Blackhawks trade Byfuglien in multi-player deal with Atlanta

(Reuters) – Stanley Cup champions the Chicago Blackhawks have released forward Dustin Byfuglien in a multi-player trade with the Atlanta Thrashers.

Sports

The 25-year-old Byfuglien, who scored 11 goals during Chicago’s run to their first championship since 1961, will head to Atlanta with center Ben Eager, defenseman Brent Sopel and prospect, Akim Aliu.

The Blackhawks receive a first and second-round pick in exchange, along with forward Marty Reasoner, winger Joseph Crabb and prospect Jeremy Morin.

Chicago have been forced to part with some of their players due to salary cap issues and lose Byfuglien after he netted five game-winning goals in the post-season.

“It is what it is. It’s part of the job,” Byfuglien told a local Chicago radio station. “You’re not going to stick in one spot the whole time, so I’ve got to go.”

Staying calm helps save stranded diver

Sea rescue authorities have credited an Esperance diver’s survival with his ability to remain calm after becoming stranded at sea overnight.

Peter Agnew, 46, was diving off the south-east coast on Friday, but when he surfaced his four-metre dinghy had drifted away.

He swam to Sandy Hook Island where he took refuge for the night, before swimming a further 800 metres the next morning to get help from a passing fishing boat.

Russell Palmer from the Esperance Volunteer Marine Rescue Group has praised Mr Agnew’s actions throughout the ordeal.

“He stayed calm the whole time when things didn’t work out for him, when he surfaced and realised his boat was gone, he didn’t panic, he stayed calm,” he said.

“[He] got himself up onto the rocks and … thought his situation out very well, in the end that’s probably what got him through it.”

Mr Agnew was discharged from hospital yesterday after being treated for dehydration.

“She kept saying, in a really spacey, weird British accent, ‘Like, I’m with the deejay. I to tally know the deejay. I’m here for the deejay,’” the New York Post quoted a source as saying.

The insider added: “She was slurring her words.”

After being let in, Barton “needed to be escorted to the deejay booth” where she proceeded to “stand for about an hour, dancing in her own world. I don’t think her eyes were open to full capacity — or even half capacity-the whole time she was there,” said the source. (ANI)

Rupert Grint says he doesn’t know what to do with all his money

New Delhi, July 6 (ANI): Rupert Grint, who plays Ron Weasley in the ‘Harry Potter’ film franchise, says that he doesn’t know what to do with all his money.

Grint, 20, only realised how rich he was when he was featured in Forbes’ list of top earning young superstars in 2007, reports the China Daily.

“There was a moment where I remember thinking, ‘I have no idea what I’m going to do with all this money,’ ” he said.

Despite his worries, the star has made every effort top put a dent in his wealth, buying a pick-up truck, banjo, ice cream van, hovercraft and a home for his parents – but still prefers other aspects of fame.

“Money isn’t the only good thing about the job. I’ve gotten to meet heroes like Robin Williams. Although, my grandfather spent the whole time doing Mrs. Doubtfire impressions,” Rupert said.

Rupert has also revealed that both he and Daniel Radcliffe have crush on their ‘Harry Potter’ co-star Emma Watson.

He told FHM magazine: “Emma’s a pretty girl. Have Daniel or I ever hit on Emma? Well, she’s quite popular with the cast. As for who has the worst crush on her – me or Daniel – I’d rather not say.” (ANI)

Murray insists he can handle Wimbledon hype by ignoring it

London, July 2 (ANI): British No.1 Andy Murray believes 90 percent of what is written about him is false.

Murray predicted the speed of his victory over Juan Carlos Ferrero would give him an advantage as he moved into the uncharted waters of his first Wimbledon semi-final against American Andy Murray.

The Guardian quoted the Scot as saying that his 7-5, 6-3, 6-2 victory was wrapped up within 1 hour 43 minutes on a day when temperatures reached 29 degrees in the shade, and therefore, he would be in peak condition to face twice-runner-up Roddick.

“Going into the semis, if I had another five-setter, it’s tough to recover from back-to-back five-set matches,” said Murray following a performance that got better as the match went on.

“I was only on for about an hour and 45 today, so it’s not going to take anything out of me physically and I should be 100 percent for the next match,” he added.

Murray said he would deal with the hype by ignoring it.

“It doesn’t make any difference to the way you perform, the hype. If you spend the whole time – if you work in media and spend a lot of time reading the papers, watching everything on the TV, all the things that are getting said on the radio – then you get caught up in it.

If you ignore it, you don’t realise it’s happening. I don’t read it because 90 percent of the stuff’s going to be untrue anyway,” he said. (ANI)

When Jacko lost art masterpiece bid to Sylvester Stallone

New York, July 1 (ANI): Late King of Pop Michael Jackson once apparently lost an art masterpiece bid to Hollywood star Sylvester Stallone.

Manhattan art collector Stuart Pivar recalled the time when the ‘Thriller’ star paid a visit to his Central Park West duplex to see 19th-century French painter William Bouguereau’s masterpiece “Pieta”.

The singer was said to have been transfixed with the 12-foot-tall painting of Mary holding a dead Jesus.

“He said one word over and over during that whole time — ‘Awesome!’ ” the New York Post quoted Pivar as saying.

Jackson reportedly sent his entourage into the foyer later, while he kept admiring the masterpiece.

However, Stallone allegedly put in his bid first. (ANI)

Girl with tattooed face admits lying about 56 stars in fear of furious dad

Melbourne, June 23 (ANI): A teenage girl who alleged she fell asleep while getting her face tattooed has confessed she lied and was up the whole time.

Kimberley Vlaminck had claimed she asked for only three stars to be tattooed near her left eye but was shocked to find 56 stars on her face after she woke up.

According to The Telegraph, the 18-year-old and her livid father had gone to the police and had been seeking 9,000 pounds in damages to fit the bill for laser surgery to remove the tattoos.

But the Belgian teen, who accused the Flemish-speaking tattooist for not understanding her French and English instructions, admitted she lied about falling asleep because her father was “furious”.

The newspaper reported Vlaminck owned up she wanted all the stars and was “fully aware” during the time she was getting tattooed.

“I asked for 56 stars and initially adored them. But when my father saw them, he was furious. So I said I fell asleep and that the tattooist had made a mistake,” News.com.au quoted Vlaminck as telling a Dutch TV crew. (ANI)

Lennon’s son furious at Springsteen over Glastonbury headlining

New Delhi, June 20 (ANI): John Lennon’s son Sean thinks Bruce Springsteen is an “outrageous” choice to headline the Glastonbury Festival.

Sean- the son of Beatles legend John and Yoko Ono – is shocked to hear that the ‘Born to Run’ singer has been roped in to perform at the British music festival’s most prestigious timeslot a week on Saturday night, reports The China Daily.

The 33-year-old musician said: “It’s shocking. I have been to Glastonbury a few times, I’ve even played a few, and it just didn’t seem like that was the kind of artist they had headlining. I heard they called him and he didn’t even know what it was.”

However, he’s happy ‘Heart of Gold’ singer Neil Young is due to perform, because – unlike Springsteen – Young has managed to “stay cool”.

He added to Britain’s The Sun newspaper: “I love Neil Young. I feel like he’s one of the only people who has managed to stay cool the whole time, which is really hard.” (ANI)

Formula One ace Button all set to get new long term Brawn deal

London, May 26 (ANI): Formula One driver Jenson Button, who has made a sensational start this year winning five out of six grand prix races, is all set to commit his long-term future to Brawn GP.

Button, who is leading the driver championships, is now the most sought after driver for a new contract by Formula One teams.

After Honda’s demise, Button was forced to give up his 8 million pound-a-year contract he had with the Japanese manufacturer. It led to Button signing a one-year deal with Brawn, resurrected from Honda’s ashes, and was forced to take a five million pound pay cut, The Independent reports.

The 29-year-old has since rewarded them handsomely by winning in Australia, Malaysia, Bahrain, Barcelona, and on Sunday in Monaco to lead the drivers’ standings by 16 points.

Brawn GP CEO Nick Fry feels such scintillating form will be enough to convince Button to stay, and ensure he is not tempted elsewhere.

“Jenson’s been with us a long time, and we’ve had failures and we’ve had successes. My objective, and our objective, is to have him for the rest of his career, and nothing’s changed on that front,” Fry said.

“It’s mutual that he would like to stay with the team, and after five race wins, we should be able to get something together.”

Asked as to whether Button’s value will rise further if he becomes world champion, Fry said: “I’m sure he and his manager are sitting there thinking his price is going up the whole time. But maybe the sponsorship for the team is going up too, so maybe we can afford it.”

With his win in Monaco, Button joined an all-star cast of drivers to have won five of the first six races after Alberto Ascari, Juan Manuel Fangio, Jim Clark, Sir Jackie Stewart, Nigel Mansell and Michael Schumacher, the paper reports. (ANI)

Sir Michael Caine ‘contemplating retirement if not offered good films’

London, Apr 28 (ANI): Veteran actor Sir Michael Caine has said that he would retire from films if no more good roles come his way.
Currently, the 76-year-old actor is doing a British film ‘Is Anybody There?’ in which he plays a retired magician, Clarence, who befriends a young boy whose parents run a retirement home.

“I’ve just finished a film called Harry Brown and between that and this I didn’t work for 18 months so you get the impression because this has come out and then I’m talking about Harry Brown, you think: ‘Boy, he’s making films the whole time,’” The Telegraph quoted him as saying.

He added: “I didn’t make a film for 18 months because quite truthfully I didn’t see a script that I wanted to do for 18 moths until Harry Brown came along.
“And now I don’t have a script to do. I have a very small part in Christopher Nolan’s Inception, but that’s just a friendship between he and I, it’s just a couple of days.

“I’m talking about a proper movie that I’m in – I don’t have one. And if one doesn’t come along that I want to do. I will be gone. I will be retired. So that’s how it is with me now.”

In ‘Is Anybody There?’ where Caine co-stars with David Morrissey, Anne-Marie Duff, Bill Millner and Leslie Philips, his character slowly develop dementia. (ANI)

Ronan Keating ‘planned funeral’ after cancer scare

Washington, April 20 (ANI): Ronan Keating was so scared after he discovered a lump on his testicles that he started planning his own funeral.

The Boyzone star, whose mother died of breast cancer, confessed that he was a bundle of nerves following the false cancer scare and had even short-listed the songs to be played during his final ceremony.

‘It was really scary. I thought I definitely had cancer,” Contactmusic quoted him as telling Britain’s Daily Mail.

“The lump felt very different and I knew straight away there was something there. I had written myself off. I had the songs picked for my funeral and everything,” he added.

The 32-year-old further revealed that despite reassurances from the doctors that the lump was harmless, he was still unable to be at peace during a holiday in South Africa.
He added: “I called my GP straight away. He told me it was probably fine but to come and see him when I got back. Being a hypochondriac I feared the worst. We went to the beach, the wine region and on safari, but I worried the whole time. “(ANI)

Halle Berry sticking on to her anti-marriage vow

London, Apr 9 (ANI): Reiterating her pledge of never getting married, Hollywood actress Halle Berry has said that she is happy that the man in her life thinks like her about conjugality.

The ‘Monster’s Ball’ actress took an anti-marriage stance after splitting from her second husband Eric Benet in 2006.

And the 42-year-old actress wants to stick on to her vow despite the fact that she’s found love and a family with model Gabriel Aubry.

“I’m done. I happened to find a person who feels done too, and he’s never even been married before. So it works,” the Daily Express quoted her as telling the new issue of Harper’s Bazaar magazine.

But now that baby Nahla is one-year-old, the actress do want to think about being a mum again.

She added: “My pregnancy was amazing. I was happy that whole time, I felt good, I had energy, I was like Superwoman. I wish I could feel like that for the rest of my life, that’s how fantastic it was.” (ANI)

McGrath says Twenty20 needs high energy level

New Delhi, Apr 7 (ANI): Australian cricket great Glenn McGrath has said India’s cash-rich Twenty20 league has uplifted the game to a higher level.

“It’s definitely different format of cricket. We take it too seriously. It is a quick and energetic game. You can’t afford to have one or two bad overs. So you got to focus the whole time, so it’s at different energy level being played so you got to be fit, ready to go,” he said after he was felicitated by a bunch of young cricket fans here.

The IPL, which involves many of the world’s leading players, was a huge success in its inaugural edition in India last year, primarily because it is structured around city-based franchises with a fan base in home and away matches.

The eight-team league would be staged in South Africa from April 18 due to security reasons.
The BCCI wanted to stage the event overseas after failing to get government clearance for security cover as the tournament’s dates clash with the general elections. (ANI)

Oz spinner McGain may get record for worst Test bowling figures

Cape Town (South Africa), Mar.21 (ANI): Fans at Cape Town’s Newlands ground have given Bryce McGain a new nickname and it’s not a welcome one – Mick Lewis.

McGain’s fellow Victorian infamously took 0-113 in the one-day international in Johannesburg three years ago when South Africa scored 9-438 to win.

Lewis holds the world record for most runs conceded in a one-day innings and McGain’s Test debut was shaping up like a similar shocker after Friday’s second day of the third Test against South Africa.

McGain, also known as cartoon character “Mr Magoo”, had figures of 0-102 from 11 overs.

This put the leg-spinner on pace for the world record in a Test innings for worst economy rate (minimum 60 balls).

South Africa reached 3-404 on day two in reply to Australia’s first innings of 209 and McGain was expected to get another opportunity on Saturday to improve his figures.

But it’s fair to say Australia coach Tim Nielsen wasn’t pleased with his initial efforts.

“He didn’t bowl anywhere near as consistently as we would like. e bowled both full and short,” Nielsen said on Friday.

“They obviously made a decision I think to attack him pretty hard. So he’s under pressure the whole time and the scoreboard’s ticking over. He can see the numbers going up against his name and I think the pressure just got a bit much today. It was a pretty hard initiation for him in Test-match cricket,” the Daily Telegraph quoted Nielsen, as saying.

With his Ashes hopes badly bruised, McGain wasn’t “bouncing around the change rooms and doing cartwheels” after the second day’s play, Nielsen added.

The coach indicated Australia may have fielded an unchanged side for all three Tests of the series in South Africa if No.6 batsman Marcus North hadn’t pulled out of the side with a gastro complaint.

Nielsen says McGain “has a bit of learning to do”.

“He’s disappointed mostly in the fact that he doesn’t feel as though he bowled as well as he could have,” Nielsen added. (ANI)

Tweed begs Goody to forgive his criminal past

London, March 5 (ANI): Jade Goody’s husband spent an entire night holding his cancer-stricken wife’s hand while begging for forgiveness for his criminal record.

Jack Tweed, who was temporarily released from prison, was recently found guilty of drunken assault on a taxi driver after losing his temper over the fare.

The 21-year-old was given a reminder that he would not be provided any special treatment and will be sentenced on March 26.

He later headed to see his better half at London’s Royal Marsden Hospital where she is recovering from a surgery to relieve her of excruciating pain.

The former jailbird was previously sentenced to 18 months in prison for attacking a 16-year-old with a golf club and served just four months before being released on a curfew and with an electronic tag.

Tweed revealed, after having obtained special permission from probation chiefs, he spent the night with the terminally ill Big Brother star.

“I was given permission to spend the night with Jade. I’m so happy – I just wish I could be there all the time,” the Sun quoted Jack as saying.

“I told her I’m so sorry for my behaviour in the past. It’s meant I haven’t been there for her the whole time.

“I told her I’ve let everyone down but have learned my lesson. And I said I’m worried that, once again, I won’t be there for her and the family when they really need me. I just want to be with her as much as I can,” he added. (ANI)

Katie Holmes blames weight loss on hectic schedule

New Delhi, Feb 16 (ANI): Katie Holmes has blamed her recent weight loss on a hectic schedule.

The 30-year-old actress, who recently wrapped up her stint on Broadway’s All My Sons, insists hard work and a fast metabolism are to blame for her slim figure, reports the China Daily.

Holmes said of her Broadway stint: “My metabolism was in full gear the whole time. I lose weight fast when I’m working so hard. It doesn’t matter how much I eat, I just get thin. It’s not the worst problem in the world to have though is it?”

Holmes, who has a two-year-old daughter Suri with her husband Tom Cruise, says it is possible to balance a successful career with having children.

“I happen to be a woman who believes she can have it all. But, we women can do an awful lot if we put our minds to it. And not only that, we can have fun doing it! Even when it’s crazy – which is pretty much most of the time – it’s fun. At least, that’s been my experience,” she said. (ANI)

Blair says he is still troubled over his decision to invade Iraq

London, Jan.30 (ANI): Former British Prime Minister and now Middle East envoy for the Quartet group of the US, UN, EU and Russia, Tony Blair, has revealed that he still agonizes over his decision to go to war against Iraq.

When he was asked whether he felt vindicated by his decision, Blair said: “I don’t know. Nobody knows. But of course I reflect on it, and am troubled by it, and feel a great sense of responsibility for it”.
In the interview that is to be aired today, Blair also delivers his frankest remarks about his wife, Cherie, and his property portfolio.

Blair said that it was not nice to have people distrusting his motives or saying that he had lied “but the most difficult thing in any set of circumstances is the sense of responsibility for people who have given their lives and fallen – the soldiers and the civilians.

“If I did not feel that, there really would be something wrong with me, and there is not a single day of my life when I do not reflect upon it . . . many times. And that’s as it should be,” The Times quotes Blair, as saying.
“On the other hand you have to take the decision and I look at the Middle East now and I think, well, if Saddam and his two sons were still running Iraq how many other people would have died and would the region be more stable?”
He admitted that he suffered from doubt over Iraq. “Of course you ask that question the whole time. You’d be weird if you didn’t ask that question.”

During the wide-ranging interview with The Times Magazine, in which he has given his detailed thoughts on the Middle East peace process, Blair compared President Obama to himself as a leader who is more interested in the practical than the ideological.

“I think there is a new generation of political leaders who find the very traditional pigeonholing rather redundant, actually. They have undergone this strange experience, certainly for me, but in a sense I think for Obama too, which is growing up with a Left politics that was the politics of ideology, and then as we’ve grown to political maturity and taken positions of power, we find that it’s the Right that’s got ideology,” said Blair.

Blair revealed that he has met Obama several times since their first encounter when he was on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

“He was introduced to me then as someone who was very clever and a great prospect for the future.”

He says he was moved deeply by Obama’s speech on race.

“That was when I understood that he had real political depth and imagination because it was not an ordinary speech. It showed a complete understanding of why people might feel as they feel but that actually it is time to move on. The thing he does brilliantly is to explain why certain sentiments are inconsistent with the future and can be put to one side,” said Blair.

The former Prime Minister, whose earnings have soared into the millions since he left Parliament, said that he did not feel guilty about having houses in London and the country, as well as his home in his former constituency of Sedgefield, now the base of the sports foundation. His place in the country was a “nice house but not a stately home”. (ANI)
