Railways ad places Delhi in Pakistan

Kolkata, Mar 20 (ANI):In yet another blunder by government departments, an advertisement issued by the Indian Railways has placed New Delhi in Pakistan and Kolkata in the Bay of Bengal.

The Easter Railway issued the advertisement to newspapers during a flag off ceremony of the “Maharaja”s Express.”

Union Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee was to flag off the Maharaja’a Express trail at Kolkata Station on Saturday.

A box inside the advertisement panel showed the train route from Kolkata to New Delhi via Gaya, Varanasi, Bandhabgarh, Khajuraho, Gwalior and Agra.

As the faded background of the outline of a small map of India showed Kolkata in the Bay of Bengal and Delhi in Pakistan.

Eastern Railway Chief Public Relations Officer Samir Goswami accepted the mistake and apologised for the same.

He also informed that the Easter Railways has suspended the advertising agency.

Meanwhile, the advertising agency claimed that the route alignment had been given for the benefit of passengers.

“The map and the alignment are an artist”s impression and not to scale. It is never our intention to create a controversy,” the advertising agency said.

In January, the Union Women and Child Welfare Ministry had issued an advertisement containing former Pakistan air force chief’s photograph. (ANI)

Girl in coma: Delhi Government, Centre to take action against teacher, school

New Delhi, Apr.17 (ANI): The Delhi Government and the Centre have promised strict action against those involved in an incident that led to a eleven-year-old girl battling for her life while in coma.

The girl was brutally punished by her teacher on Thursday. Union Minister for Women and Child Welfare Renuka Chowdhury has promised justice will be done.

An inquiry has been ordered by the Municipal Council of Delhi (MCD) into how Shannoo Khan, a student of Class 2 at ND Primary School in Narela, North Delhi, fell into coma.

An inquiry has been ordered and the principal and teacher placed under suspension.

The incident allegedly occurred when Shannoo failed to recite the English alphabet in class. Angered by this, the teacher allegedly hit Shannoo’s head against the table and made her stand in the sun for over two hours. Unable to stand the heat, Shannoo fainted and was found unconscious by her younger sister, who studies in the same school.

The girl then informed their mother, Rihanna, who rushed Shannoo to Maharshi Valmiki Hospital. Shannoo’s father, Ayub Khan, who works as a waiter in a catering company, was away in Haryana for work.

“Doctors at Maharshi Valmiki hospital told me that Shannoo’s condition was critical and she might not survive,” said Khan.

The 11-year-old has been shifted to the pediatric ICU of Lok Nayak Hospital on Thursday afternoon. “

She was brought to our hospital in a critical condition. We have examined the child and her blood pressure is very low due to which she remains in a state of shock. Her pulse is very weak too. She is on a ventilator and we can comment on her condition only tomorrow,” said Dr A P Dubey, head of the department, pediatrics, Lok Nayak Hospital.

“The child was admitted in with severe seizure and her condition further deteriorated before she slipped into a coma. She was shifted to LNJP in critical condition,” said Dr KK Deuri, medical superintendent of Maharshi Valmiki hospital. MCD officials, however, denied that the girl was punished and said she suffered from frequent seizures.

Chairman of the MCD Education Committee Prithiviraj Sahni said, “The girl has been detained for shortage of attendance. She has been irregular with her classes because of fits. On Wednesday too, she had fits, following which her parents were informed.”

Municipal commissioner K S Mehra has asked the director of primary education to conduct an inquiry and submit a report in three days. MCD has already suspended the principal of the school (identified only as Dhanpati) for dereliction of duty and the teacher (identified only as Manju) for alleged corporal punishment.

Police said they had confirmed that the child was punished at school. Atul Katiyar, DCP, (outer), said: “We have confirmed from various sources that the child did face corporal punishment and investigations are on. We will file an FIR only after we receive the medical reports.” (ANI)

Giant-killer of 2004 is confident in 2009

: His favourite sports are wrestling and kabaddi, which is why he may have learnt to floor his opponents with surprise even in politics. Meet
69-year-old sitting Congress MP Eknath Gaikwad, who surprised everyone in the 2004 Lok Sabha polls by defeating Shiv Sena veteran and former LS speaker Manohar Joshi.

“I do not see a tough fight in my constituency this time as Joshi has decided not to contest and I am confident of defeating Suresh Gambhir of the Sena,” says a confident Gaikwad who has also been a three-time MLA and served as minister of state for portfolios like housing, labour, social welfare, women and child welfare, public health and medical education.

“I have done a lot of work in my constituency and this will help me retain the seat,” he says, pointing to the Dharavi redevelopment scheme, which has been one of his key projects. “I am changing the face of Dharavi and creating an entire township with good stormwater drains, sewerage, roads, gardens, schools and hospitals. In fact, when I campaign in Trombay and Deonar, I am asked by slumdwellers there to implement the Dharavi model in their areas,” he claims.

Gaikwad, who loves watching Marathi theatre, is busy meeting voters these days. “My office is open from 7 am and I look into every problem till late in the night,” says Gaikwad, who has earned the reputation of being a grassroots worker.

He is proud to be the only Marathi candidate of the Congress party in Mumbai. “Being a Dalit, I will get votes from the community en masse. And it will not be the Sena or MNS, but myself who will eat into the Marathi vote,” he says.

Gaikwad has a long list of plans for the newly carved out Mumbai South-Central constituency. “I am initiating the process of renovating stations on the Harbour Line and even making the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus hi-tech and world class. I will introduce 12-coach suburban trains on the Harbour Line and work for a super-speciality hospital,” he says.

Gaikwad adds that he is satisfied with the steps taken by the Congress-led governments in Delhi and Mumbai to ensure security in Mumbai post 26/11.

Madge’s ‘fling with Jesus Luz, hookup with A-Rod may doom her adoption plans’

New York, Mar 24 (ANI): Queen of pop Madonna’s plans of adopting another child from Africa may have been foiled by her having a fling with 22-year-old Brazilian model Jesus Luz and by her hook-up with baseball star Alex Rodriguez.

Madge, 50, who wants to adopt 3-year-old Mercy James, has come under the scrutiny of Malawi’s adoption officials, and they have very strict rules when it comes to adopting.

“Our official policy is that we do not encourage our children to be sent into broken homes,” the New York Daily News quoted a senior official from Malawi’s Ministry of Women and Child Welfare Development, as saying.

“[Madonna's] relationships may negatively affect the adoption of Mercy.

“The news she is linked to another woman’s husband and a young man less than half her age makes us question her morals,” the official said.

When Madge was seen flaunting her relationship with Luz in a recent racy W Magazine spread it did not sit well with the officials, and Simon Chisale, Malawi’s child welfare chief, said morality plays a big part in the adoption process.

“We do not only look at the material issues, but also the moral standing of prospective adoptive parents, because we do not want our children’s morals to be corrupted,” Chisale said.

“We do not apply the law retroactively,” he added. (ANI)

Congress demands removal of Gujarat minister

New Delhi, Mar. 16 (ANI): A group of Congress MLAs from Gujarat met with President Pratibha Patil in New Delhi on Monday to demand immediate removal of Gujarat cabinet Minister for Higher Education Maya Kodnani.

Kodnani, who is the Women and Child Welfare Minister in the Narendra Modi’s Government, is accused for having led a mob in the post-Godhra riots in 2002.

The delegation sought President’s intervention in case the State government does not take any appropriate action against Kodnani.

“We have requested the President that if the Gujarat Government doesn’t take any action then according to the Constitution, the President must force the Gujarat Government to take right action and remove her (Kodnani) from the minister’s chair,” Congress Chief, Gujarat, Siddharth Patel told reporters after meeting the President.

The MLA’s further alleged that despite the Special Investigation Team (SIT) having declared Kodnani as an offender in an affidavit submitted to the Gujarat High Court, Modi Government has not removed her from the Cabinet.

Kodnani obtained an anticipatory bail from a lower court, which has now been challenged in the Gujarat High Court by the Special Investigation Team. (ANI)
