playing his first Test later in the trip.

“Luke Morahan then made his debut for the Wallabies at Cardiff, and has subsequently kicked on this year with the Queensland Reds.”

The two matches in Perth will be the first England has played in the city since starting its triumphant 2003 Rugby World Cup campaign.

The tour will also mark the return of Jonny Wilkinson to Australia, pending selection, for the first time since his memorable role in the securing of the William Webb Ellis Cup.

The England squad, after four matches in Australia, will conclude its southern hemisphere tour with a game against the New Zealand Maori in Napier on June 23.

Indian cricket team leaves for South Africa

Mumbai, Sept 18 (ANI): The Indian cricket team left for South Africa from here on Friday to participate in the Champions Trophy.

South Africa has been a happing hunting ground for India who was runners-up in the one-day World Cup in 2003 and Twenty20 World Cup champions four years later.

India has received a boost before their Champions Trophy campaign when in-form opener Gautam Gambhir was passed fit to return after injury.

The left-hander has recovered from a groin strain and will travel with the team to South Africa, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said in a statement on Thursday.

India, already without the explosive Virender Sehwag, were sweating on Gambhir’s fitness after the Delhi batsman missed this month’s tri-series in Sri Lanka.

India won the Colombo tournament, also involving New Zealand and the hosts, and went into the prestigious eight-team event as one of the favourites after not having lost a one-day series in the past year.

India has been grouped with defending and world champions Australia, Twenty20 champions Pakistan and former champions West Indies in the preliminary phase.

A young Indian batting unit struggled against short-pitched bowling in this year’s Twenty20 World Cup in England.

Ishant Sharma will spearhead the five-man pace attack in the absence of experienced left-arm pacer Zaheer Khan, who has been ruled out until the end of the year after undergoing surgery on an injured shoulder. (ANI)

Sports shrink’s “hypnotism” behind Pak’s World Twenty20 win: Malik

Lahore, June 26 (ANI): Former Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik has attributed the team’s World Twenty20 win to the special sessions conducted by a sports psychologist ahead of their visit to England.

Praising captain Younis Khan for his skills, Malik said the sessions that the team had with the psychologist, greatly helped the players to overcome their negative frame of mind and focus on the target only.

“I think those sessions helped as the doctor used the power of hypnotism to drill it into our minds that we were going to England to become the Twenty20 World Cup champions. It helped us a lot to play to our true potential,” The Daily Times quoted Malik, as saying.

Malik still regretted losing to India in the inaugural ICC Twenty20 Championship in South Africa in 2007, and said he was bitterly disappointed after the loss, specially because he was the captain of the team then.

He described the victory against South Africa in the semi-final of the Championship as the most important win, as it proved that Pakistan could beat any team in the world on its day.

“I think our victory over South Africa in the semi-final showed that we could beat anyone on our day. We had the momentum with us and with Shahid Afridi finding his batting form, it was almost like we were destined to win,” said Malik. (ANI)

Roo warns rivals that there’s ‘more to come from me’!

London, Apr.22 (ANI): Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has warned key soccer rivals Chelsea and other teams that they can expect him to play football at his best when he confronts them on the field.

Despite heavy pressure from their rivals, Rooney claims he is feeling as good as ever.

“I just have to keep playing as well as I can. That is what I must try and do.If I can help Manchester United or England win trophies it would be great for me,” he added.
