Beceem & M-Skylink Launch “Retail-Ready” 4G-WiMAX Platform

Retail-Ready Platform Promotes Quick and Wide Adoption of 4G-WiMAX USB Modems
Across Different 2GHz WiMAX Networks
TAIPEI, Taiwan–(Business Wire)–
M-Skylink, a leading provider of Wireless Connection Manager solutions, and
Beceem, a leading provider of 4G chips, today announced the launch of a
“retail-ready” USB reference design platform that can be used for fast
development of 4G-WiMAX USB modems that are targeting the retail or wholesale
market. The “retail-ready” platform provides a complete turnkey reference design
solution comprised of Beceem`s BCSM350 4G-WiMAX chip and a complete Connection
Manager, Device Authentication and Management Software package from M-Skylink.

One of the compelling advantages of the “retail-ready” platform is that the
resulting devices are ensured to support the WiMAX Forum profile 1.0
specifications, and the Connection Manager is based on “Common API”
specifications to ensure an open development and interoperability environment.
M-Skylink`s wireless connection manager has been deployed in numerous networks,
and having it pre-integrated with Beceem`s IOT and field-proven 4G-WiMAX chip
will further accelerate the device development timelines while simultaneously
reducing the risk and cost of bringing new devices to market. The “retail-ready”
platform is also expected to comply with the WiMAX Forum retail profile.

“The first wave of 4G-WiMAX devices was purchased by service providers who sold
them to their subscribers, but the open channel devices enabled by the Beceem
and M-Skylink`s `retail-ready` platform should drive further expansion of the
4G-WiMAX device ecosystem by providing an easy-to-productize platform that
allows device innovation at low cost,” said Lars Johnsson, vice president of
marketing and business development for Beceem Communications.

“Service providers are looking for ways to bring more innovative devices into
their networks more quickly, and our Connection Manager integrated with Beceem`s
4G-WiMAX solution enables them go-to-market in the shortest possible time,” said
Alex Dee, vice president for M-Skylink. “Our Connection Manager is highly
customizable and can be integrated into any operating system, further broadening
the appeal of the `retail-ready` platform business model.”

Four killed in fire at Delhi slum

New Delhi, Mar 8 (ANI): A fire in slum settlement of north Delhi’s Sadar Bazaar killed at least four people and gutted 350 dwellings on Monday morning.

Fire officials informed that six people were also injuries in the blaze that enveloped the slum in Sadar Bazar.

“We got a call of a fire in Sadar Bazaar’s Qutub Chowk area at 3.05 a.m. The area is congested. Nearly 350 slums were gutted,” the fire department official said.

“It took us nearly two hours to douse the flames. We recovered four charred bodies from the remains. We haven’t been able to identify them yet,” he said.

The cause off fire has not been determined yet.

“We don’t know exactly what caused the fire yet. But in such cases, it could be a gas leak or flamed cigarette butt that started the fire.

“Since it is a congested slum area near a wholesale market, there was also a lot of inflammable material stocked in the open due to which the fire spread,” the official added.

The fire was contained by 5:30 a.m. after 23 fire engines were rushed to the spot. (ANI)

EU supported urban agricultural market popular in Kerala

Maradu (Kerala), Sept 18 (ANI): Agricultural Urban Wholesale Market at Maradu in Kerala has become popular among residents and farmers alike.

Fresh and cheap agricultural products are available here and the farmers have the storing, testing and other facilities.

The market is run by the Kerala Government and is financially aided by the European Union (EU). Fresh fruits, vegetables, spice and other agriculture produces are sold in the market.

The place is attracting hordes of customers, as the prices of products are cheaper compared to other shops.

“Most of the products sold in this market are fresh and of a good quality. Earlier, I used to go to main market. But this place is cheap, easy and products come directly from the farms as compared to other shops,” said Sebastian, a customer.

The setting up of warehousing, packaging and marine testing units for frozen or dried fish, vegetables and fruits at the Urban Market are some of the facilities available to farmers.

Prices are low since the farmers directly supply their produce in this market and own shops.

“Compared to other markets here, the prices are low as we have no labour cost involved During festival and other occasions, sellers used to charge high but here prices always remain low because we ourselves produce and later sell and for customers,” said Saji Kumar, a farmer and a shop owner.

Recently, various programmes and exhibitions have been introduced with the help of the State Government and horticulture mission to make the market more farmer-friendly.

The market was set up to improve the marketing infrastructure and enabling farmers to get a better price for their produce.

The market is developed at an area of 46 acres that can handle more than 2,500 tons of produce.

Facilities such as internet access enable the farmers keep track of the daily prices, Agmark certification for the produce is also available at the Agmark Testing Laboratory functioning at the market. By Juhan Samuel (ANI)

Further unrest in west China’s Urumqi region following syringe attacks

Urumqi (China), Sep 3(ANI): Following a spate of ethnically motivated syringe attacks in China’s Xinjiang province, renewed mass demonstrations and violence was reported in the region on Thursday.

Thousands of people gathered at the residential quarter of Xiaoximen, at Renmin Cinema and Beiyuanchun farmers’ produce wholesale market and demanded security assurance from authorities, Xinhua reports.

Local Police had detained 15 people and arrested four in connection with the attacks, but it did not say what ethnic group they belonged to.

In recent weeks, ethnic-fueled violence has plagued the city, following the riots that occurred between Uyghurs, who are predominantly Muslim, and ethnic Han Chinese, the majority group in China.

Unconfirmed reports of deaths in those riots range from 200 to many more. (ANI)

Chemical shop burnt in Madhya Pradesh

Indore, Apr 9 (ANI): A massive fire gutted down goods worth millions of rupees in Indore chemical shop on Thursday.

The fire broke out early in the morning at Siyaganj Market, a wholesale market for grains, oil and dry fruits.

Eyewitnesses say that the fire, which started from a garbage bin kept outside the chemical shop, soon started spreading to the neighbouring shops and the residential area, which is close to the market.

“The fire started in a garbage bin and due to this fire we had to vacate the residential area. Many shops were gutted and the loss has gone into millions of rupees,” said Sunil, a resident.

Officers said that around 20-25 water tankers were used to control the fire.

“Around 20-25 tankers have been used and still more water is required but fire is under control,” said S.P. Shukla, Assistant Sub Inspector, Fire brigade, Indore.

The local government has ordered an investigation into the incident. (ANI)

At the headquarters of rage, an island of calm

THERE WAS one island of peace in Kandhamal last August, as Hindu activists looted homes, burnt churches and chased Dalits-turned-Catholics out of their homes across the troubled district in south-east Orissa. The residents of Daringibadi, a block spread over 272 mountain villages, held regular meetings to ensure the violence did not spill over from the rest of the district.

It was the only block of the 12 in Kandhamal that saw no communal unrest. Residents have chosen social harmony over the ethnic divide after a social movement that helped them beat back moneylenders and poverty, after decades of impoverishment.

Now, as sporadic violence continues and more than 3,000 displaced Christians remain in relief camps guarded by Central forces, the people of Daringibadi are asking politicians to trade peace for votes in Kandhamal. “The party and candidate we will vote for must promise that they will work to restore peace,” says Deepika Pradhan (27), an active member of a women’s self-help group in Darsingibadi village.

Their approach has already forced many local politicians to tone down speeches that earlier harped on ethnic divides. “There are people in our community who may also be members of [radical Hindu groups] the RSS or VHP, but the Kui Samaj has never believed in violence,” says Lambodar Kahnar, whose social organisation was until recently pasting posters and pamphlets across the district condemning converts.

There is not much economic activity in Kandhamal, where only 4 per cent of cultivable land is irrigated and most people live off forest produce. It was much the same in Daringibadi, till the early 1990s.

The farmers here owned very little of what they produced, because most of them were indebted to moneylenders and traders. A turmeric or pepper grower, for instance, would typically get only a third of the price his commodity fetched on the wholesale market, because the rest went to the trader, from whom money had been borrowed for the cultivation.

The change began with women self-help groups and a sustained campaign to end dependence on moneylenders. Groups like Jagruti, a local voluntary organisation, helped expand the network of self-help groups, which now totals 640 in Daringibadi.

The result: The traders’ share in trade has fallen sharply, and so has the debt burden of farmers in the area. The changing political economy of Daringibadi has, in turn, created an excellent and efficient social network among its people, says Kailash Chandra Dandapat, secretary of Jagruti.

That network came in handy when the violence broke out. Even today, village heads remain alert against any incident that could blow up into a conflict.

Recently, in mostly Hindu Tirkuti village, residents handed one of their own over to the police because he was trying to instigate other villagers against Christians. “We have zero tolerance for such things,” says village head Pushpanjali Pradhan.
