England must start winning again, says Prior

London, Sep.14 (ANI): Wicketkeeper Matt Prior believes England can start winning again after suffering a four-nil series loss to Australia.

After Saturday’s seven-wicket drubbing against Australia at Lord’s, England are sliding towards a humiliating 7-0 whitewash.

The Aussies will take on the Poms in the fifth match at Trent Bridge tomorrow.

“There’s no getting away from it – we’ve been very disappointing and the batters have to hold our hands up. It’s not through lack of effort, I just think one-day cricket is about getting on a roll,” The Sun quoted Prior, as saying.

“If you don’t, you can put a lot of pressure on yourself immediately. We have a lot of talent in the dressing room. I genuinely believe that, if we stick with these guys and build a team, it will come good. Right now, it should potentially be 2-2. We should have won the first two games but weren’t ruthless enough,” he added.

Skipper Strauss insists everyone must remain positive.

He said: “The cancer, the thing that you really want to avoid, is becoming more and more negative because that won’t get you anywhere. A few guys are low on confidence and one-day cricket is not a game in which you can scratch around for long. You have to play in a positive fashion.” (ANI)

Lord’s cricket museum to house Afridi’s ‘World Cup winning’ shirt

London, July 28 (ANI): Flamboyant Pakistan cricketer Shahid Afridi’s match winning knock in the final of the ICC World Twenty20 Championship in Lord’s last month has earned him a reward that he would cherish for the rest of his life.

The Lord’s cricket museum has decided to preserve the shirt worn by him in the T20 final against Sri Lanka, The News reports.

Afridi scored 54 of just 40 balls and then took 1for 20 to help his side register a historic win in the final by six wickets.

He is the first Pakistani cricketer to receive such an honour.

The museum has some of the rarest articles used by some famous cricketers of the world. A sparrow which was killed by a stroke of the bat from Jahangir Khan, father of former Pakistan captain Majid Khan, has also been preserved in the museum.

The Lord’s cricket museum, commonly known as MCC Museum, is the world’s oldest sporting museum. While it contains a wide range of exhibits, it is best-known for being the home of The Ashes. (ANI)

Benitez refuses to congratulate Ferguson on winning Premier League

London, May 18 (ANI): Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez refused to congratulate Manchester United coach Sir Alex Ferguson on winning the English Premier League.

The angry Liverpool boss could not even bear to mention Ferguson’s name when quizzed about Manchester United’s achievement in drawing level with the Reds on 18 titles.

Benitez, whose side relegated West Brom on Sunday by beating the Baggies 2-0, said: “I’ll say well done to Manchester United, but not to anybody else! “I try to be polite and respectful to my fellow managers at all times throughout the season. But in this case, I saw some things and I heard some things that I did not like.”

“So I’ll repeat, to make it clear, that I’m prepared to congratulate Manchester United as a good club and a big club. But that’s all, nothing else,” The Sun quoted him, as saying.

The Spaniard has spent much of the season ranting at his Old Trafford rival.

“They also have a very big squad and won a lot of games one-nothing. Next season, it could be different. For them, spending 20million pound or even 30 million pound on players to come off the bench and influence matches, it is easier than for the rest of us.

“But we are working hard to catch up with them and hopefully to overhaul them. That is our aim,” Benitez added. (ANI)

Fergie to follow 1999 treble-winning blueprint

And he plans to continue to rotate his players, as they look to add the title and Champions League to the Carling Cup and Club World Cup.

“This is the time I love best. Non-stop football, every match of immense significance. I will be deploying the full range of our resources as I seek to give the players the energy you need at this level. It’s what I did when we won the Treble, resting players and bringing others in as I tried to pick teams fizzing for the fray,” The Sun quoted Fergie, as saying.

“I will juggle the squad in the hope we can progress in both the Premier League and the Champions League,” he added. (ANI)

Murray claims that he has rediscovered his winning habit

London, Apr.2 (ANI): British tennis star Andy Murray insists that he has rediscovered the habit of winning as he prepares for a Masters quarterfinal in Miami today.
The British No 1 will take on Fernando Verdasco – who beat him in the fourth round of the Australian Open in January – at the Sony Ericsson Open.
“I’ve now been finding ways to win when I’ve not been playing my best. I guess that’s all you can do. At the end of last year my consistency was great and I’ve started this year really great. I need to make sure I keep it going,” The Sun quoted Murray, as saying.urray is hoping to capture the world number one spot with his recent stupendous form.

Murray has been performing well on grass court as well as on synthetic courts’ as he powered his way through to the final of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells last weekend, but was outclassed by the world number one Rafal Nadal.

“Looking at the matches I’ve won and the win-loss record since Wimbledon,I think if I’d played like that the whole year, then I would be close to finishing No 1,” The Sun quoted Murray, as saying.

Murray currently ranks number four in world, and is pushing hard to dethrone Serbian ovak Djokovic from the third spot.

Murray, 21, however, knows that challenging Nadal’s kingship on the clay court would be something near to impossible, and getting past Roger Federer’s class on the grass court would require tremendous effort.

“If I can improve in the clay-court season then I can definitely move up,” he said. (ANI)
