Adebayor lifts lid on his abusive treatment by Arsenal

London, Sep 18 (ANI): Emmanuel Adebayor has criticized Arsenal after getting a three-match ban for his stamp on striker Robin van Persie.

“There is only so much abuse a man can take until he reaches breaking point,” Adebayor said.

Adebayor lifted the lid on his treatment by the Gunners and their fans that led to his outrageous behaviour in Saturday’s 4-2 win, and insisted: “Arsenal players refused to shake his hand before the game.”

He suffered 60 minutes of non-stop abuse from away fans before he turned the tables on them with his goal, The Sun reports.

Arsene Wenger completed his 25 million pounds summer move from Arsenal behind his back.

Adebayor, banned for Sunday’s Manchester derby, said: “I could not understand some of the Arsenal players being disrespectful towards me.”

“I was being abused by people who six months ago were singing my name. The abuse was for no reason. It wasn’t my fault I left, it was Arsene who wanted to accept the offer for me,” he added. (ANI)

Adebayor ready to take on his brothers at Arsenal

London, Sep 2 (ANI): Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor has said that it will be like a family at war when he lines up against his former team Arsenal in 10 days’ time.

The Togo striker has started his City career in impressive fashion, scoring three league goals in as many games since arriving from the Gunners in a 25 million pounds deal.

It has put big-spending City in the top four already and they now face a huge match with the Gunners a week on Saturday, The Sun reports.

Adebayor still refers to his former Arsenal teammates Emmanuel Eboue, Gael Clichy and Alex Song as his brothers.

But there will be no love lost when they go head-to-head at Eastlands as City looks to continue their impressive start to the season.

“I don’t think I have anything that I need to show Arsenal. We all know how good they are – but now I play for City so I’ll do everything to help this team now,” he said.

“It’ll be a good game and will be funny as well playing against players who I see like brothers – such as Song, Clichy and Eboue. Playing against them will be strange – but it is going to be good.

“I’m looking forward to it because I’m going to be up against old teammates, ones who made me into a better player,” he added.

Adebayor, 25, admits he owes Arsenal for giving him his chance in English football, although that will not stop him looking to shoot them down.

“Those people believed in my quality when I first came to this country. To play against that club is going to be very special for me. To play against Arsene Wenger will be something special,” he said.

Adebayor has already become a cult figure among City fans and says their support is driving him on to greater things.

That is in stark contrast to his relationship with the Emirates faithful, which resulted in an angry outburst when he opted for a switch to City in July. (ANI)

Man U’s anti-football tactics hurting the game: Wenger

London, Aug 31 (ANI): Manchester United has been accused of employing “anti-football” tactics during their 2-1 victory at Old Trafford by Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, who has reopened the hostilities between the two clubs in the new season.

Wenger is to receive an official apology for being banished from the dugout but he remains incensed by the standard of refereeing and his conviction that Sir Alex Ferguson’s players, predominantly Darren Fletcher, were guilty of systematic fouling.

The Old Trafford match in which Arsenal had six players booked, triggered an automatic 25,000 pounds fine from the Football Association, The Guardian reported.

The conduct of Arsenal players was also brought into question by Emmanuel Eboué being shown a yellow card for diving, a day after Eduardo da Silva had been charged by UEFA for “deceiving the referee” for a similar offence.

“There are other points than diving that, for me, are more urgent players who play only to make fouls and who are never punished; players who make repeated fouls and who get out of the game without a yellow card. That, for me, is more anti-football than a player who did what Eduardo did.”

Wenger also accused Ferguson’s players of using similar tactics in the past, most notably saying his team had been kicked off the pitch at Old Trafford during the 2004-05 season. (ANI)

Wenger to get Man U dug out sending off apology

London, Aug 31 (ANI): Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger will receive an apology today from referees chief Keith Hackett over his dismissal during the Gunners’ 2-1 loss to Manchester United.

The Arsenal boss was forced to stand among Manchester United fans for the final 30 seconds after fourth official Lee Probert complained that he had kicked a water bottle.

Wenger was sent to the stands by referee Mike Dean in the dying moments of Saturday’s match at Old Trafford. Probert moaned to referee Mike Dean and he sent Wenger off to the delight of 75,000 United supporters.

League Managers Association chief Richard Bevan has been told by Hackett that Wenger will receive an apology.

Referees’ chief Keith Hackett admitted last night that Dean and Probert had goofed outrageously and promised furious League Managers’ Association chief Richard Bevan an apology was on its way.

“Although correct in law, it was completely out of context in the game and it was followed by the nonsense over where Wenger should sit,” The Sun quoted Bevan, as saying.

“I’ve spoken to Keith Hackett and he fully recognises the situation was an error and an apology will follow to Wenger. Lee Probert totally failed to manage the situation,” he added.enger, angry after Robin van Persie’s late effort was ruled offside, said: “It was weird, spectacular. I didn’t even know where to go.” (ANI)

“This is Man U’s Thierry Henry moment,” says Wenger

London, Aug 29(ANI): Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has said that in the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo, Manchester United are facing the same trauma as Arsenal did, when Thierry Henry left the club in 2007.

“Thierry was, in the end, a personality that had a big weight in the team. Also no one could refuse to give him the ball so when he left our play sometimes became a bit more diversified,” The Sun quoted Wenger, as saying.

“United have some big personalities in the team. But, Ronaldo won Player of the Year and European Player of the Year so suddenly they have a lack of charisma around them and everybody will look at their team differently. Yes, you could say this is their Thierry Henry moment,” he added.

Wenger reckons that the Red Devils are in a weak situation and will take time to adjust with Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov after Ronaldo left the club following a world record 80 million pound switch to Real Madrid in the summer.

“Ronaldo didn’t look as convincing as the year before. Though when you look at the numbers of games he played and the number of goals he scored he was still as efficient as before,” Wenger said.

“I believe they will miss him. When a player becomes too strong in a team, others are a little bit isolated or forgotten. So, when he disappears many of the players turn up because of the way the game goes through different players,” he added. (ANI)

Wenger dubs game against Celtic more ‘massive’ than fixture against Man U

London, Aug 26 (ANI):Arsene Wenger has called Arsenal’s upcoming European battle against Celtic a bigger game than the upcoming match with Manchester United.

Although, Arsenal hold a 2-0 aggregate lead in their Champions League play-off, the Frenchman has no plans to take it easy.

The Sun quoted Wenger as saying: “This game is a more important one than Saturday for the club, by far. We have to give absolutely everything be- cause tomorrow you cannot come back.

“Saturday, even if we drop points against Manchester United, we can always catch them up – you have 35 games still to go.

“If we lose the game against Celtic, we have zero. It is a massive game.”

Arsenal could bag around 25- million pounds even they only play the Champions League group stages.

But Boss said it was not just about money.

Wenger said: “It’s not the huge amount money that makes it such a huge fixture for us.

“It’s not the financial blow that matters, it’s that we want to be in the Champions League and this is a much bigger game for us than Saturday.”

After romping home in their first-leg victory in Glasgow, Arsenal are huge favourites to make it through.

However, Wenger believes there is not time to rest.

He insisted: “It is not job done, it is job to do. That is how I approach it.

“Celtic have no choice, they have to come out and have a go at us. We will be faithful to our tactical approach.” (ANI)

Transfer claims by Spanish clubs are damaging football: Wenger

London, Aug.22 (ANI): Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has said that outrageous transfer claims by Spanish clubs are damaging football.

A power struggle at Barcelona between president Joan Laporta and his former No 2 Sandro Rosell has seen both men targeting Gunners midfield star Cesc Fabregas.

Asked about how much worth there was in these claims, The Sun quoted Wenger, as saying: “Apart from giving articles to newspapers, all the rest is rubbish. It doesn’t help football; it doesn’t help people to focus on their job. Sometimes it is quite destabilising.”

“The way that Spanish clubs are run is more political than sport orientated. How much does that harm other clubs? It’s difficult to measure, but it doesn’t help other clubs,” he added. (ANI)

Adebayor can leave the Gunners if he wants to says Wenger

London, July 4 (ANI): Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has assured that he wont stand in star striker Emmanuel Adebayor’s way if he wants to quit the Gunners.

Wenger also revealed that if Adebayor leaves Arsenal, he has a back up in the form of Marouane Chamakh, who currently plays for the French club, Bordeaux.

“If Adebayor does not want to stay, he will leave – although I think he will be still at Arsenal for this season,” The Sun quoted Wenger, as saying.

Earlier, AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani had revealed that he had talked to Arsenal about the possibility of signing Adebayor and, it appeared that the Serie A side had stepped up their interest for the Togo international.

Wenger, however, made it clear that Chamakh would only be signed in the event of a departure.

Wenger has been an open admirer of Chamakh’s talents. He has been on Arsenal’s radar ever since he exploded on the scene in France.

The French-Moroccan star has all the qualities that Wenger likes in his striker, 6ft 2in tall, strong in the air, good close control and a tireless worker. (ANI)

Wenger reveals why he snubbed Real Madrid offer

London, July 1 (ANI): Arsene Wenger revealed for the first time why he rejected the chance to leave Arsenal for Real Madrid.

The Gunners chief urged the world of football to avoid making “moral judgements” about the Bernabeu side, after admitting he was sorely tempted by the offer from incoming Real Madrid president Florentino Perez in May.

Wenger wanted reassurance from the Emirates board that there was unanimous support for his ideas of building a young squad and turning them into genuine challengers both domestically and in Europe, rather than simply trying to buy success.

Perez offered Wenger £6million a year in addition to the seemingly limitless transfer war chest that has subsequently landed Brazilian ace Kaka – unveiled yesterday – and Cristiano Ronaldo for a combined 136 million pounds.

Wenger was convinced during a three-hour summit meeting with chief executive Ivan Gazidis that he should not end his 13-year stay in North London, The Mirror reports.

He explained one of the main reasons for his decision was that he simply does not agree with the Perez philosophy.

“What Real want to do is produce what I would call a spectacle of football, a spectacular team. But I believe that when it comes to creating a team and a squad there is another dimension that exists, and that is my way of thinking,” said the Frenchman.

“I want to have success by building a team with a style, with a know-how, with a culture of play specific to the club and its fans and with young people. That is what I have chosen in my career and want to ensure I continue here at Arsenal.

“I am in a construction project with a young team, but my intention is to take that project to the ultimate end. For me, pleasure comes from watching those players showing the football I like to see played,” he said.

“I believe it is necessary to disregard moral judgement and to simply ask whether the operation will be profitable. In my opinion, to recruit more than three players in a transfer window, as Real plan, is taking a technical risk,” Wenger added. (ANI)

Arsenal may be ready to offload Ivory Coast striker Eboue

London, May 30 (ANI): Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is reported to be ready to off-load Ivory Coast striker Emmanuel Eboue as part of a major shake-up of his squad this summer.

Wenger is also preparing to sell off unsettled striker Emmanuel Adebayor.

According to The Mirror, two Italian clubs — AC Milan and Juventus are both interested in signing former captain William Gallas.

Atletico Madrid are said to be interested in taking Eboue away from the Emirates.

Ac Milan also want Adebayor while Gallas, 32 in August, may be allowed to go as he only has one year left on his contract and was stripped of the captaincy last season.

Wenger is desperate to strengthen his Gunners squad with a centre forward after yet another season without any silverware.

Arsenal have made an enquiry about Bordeaux striker Marouane Chamakh, while they also want a midfielder and a centre half.

Fulham defender Brede Hangeland is top of their wanted list while Rennes midfielder Stephane Mbia and Wolfsburg defensive midfielder Christian Genter have been watched. (ANI)

Henry may return to Arsenal, says Wenger

London, May 24 (ANI): Star footballer Thierry Henry may don Arsenal’s jersey once again after his contract ends with Barcelona.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger dropped the bombshell about Henry’s return to his former club, days before his former talisman prepares for Wednesday’s Champions League final against Manchester United.

Wegner said Henry still loves Arsenal so much that he continues to watch all Gunners games, including the reserves.

When asked about the possibility of Henry’s return, he said: “Of course, I hope for the club to have people of his quality.”

Although he accepted the fact that Henry may not remain the same tactful mover on the pitch after his return as he would have turned 35 then.

“It would be difficult as a player because in 2010 he will be 33 and I think he still has one or two years to go on his contract at Barcelona. But he has a very strong link with this club and was a massive influence here,” The Sunday Express quoted Wenger, as saying.

Meanwhile, Stoke City’s boss Tony Pulis said the he considers it ‘ridiculous’ that Wenger is getting stick from Arsenal fans. The very thought that Wenger is even being questioned is bizarre,” Pulis said. (ANI)

‘Wenger is staying at Arsenal’

London, May 22 (ANI): Arsenal’s chief executive Ivan Gazidis has said that coach Arsene Wenger will not quit and has the full support of the club’s board.

Gunners boss Wenger has been linked with a move to Real Madrid after getting flak from fans following a fourth season without silverware.

Gazidis insisted: “He is clearly staying. We’ve said that, he said that. He has the full, unequivocal support of our board.”

The chief executive expects Wenger to see out the remaining two seasons of his contract and stay beyond that, The Sun reports.

“We’ve consistently said we would like him to remain involved with the club as long as he has the drive and the ambition to want to do that,” he said.

Wenger has been with Arsenal for nearly 13 years, but sparked speculation at the weekend by saying that coaching Real Madrid would be “obviously interesting.”

Gazidis admitted: “It does not surprise me clubs like Real Madrid would be interested in Arsene. He would be the most in-demand manager in the game internationally.”

Some shareholders rapped Wenger, 59, last week about Arsenal’s trophy drought and his failure to buy experienced players.

But Gazidis said he believes the Frenchman has the clear support “of the majority of our fans.” (ANI)

Wenger says he is not going to leave Arsenal

London, May 20 (ANI): Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has given the clearest indication yet that he intends to stay on as manager of the club.

A day after he met chief executive Ivan Gazidis for talks, the Arsenal manager said: “I’m staying here.”

Wenger was quick to reassure fans, who have organised petitions to keep him at the club, saying: “There is nothing to worry about. It is not an issue for me.”

The Gunners are determined to keep the most successful manager in their history – whose contract has two years left – while Perez had indicated he wanted a firm decision from Wenger by the end of the week.

Wenger has never walked out on a contract and now looks certain to stay on for two more years, the Daily Express reported.

His future had come under scrutiny like never before after his weekend comments that working with Perez would be an interesting project alongside his dismay over criticisms made at a shareholders’ meeting.

Wenger has built a promising young side and reached the Champions League again but has been unable to compete financially with the rest of the Big Four and even some other Premier League clubs.

Wenger has been frustrated at that, and would probably need triple the reported 13 million pound summer transfer fund some of which will go on Theo Walcott’s new contract as well as Robin van Persie’s proposed deal.

He wants experienced players, but needs more money, especially if striker Emmanuel Adebayor goes to either of the Milan clubs or to Chelsea. (ANI)

Wenger refuses to rule out switch to Real Madrid

London, May 18 (ANI): Arsenal’s coach Arsene Wenger has refused to rule out a summer switch to Spanish football giant Real Madrid.

The Gunners’ long-serving boss was coy when asked on French TV whether he had spoken to Madrid presidential candidate Florentino Perez.

Far from denying it, Wenger just said: “Please allow me to remain discreet on this matter.”

Perez is the overwhelming favourite to win next month’s presidential election at the Bernabeu.

“With Perez, the project will be greatly interesting for all the managers,” The Sun quoted Wenger, as saying.

Frenchman Wenger took over at Arsenal in September 1996 and has never walked out on a club before the end of his contract.

But this time, he would only say: “In general, I always go to the end of my contract.”

The report also claimed Wenger held a meeting with Perez in a hotel in Paris last Tuesday. But after the goalless draw with Manchester United on Saturday, Wenger insisted he was looking forward to challenging the Red Devils for the title next season.

Wenger has already told United boss Alex Ferguson: “We’ll be fighting you for the title next season.” (ANI)

Wenger feels like he has killed someone

London, May 16 (ANI): Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger feels that the amount of criticism he has copped in the recent past, makes him feel like he has killed someone!

“When you look now at people assessing the situation, it has just become ridiculous. Every year, every day you feel like you killed somebody. It is unbelievable. If you do not distance yourself from it you think, ‘What kind of world are we living in?’

“We lose to Manchester United, who have 10 times more resources than us. But they are the best in the world. If you play tennis and you lose against Rafa Nadal, you can still say you are a good player. The way we have gone is to rely on a young team which goes to the semi-finals of the Champions League and the FA Cup,” The Sun quoted Wenger, as saying.

“This club is in a fantastic situation. Look at its shape, it’s financial situation and the quality of the squad – I’m pretty envious if I am outside of this club. What we have achieved in the past six months is amazing. For me, this is one of the best seasons considering where we were in November,” he added. (ANI)

Wenger’s Young Guns’ issue a war cry

London, May 5 (ANI): Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes the hour is approaching when the Gunners will confirm what he has been telling all along, that his young team will dominate European football for years to come.
Wenger is in no doubt his kids can overturn the 1-0 deficit from the semi-final first leg at Manchester United.

He has the silverware in his sights, whatever the bookies might think. The boss acknowledges Arsenal were fortunate to concede only a single goal at Old Trafford but claims they will make United pay for failing to kill the tie off – even though it is eight years since the Gunners last beat them by two clear goals.
“I’m very confident the team will produce a magnificent performance. We play at home, where we have a strong record in the Champions League. For many people we are super-outsiders but I personally believe we will do it,” The Sun quoted Wenger, as saying.
“If I had said in November that we will be in the semi-finals of the Champions League and FA Cup and go 21 games unbeaten – as we have in the Premier League – you’d have called an ambulance,” he added.
“I feel very proud of this team because they have been through difficult periods and shown great mental strength. And they have faced much more adversity than all the other teams I have had here. The progress this team has made since the start of the season has been remarkable,” he said.
Should Arsenal beat United, they could set up a final against Thierry Henry’s Barcelona – the team that beat them 2-1 in 2006. (ANI)

Man U’s clash against Arsenal their biggest ever game: Ferguson

London, May 5 (ANI): Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson insists that tonight’s clash with Arsene Wenger will be their biggest ever game after 13 years of dual between the two managers.

This will be the 39th time the two managers have met in all competitions with the record level at 14 wins each and 10 draws.

There have been some fierce, controversial and dramatic encounters down the years in league and cup. But a place in the Champions League final beckons tonight – and that means more to both than anything else.

“There is no question the clashes we have had in the past with Arsenal will not reach the proportion of this,” The Sun quoted Ferguson, as saying.

United lead the semi-final tie 1-0 after the first leg at Old Trafford and they are aiming to become the first club to successfully defend the trophy.

“It is strange that no one has defended the trophy. It is a challenge. We are in a good place going into the game. We have a lead and we are only one kick away from Rome. It is a big incentive for us,” he added.

“I think we will need to score and we have that goal threat about us which is a big bonus. We have the ability to score and if we did it would put us in a very strong position. But I am expecting a very close game. You cannot call it.

“They are two terrific sides and it should be quite an engrossing game. I don’t think anybody is going to be disappointed with this match,” Ferguson said.

This will be Ferguson’s sixth semi-final having been successful in only two. (ANI)

Man U’s Giggs warns Arsenal’s Wenger ahead of crunch semi-final

London, May 4 (ANI): Manchester United’s record setting football great Ryan Giggs has warned Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger that his team is ready to turn the screw on against the Gunners in their Champions League crunch tomorrow.

United warmed up for their semi-final second-leg clash against Arsenal with an easy win at Middlesbrough on Saturday.

And wing ace Giggs, 35, said: “We’ve got our noses in front for Tuesday, but Arsenal are a quality side.

“They create chances but we hope that we’ll create chances, too. We will try and score and make it difficult for them. In the end it was quite straightforward at Boro and that was ideal for us with a massive game coming up. It has set us up nicely. We wanted the momentum we currently have to carry on into the Arsenal game and that’s what we’ve got,” The Sun quoted him, as saying.

“A professional performance, a clean sheet, two goals and now we go into Tuesday full of confidence,” he added. (ANI)

Wenger’s reputation dependent on Champions League gong success, says ex-Arsenal star

London, May 4 (ANI): Former Arsenal favourite Kanu is of the view that coach Arsene Wenger’s whole managerial reputation rests on whether he can guide his team to Champions League success this season.

The pressure is firmly on Wenger to beat Manchester United in tomorrow night’s semi-final return, and then go on to overcome either Chelsea or Barcelona in the final.

Kanu, who served under Wenger at Arsenal for four and a half years, is the proud owner of a Champions League winners’ medal from his days with Ajax.

Portsmouth veteran Kanu believes the Gunners can overturn the 1-0 deficit they suffered in the first leg at Old Trafford, but will have to be at their very best to achieve their goal.

“There is pressure on Arsene Wenger to win it this time, because I feel this is the best chance he has of doing it. He needs to win it and if he doesn’t, it is going to be difficult for him,” the Daily Express quoted Kanu, as saying.

“Whatever he might say, inside his mind, Wenger will want to win it. He has won the League and the FA Cup, and the Champions League is the ultimate. When you are in the Champions League you are playing against other countries, so if you win that, it is when you can say you are a great coach.

He has won the trophies here, so now he has to win the Champions League,” he added. (ANI)

Chelsea’s game is boring and fans are ghosts: Arsenal goalie

London, May 2 (ANI): Arsenal keeper Manuel Almunia launched a bitter attack on Champions League rivals Chelsea last night, branding their game as ‘boring’ and Blues fans as ‘ghosts’.

He also made it clear he would rather play Chelsea in the Euro final in Rome on May 27, as they would be much easier to beat than Barcelona.

“In the final I would want Chelsea. They are more predictable, whereas Barcelona has greater resources. We know what Chelsea is like. We have them measured. They wouldn’t surprise us,” The Sun quoted Almunia, as saying.

“Our semi-final, first leg with Manchester United was much better than Chelsea’s against Barcelona. Chelsea just went to Spain to defend and it made for a boring game. They showed that all they wanted was a 0-0 result.

“Our manager Arsene Wenger doesn’t know how to put a team together that isn’t going for a win. United wanted to seal the game at home but didn’t manage it and our morale is high. We have a great home record this season and I know we can get through to the final,” Almunia said.

Commenting on Chelsea fans, Almunia added: “They say their fans are ghosts. You don’t see or hear them. A lot of people travel with English teams and it surprised me that not many Chelsea supporters went to Spain for their tie with Barcelona.”

Almunia was the star of the show at Old Trafford in midweek, even though the Gunners ended up being beaten 1-0.

His heroics have given Wenger’s men the opportunity to do the business at home in the return on Tuesday and reach the final showdown in the Italian capital. (ANI)
