London riots confine India, England cricketers to hotel rooms

The rioting and looting that began in London on Saturday spread to more areas, including Birmingham, north of London, casting a serious doubt over the third Test match between England and India.

Attackers smashed shops and looted property in the city of Birmingham in central England, police said, in the first sign of the riots spreading beyond the capital.

The two teams, who are scheduled to play the third Test in Birmingham beginning on Wednesday, were confined to their hotel rooms.

A few England players expressed their concern over the situation.

Star batsman Kevin Pietersen made his frustration clear. “They have just locked our hotel in Birmingham Riots just started here. Insane!” he wrote on Twitte

r

England all-rounder Tim Bresnan also voiced his concerns on Twitter. “Just seen rioters in Birmingham fleeing down the main street followed by load of police in full get up. What's going on?”

All-rounder Stuart Broad added on his Twitter page, “Police vans all around Birmingham where we are right now.”

The violence erupted late on Saturday in London's northern Tottenham district when a peaceful protest over the police shooting of a suspect two days earlier turned violent.

By Monday, the violence had spread to parts of the south of the city, including Clapham Junction, one of London's busiest railway junctions, Woolwich in the capital's southeast and the Ealing area of west London.

Briton jailed for life for killing NRI business partner

In a widely followed case, a British solicitor has been jailed for life for arranging the contract killing of his NRI business partner to claim 1.5 million pounds insurance to pay off his debts.

John Cort, a solicitor in the east Midlands town of Leicester, hired Brain Farrell, a hit-man from Bayswater in west London, to kill 51-year-old Vina Patel.

The body of Patel was found at the bottom of the stairs at the office of Cort and Co solicitors on 15 January 2009. Cort tried to make the death look like an accident.

Cort and Patel were business partners in the company.

54-year-old Cort and Farrell, 37, were found guilty of killing Patel and were sentenced to life imprisonment.

The Nottingham Crown Court yesterday sentenced Cort to a life term with a minimum term of 29 years while Farrell has been jailed for a minimum term of 27 years.

Justice Linda Dobbs at Nottingham crown court ruled that the murder was “premeditated, calculated and ruthless”.

“You deprived the family and friends of Vina Patel of a cherished person. That you, Mr Cort, were able to have murdered a close friend of 30 years, erstwhile lover of 20 years and partner prepared to help you with your divorce, reveals your true character. You are a controlling person who will stop at nothing to achieve your aims. You were the driving force behind the murder,” Dobbs said.

Patel suffered a broken neck as well as other injuries. The court evidence suggested she had either fallen because she was being attacked or had been attacked then her body arranged to make it look like an accident.

Surendra Patel, the husband of the deceased, said after the verdict: “We wanted justice for Vina, this is it. The man (Cort) is completely callous, there was no reaction at all. I think he is the devil. If you ever want to meet the devil, he is it.”

The court was told that Cort “lived a life he simply could not afford” and had 171,000 pounds of debt.

Weeks before Patel’s death, Cort had persuaded her they should increase their life assurance cover from 500,000 to 1.5 million pounds, claiming he had a serious illness.

The life insurance policy had been taken out by Cort and Patel to protect the company in case of the death of either partner.

Besides, more than 650,000 pounds went missing from the company’s client account, which should have been paid to customers or mortgage lenders.

The company was investigated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) after Cort’s arrest.

Detective Chief Inspector Chris Redfern said although Patel’s death originally looked like an accident, thorough examination of the scene and an expert post-mortem examination led to an investigation which identified Cort and Farrell as those responsible for her death.

Chelsea win dramatic Cup final to seal Double

Chelsea overcame a resilient Portsmouth side, who made a mockery of their pre-match billing as lambs to the slaughter, to win a dramatic FA Cup final 1-0 and clinch their first League and Cup Double on Saturday.

Didier Drogba maintained his remarkable knack of scoring at Wembley Stadium with the winner from a 59th minute free-kick after Chelsea had hit the woodwork five times in the first half while Frank Lampard missed a late penalty.

In an astonishing match of twists and turns, Portsmouth’s Kevin-Prince Boateng, who had scored from the spot in the semi-final at Wembley, saw his 56th minute penalty saved.

The triumph gave Chelsea a second straight FA Cup final victory, after they beat Everton last season, and was a third success in four seasons for the west London side.

It was Chelsea’s sixth FA Cup triumph and fifth in 13 years as they became the seventh English club to win the double and the first team since Arsenal in 2003 to retain the trophy.

Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti, who has won the Double in his first season in England, told reporters afterwards: “Its a fantastic victory for me, I am very happy.

FANTASTIC SEASON

“We won’t do anything special to celebrate, I will follow my players and my friends. Wine, sure, champagne. It is right to have a celebration, the team had a fantastic season.”

“It has never happened in my career to hit the bar or post five times in one half… and we didn’t start too well in the second half but I was not worried because we were in control of the game and had chances to score.”

Portsmouth manager Avram Grant said: “It was a very difficult season. It is a season I will not forget. I have won a lot of games in my life, trophies and everything, but this was unbelievable. We always played against the odds.”

In the first final between the champions and the bottom team in the top flight, Chelsea dominated the first half but were thwarted on five occasions when Drogba (twice), Frank Lampard, Salomon Kalou and John Terry all hit the bar or post.

Despite the pressure on their team, Portsmouth’s incredibly vociferous fans made the greater noise inside the sun-drenched stadium and stayed to applaud their players even after defeat.

The match only turned Chelsea’s way when Boateng’s penalty, awarded after Chelsea’s Brazilian substitute Juliano Belletti brought down Aruna Dindane, was saved by Petr Cech’s legs.

Drogba fired home a 25-metre free-kick three minutes later that went in off the inside of a post to maintain his record of scoring in all of the six competitive matches he has played for Chelsea at Wembley — three semi-finals and three FA Cup finals.

Lampard fired wide from the spot in the 88th after Michael Brown clattered into him but Chelsea had already just about done enough to become the seventh club in English history to win the Double, the 11th time the feat has been achieved.

OVERWHELMING FAVOURITES

Chelsea were quoted at 5-1 on to beat Portsmouth who are in administration, have debts of 138 million pounds ($201.2 million) and finished bottom of the Premier League.

Some pundits had predicted a record FA Cup final victory following Chelsea’s 8-0 trouncing of Wigan Athletic when they clinched the league title at Stamford Bridge last Sunday.

But Portsmouth, many of whose players may have been playing their last match for the south-coast club because of the financial problems and relegation, weathered the storm and at times dominated Chelsea for possession and passing.

However, the Londoners had only one first half scare with Cech producing a reflex save to deny Frederic Piquionne.

Pompey’s first close shave came after 14 minutes when Lampard shot against the outside of David James’s left-hand post with a 25-metre drive.

Kalou was guilty of one of the most blatant misses in any Cup final after 27 minutes when he shinned an Ashley Cole cross against the bar in front of an open goal from four metres.

Chelsea captain Terry and Drogba, twice, also hit the woodwork before halftime.

The Ivory Coast striker, who will lead his country at this year’s World Cup finals, showed his utter frustration by smacking the post with his hand.

Chelsea had four other chances in the opening period but needed a stunning reflex save from Cech to keep out an instinctive close-range effort from Piquionne after 22 minutes.

Portsmouth had the brighter start in the second period but there was an air of inevitably about the outcome once Boateng saw his penalty saved and Drogba scored.

The icing on the cake for Chelsea’s England defender Ashley Cole was a place in the record books as he climbed the steps to the Royal Box and collected his sixth FA Cup winners’ medal.

Memorable FA Cup final caps incredible English season

Mega-rich Chelsea beat impoverished Portsmouth 1-0 to win the FA Cup and claim the Double on Saturday but that was about the only predictable outcome of a remarkable afternoon at Wembley.

Chelsea, who lifted the Premier League title last week with an 8-0 win over Wigan Athletic, were odds-on favourites and some pundits predicted they could beat the record winning Cup final margin of 6-0 set when Bury beat Derby County 107 years ago.

Portsmouth had other ideas and weathered a ferocious onslaught in the first half with plenty of help from the Wembley woodwork which Chelsea hit five times in 30 minutes.

They restricted the champions to a single goal but that was enough for the west London side to lift the FA Cup for the sixth time to retain the trophy they claimed last year.

In a way the twists and turns of the final reflected in 90 minutes the twists and turns of the domestic season, which saw the lead in the title race change more than 20 times before Chelsea pipped Manchester United by a point to become champions.

The winning goal finally came after 59 minutes when Didier Drogba smashed home a free kick from 25 metres that this time hit the post and went in with David James helpless.

YELLOW BOOTS

The goal came just three minutes after Portsmouth midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng, whose yellow boots dazzled in the Wembley sunshine but failed to blind keeper Petr Cech, saw his penalty saved by the Chelsea stopper’s feet.

But the Portsmouth fans, whose club have gone through five owners and an administrator this season, been docked points and suffered relegation with debts of 138 million pounds ($201.2 million), never stopped cheering.

Their cries of “Play Up Pompey” rang around Wembley, drowning the cheers of the Chelsea fans, who became more anxious and withdrawn as the match went on. They could not relax, even after their team had taken the lead.

The stadium was awash with the blue-and-white of both teams but it was the flag-waving Pompey section that became increasingly animated as the absorbing game ebbed and flowed.

As Portsmouth manager Avram Grant said afterwards: “If anyone ever doubts if it is good to buy this club, it is a good club. If you see the fans today, no competition, they won the final by far.”

The football was not that great but the tension was tangible as Chelsea edged closer to their first double and Portsmouth tried to salvage some silverware from their most traumatic season.

SCUFFED SHOT

Chelsea had a chance to wrap it up when their England international Frank Lampard was awarded a penalty with two minutes to go but the occasion even got to the normally unflappable midfielder who scuffed his shot wide.

It was not Chelsea’s most embarrassing moment of the day though — that belonged to Salomon Kalou who somehow shinned the ball against the bar just four metres from an open goal in the first half, one of the worst misses in any FA Cup final.

On the touchline Chelsea coach Carlo Ancelotti and Chelsea’s former coach Grant extolled one last effort from their men.

Ultimately Chelsea held out, collected their medals and danced with the Cup as Portsmouth’s players, many if not all of whom had played their last match for the club, cheered their fans then collapsed on the field in dismay.

Grant, Chelsea boss when they lost the Champions League final to Manchester United on penalties two years ago, was widely acclaimed by both sets of fans after the match.

His future is as uncertain as Pompey’s who could yet start next season with a 17-point penalty in the Championship (second division) if they do not come out of administration soon.

On the day, though, balance sheets and finances, tax demands and missed wage payments were far from anyone’s mind.

Although an intriguing final ended in a predictable triumph for the favourites, Portsmouth’s unquenchable spirit should helpt them through the tough times that are still ahead.

Chelsea beat Portsmouth in dramatic final to seal Double

Chelsea overcame a resilient Portsmouth to win a dramatic FA Cup final 1-0 at Wembley Stadium on Saturday and achieve their first League and Cup Double.

Didier Drogba got the winner with a 59th minute free-kick after they hit the woodwork five times in the first half and missed a late penalty. Portsmouth also missed a spot kick.

The triumph gave the west London side successive FA Cup final victories after they beat Everton last season.

Although the newly-crowned Premier League champions dominated relegated Portsmouth in the opening half, they were thwarted on five occasions when Drogba (twice), Frank Lampard, Salomon Kalou and John Terry all hit the bar or post.

Germany captain Ballack limps off in FA Cup final

Chelsea midfielder Michael Ballack limped off in the first half of Saturday’s FA Cup final against Portsmouth at Wembley Stadium leaving Germany coach Joachim Loew with an anxious wait on his captain’s fitness.

Ballack, who is out of contract at the west London club at the end of the season and could have been making his last appearance for the Premier League champions, took a heavy knock on his ankle after a late tackle by Kevin-Prince Boateng.

The 33-year-old Ballack, who has 98 international caps, has already been named in Germany’s preliminary squad for the World Cup finals in South Africa which start on June 11.

The visibly distressed Ballack was replaced by Brazilian Juliano Belletti after 44 minutes with the score at 0-0.

Germany will face Australia, Serbia and Ghana in Group D at the World Cup finals.

Ashley Cole ‘tries it on’ with blonde in a toilet!

London, May 16 (ANI): Ashley Cole ruined his marriage with his infidelities and it seems that despite claiming to be heartbroken, the footballer hasn”t changed at all.

Blonde beauty Lucy Phillips, 26, has revealed on Facebook that she recently chatted to the football star in Swanky Sundays at the Supper Club in Notting Hill, West London, and how he tried it on with her in a toilet cubicle, reports the Mirror.

Lucy said: “I was walking past the guys’ toilets when I saw a big group of blokes gathered round. I looked in and saw Ashley Cole holding court, and I went in.”

She says that Cole ‘then tried it on with her,’ but insisted that she ‘laughed it off,’ telling him she wasn’t interested and, after a few minutes, she exited the toilet.

Not to be deterred, Lucy said that Ashley gave it one more shot later in the evening.

“A few minutes after I saw him in the toilets I was with my best friend and we walked past Ashley and his mates. They saw us and called us over. I sat on the arm of Ashley’s chair and we chatted. After about 10 minutes we decided to leave and enjoy the rest of our night,” she said.

She added: “I definitely didn’t kiss him – I would remember if I had. I’m not like that at all.” (ANI)

Brit girl, 8, lied to mum about rape, fearing ”she wouldn”t get any sweets”

London, May 14 (ANI): An eight-year-old girl in England, who was allegedly raped by two 10-year-old boys last October, has admitted in a court that she lied to her mother about the incident because she feared she would not get any sweets.

In the trial at the Old Bailey, the child confessed that all three kids had pulled down their own underwear.

She believed it was a “naughty” act, and had not wished to tell it to her mother.

The girl answered the questions of Linda Strudwick, who represented the older boy, via videolink connecting her to the court.

On October 29 last year, the girl she had been playing outside her house in Hayes, west London with the boys.

The court heard how the girl joined the older boys and then they all went into a block of flats, then a bin shed next to the flats, followed by a field nearby. It is there that the alleged rape took place.

Strudwick asked about the moment the youngsters exposed themselves to each other, in a form of “I”ll show you mine if you show me yours”, reports The Telegraph.

Referring to her client, she said: “He took his pants down… The younger boy took his pants down… and you took your knickers down?”

To each question, the girl replied “yeah”.

Strudwick said: “That was a little bit naughty, but nothing too terrible. You were all giggling at the time because it was naughty and it was silly.”

The girl smiled and said shyly: “Yeah.”

Strudwick said: “You knew that you had done something that was naughty? You didn”t want your mum to find out because if your mum found out, no sweeties.

“When your mum came up to you, your mum was not looking very pleased with you? You knew you were going to get into trouble?”

Again, each time the girl replied: “Yeah.”

Strudwick said: “You told her the boys had taken your knickers down because you didn”t want your mother to think that you had been naughty? Is that right?”

The girl replied: “Yeah.”

Justice Saunders asked: “What were you worried about with your mother?”

“No sweeties,” the girl replied.

“Because if you had been naughty you would get no sweeties? Had you been naughty?

“A tiny bit,” said the girl.

Justice Saunders then told the child she had done nothing wrong.

“I am a judge and I know when people have done anything wrong, you have done nothing wrong,” he said.

The boys, now aged 11 and 10, have denied two charges each of rape and two charges each of attempted rape of a child under 13.

The trial continues. (ANI)

Ex-Neighbours star Valance lacks confidence to perform on West End stage

London, May 13 (ANI): A West End debut still eludes former Neighbours actress Holly Valance – because of her stage fright.

“I would never start on the West End,” the Telegraph quoted Valance, as saying.

She added: “I think you need to earn your stripes and start small.

“I don”t have the confidence to [perform in the West End] and I need to start small and work my way up like everyone else.” (ANI)

Samantha Cameron, kids to move into Downing Street ‘as soon as possible’

London, May 13 (ANI): Samantha Cameron, British PM David Cameron’s wife, will shift to Downing Street with the couple’s two kids ‘as soon as possible,’ it has emerged.

The family is likely to live in the grand apartment above No 11 used by the Browns and Blairs.

However, Samantha will not leave the family home in Kensington, West London, for a few weeks so as not to disturb the schooling of kids Nancy, six, and Elwen, four.

Meanwhile, Mr Cameron will have to commute for a few days while industrial cleaners finish work at Downing Street.

“There is a lot more to still sort out as they have not really given much thought to what they”d do if we got into Downing Street. Nobody wanted to discuss it beforehand, in case it didn”t happen,” the Sun quoted a close Cameron aide as saying. (ANI)

Chelsea party hard as the landmarks tumble

Like many parties it started a little nervously but eight goals later, the tension relieved with a rout of Wigan and the Premier League title sewn up in emphatic style, Chelsea’s fans could finally let loose.

As the goals rained in and the landmarks fell, Chelsea’s fans bounced themselves into a frenzy of celebration that, after their championship-clinching 8-0 victory, was certain to last long into the west London night.

Nicolas Anelka’s opener after six minutes had eased most of the nerves and it was a lively atmosphere as Chelsea sought the victory they needed for their first title in four years.

But with Wigan catching the eye in every sense with their luminous orange shirts and their probing midfield passing the home fans could be forgiven for starting to get edgy again.

They need not have worried, however, as long as Frank Lampard was on the pitch.

The remarkable midfielder had set up the opener and when he was brought down in the box by Gary Caldwell – penalty converted and Caldwell sent off – it was game and title over, even if Didier Drogba threatened to sour the mood with a show of petulance at not being allowed the honour of the spot-kick.

At Old Trafford, Manchester United had also slipped into a 2-0 lead en route to a 4-0 win over Stoke City but it barely registered among the Stamford Bridge faithful.

Salomon Kalou tucked in the third and Anelka volleyed an excellent fourth to take Chelsea’s tally to 99 league goals.

It was a Premier League record but the crowd wanted the 100. No team had managed it since Tottenham Hotspur scored 111 in 1962/63 and that was from four more games.

UNPRECEDENTED SUCCESS

They got their wish and then some. Drogba almost managed it with an overhead kick but he was not to be denied and seized on the loose ball to head in the fifth.

It took him to the 27 he wanted and brought the ton up for Chelsea but there was more to come and this time Drogba was allowed the spot-kick duties to smash in his 28th.

Four goals had come in 15 minutes of mayhem but it was not over as Drogba completed a memorable hat-trick and make it seven for Chelsea for the fourth time this season.

Even coach Carlo Ancelotti, enjoying the crowning moment of his first season in charge, realised it was time to loosen the collar as he responded to the crowd’s promptings by delivering a wave and clenched-fist salute.

Ashley Cole had the final word, volleying-in a last-minute eighth to register Chelsea’s best-ever top flight victory.

The tannoy announcer played Madness’s One Step Beyond, a boot-stomping hit from three decades ago when Chelsea were in deep financial trouble and relegated after finishing a distant last in the old first division.

Anyone then suggesting they would be on the verge of a League and FA Cup Double after a decade of unprecedented success would have been marched off for medical treatment.

But they are now a major force in the domestic and European game and the fans who suffered for so long are still milking it.

The builders quickly erected the presentation stage as the blue and white ticker tape rained down.

The club’s past, in the form of the red-uniformed Chelsea Pensioners, and the future, shown by the Youth-Cup winners’ lap of honour, came together on the halfway line and then the players re-emerged to take centre stage.

Owner Roman Abramovic almost cracked a smile and Ancelotti took his coat off – no Jose Mourinho-style histrionics from the gruff Italian – as the club’s anthem “Blue is the Colour” reverberated around the ground and sent the fans home on a delerious high.

John Terry, the club captain whose season has been so tainted by tabloid coverage of his private life, was the last to receive his winners medal and joined by his team-mates he joyously held aloft the Premier League trophy.

“It’s been hurting for three years, seeing Man United win it season after season…now it’s their turn to watch us today,” he said amid the din of the popping champagne corks.

Ex-KGB spy buys the Independent for a pound

London, Mar. 26 (ANI): Russian billionaire and former KGB spy Alexander Lebedev has bought The Independent and Independent on Sunday for just a pound.

The paper’s Dublin-based owner, Independent News & Media (INM), was so desperate to get rid of the titles that it has agreed to pay Lebedev 9.25 million pounds to cover one-million-a-month-losses it is expecting to incur this year.

“This is a most satisfactory and positive outcome for the titles, their staff and for INM’s shareholders. The transaction will be immediately earnings accretive for INM. After our successful refinancing in late 2009, this transaction marks an important milestone in the repositioning of our group,” The Telegraph quoted INM CEO Gavin O’Reilly, as saying.

After announcing the ownership, Lebedev’s son Evegny pledged to retain the Independent’s “in-depth investigative reporting and campaigns which promote transparency and seek to fight international corruption”.

The titles will be sold to Independent Print Limited, the company Lebedev set-up specifically to buy the papers.

The deal is expected to complete in May 2010.

The newspapers’ staff will remain at the Independent’s current offices at the Daily Mail’s headquarters in west London.

Lebedev will now control three British newspapers following his acquisition of the Evening Standard for one pound last January.

On Wedesday, INM reported a 31-million-euro pre-tax loss in 2009.

Revenue fell 15 percent 1.25 billion euros.

The group said advertising revenue at The Independent and IoS dropped 33 percent at constant currencies. (ANI)

Arsenal better than Chelsea, same league as Barca: West Ham manager Zola

London, Mar 22(ANI): West Ham United manager Gianfranco Zola has said that Arsenal is a better footballing team than Chelsea.

Zola, who played as a striker for Chelsea from 1996 to 2003, said that Arsenal is even on par with their Champions League quarterfinal opponents Barcelona, widely considered as the best team in Europe.

“When we played Chelsea last week they probably didn’t play with the same quality or intensity as Arsenal. Arsenal are terrible, if you leave them a little bit of space because they punish you,” The Mirror quoted Zola, as saying.

“Arsenal, along with Barcelona, are the team who are playing the best football in Europe probably. They are very good to watch. Whether they are going to be able to do that until the end I don’t know. That is the question that everybody is asking,” he added.

He further said that his team did provide tough competition to Arsenal despite the 2-0 defeat in the Premier League tie.

“Arsenal played some good football, but there were some moments when we matched them completely,” he added.

Zola also believes that battle for the Premier League title will be a long one, and leaders Manchester United will have to fight it out with Arsenal and Chelsea.

“They will be in contention until the end that is for sure,” Zola added. (ANI)

Giant pair of pliers spotted flying over West Bromwich on Google Street View!

London, March 19 (ANI): A British man has spotted an enormous pair of pliers flying over a West Bromwich residential street – on Google Street View.

The strange discovery was made by David Muir, who decided to look up his road when the Internet site went live this week.

The website offers a detailed view of every street in the country, using images captured by a special 360 degree camera mounted on top of a car.

However, Muir found a rather unusual aspect to Whitehall Road when he logged on to Google Street View.

He saw what appears to be a giant pair of pliers about to strike a chimney of one of the homes in the terraced street.

The oddity appears to be down to a mistake by a Google technician who was making adjustments to the car-mounted camera at the junction of Whitehall Road and Compton Road.

The camera snapped the pliers and they ended up on the site.

“It is a curious picture to say the least,” the Telegraph quoted Muir as saying.

“I have been emailing it to friends and telling them to look upwards. It has caused a lot of amusement around here,” Muir added.

Google has since altered the image on its website. (ANI)

Frank Lampard and Christine Bleakley go public with their romance

London, Mar 10 (ANI): After playing coy for months, Frank Lampard and Christine Bleakley have finally come out in the open with their romance.

The couple has dated for six months but refused to be openly pictured together, until now.

Even last week Chelsea ace Frank, 31, hid behind his scarf as photographers spotted them at London’s Dorchester Hotel.

But finally he gave in to the pressure from the telly presenter, 31, to prove his love.

And on Tuesday, the pair posed for fans gathered outside BBC Radio 1’s studios in west London.

Frank joined the ‘One Show’ star while she promoted her Sport Relief challenge on Chris Moyles’ radio show – she plans to waterski the English Channel.

Later, the footballer took her for breakfast.

“Christine was getting increasingly agitated. They’ve been together ages but hadn’t gone properly public,” the Daily star quoted a source as saying.

“It didn’t help when Frank said he was a single man in a recent interview. She told him they should not be ashamed of their romance and Frank agreed,” he added. (ANI)

Jealous NRI guilty of curry murder

LONDON: In a case that’s shaken Britain and brought a degree of shame to the Indian community, Lakhvir Singh, a 45-year-old Indian-origin mother of three, may soon be sentenced to life imprisonment.

On Wednesday afternoon, following four days of deliberations by a jury at the end of an emotional trial at the Old Bailey, Britain’s central criminal court since 1673, Singh was found guilty of murdering her lover and causing bodily harm to his fiancee by poisoning their curry with a deadly substance called aconite.

Not since 1882, has there been any record in the United Kingdom of anyone using this queen of poisons. Singh, a married woman who had had a 16-year affair with Lakhvinder Lucky Cheema, 39, killed him out of jealousy after he decided to marry Gurjeet Choongh, 21, allegedly an illegal immigrant.

On 27 January 2009, Cheema and Choongh were taken seriously ill after consuming curry leftover in the refrigerator of their west London home. Cheema called for an ambulance and complained: “Someone put poison in our food … she is my ex-girlfriend.” CCTV footage, though, showed the couple was rushed by relatives in a black car to hospital, where the former died within an hour. His wife-to-be was in coma for two days before doctors with the help of experts at the botanical gar-dens — traced the toxin and gave her an antidote.

Choongh said in her evidence: “Lucky ate more than I. After that, he had second helpings. Lucky said to me: ‘I am not feeling very well. My face has become numb and when I touch it, I cannot feel it.”

A few weeks before her lethal act, Singh visited India, where she procured the poison. Police found traces of the poison among herbs in Singh’s coat pocket and in her handbag.

Singh, whose husband was suffering from cancer, blamed her brother-in-law for the murder. But the court heard an eyewitness, who had seen her take a container out of the fridge. This was her second attempt to kill her lover after she had failed a month earlier.

Lily Allen to make stage debut in West End play

London, September 14 (ANI): Lily Allen has decided to take a break from her singing career and make her stage debut in a new West End play.

The 24-year-old confessed she has had enough of music for the time being as she recently wrapped up the festival season at Bestival.

“I’m not going to record and tour again for quite a while. I finish up my gig dates in March and I’ll be ready to do something else,” the Sun quoted her as saying.
