Afridi says aggression, ending ‘mental hang up’ critical for Pak success against Oz

Karachi, May 20 (ANI): Flamboyant Pakistan T20 skipper Shahid Afridi believes that his team suffers from a ‘mental hang up’ when it comes to competing with the World Champions Australia, and he wants to help players break that ‘jinx’ concerning the Kangaroos.

In the recent years, Pakistan have had a nightmarish record against Australia, with the latest being the January-February tour where Pakistan failed to register even a single win against the hosts.

It came close to defeating Australia in the semifinal of the just concluded ICC T20 World Championship in the West Indies, but faltered at the last moment.

Afridi said the loss almost shattered his heart, but he pointed towards the positive aspect of the loss that at least Pakistan played some tough and competitive cricket.

“I would have been left completely shattered but what gave me hope was the fact that we played aggressive cricket and a victory against Australia was within our reach,” The News quoted Afridi, as saying.

“It would have been great had we go on to win that match but once again the Australians proved that they are still the best in the world,” he added.

The hard hitting all-rounder pointed out that defeating Australia has never been easy, but the teams competing against the world champions would have to match the aggression of the Kangaroos to stand any chance.

“I must make it clear that beating Australia will never be easy. But I’m also confident that we can do it. What we need is to overcome our mental hang up and just play brave cricket. The thing is that the Aussies are mentally very tough and the only way to beat them is by going out there and giving it our best shot. You have to be really aggressive against that team because there is no other way to tackle them,” Afridi said.

Afridi said he is eagerly waiting for the two T20 encounters against Australia during the upcoming series in England, as the best chance of ending the team’s poor run against Australia is to defeat them in the game in which they are considered to be the best.

“It would take a gigantic effort to beat Australia in the Test series but Twenty20 cricket is a different story. We have a very good team for the shortest format and can beat any opposition on our day,” he said. (ANI)

Seven top players excluded from Pak hockey squad for Azlan Shah Cup

Karachi, Apr.29 (ANI): The experienced trio of Sohail Abbas, Rehan Butt and Shakeel Abbasi have been axed from the Pakistan hockey squad after they failed to impress the selectors during the trials held here at the Hockey Club of Pakistan Stadium.

Announcing an 18-member squad for the upcoming Sultan Azlan Shah Hockey tournament in Ipoh, Malaysia, chief selector Hanif Khan said the three players have actually been ‘rested’.

Pakistan would be going to Malaysia without seven of its top players as skipper Zeeshan Ashraf, Akhtar Ali and Mohammad Waseem have already opted out of the May 6-16 tournament. Goalkeeper Salman Akbar did not attend the trials.

“We have rested senior players Sohail, Rehan and Shakeel as they looked mentally stressed in the trials, so we have selected new players in a hope that it starts a new beginning for Pakistan hockey,” Khan said.

30-year old full-back Mohammad Imran has been handed over the captaincy for the tournament, which would feature world champions Australia, South Korea, hosts Malaysia, India, China and Egypt.

Khan also expressed the hope that the newly capped players would salvage the country’s pride after the catastrophic show at last month’s World Cup in New Delhi, where Pakistan finished on a humiliating 12th spot.

“We have the Commonwealth Games in India and then the Asian Games later in the year, so we hope that this new team settles soon. Don’t expect medals from this team soon but, once they settle, they will win laurels,” The Daily Times quote Khan, as saying.

Pakistan contingent:

Mohammad Imran (captain), Imran Shah, Imran Butt, Aamir Shahzad, Kashif Ali, Mohammad Irfan, Fareed Ahmed, Mohammad Rashid, Zeeshan Ali, Mohammad Tauseeq, Waqas Sharif, Shafqat Rasool, Abdul Haseem Khan, Mohammad Zubair, Mohammad Rizwan, Andul Qayyum, Kashif Ali, Umar Bhutta. (ANI)

Indian cricket team leaves for South Africa

Mumbai, Sept 18 (ANI): The Indian cricket team left for South Africa from here on Friday to participate in the Champions Trophy.

South Africa has been a happing hunting ground for India who was runners-up in the one-day World Cup in 2003 and Twenty20 World Cup champions four years later.

India has received a boost before their Champions Trophy campaign when in-form opener Gautam Gambhir was passed fit to return after injury.

The left-hander has recovered from a groin strain and will travel with the team to South Africa, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said in a statement on Thursday.

India, already without the explosive Virender Sehwag, were sweating on Gambhir’s fitness after the Delhi batsman missed this month’s tri-series in Sri Lanka.

India won the Colombo tournament, also involving New Zealand and the hosts, and went into the prestigious eight-team event as one of the favourites after not having lost a one-day series in the past year.

India has been grouped with defending and world champions Australia, Twenty20 champions Pakistan and former champions West Indies in the preliminary phase.

A young Indian batting unit struggled against short-pitched bowling in this year’s Twenty20 World Cup in England.

Ishant Sharma will spearhead the five-man pace attack in the absence of experienced left-arm pacer Zaheer Khan, who has been ruled out until the end of the year after undergoing surgery on an injured shoulder. (ANI)

Akhtar keen to make a comeback to Pak team for Oz series

Lahore, Mar 29 (ANI): Controversial pacer Shoaib Akhtar is keen to make a comeback to the Pakistan team, which is gearing up to take on world champions Australia in One-day series going to be held in the UAE next month.

Akhtar feels the Australians could be beaten this time considering their shambolic performances against India and South Africa in recent series.

“I am working hard and training hard because we have some top series coming up in the next few months and I want to be part of the team. My knee is holding up well and it is a matter of getting into my bowling rhythm,” The Nation quoted him, as saying.

Akhtar has played a handful of Tests and One-Day Internationals since February 2006 because of disciplinary and fitness issues.

Akhtar seems to have impressed national selector with his fitness and form during a match of the national One-day championship in Rawalpindi.

Reports said that Pakistan captain Younis Khan want Akhtar and senior batsman Mohammad Yousuf, who is contracted with the Indian Cricket League, to be included in the team for the matches against Australia.

“Younis feels that with Pakistan due to play Australia and then the Twenty20 World Cup it would be good if both senior players were in the squad,” one report said.

In 2007, Akhtar was banned for 13-matches by the cricket board for getting into a fight with team-mate (ANI)

Shoaib backs Pak to beat Australia in the absence of greats

Karachi, Mar.26 (ANI): Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar believes that the Australian team does not pose as great a threat now as it did three to four years ago.

Akhtar said it was much easier to beat the Aussies now, as they did not have many star players in the squad.

He said that if the Pakistani players put up a good show in the forthcoming one day series in UAE, they can beat the world champions.

“Australia is now much easier to beat than before and if we play our best we can beat them in the series,” The News quoted Akhtar, as saying.

He said that the Kangaroos are not the same side it was earlier, with the likes of Glenn McGrath, Shane Warne, Adam Gilchrist, and Matthew Hayden retiring from the game.

“Australia now doesn’t have as many quality players as in the past. They were beaten by South Africa in the one-day series in Australia and judging by their strength in one-dayers I think we can beat them,” Akhtar added.

While Akhtar may think that the Aussies lack class, the new breed of players have proved that the team is not low on talent.

With Phil Hughes performing brilliantly at the top of the order, and Marcus North and Ben Hilfenhaus proving their worth with the ball, Australia still remains a formidable squad particularly when bowlers like Michael Johson are in the team, who can blast bowlers away with his bat too.

Akhtar expressed hope that he would be selected for the series against Australia, and said he has fully recovered from his injury.

“I have been working very hard and gearing up to play against Australia. I will play more domestic matches so that I can prove my fitness to the selectors and the rest is with them,” he said. ANI)

India beat Australia by 16 runs in ICC Women’s World Cup

Sydney, Mar 14 (ANI): India on Saturday started its super six campaign in style and thrashed world champions Australia by 16 runs at the ICC Women’s World Cup cricket tournament here.

Australian skipper Karen Rolton won the toss and elected to field first.

Her decision seemed wrong when Indian openers Anagha Despandhe (45) and Anjum Chopra (76) scored 69 runs for the first wicket.

The Indian team accumulated 73 runs in the last seven overs and reached a total of 234 for the loss of five wickets in 50 overs.

Chasing a target of 235, Australian team could manage to score only 219 for the loss of seven wickets.

This was Australia’s second defeat in the tournament.

For India, Reena Malhotra and Sultana scalped two wickets each. (ANI)
