Amelle Berrabah ‘quits’ Sugababes

London, September 19 (ANI): Singer Amelle Berrabah has quit the all-girl band Sugababes, it has emerged.

The beauty was apparently unhappy after a row with bandmate Keisha Buchanan.

“Amelle has been desperately unhappy for a while. She was going to try and resolve things, but it must have got too much for her. They haven’t been able to overcome their row,” the Sun quoted a source as saying.

Last week her family had even called cops fearing that she was kidnapped when she locked herself away in her North London home after the argument with Keisha.

Meanwhile, 21-year-old Eurovision contestant Jade Ewen is reportedly set to replace Amelle.

The insider revealed: “Jade is ready to replace Amelle. She is going to be shooting a video with them in Los Angeles on Monday.” (ANI)

SunTec wins two strategic customers in Middle East

Trivandrum/United Arab Emirates, Sept 16 (ANI/Business Wire India): SunTec, the leading provider of Relationship-based Pricing and Centralized Billing solutions, has announced two strategic wins in the Middle East region, one of which has helped the company to gain a foothold in Port Operations Billing – its fifth operating domain.

One of the largest banks in UAE has invested in SunTec’s Relationship-based and Centralized Billing solution, while a leading Port Operator of the region has signed up to SunTec to automate and centralize the pricing and billing operations for their vessels as well as cargo operations, helping them to offer a convergent bill to customers and effectively manage multiple contracts.

The solution will be implemented in multiple phases at the leading bank, and by the end of phase-I in December 2009 their ‘Customer Benefits Program’ will go live for retail banking.

The bank will thus be among the first few in UAE offering comprehensive customer benefits programs. SunTec’s solution being the pivot, the bank will be able to scale up their benefits programs to customer with ease.

Furthermore, in future, the bank will leverage SunTec’s solution for streamlining and automating their pricing and billing functions across enterprise.

The solution offers pertinent pricing innovations for the leading port operator also.

The complex multi-national operations of modern-day ports call for streamlined Relationship-based Pricing. New models like cost-based billing have become more relevant, as containerised trade is gaining prominence across the globe.

The situation demands differential pricing to be offered to customers based on the value they bring in.

“With these wins, SunTec has not only gained considerable footprint in the Middle East region, but also established its multi-industry compatibility,” said Nanda Kumar, CEO of SunTec.

“We conceptualized and created our core pricing and billing platform, horizontal in nature and flexible enough to address the pricing and billing requirements of any transaction-based vertical, all the while, helping our customers to imbibe best practices from multiple industries,” added Kumar. ‘Mysterious messages’ penned by MJ in final hours emerge

London, September 13 (ANI): A string of messages penned by Michael Jackson in his final hours have come to light.

Post-its notes and sheets of paper, scribbled as “wishes for the world” have reportedly been found on the mirror in the late singer’s bathroom.

The notes allegedly show the King of Pop’s bizarre state of mind before he died of drug addiction on June 25, reports the News of the World.

Pals of the singer believe Jackson was using the notes as means to prepare himself for his comeback concerts in London.

Note number one, found on the right of Jackson’s gold-framed mirror, apparently read: “I am so grateful that I am a magnet for miracles.”

Note number two, pinned to the bottom of the mirror, a message in large handwriting said: “Love, no violence ever!” And underneath, in smaller handwriting, he had added: “Remember a beautiful future promise of tomorrow.”

Note number three was a startling reminder to perform the hit charity single he recorded with soul legend Lionel Ritchie in 1985, saying: “Do We Are The World in show”.

Note number four read “Call Temperton”, referring to British songwriter and producer Rod Temperton, who co-wrote several Jackson songs including Thriller and Rock With You.

A source said: “It’s worrying that he had to write reminders about things as obvious as these while he was rehearsing for his tour…But the drugs he was taking obviously had a huge impact on his mind and memory.” (ANI)

Roman Catholic church issues “sex” prayer for faithful couples!

London, Sept 2 (ANI): Excuse the pillow talk – and move straight to your bed’s side and recite a specially composed prayer before having sex – a prominent Church group has advised Roman Catholic couples.

And the prayer, which appears in the Prayer Book for Spouses, is being encouraged to remind couples that intercourse is a selfless act, not driven by hedonism.

The prayer implores God “to place within us love that truly gives, tenderness that truly unites, self-offering that tells the truth and does not deceive, forgiveness that truly receives, loving physical union that welcomes”, reports The Daily Mail.

The 64-page book, published by the London-based Catholic Truth Society, adds: “Open our hearts to you, to each other and to the goodness of your will.

“Cover our poverty in the richness of your mercy and forgiveness. Clothe us in true dignity and take to yourself our shared aspirations, for your glory, for ever and ever.”

According to the Rt Rev Paul Hendricks, who is the Auxiliary Bishop of Southwark, the prayer’s inclusion was ‘brave but good’.

“I suppose it is a bit idealistic but it is recognising that God is at the heart of the marriage relationship between husband and wife,” he said.

“It is important for the Church to affirm the value of marriage and family life and I suppose this is a particular way of doing that.

“Perhaps it is something that has not been tried, certainly for a while – I can’t remember seeing something like that before,” he added.

The book contains prayers for every stage of marriage and family life. (ANI)

Salman Khan ‘interested’ in buying new IPL team

Mumbai, Aug. 26 (ANI): Salman Khan is reportedly in talks to a stake in the Indian Premier League.

The actor on Wednesday met IPL chairman Lalit Modi here to understand the bidding process.

“Yes, Salman came to see me with the possibility of buying an IPL team. We were just exploring the possibility of what the process would be. And he has been interested for quite a while. He is interested in a new team. He talked to me in the past. I think he is a serious buyer,” Modi said.

Two new IPL teams are to be introduced in 2011. Early reports say Khan is interested in bidding for the Nagpur or Kochi team.

Last year, the average bid was 150 million dollars per team, so Salman will need a serious amount of cash.

Bidding for the new teams will take place in January. The big IPL players will also be back on the market next year.

Shah Rukh Khan, Juhi Chawla, Shilpa Shetty and Preity Zinta are the other star owners of IPL teams.

Shah Rukh Khan owns Kolkata Knight Riders, a team that has been at the bottom of the table in both the IPL seasons. The team is co-owned by Juhi Chawla.

Shilpa Shetty took over as co-owner of the Rajasthan Royals in the second season. Preity Zinta was seen cheering her team Kings XI Punjab through both the seasons. (ANI)

National Literacy Mission to substantially focus on women: Sibal

New Delhi, Aug 21(ANI): The Government on Friday said that the National Literacy Mission is being recast, so that, 80 per cent coverage of the mission is of women, whose literacy rate at present is at an unacceptable level of 54 per cent.

Union Minister for Human Resource Development Kapil Sibal said this while chairing the 11th Meeting of the National Literacy Mission Authority (NLMA) here on Friday.

Sibal informed NLMA members that while the total budgetary support during the last three plans for the programme was Rs. 2862.95 crore, the outlay for the 11th plan was at a much higher level of Rs.6000 crore.

Sibal said that the Mission would be run in active participation with the State Governments unlike in the past when the mission was run directly from the centre through the different implementation agencies at the district level.

He also said that Adult Education Centres would be set up at the Gram Panchayat, which will be the unit for implementation of the programme.

He also informed that the Panchayat would work in tandem with the community to implement the programme.

Sibal further highlighted that a Curriculum Framework for Adult Literacy will be developed with adequate reflection of locally relevant issues and aspects.

He pointed out that unlike in the past, each learner will be tagged and tracked for the learning achievement. Besides an efficient MIS system, concurrent monitoring systems will be put in place for field validation.

Thirty two of the forty four members of the NLMA participated in the meeting, which passed the agenda put before it.

Union Minister for Rural Development C.P. Joshi, Minister of State for Human Resource Development D. Purandeswari, Secretary for Department of School Education and Literacy Anshu Vaish, were among those present in the meeting. (ANI)

Oval Test might not be Ponting’s last Test on English soil

London, Aug 21(ANI): Australian captain Ricky Ponting has said that he hasn’t thought about the final Ashes Test match at The Oval being his final Test match against England on their soil.

Ponting is unlikely to play in the next Ashes series on English soil, which would be held in 2013, but he avoided declaring The Oval Test as the last.

“I haven’t really thought about whether this is my last Test here or not, I’ve just been focusing on my preparation going into the game,” The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Ponting, as saying.

“I’m really enjoying cricket at the moment, I’ve never put a time frame on when I’m thinking about finishing my international career,” he added.

The 34-year-old also said that he has really enjoyed playing with the fresh lot of players, following retirement of numerous senior players in the past one year.

“It’s been one of the big challenges in my career. We’ve had some good successes along the way and long may that continue,” he said.

“I need a good break or some time away at some stage to think about when the end might be, but that won’t be for a while yet. I’m really enjoying it now, hopefully I can make some runs this week and not have to worry about it for a while,” he added.

Ponting further said that he might play in England next year, if their cancelled Test series against Pakistan gets rescheduled in England.

“One thing I’m hoping is that we might play Pakistan here in those (cancelled) games next year, which means I’ll be back here for sure,” Ponting said. (ANI)

Early goal by Lebanese striker mellows India in Nehru Cup starter

New Delhi, Aug 20 (ANI): The fifth minute goal by Lebaneon made it tough for India to bounce back into Nehru Cup starter, Indian football coach Bob Houghton after losing 0-1 to Lebanon said on Wednesday.

Talking to reporters here after losing 0-1 to Lebanon, Houghton said, “It was overall quite a good performance. The first goal early on was a massive set back. It took us a while for us to actually get over that. But I thought the last 20 minutes of the first half and in the second half we were quite dominant. But you know it was always going to be difficult to score goals on the outfield out there.”

Lebanon defender Ali Al Saad fired in a low, curling free kick from 22 yards following a foul by N.P. Pradeep in the fourth minute as Lebanon started at a furious pace to rattle defending champions India.

The hosts went close a few times on either half but Lebanon, clearly the better side, tightened their defence and used quick counter-attacks to keep the hosts from mounting sustained pressure.

The Lebanese coach Emile Rustom said that the uneven surface and coarse grass made it tough for them to play to their potential.

“It will be very hard to play on this ground. The grass should have been cut before this game. We suffered a lot because of the temperature and our opponents also,” said Rustom.

India hopes to come up with a far more clinical performance in their next three games.

Kyrgyzstan face Syria in the next game of the round robin competition on Thursday.

Syria, Lebanon, Kyrgyzstan, Sri Lanka and India feature in the August 19 to 31 tournament, being organised mainly to prepare the hosts for the 2011 Asian Cup in Qatar. (ANI)

Ponting’s legacy as Oz captain on the line at The Oval

London, Aug.19 (ANI): The fifth Ashes Test, which begins at The Oval from tomorrow, will be a defining one for Australia captain Ricky Ponting.

Victory at The Oval will hand Ponting something that is demanded of any Australia captain worth his salt, a series victory over England, in England, reports Fox Sports.

A draw or worse and Ponting will have failed in two attempts to overcome the old enemy – each series with the world’s No.1 team.

That Ponting engineered only the second 5-0 Ashes whitewash in between times will be remembered fondly, but, unfairly, it will be overshadowed by his failings in England.

A stalemate will be enough for Australia to retain the Ashes, but the man they call Punter will have just one outcome in mind: victory.

Ponting’s standing as an all-time batting great is secure, but for a captain who’s leadership qualities constantly come under question, it’s not stretching things to say his legacy is at stake.

“The pressure is on. Your captaincy gets rated on series wins, but also on how we go against the old enemy. It wouldn’t please Ponting to have another series defeat in England on his CV,” says ex-captain Allan Border.

“I’ve said from the start about how much it would mean to me to win here. It’s a chance I’ve been waiting for this whole tour and a chance the whole team has been waiting for,” Ponting adds.

Should Australia lose, Ponting will join Billy Murdoch as the only captains of Australia to lose two Test series in England. It would be an immovable blemish on his record, and grist to the mill for Ponting’s numerous detractors.

“He’s probably not saying too much publicly, but privately it would be burning that he wants to right that wrong. He wants to come away as an Ashes-retaining captain,” Border told Fox Sports.

Pushing 35, this will almost certainly be Ponting’s last tour of England. The Oval might even be his last Test match against the Poms. He’s had a mixed series with the bat and as a tactician, all the while contending with the goading of British media and fans who have not forgotten Ponting’s ill feeling in 2005.

Ponting’s vice-captain and heir apparent, Michael Clarke, has meanwhile been in astonishing form. Probably the player of the series to date, Clarke led by example with two very Ponting-like knocks, backs-against-the-wall centuries, at Lord’s and Edgbaston.

Despite Ponting’s advancing age and Clarke’s obvious leadership potential, Border does not believe The Oval result will have any influence on Ponting’s position as captain of Australia.

“I get the feeling Ponting’s very comfortable with where he’s at, both as a player and as a captain,” said Border, who started Australia’s long-running hold over in England in 1989, and who was an Ashes-winning captain three times.

“Stepping down as captain and continuing as a player doesn’t work in our system. Ricky will know when it’s the right time to hand over the reins,” he adds. (ANI)

Washington, Aug 18 (ANI): Radiohead have confirmed that they will unveil their new songs at the forthcoming Reading and Leeds festivals.

The ‘Just’ rockers have made their new song ‘These Are My Twisted Words’ available to fans as a free download, and confirmed that they are likely to perform it later this month.

The song was even leaked online last week.

“So here’s a new song, called ‘These Are My Twisted Words’. We’ve been recording for a while, and this was one of the first we finished. We’re pretty proud of it. There’s other stuff in various states of completion, but this is one we’ve been practising, and which we’ll probably play at this summer’s concerts. Hope you like it,” Contactmusic quoted guitarist Jonny Greenwood as having written on the band’s Dead Air Space blog.

The band recently released another new song, ‘Harry Patch (In Memory Of)’, to download from their website.

Earlier it was rumoured that the group would release a new EP this week, but it has not materialised as yet. (ANI)

Pakistan requires ‘months’ for Waziristan push, says Army

Islamabad, Aug 18(ANI): Pakistani Army has said that it would require months to prepare for a ground offensive against the Taliban in their South Waziristan stronghold on the Afghan border.

Lieutenant-General Nadeem Ahmed, Commander of the 1 Strike Corps in Mangla in Pakistan Kashmir, said this while reacting to comments made by visiting US envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Holbrooke.

Holbrooke has already said that Washington is scrambling to get the equipment the Pakistani Army needs and that the timing of any ground operation was up to the army and government.

Pakistani forces have surrounded Taliban fighters in their tribal lands in South Waziristan, where Pakistani warplanes have attacked Taliban positions and US drone aircraft have launched several missile strikes that apparently killed militant leader Baitullah Mehsud.

Lt. Gen. Ahmed further said that the Pakistani military is waiting for the right time and is trying to create the right conditions for launching a future ground offensive by imposing a ‘tight’ blockade around the area.

“Once you feel that the conditions are right and you have been able to substantially dent their infrastructure and their fighting capacity, then you go in for a ground offensive,” The Dawn quoted Lt. Gen. Ahmed, as saying.

“That may happen in winter, or even beyond, probably,” he added.

Lt. Gen. Ahmed also informed that many of the military’s helicopters were being used in an offensive against militants in the Swat valley, which needs maintenance before being sent to Waziristan. (ANI)

Bob Houghton confinement of Indian team faring well in Nehru Cup

New Delhi, Aug 14(ANI): Bob Houghton, chief coach of Indian football team, on Friday exuded confidence at the team and denied that players were under any sort of pressure prior to the Nehru Cup 2009.

Houghton said this while addressing a press conference in New Delhi on Friday.

India will be the defending the title that it won in the last edition of Nehru Cup held in 2007.

The Nehru Cup is scheduled to kick-off on August 19 at the Ambedkar Stadium in the national capital when hosts India will take on Lebanon.

Houghton said that India is well in contention to win the Nehru cup as India is on a roll of winning international competitions.

“I don’t think it is adding pressure to the boys. I think it’s nice feeling for them to come to a tournament where they are regarded by all the other countries that are taking part here to be the team to beat. And that’s because we won that thing two years ago and then we won the challenge last year,” said Houghton.

“It has changed people’s opinion about us. And all these countries coming here they will be concerned about the games against India thinking India is the team to beat and that’s a very comfortable position to be in,” he added.

He further said that the players are not taking any of the opponents lightly and it is important that India starts the Nehru Cup campaign with a victory.

Indian football team returned from their tour to Spain last week, where they played practice matches against Tercera Division sides.

Houghton also stressed on the need to allow players recuperate from injuries before allowing them to play in matches.

“Finally, players don’t return to playing national leagues until they are absolutely fit irrespective of the importance of the upcoming games. And this is something we will do with (Sunil) Chettri. I don’t think there is no way we will play (Sunil) Chettri if we thought there was any doubt about his fitness,” he said. (ANI)

Yousuf needs more time to be back to best in international cricket: Younis Khan

Lahore, Aug. 13 (ANI): Pakistan cricket captain Younis Khan has stepped in support of middle order batsman Mohammad Yousuf, saying he needs time to settle down after staging a comeback following a long lay-off from international cricket.

“He is back in the team and before that he was out of international cricket for quite a while. He just played in the Indian Cricket League and there is a difference between ICL and international cricket. He did not play international cricket for more than a year now and any cricketer staying out of the game for this long would need time to adjust,” Khan said.

Yousuf, who came back in the Pakistan team after the PCB lifted the ban on him which was imposed following his joining the rebel Indian Cricket League (ICL), failed to impress during the just concluded Sri Lanka series.

He hit a gritty century in the first Test match of the three match series at Galle, but looked awfully out of form in the one-day series.

Earlier, taking the responsibility for humiliating defeats both in the Test and One-Day series in Sri Lanka, Khan said he would not succumb to pressure to resign.

“I accept the responsibility of defeat, but will not apologise to anyone nor will I resign as captain because it’s part of the game to lose and win,” Khan said.

Khan, 31, lambasted critics and former Pakistani cricketers who have launched a relentless attack on him for team’s dismal performance during the Lanka series.

“I am trying my level best to lead the team and achieve the best results but some people want me to relinquish the captaincy, which I won’t. Am I not a good captain, or do I lack leadership qualities?” he said. (ANI)

Melbourne, July 14 (ANI): A new survey has revealed that Aussie kids are now being given a special celebrity kind of birthday treat by their parents – a 500 dollars-an-hour Hummer ride.

According to Hummer hire companies across Sydney, there is a rising demand by parents looking to give their kids a birthday with a celebrity touch.

Clint Comelli, from Hummer Limousines Australia, which charges 500 dollars for an hour ride, said that the chance to party like a rock star was behind its new popularity.

“The Hummers with the big wheels and a lot of chrome are among our most popular,” the Daily Telegraph quoted him as saying.

“It’s most popular with boys between about 9 and 15 years but girls are starting to get in on it too, especially as we have a hot pink Hummer. With some parties, the kids arrange to do something else like bowling or going shopping.

“Otherwise we pick them up from home for an hour ride. We have a karaoke machine or they can plug their iPods in and have a disco-style party while inside.

“It’s been popular for school formals for a while, but more and more we are doing kids’ parties,” he added.

Wafa Elmol hired a Hummer for the birthday of her daughter Dallal, who described it as a “once-in-a-lifetime moment”.

“Even weeks after it, it was all we talked about,” Dallal said.

ISRO chief satisfied with lunar data compiled by Chandrayaan

Bangalore, July 12(ANI): G Madhavan Nair, Chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), on Sunday expressed satisfaction with the successful collection of data about the moon by Chandrayaan, country’s maiden lunar mission.

Madhavan Nair stated this while addressing the 9th convocation of International Institute of Information and Technology at Bangalore on Sunday.

He mentioned that the tracking and detection of several factors by Chandrayaan are important steps in mapping the mineralogical composition of moon’s surface which in turn would enable further study in its origin and evolution.

“I think I am happy to say that Chandrayaan has been completely successful in collecting all the data what we wanted. First was the three dimensional of the lunar surface, also getting the mineral content of the surface and then trying to use the extra instruments,” said G. Madhavan Nair.

“All this went on very well and we are more or less very happy that the mission is complete,” he added.

Chandrayaan-1 was launched on October 22 last year.

Government set to spend more to boost economic growth: Mukherjee

New Delhi, July 11 (ANI): Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday said that the government would resort to more borrowings to increase ‘public expenditure’ for a higher economic growth.

The minister said this while addressing the Central Board of Directors of the Reserve Bank of India here in the national capital on Saturday.

“Obviously I choose to come back to the path of our growth trajectory. And as the private investment cannot be expected to meet the full requirement in immediate time, that’s why it was decided to step up the public expenditure and it had to be depended heavily on larger borrowing, but we will manage it with the cooperation and support and competence of RBI,” Pranab Mukherjee said.

“There should not be any apprehension that private sector would be crowded out. We will meet requirements of the private sector from the market and government borrowing will be managed in such a manner that there is no deception in the market in favour of government’s borrowings,” he added.

Earlier on July 2, the finance ministry had said that growth could rise to 7 percent this year-towards the high end of the range of private forecasts-and subsequently increase to 8.5 to 9 percent if the government adopted sweeping reforms and accelerated infrastructure development.

The government had slashed factory duties and stepped up public spending to pump the economy as the growth rate tripped to 6.7 percent in 2008-09 from 9 percent or more seen in the previous three years. (ANI)
