Senator’s concern may complicate Wall Street bill vote

(Reuters) – President Barack Obama’s efforts to win final approval of a historic financial regulatory reform bill looked more complicated on Saturday after a Republican senator threatened to oppose it.

Politics

“I was surprised and extremely disappointed to hear that $18 billion in new assessments and fees were added in the wee hours of the morning by the conference committee,” Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown said.

He issued the statement after negotiators from the Senate and House of Representatives emerged from a marathon session early Friday morning with a final compromise on a bill that would bring about the most sweeping financial rules revamp since the 1930s.

The legislation would set up a new financial consumer watchdog, create a protocol for dismantling troubled financial firms and mandate higher bank capital standards — all in an effort to avoid a repeat of the 2007-2009 credit crisis that hammered the economy and triggered taxpayer bailouts of floundering firms.

In May Brown was only one of four Republicans who voted for the Senate’s financial regulatory reform package, which was approved, 59-39, with two members not voting.

Before that vote, Democrats had to overcome a Republican filibuster aimed at killing the bill and did that by the narrowest margin possible, 60-40.

Brown’s possible defection from the bill increases the chance of a successful Republican filibuster this time unless Democratic leaders can find another vote.

Democrats control 57 seats in the Senate and Republicans 41. Two independents usually vote with the Democrats. It takes 60 votes to end a filibuster.

“While I’m still reviewing the bill’s details, these provisions were not in the Senate version of the bill which I previously supported … I’ve said repeatedly that I cannot support any bill that raises tax,” Brown said.

A spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Henry Reid had no comment on Saturday when asked if Brown’s concerns posed a serious obstacle to final passage of the bill.

The three other Republicans that voted for the financial regulatory reform package in May were Senator Susan Collins and Senator Olympia Snowe, both of Maine, and Senator Charles Grassley of Iowa.

A spokeswoman for Grassley said he was still evaluating the conference report.

Two Democrats, Russ Feingold of Wisconsin and Maria Cantwell of Washington, voted against the Senate financial regulatory reform package in May.

Two other Democrats, Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia and Senator Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, did not cast a vote on the bill.

Jonathan Rhys Meyers uses N-word against airline staff: Report

Washington, May 18 (ANI): Actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers was banned from boarding a United Airlines flight after he used racial slurs against an employee last month in a drunken outburst.

As per reports from RadarOnline.com, the Irish actor, star “The Tudors,” reportedly used the “N” word when he was reprimanded for drunk and disorderly conduct inside a first class lounge earlier this month, says Fox News.

Meyers was accused of drinking excessively in the wee hours at New York City’s JFK airport while waiting to board a flight to Los Angeles.

The employees didn’t allow him to get on the flight on seeing his quarrelsome behaviour, following which shouted the ‘N word’ at them.

This is not the first time Meyers has landed in trouble.

After his second stint in rehab, Meyers was arrested in 2007 at a Dublin airport for allegedly being drunk, but the charges were dropped later.

Two years later, just three months out of his third stint, he was arrested for allegedly attacking staff in a Paris airport bar. (ANI)

Lib-Dems behaving like every harlot in history says David Blunkett

London, May 11 (ANI): In yet another twist in the post-election frenzy former British home secretary, sharp-tongued David Blunkett has likened the Lib-Dems to a harlot, apropos to the hemming and hawing on the part of the Lib-Dems in forming an alliance that will decide which party comes to power.

“Can we trust the Liberal Democrats?” Mr Blunkett asked in an interview with the BBC, “Theyre behaving like every harlot in history.”

The Lib-Dems vacillation has had senior members of both Labour and Tory fuming.

Both the Labour Party as well as the Tory Party have been wooing the Lib-Dems with Gordon Brown even offering to step down as Prime Minister.

Thus far Cleggs negotiators have displayed an their inclination toward the Tories, Blunkett pointed this out in an interview with the BBC, he believes that the Conservatives are more likely to come to power and advised his partys top-brass to gracefully accept their position as the Opposition rather than hastily cobble together an impractical coalition.

“I dont think it will bring stability, I think it will lead to a lack of legitimacy and I think it will make people think that we havent listened to them,” he told the BBC.

The Lib-Dems convened for an exhaustive meeting at the House of Commons yesterday, they were there till the wee hours.

“We are keen to settle things as soon as we can. I am as anxious as anyone else,” The Telegraph quoted Nick Clegg as saying.

Negotiator David Laws described the meeting as “good and extensive” and said MPs and peers would gather again today. The next 24 hours are crucial for all three parties as a new coalition is likely to emerge within this time-frame.

Meanwhile, Conservative Party members launched a broadside against Brown, with Lord Heseltine, another former Tory Cabinet minister, claiming Mr Browns attempted deal with the Lib Dems was party politics at its most sordid.

A Lib Dem-Lab tie-up is highly unfeasible in terms of sustainability of numbers, the formation of a new coalition at the earliest is now imperative since the British markets have been facing a lean period as a result of the power vacuum.

Investors are hoping for a Lib Dem-Tory pact over a Lib Dem-Lab one because both parties are less ambitious about tackling the deficit than the Tories.

“Markets are quite nervous and look as though they will continue falling unless theres a resolution that leads to someone who is going to address that problem,” Terry Smith, chief executive of broker Tullet Prebon told the paper. (ANI)

Filipino inmates in `Thriller’ video stage tribute

CEBU, Philippines – The Filipino inmates who shot to global fame with a YouTube video of their “Thriller” dance swayed and stomped again Saturday in a behind-bars tribute to their idol, Michael Jackson.

After being told of Jackson’s death Thursday in Los Angeles, the 1,500 inmates at the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center hit the exercise yard, practicing for nine hours Friday night — and into the wee hours of Saturday morning — for the show. They took breaks only to eat or when it rained, said professional choreographer Gwendolyn Lador, hired by the prison to teach the inmates the dance.

“I felt sad because we lost our idol,” said inmate Wenjiel Resane, who plays the role of Jackson’s girlfriend in the video.

Crisanto Nieri, 38, was feeling a little extra stress. He danced Jackson’s part in “Thriller.”

“Even as a kid, he was already my idol,” said Nieri, who is serving seven years on drug charges. “I am happy that our video became famous, but I feel some pressure to perform well.”

A crowd of 700 Cebuanos and foreign tourists watched the performance from a second-floor corridor, swaying to the music and applauding as the inmates, dressed in orange prison T-shirts and sweat pants, stomped and clapped in unison in the hilltop prison, behind thick stone walls topped by electrified razor wire.

Other numbers included “Ben,” “I’ll Be There” and “We Are the World.” The inmates then held up a 5-by-10 foot (1.5-by-3 meter) tarpaulin showing Michael Jackson holding a sword with his name written below it.

Others waved the flags of the Philippines and other nations.

Before the show, the performers dedicated a prayer to Jackson’s family.

“I was sad because one of the songs of Michael Jackson, `Thriller,’ made us famous around the world,” said Francis Mercader, 36, who has spent a year in detention while on trial for drug charges.

Byron Garcia, the Cebu provincial security consultant who came up with the idea of adding synchronized dancing to poorly attended exercise sessions, said he was surprised by the popularity of the 2007 video — one of more than a dozen inmate dance numbers he has posted on YouTube.

“Thriller” has attracted 24.3 million hits since it was posted two years ago, with nearly a million of them in the 24 hours since news of Jackson’s death spread.

The inmates “consider Michael Jackson as a god here,” Garcia said. “If not for Michael Jackson, they would not have this international recognition.”

“The fame brought them back their self-esteem,” he told reporters. “So that’s why we have these public performances.”

Inmate Alfredo Gaballo, 52, says Jackson “inspired us, so we are all sad about his death.”

“The performance today has been amazing,” said Karen Benrad, 29, from London. She and about two dozen foreign and local tourists later joined the inmates at the prison quadrangle, dancing to the tune of “Macarena” and “I just can’t get enough.”

Kim Hua-sung, a 23-year-old South Korean student in Cebu who watched the inmates’ performance, said he is also a Jackson fan. “I’m sad that I can’t listen to more songs from him.”

In Taiwan, two top Michael Jackson impersonators donned fedora hats and sequined outfits Saturday, moonwalking to “Billie Jean” in their own tribute to the pop star.

Thirty-year-old Wang Chih-wei told The Associated Press he secured a photo op with his idol during Jackson’s whirlwind tour in 1993 after winning an impersonation contest.

“I didn’t know much English so I could only tell him, ‘I love you,’” Wang said. “He was very friendly. I melted when he put his hand on my shoulder for the photo.”

Poor sleep increases risk of death

WASHINGTON: Do you stay awake till the wee hours of the night? Are you a poor sleeper? Then you may be at increased risk of death.

According to the latest research it is both quality and quantity that is important for maintaining health.

Results suggest that over the average follow-up of eight years, 854 of the 5,614 participants died. Two sleep-stage transition types were associated with higher mortality risk: wake-to-non-REM and non-REM-to-wake.

According to Alison Laffan, lead author, from the California Pacific Medical Centre, “mounting evidence from a number of studies shows that poor sleep increases risk for adverse health outcomes.”

“In light of this growing body of evidence, people should strive to maintain good sleep habits, such as going to bed and getting up at the same time each day and sleeping for seven to eight hours each night,” said Laffan.

The study involved 5,614 Sleep Heart Health Study participants. Health outcomes were watched carefully for the following eight years.

Findings of this study were presented at SLEEP 2009, the 23rd Annual Meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies.
