Monkey as butlers’ help maimed US soldiers in Afghanistan lead a normal life

London, May 6 (ANI): American soldiers and officers who were physically disabled while fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq, are being given monkeys as butlers to perform their daily tasks.

The clever capuchins are trained to react to where a laser pen is shined. Provided by a charity, the primate pets help amputees and paralysed soldiers lead normal lives.

Wheelchair-bound Corporal Tim Jeffers, who lost both of his legs, his right eye and part of a hand in Iraq, said of his monkey butler: “He has changed my life and is my best friend.”

Jeffers is among dozens of US war veterans to get a trained primate called Webster, The Sun reports.

He said: “After six months in a military hospital I struggled with daily tasks like turning on a light switch or using a TV remote. But Webster changed all that. He leaps into action at the point of a laser pen and can fetch on command.

“Webster can operate a remote, get objects from a high shelf and open jars of peanut butter.”

The primates, which have been trained at a cost of 30,000 pounds each, are the brainchild of a charity called Helping Hands: Monkey Helpers For The Disabled.

A fund called The Paralysed Veterans of America now provides with much-needed grants.

South American capuchin monkeys were found to be the best primates to train and are also good-natured. Regular monitoring of the creatures ensures their own health and well-being. (ANI)

Jane Fonda returns to action after back surgery, hip and knee replacement

London, May 3 (ANI): Jane Fonda is back in action following a back surgery, hip and knee replacement.

Five months ago, Fonda was physically very weak confined to a wheelchair after undergoing a surgery.

But Fonda some time back showed off her perfect body.

The 72-year-old actress worked out a little on the launch of the first World Fitness Day.

The Oscar-winning star paid homage to her iconic workouts in a tight yellow Lycra top with stretchy black leggings at the launch in Atlanta, Georgia, reports The Daily Express.

“It can be a determining factor in the quality of your life and it’s never too late to start,” Jane said referring to value of exercise.

“I’ve had a hip and knee replacement and I am interested in bringing boomers and seniors like me into the exercise world because I know it will enhance their lives. I am pretty happy how my new knee and old-new hip are holding up.

“I talk about them as I’m working out, just to show folks life goes on after replacements – just like an old jalopy keeps going with new fenders and hubcaps.

“I like my crow’s feet and I like my laugh lines,” she added. (ANI)

Brit women arrested for trying to smuggle dead relative on plane

London, Apr 7 (ANI): Two Brit women tried to fool authorities by checking in a dead relative on to a plane at Liverpool John Lennon Airport, according to officials.

The pair put the corpse in a wheelchair and even placed sunglasses on him to try to fool staff.

But while trying to check the deceased man in, suspicious employees alerted the authorities and the women were arrested at the scene.

It is believed that the 91-year-old German national had died a day earlier, and the women were trying to smuggle his body back home.

“The airport staff at the check in were not happy with the situation,” the Sun quoted a source as saying.he women, 41 and 66, were questioned on suspicion of “failing to give notification of a death” and bailed.

The pair, from Oldham, Greater Manchester, managed to transport the body from their home to the airport by taxi.

It is said that the driver was left “upset and devastated” after being informed of the incident.

The duo was apparently attempting to smuggle the body back to avoid fees for repatriation, which could cost up to 3,000 pounds.

Merseyside Police confirmed the man was dead on arrival at the airport.

“We are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 91-year-old German male passenger at JLA, due to fly out to Berlin on Saturday,” said a spokesman.

“Two people are helping police with their inquiries.

“We are still investigating the exact circumstances of the death, but don’t believe it is murder or manslaughter at this stage,” added the rep. (ANI)

Disabled find a place at Canberra Hospital

Going to work is something most of us take for granted, or even complain about.

But for people with severe disabilities the biggest frustration is that they are often locked out of the workplace because no-one will give them a job.

Too often that can leave them bored, lonely and depressed.

But at the Canberra Hospital, several people with disabilities have been given jobs, giving them a paycheck and – more importantly – confidence.

Ben Pattrick has cerebral palsy and is confined to a wheelchair.

He is now working for a living in the hospital’s mail room, and his mother Cheryl says he could not be happier.

“I think it will help him develop into a much more mature young man,” she said.

“It’s given him the opportunity to meet people, feel like he’s achieving in life and it’s just been fabulous.”

In many jobs, a wheelchair would be hindrance, but for delivering mail it has advantages.

Mr Pattrick’s colleagues say he covers at least eight kilometres a day, saving them a lot of legwork.

“Ben came into the team and just made a big difference for us, taking a lot of the load off us in the runs he does,” said the head of the mail room, Peter Humphries.

“It’s working out great.”

Ms Pattrick says the job gets Ben out of the house and gives him a salary – things most of us take for granted.

“Part of it is just the opportunity to be here and meeting people and talking with people and not being isolated,” she said.

“I think that’s really important.”

More work needed

Most people would agree that people with disabilities are as entitled to work as anyone, but the hospital mail room is still an exception, not the rule.

ACT Health Minister Katy Gallagher acknowledges governments have been too slow to hire people with disabilities.

“I don’t think we’ve done exceptionally well in the past,” she said.

“I think there’s more work to be done and that’s certainly the view ACT Health has taken.”

“Particularly for Ben it’s delivered the right outcome for him, which is a job.”

Ms Pattrick says more workplaces need to consider hiring people with disabilities.

“I think people are often a little bit too scared,” she said.

“They’re just really not sure what’s involved so that tends to close a lot of doors.

“But I think this is a really good example of what you can do when various people work together.”

Dame Elizabeth Taylor refuses to undergo vital surgery

London, Mar 29 (ANI): Dame Elizabeth Taylor has refused to undergo any further surgeries despite the crippling neck pain she has.

Taylor, 78, who now mostly uses a wheelchair, is reportedly feeling too weak to have any more operations.

She has been in hospital more than 100 times in the last 25 years to attend to back problems and have her hips replaced.

According to the Sunday Express, despite suffering from scoliosis – a curvature of the spine – and coping with a sore neck, Taylor is refusing any more operations.

“I won’t go as far as to say she has given up but she is adamant she can’t face another operation,” the Daily Star quoted a source as telling the publication.

“Some mornings her neck is in such acute pain she is barely able to lift her head.

“She spends most of the day sitting in a chair with her head slumped on her shoulder. It’s the only position in which she feels anything like comfortable.

“It must be hellish for her but she says she is more sick of seeing the inside of an operating theatre than anything else.

“She told me: ‘This is no way to live, forever in hospital’, but the truth is she urgently needs an operation to relieve the pressure and pain her crooked spine is causing,” the source added. (ANI)

Quadriplegic man robbed at shopping centre

Police say a man is to face court today accused of robbing a man in a wheelchair at a shopping centre in Sydney’s south-east.

Investigators say the 31-year-old stole a bag containing a wallet and mobile phone from a quadriplegic man in the Eastgardens car park on February 22.

Police examined security camera footage and they arrested a man at a home in Maroubra yesterday.

The also seized several items of clothing.

The man has been charged over the theft and was refused bail.

Drag racing accused front court

Two men have pleaded not guilty to causing the death of another while drag racing at Woodville North in Adelaide.

Scott Stephen Fenney, 23, and Corey Michael Sully, 26, are jointly charged after Fenney crashed into a car with a young couple in it last year, killing a 22-year-old man.

They entered their pleas in the District Court in Adelaide and the matter was adjourned until next month.

In a separate case, an alleged drag racer charged with causing a fatal crash in Magill Road a year ago pleaded not guilty to causing death by dangerous driving.

Riccardo Rocha, 23, had his leg amputated as a result of the crash.

He appeared in court next to the dock because of his wheelchair.

Appeal after ‘cowardly’ attack on disabled tourist

The girlfriend of a wheelchair-bound man who was bashed at a railway station in Sydney’s west last night has described the attack as cowardly.

The 35-year-old Canadian man is having surgery for a fractured skull, after police say he was attacked with metal poles and stomped on at Mount Druitt.

Detectives say the attack was prolonged and unprovoked.

Police have arrested a 17-year-old male and are still looking for another teenager.

The injured man’s girlfriend, Kristin Sharrock, says she feel sick when she thinks about what happened.

“It’s a cowardly, horrendous, horrific thing that they’ve done,” she said.

“If anyone knows who the second offender is, [we ask] for them to come forward with any information.

“Let’s get them off the street and stop it from happening to anybody else.”

The Police Minister Michael Daley says his thoughts are with the victim.

“We know he’s in hospital getting the very best of medical attention,” he said.

“We hope and we’re confident that he’ll be okay.

I want to congratulate the police for not only being on site in two minutes but having made an arrest so quickly.”

Police are hoping CCTV footage will help them find the other suspect.

Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

World’s first patient implanted with smallest rechargeable neurostimulator completes one year

Washington, Sep 12 (ANI): The world’s first patient to have been implanted with the smallest ever neurostimulator for chronic pain is celebrating the one-year anniversary of his procedure today.

One year ago, former U.S. Army parachutist Adam Hammond became the first patient in the world to have been implanted with an Eon Mini neurostimulator.

Adam got the chronic pain after a skydiving accident when his parachute deployed incorrectly, leaving him in a coma with life-threatening injuries, including a severed spine, broken femur, fractured pelvic bone, and torn aorta.

Although Adam recovered from his accident, he battled chronic pain that left him dependent on a wheelchair.

But, today, the picture has completely changed and Adam is active and exercising, studying for his law degree and no longer in need of a wheelchair.

Adam also went to Washington, D.C., recently to meet with representatives and advocate for pain legislation.

However, Adam is not the only chronic pain sufferers who have been helped with neurostimulation, an FDA-approved therapy that uses electrical pulses to interrupt pain signals to the brain.

Over 60,000 St. Jude Medical neurostimulation devices have been implanted in patients in 35 countries around the world. (ANI)

Ali visit to Hatton’s health center took him by surprise

London, Aug.27 (ANI): Boxing legend Ricky Hatton admitted his “jaw hit the floor” when he met his all-time hero Muhammad Ali.

Ali, who is fighting Parkinson’s disease, visited Hatton’s health centre in Manchester at the start of a UK tour.

The three-time heavyweight champion of the world, 67, was expected to arrive in a wheelchair, but instead told his aides he wanted to walk into the gym.

The Daily Star quoted the 30-year-old as saying: “A few years ago if you’d said Muhammad Ali would be coming to my local town, Hyde, I’d have said: ‘No way’. You knew it wouldn’t happen. The fact he has put himself out to come to my gym brings a tear to the eye.” (ANI)

Sandra Bullock knew hubby was ‘The One’ after bike accident

Washington, July 13 (ANI): Sandra Bullock says that she knew that her husband Jesse James was “The One” for her, after she looked after him following a near-fatal bike accident.

The actress said that she had realised that the TV tough guy and motorbike enthusiast was the man for her, when he was rushed to a hospital just three months into their relationship.

“The day I knew was after he got in a racing accident in California about three months into our relationship. I realised how bad it was when we were driving down to be with him and they said that the chaplains were already there,” Contactmusic quoted her as saying.

“I said, ‘Whatever condition he’s in, I want to be the one to make the decision as to how to make him better,’ and I realised I didn’t have that right. I knew then that I was in for the long haul and I thought, if he was (going to be) in a wheelchair or whatever, I was willing to take it on.

“When couples make the vows “for better, for worse” they rarely think of the worst that can happen. But I thought the worst from the beginning, so every day is kind of a little blessing,” she added. (ANI)

Elizabeth Taylor denies being on ‘suicide watch’

London, Jul 7 (ANI): Legendary actress Elizabeth Taylor has blasted reports that she is on a “suicide watch”, following the devastating loss of her close friend Michael Jackson.

Taylor, 77, who is said to have collapsed in her Hollywood home upon learning of the ‘Thriller’ superstar’s sudden death on June 25, released a broken-hearted statement revealing the depth of her friendship with Jackson.

“My heart… my mind… are broken. I loved Michael with all my soul and I can’t imagine life without him… I still can’t believe it. I don’t want to believe it. It can’t be so,” the Daily Star quoted her as writing.

“He will live in my heart forever but it’s not enough. My life feels so empty. I don’t think anyone knew how much we loved each other. The purest most giving love I’ve ever known. Oh God! I’m going to miss him. I can’t yet imagine life without him… I will love him forever,” she wrote.

But Taylor, who has been in a wheelchair for several months, sparked fears that her health was in further decline on July 5 when she posted a note on her Twitter.com page about an upcoming hospital visit.

“I wanted you my friends to know that I’m going into the hospital Wednesday or Thursday to complete a test I was in the middle of,” she had written.

However, Taylor was quick to dismiss rumours linking her medical tests to tabloid reports, which claimed Jackson’s death left her on the verge of taking her own life.

“Although my grief over Michael could not be any deeper, I am not on suicide watch as some of the cheaper ‘rags’ would have you believe,” she said.

“I will always love Michael from the depth of my being and nothing can separate us,” she added. (ANI)

Soon, wheelchairs controlled by tongues

Washington, July 1(ANI): Scientists have developed a novel headset that makes it possible for a person suffering from spinal cord injury to precisely control a wheelchair or computer using the tongue.

The “tongue drive”, being trialled at Georgia Tech University, Atlanta, could also give astronauts a third hand in difficult situations like spacewalks.

Invented by electrical engineer Maysam Ghovanloo and Xueliang Huo, the device works by using two sensors to track a 5-millimetre-wide magnet attached to the tip of the user’s tongue.

The magnet is attached to a person’s tongue using surgical adhesive.

The sensors – implanted in a wireless headset – accept fluctuations in the strength of the magnetic field as the tongue moves, and transmit the signals on to a computer, where they are interpreted and acted upon.

By moving the tongue in predefined patterns, the user can steer a cursor on a screen, direct a wheelchair, and can even on switch on a TV.

Conventional methods include “sip and puff” devices, which are operated by blowing or sucking on a straw held in front of the mouth.

However, according to the Ghovanloo, tongue-drive system can accept a wider variety of commands.

“Some don’t like their sip and puff because it sits right in front of their face, and is like a signal of their disability,” New Scientist magazine quoted Ghovanloo as saying.

“Our design can be made less conspicuous,” Ghovanloo added.

The researchers say that they are in talks with a dental expert about installing them into a plastic retainer that fits inside the user’s teeth. (ANI)

British Mumbai attack victims abandoned by their own government

London, May 10 (ANI): The British government and different authorities seems to have abandoned Will Pike and Kelly Doyle, who were seriously injured in the November 2008 Mumbai terror attack, as they have been continuously neglected by the Foreign Office and their insurance company.

Pike, who was more seriously injured than his girlfriend Doyle, is disappointed by the government’s pathetic and hugely discouraging behavior.

After months of struggle to garner support for his treatment, a government department which offered him a final payment, from a Red Cross charity fund, of just 15,000 pounds to help him adjust to life in a wheelchair, the Guardian reports.

“When you read about these things in the paper, when they happen to other people, you assume there is some sort of system in place. You assume these people must be being looked after. But actually what we felt as the days and weeks passed, me and Kelly and my father, was a sense of despondency, of being let down, of just sinking through the system. We’ve been in this hole ever since,” Pike said.

After the medical team at Mumbai had arranged for Pike to be transferred to University College hospital (UCH), he was flown back to London.

It took Pike nine hours after arriving at UCH before being finally shifted to a medical ward, which shows the careless attitude of the concerned authorities.

Pike said he expected officials to visit him or at least get in contact with him or the family to offer some help, but it was not to be.

“I remember waking up every day at UCH thinking: ‘OK, someone will probably get in contact with us today.’ I remember even thinking I might get a call from Gordon Brown! I thought, this isn’t some everyday occurrence.

I remember thinking it wouldn’t be too much to ask for the leader of the country to show a sign of condolence, a sign of caring,” he added. (ANI)

Tennis star Dokic says her father abused her

Sydney, May 4 (ANI): Australian tennis player Jelena Dokic has said that her father, Damir, physically abused her during their tumultuous relationship.

Dokic, who is estranged from her father, told how she had fled from her family in 2002 to escape the violence.

In an exclusive interview with the Fairfax magazine Sport and Style, Dokic said: “I’ve been through a lot worse than anybody on the tour. I can say that with confidence. When you go through stuff like that, playing a tennis match is a pretty easy thing to do. … When I win today it’s so much more satisfying.”

After a rocky relationship with Australian tennis fans, Dokic won back the nation with her feisty performance in the Australian Open this year when she reached the quarterfinals after having to rely on a wildcard for entry.

Dokic, 26, went through years of mental turmoil after packing her bags and fleeing what she called “the situation”.

“There was a period where there was nothing that could make me happy … I wanted somebody’s else’s life.”

Dokic has the support of another tennis player, Mary Pierce, who also suffered at the hands of her father, Jim. However, while Pierce has the support of her mother, Dokic was alone.

Dokic gave credit to her boyfriend, Tin Bikic, for helping her recover.

“Whatever has happened, good or bad, will always stay there. It makes you what you are. But I think it’s a little bit selfish [to feel sorry for yourself] … you see a person in a wheelchair and you can’t help feel, ‘Well I’m pretty lucky to be here … we are healthy, we still have our lives ahead of us … Then you feel lucky,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted her, as saying.

Damir Dokic hung up when contacted by the Herald. (ANI)

Ex-Nazi removed from US home to be deported to Germany

SEVEN HILLS(Ohio): US agents on Tuesday removed former Nazi death camp guard John Demjanjuk from his Ohio home to deport him to Germany where he
faces charges of helping murder Jews in World War II.

Five US agents were seen removing Demjanjuk, 89, from his home and easing him down the steps in a wheelchair to take him to a waiting white van as family members gathered on the front porch, crying and holding each other for support.

Demjanjuk was to be taken to a local airport to board a Gulf Stream jet headed for Munich later on Tuesday, the Cleveland Plain Dealer said.

Surgeon helps wager fix his back

FOR RAMESH, a 19-year-old daily wager from Deoria, the future looked bleak after he taking a fall from a building on February 8. With his vertebra (Lumber-1) broken, the lower half of his body got paralysed.

His family took him to several places for treatment, including BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur and CSMMU in Lucknow, but to no avail. On Tuesday, Ramesh could move his legs slightly and was able to move independently on a wheel chair.

Dr Rishi Saxena, orthopaedic surgeon, who carried out the crucial operation at Balrampur hospital, says Ramesh can get back to work in a couple of months. “Wherever we went for treatment doctors said the problem had no solution and turned us away.

Someone advised us to go to SGPGIMS. We came here for we could not afford the expenses there,” said Ramesh’s father, Bhikari. “Usually such cases are not taken up by orthopaedic surgeons.

Only a few neuro-surgeons perform corrective surgery for vertebra,” said Dr Rishi Saxena. The hospital authorities waved off all charges owing to poor economic status of Ramesh while a few things like titanium rods were purchased.

He can now move on a wheelchair and will be normal in a few months,” said Dr Saxena.

17 die in Jalaun boat mishap, rescue mission continues

SEVENTEEN BODIES of devotees who had drowned after their boat capsized in Yamuna at Beejalpur Ghat have been fished out during rescue operations, till Sunday evening in Jalaun district. Over 24 hours have passed but the operation has not concluded as the bodies of nearly 20 other devotees are yet to be fished out.

There were over 60 devotees when the boat capsized on Saturday. As many as 17 devotees managed to swim ashore safely while private divers and locals rescued eight others.

The incident occurred when devotees were returning from the ancient Jalauni Mata Temple. Rescue operations were on till Sunday night and thousands of people had gathered at the site to witness those at work.

Nine family members of head constable Mahendra Singh Senger, who is posted at Kudaura police station in Jalaun, died in the incident. Inspector General of Police (Kanpur range) Bhanu Pratap Singh visited the spot and tried to pacify the mob, which was angry at the “irresponsible behaviour” of cops of Auraiyya and Jalaun.

The cops had reportedly shirked taking responsibility on the pretext that the area did not fall under their jurisdiction. IG Singh assured the enraged people that an inquiry would be initiated.

After the boat capsized in Yamuna, villagers, who witnessed the incident, jumped into the river and made efforts to rescue those in the boat. Officials also summoned the divers of Farukkabad Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), police divers of Etawah, Auraiyya and Jalaun to assist the ongoing operation to fish out the bodies.
