Everybody wants a Nano

For some it will be their first car, for others it will be a cute addition to an already impressive fleet. Whatever the reason, thousands flocked to Tata Motors’s dealerships across Delhi on Thursday as the company opened bookings for the Nano.

“Two-wheelers are not safe on Delhi’s roads anymore,” said Manoj Kaushik, an executive with a publishing house. “I commute about 50 km a day and this car will save me from the city’s extreme weather.

” Dinesh Kapoor, a Paschim Vihar resident, said, “It seems to be a good car – easy to manoeuvre and park, perfect for short trips. I already have two cars for my family – an Innova and an Esteem – and have booked a Nano specially for my wife.

” Delhi’s 12 Tata dealerships received about 800 bookings. “Various banks and financial institutions have put up their counters at the showroom,” said Manish Dutta, sales manager (Nano), A-One Motors, Barakhamba Road.

Hundreds did the booking online. Many people queued up at bank counters and outlets of Westside and Croma to book the small car.

And, this is just the start. Dealers are expecting a bigger rush at the weekend.

The bookings will conclude on April 25.

First phase of Nano bookings begins

The first phase of bookings for the Rs. 1-lakh ‘dream car’ Tata Nano began on Thursday, April 9, with crowds thronging the Tata Motors showrooms, and specially-opened booking counters in banks, including State Bank of India, which is Tata Motors’ key partner in selling and receiving the booking forms.

The forms, costing Rs. 300, are also available at Tata Indicom centres, Titan showrooms, Westside and Croma stores. The booking for the wonder car – which can also be done online – will close on April 25.

With the cost of the three Nano variants lying between Rs. 1.23 lakh and Rs. 1.72 lakh in Delhi, the booking amount, between Rs. 95,000 and Rs. 1.4 lakh, can either paid in one go or be financed from SBI and fifteen other banks. Only one lakh customers – chosen through a computerized draw within 60 days after the bookings close, will be applicable for availing the Nano launch price.

Since countless counters have been opened for bookings, there was neither any visible scamper for forms in the showrooms, nor are there exact figures available with regard to the number of bookings done on day 1.

Nonetheless, Sumeet Partha – branch manager, Tata Motors Finance Limited – said: “Among the applicants, most of them were from the middle class, be it service holders or businessmen. Most preferred loans instead of buying Nano at one go!”

More than 51,000 Nano booking forms sold by Tata Motors in five days

Despite the rather heavy booking amount, ranging between Rs. 95,000 and Rs. 1,40,000, the dealers of Tata Motors alone have had more than 51,000 forms sold to the excited customers for the small wonder Nano, during the five days since the forms were made available from April 1.

The Nano forms are being sold for Rs. 300 – out of which Rs. 250 is retained by Tata Motors, while Rs. 50 goes to the dealer. Sources familiar with the proceedings say that Tata Motors will expectedly earn nearly Rs. 30 crore from the sale of about 10 lakh forms through 218 dealers.

With the company planning to manufacture only 50,000 cars in the first year, the number of forms sold is staggering, more so since it does not include the additional 30,000 forms sold at other locations like SBI, its subsidiaries and associates; other preferred financiers; and outlets of Tata Finance, Croma, Titan, Westside, and Tata Indicom.

While one of the dealers said that the response to the Nano has been so “huge” that it ran short of forms at one of its dealerships; an official at a Tata Motors’ Mumbai-based dealership said: “The response has been quite good, even though customers have not been given a chance to test-drive the car!”

Nothing Nano about the buzz around it

POOJA KHANDELWAL (21) accompanied by her mother and two siblings went to Infinity Mall in Andheri to buy clothes and cosmetics on Thursday. They ended up shopping for a car.

The Khandelwals belonged to the throng of visitors gathered at the Westside store to get a look and feel of the world’s first Rs 1-lakh car – the Nano. The car, which is on display at the store till April 25, attracted onlookers and prospective buyers who examined it in detail, from its rear engine to its horn.

A store official, who did not wish to be named, said that the walk-in customers had doubled from the previous day. He estimated 75 booking forms were sold in the first four hours that the car was showcased.

A gaggle of college students took turns to sit inside the car. Brijal Gaglani (19) was impressed by the Nano’s legroom but lamented the lack of an ashtray.

Business executive Abhishek Anand (27) had no complaints. “It is small, beautiful and spacious,” he said.

Anand, who left work mid-way to see the Nano, immediately bought the Rs 300 registration form. “I’ve finally found a small car where my 5 ft 11 inch frame can fit without brushing against the roof,” he said.

“I am very eager to buy the Nano.” An official explaining the car’s features to customers said many senior citizens had expressed a keen desire to buy the Nano.

As if on cue, an elderly gentleman asked him about the security features of the car while a grandmother enquired about the available colours.Captain D.N. Banerjee and Captain Kondal, colleagues in the merchant navy, who rushed from their office to buy the booking forms, couldn’t stop raving about the Nano.

The Nano will be Kondal’s third car, and he wants to buy it for his wife. “It’s not cramped and the visibility is superb.

It’s perfect for city roads,” he said. “Hats off to Ratan Tata,” said Banerjee who plans to gift the Nano to his daughter.

The Khandelwals, who liked the slick and roomy interiors of the car, also bought their registration form. “We are a tall family of five and we all fit perfectly in the Nano.

But the car is only for the girls of the family,” Pooja said with a smile.

My creation is a tribute to Mondrian: Wendell Rodricks

Kolkata, April 3 (IANS) Designer Wendell Rodricks, who unveiled his collection at the fashion week here, says he is so influenced by legendary Dutch painter Pieter Cornelis Mondrian that he is sleeping with Mondrian’s designs in mind.

‘I am sleeping with Mondrian in my head for months before finally coming up with my new collection based on his works of unique geometric abstraction where all curved lines are eliminated. My creations are a tribute to him,’ Rodricks told IANS.

He showcased his latest collection The Mondrian Minimalist at the first Kolkata Fashion Week here Thursday.

‘Mondrian used all primary colours like red, blue and yellow for his painting. But I decided to do it my way, using my signature black and white for the fabric, while keeping the primary colours for the accessories and shoes,’ he said.

Rodricks said this is the first time the entire collection is being showcased in a fashion show.

‘I showed 19 pieces out of 40 of The Mondrian Minimalist collection at the recently held Delhi Fashion Week. This is the fist time the entire collection is being showcased here.’

The collection will be available at Westside stores across India by April-end.

On his next collection, Rodricks said: ‘I am working on knits and jerseys. In fact, I am doing certain experiments with the concept that has never been tried in the fashion industry.’
