Emma Watson used gap year to design teen summer wear for People Tree

London, Sep 18 (ANI): Harry Potter star Emma Watson has revealed that she spent her gap year designing a ‘complete teenage summer wardrobe’ for the fair trade fashion brand People Tree.

Watson, 19, who has just enrolled at Brown University in the US, acted as a creative advisor for the ethical fashion collection, which will reach shops in February.

“I wanted to help People Tree produce a younger range because I was excited by the idea of using fashion as a tool to help alleviate poverty and knew it was something I could help make a difference with,” Sky News quoted her as saying.

“I think young people like me are becoming increasingly aware of the humanitarian and environmental issues surrounding fast fashion and want to make good choices but there aren’t many options out there.

“It has been the most incredible gap year project,” she added.

Among items that the teen actress has had a hand in designing were knitwear, cotton t-shirts, jersey dresses, and poplin shorts.

Her range also includes some more bizarre items, including “bohemian hand embroidered bed throws, recycled sweetie wrapper jewellery, banana fibre slouchy beanies and head scarves.”

They will be sold by People Tree, a company which aims at supporting developing countries and promoting environmental projects. (ANI)

Fashion may have emerged 80,000 years ago in form of shell beads

London, August 28 (ANI): A new study by an international team of researchers from France, South Africa, Germany, Israel and the UK has confirmed that 80,000-year-old shell beads found in caves in North Africa represent some of the earliest evidence of the use of personal ornamentation, which also points to the dawn of modern human behaviour.

According to a report carried out by the Planet Earth Online, the beads provide evidence that the people alive at the time were acting much like modern humans.

“There is a problem with linking anatomically modern humans with behaviourally modern humans,” said Professor Nick Barton of the University of Oxford UK, and one of the authors of the study. “These people may have looked like us, but were they behaving the same?” he added.

The presence of the beads suggests the people who made and wore them behaved in ways we would recognize.

Using symbolic items like shell beads to communicate ideas about the wearer requires skills found only in modern humans, including a well-developed language and the ability to use abstract concepts.

The researchers analyzed 25 beads from four sites in North Africa from the Middle Palaeolithic period.

The beads, consisting of the shells of sea snails called Nassarius, had been transported some distance from the marine environment in which they’re usually found, and showed evidence of deliberate alterations.

“We found evidence they had been strung together as in a necklace or bracelet,” said Barton.

The shells had been deliberately perforated using stone tools and the researchers found distinctive wear patterns which suggested they had been rubbing together.

Wear marks around the perforations indicated the shells had been threaded on a string.

Several had also been covered with a pigment called red ochre and one shell showed evidence of heating, possibly to alter its colour.

As to what purpose the coloured beads served, Barton said, “What they were signalling, we’re not entirely sure. Possibly, they were an insurance policy, if you had shared access to certain resources and wanted to identify yourself to members of another group.”

The beads may also have let wearers identify members of the same social group, preventing unnecessary conflicts.

Alternatively, the beads might have provided personal information about the wearer, such as the wearer’s position in the social hierarchy, or that they had passed through puberty and into adulthood.

These beads might have also represented the origins of today’s fashions. (ANI)

Hominids’ last supper establishes the times they lived at archaeological sites

Washington, July 15 (ANI): An international team of scientists has analyzed the last food that the hominids consumed, in order to establish the length of their occupations at archaeological sites.

As part of the research, the scientists analyzed the dental wear of the fossils of herbivorous animals found in the French cave of Arago, which were hunted by Homo heidelbergensis.

It is the first time that an analytical method has allowed the establishment of the length of human occupations at archaeological sites.

The key is the last food that these hominids consumed.

For many years, the mobility of the groups of hominids and how long they spent in caves or outdoors has been a subject of discussion among scientists.

Now, an international team headed by researchers from the Catalan Institute of Human Paleoecology and Social Evolution (IPHES) in Tarragona has based its studies on the dental fossils of animals hunted by hominids in order to determine the vegetation in the environment and the way of life of Homo heidelbergensis.

“For the first time, a method has been put forward which allows us to establish the relative length of the human occupations at archaeological sites as, up until now, it was difficult to ascertain the difference between, for example, a single long-term occupation and a succession of shorter seasonal occupations in the same place”, said Florent Rivals, a researcher from ICREA.

In the study, the researchers analyze the dental wear of the ungulates (herbivorous mammals) caused by microscopic particles of opaline silica in plants.

These marks appear when eating takes place and erase the previous ones. This is why they are so useful.

Thanks to the “last supper phenomenon”, the scientists have been able to analyze the last food consumed by animals such as the Eurasian wild horse, the mouflon and the reindeer. “This method allows us to confirm the seasonal nature of the occupation”, Rivals added.

According to the team, the microwear of the teeth is sensitive to seasonal changes in the diet.

The application has allowed the researchers to estimate the length of the occupation of the site from the Lower Paleolithic Age in the cave of Arago (France) by the number of marks on the fossils and, therefore, the variation in the diet of several species of herbivores, as “each season presented food resources which were limited and different in the environment”, the paleontologist clarified.

“With this method, we were able to prove that at the site, which belonged to Homo heidelbergensis, there is evidence of differing mobility, as there were highly mobile groups and others with little mobility”, said Rivals. (ANI)

Obesity linked to increased risk of rapid cartilage loss

Washington, July 14 (ANI): A new study has shown that obesity, among other factors, is strongly associated with an increased risk of rapid cartilage loss.

Tibio-femoral cartilage is a flexible connective tissue that covers and protects the bones of the knee. Cartilage damage can occur due to excessive wear and tear, injury, misalignment of the joint or other factors, including osteoarthritis (the most common form of arthritis).

In osteoarthritis, the cartilage breaks down and, in severe cases, can completely wear away, leaving the joint without a cushion. The bones rub together, causing further damage, significant pain and loss of mobility.

The best way to prevent or slow cartilage loss and subsequent disability is to identify risk factors early.

“Osteoarthritis is a slowly progressive disorder, but a minority of patients with hardly any osteoarthritis at first diagnosis exhibit fast disease progression,” said the study’s lead author, Frank W. Roemer, M.D., adjunct associate professor at Boston University and co-director of the Quantitative Imaging Center at the Department of Radiology at Boston University School of Medicine.

“So we set out to identify baseline risk factors that might predict rapid cartilage loss in patients with early knee osteoarthritis or at high risk for the disease,” Dr. Roemer added.

The researchers recruited patients from the Multicenter Osteoarthritis (MOST) Study, a prospective study of 3,026 people, age 50 – 79, at risk for osteoarthritis or with early x-ray evidence of the disease.

Dr. Roemer’s study consisted of 347 knees in 336 patients. The patient group was comprised of 65.2 percent women, mean age 61.2, with a mean BMI of 29.5, which is classified as overweight. Recommended BMI typically ranges from 18.5 to 25. Only knees with minimal or no baseline cartilage damage were included.

Of 347 knees selected for the study, 20.2 percent exhibited slow cartilage loss over the 30-month follow-up period and 5.8 percent showed rapid cartilage loss.

Rapid cartilage loss was defined by a whole organ magnetic imaging score of at least 5, indicating a large full thickness loss of 75 percent in any subregion of the knee during the follow-up period.

The results showed that the top risk factors contributing to rapid cartilage loss were baseline cartilage damage, high BMI, tears or other injury to the meniscus (the cartilage cushion at the knee joint) and severe lesions seen on MRI at the initial exam. Other predictors were synovitis (inflammation of the membrane that lines the joints) and effusion (abnormal build-up of joint fluid).

Excess weight was significantly associated with an increased risk of rapid cartilage loss. No other demographic factors-including age, sex and ethnicity-were associated with rapid cartilage loss.

“As obesity is one of the few established risk factors for osteoarthritis, it is not surprising that obesity may also precede and predict rapid cartilage loss,” Dr. Roemer said.
he study has been published in the August issue of Radiology. (ANI)

Timberlake turns down selling own-name fragrance

Washington, July 11 (ANI): Justin Timberlake has refused to sell a line of fragrances under his name, saying that the move would imply a “level of narcissism”.

The pop singer, who has been the ambassador for Givenchy’s men’s fragrances Play and Play Intense for almost a year, ruled out having his own name on a bottle to boost sales.

“There’s some level of narcissism you have to put in check. I don’t know that I would be completely comfortable with a my-name fragrance,” Contactmusic quoted him as having told Women’s Wear Daily.

“It feels like cheating, almost. It doesn’t seem like you’re creating anything… I could see doing a William Rast fragrance, but that’s as far as I think I’ll take it,” he added. (ANI)

‘Red-faced’ Mischa Barton kicked out by toilet attendant!

New York, July 3 (ANI): O.C. star Mischa Barton was left embarrassed after she was kicked out by a toilet attendant for dragging a friend into the toilet stall with her, it has emerged.

The 23-year-old actress was out with five friends and her new boyfriend at Whisky Mist nightclub in Mayfair, London, when she tried to drag friend Bridget into the toilet stall with her.

As they tried to go into the toilet stall, they were stopped by the toilet attendant, who kicked the actress out of the loo.

According to the Daily Mail, the attendant was later forced to knock on the door repeatedly, when Barton took too long in the stall solo.

“Then her mate was knocking to check she was feeling okay,” the New York Daily News quoted an onlooker as saying.

“When she came out of the cubicle she was complaining about people knocking on the door. She looked slightly worse for the wear as she attempted to apply her make-up,” the onlooker added. (ANI)

Men, too, feel anxious to strip off on the beach

London, July 3 (ANI): It’s not just the women who worry about body image and are reluctant to bare it all, for men too feel uncool about stripping off, according to researchers.

The survey by Tescodiets.com revealed that almost 50 percent men worry about baring their stomachs on the beach.

In fact, one in three men have considered avoiding a beach holiday altogether because of how they look in their swimming trunks.

Seven in 10 men surveyed were worried about baring their bodies, 47 percent were most cautious about revealing their stomachs.

More than 2,000 men were questioned for the survey, out of which, almost 75 percent thought that British men get just as nervous as women, when it comes to slipping on the swimwear.

The boys resort to many tactics to cover up in the heat-nearly a quarter wear shorts or a T-shirt even in the sea, 40 percent diet and around one third strip off only when in the water.

Over three-quarters of men were jealous of toned, athletic men they spotted on the beach.

One third of men said that they were most worried about how they looked to the opposite sex, as compared to just 13 percent who worried about what other men would think.

“Every summer we hear plenty about women dreading having to wear a swimsuit but men clearly have many of the same issues,” Sky News quoted Catherine Ambrozewicz, head of Tescodiets.com, as saying. (ANI)

Madras HC declares salwar kameez decent wear

Chennai July 01(ANI): The Madras high court has declared that salwar kameez is decent wear.

Responding to a petition filed by V Kamalaman internee of the Venkateshwara Homeopathic Medical College, Chennai, Justice K Venkatraman said, the college could not insist on a particular dress code.

Kamalam was prevented from attending classes for not wearing a saree during the internship. Kamalam informed the college management that she found it difficult to wear a saree. When the college refused to relent she filed a case against the college management with the National Commission for Women and the Madras High Court.

“No rule or regulation has been cited before the court to show that girl internees should wear only saree during internship. Even the prospectus of the institution does not mention any such dress code, and in the absence of such rules and regulations, the college cannot insist its students to wear a particular dress,” Justice Venkatraman said in his order.

According to the Venkateshwarsa Homeopathic Medical College, all female internees are required to wear sarees and male internees formal pants and shirt during the one-year compulsory resident internship.

The college management claims the saree only dress code was introduced “to instil and maintain discipline, dignity, and decorum among the internees.”(ANI)

‘Judi Dench factor’ always sparks swearing complaints

London, June 24 (ANI): When it comes to actors swearing in films, the viewers can pardon any star other than Dame Judi Dench for using foul language on screen, according to the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC).

The BBFC says that there exists a phenomenon, called the “Judi Dench factor”, which makes filmgoers less forgiving towards Britain’s most distinguished actress talk tough.

In its annual report, the BBFC, which is responsible for awarding film ratings, has revealed that four of the six complaints it received about the James Bond film ‘Quantum of Solace’ related to the language of Dame Judi’s character M.

The film has a 12A rating and contains several violent scenes.

“Almost every time Dame Judi swears in a film, regardless of its category, we can expect a number of complaints,” the Telegraph quoted the BBFC as saying in its report.

The film prompted only one complaint about violence and two from viewers who mistook a shadow on a woman’s leg for her genitalia.

“The remainder were upset by the film’s languagethis may be attributed to the ‘Judi Dench factor,’” the report said.

It further added: “This beloved actress plays M, Bond’s tough-talking boss. However, it was her tough talking which upset the viewers.”

A spokeswoman for the BBFC said that although Dame Judi used a wear word comfortably placed in a 12A film “it seems that she hould not use such language.” (ANI)

Almaty hosts fashion week for Central Asian, Chinese designers

Almaty (Kazakhstan), May 21 (ANI): Designers from Central Asia gathered in Kazakhstan’s Almaty city recently to showcase their designs and styles.

The event, which is now in its seventh year, also showcased Almaty as Central Asia’s cosmopolitan cultural center.

The event showcased ready-to wear collections for Autumn-Winter 2009-2010 and also featured designers from China and Europe.

There was a decidedly Kazakh flavour to the collection shown by local designer Zhadira Shakieva this year.

Shakieva said that she tried to combine the beauty of women with the Kazakh national character.

Chinese designer Vong Yu Tau showcased his latest designs in Almaty.

He described Kazakhstan as an important trading partner for China, and added that the fashion business is no exception.

Most models on the catwalk came from Central Asia – Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. Three days of catwalks were arranged, as well as beauty therapy master classes and a regional stylists’ competition.

Castings were held earlier at the Hotel Kazakhstan to select the models that will make it onto the catwalk. Around 500 models from Central Asian countries came for the selection procedure.

This year’s Fashion Week theme was “Litzedeiki”, which translated loosely means ‘female deceitfulness’. (ANI)

Ashley Olsen abandoning acting for a career in fashion industry

Washington, May 14 (ANI): Hollywood actress Ashley Olsen revealed that she would soon be bidding goodbye to her acting career, as she is keen to focus on fashion designing full time.

Ashley Olsen, who has been acting ever since her stint in sitcom Full House, when she was just 9 months old, has decided to focus on her fashion collection ‘The Row’ with sister Mary Kate Olsen, while the latter focuses on acting.

“I’ve been transitioning from acting as a kid to doing something that I’m choosing for myself – to be part of the fashion industry. That’s what I want for my future. It has nothing to do with my past, nothing to do with anyone else’s agenda. And I followed my heart the whole way,” Contactmusic quoted Ashley Olsen as telling VMan.

“The Row is really something that I’m doing while my sister still wants to focus on acting. She’s my partner in The Row, but she trusts me with the everyday. I mean, I see her like 10 times a day,” Ashley Olsen added.

Ashley, who is expanding the collection further to embrace men’s wear in the autumn this year, is bent upon proving that her collection is not just another celebrity line. (ANI)

Sea urchins’ digging teeth are designed to stay sharp

Washington, May 5 (ANI): Scientists at Weizmann Institute, US, have revealed how the teeth of sea urchins are designed to stay sharp, which might give engineers insights into creating ever-sharp tools or mechanical parts.

The urchins dig holes to fit their globular bodies using their five teeth, which, like those of rodents, are ground down at the tip but continue to grow on the other end throughout the animals’ lives.

The amazing part, however, is that the teeth, which need to be harder and stronger than the rocky limestone being dug out, are themselves made almost entirely of calcite – the same calcite that makes up much of the limestone.

In a series of studies spanning more than a decade, Professors Steve Weiner and Lia Addadi of Weizmann’s Structural Biology Department have discovered that the urchins’ secret lies in a combination of ingenious design strategies.

In the latest of these studies, the scientists found that the sea urchins’ teeth contain crystals of magnesium calcite, which are smaller, harder and denser than those of pure calcite.

They are concentrated at the grinding tip of the tooth, particularly in the tip’s center, where the most force is being exerted in the course of grinding.

What holds these crystals at the center of the tip is a matrix of larger and softer calcite crystals.

While in most such materials a matrix of hard fibers contains a softer filling, the reverse is true for the urchins’ tooth.

A matrix of relatively soft calcite fibers holds the harder magnesium calcite crystals, which allows these crystals to spread over the entire surface of the tooth.

The presence of magnesium calcite crystals acts like sand paper that helps to grind the rock down.

In the latest study, the researchers used X-ray photoelectron emission spectromicroscopy and other high-resolution imaging methods to uncover yet another amazing structural feature of sea urchin tooth design.

They found that all the crystalline elements that make up the tooth are aligned in two different arrays, and that these arrays are ‘interdigitated,’ or interlocked like the fingers of folded hands, just at the tip of the tooth where most of the wear occurs.

The scientists believe that interlocking produces a notched, serrated ridge resembling that of a carpenter’s file.

This ridge is self-sharpening: as the tooth is being ground down, the crystalline layers break in such a way that the ridge always stays corrugated. (ANI)

Wanted: a doctor to counsel Britain’s stressed, tired spies

London, May 3 (ANI): Britain’s secret service, Secret Intelligence Service (SIS), is looking for an occupational health adviser to counsel spies, who are feeling worse for wear after taking on enemies such as Al-Qaeda and Chinese cyber-spies.

MI6 is advertising for the 40,000-pound job on the Secret Intelligent Service (SIS) website, which reads: “Here at SIS (or MI6 as you may know us), we operate across the globe. The variety of challenges extends to every corner of our organisation and occupational health is no exception.

“We are looking for a qualified occupational health adviser to cover an interesting mix of work, from specialised health surveillance and pre-travel briefings and clearances to sickness absence management.”

The new recruit will be given guidance on foreign travel – which might include checking for enemy tarantulas before settling down to sleep, reports The Times. Foreign Office spokesman said: “The SIS may be involved in some unique situations but they have a duty to protect their staff.”

An intelligence source said: “This is a very stressful job, especially as one cannot confide in your family. Many people turn to alcohol or even recreational drugs to cope.”

Leading designer bashes Michelle Obama’s style sense

London, Apr 24 (ANI): The designer who has dressed the wives of US presidents from Mamie Eisenhower to Laura Bush believes that the newest Fist Lady Michelle Obama’s dressing sense is not up to the mark.

Arnold Scaasi tells US fashion bible Women’s Wear Daily: “She’s great-looking, she has a great personality and she’s obviously very bright, but something is amiss.”

His criticism stems from the fact that Mrs Obama wore a cardigan when she met The Queen during the G20 summit earlier this month.

“It should have been a jacket,” The Sun quoted him, as saying.

Scaasi has written several books, the most recent entitled, Women I Have Dressed (and Undressed). (ANI)

Michael Jackson auction opens for viewing

Los Angeles – The contents of former pop idol Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch went on public viewing Tuesday ahead of an auction next week that is being challenged by the controversial singer’s lawyers. Among the approximately 1,390 items on display at a former Beverly Hills department store were the wrought iron gates of Neverland Ranch, the crystal-covered glove worn by Jackson in the video for Billie Jean, numerous musical awards, a letter from former president Ronald Reagan, heaps of ornate furniture, dozens of statues and a massive collection of toys, games and pinball machines.

Organizers of the sale at Julien’s Auctions estimate that it could raise between 10 million and 20 million dollars, and take a sizable chunk out of Jackson’s estimated 24-million-dollar debt. Jackson also recently signed on to perform a 50-concert run in London in a bid to raise cash and solve his financial problems.

Jackson’s legal representatives are trying to stop the sale claiming that the singer was never given a chance to sort out his personal effects. Their initial motion was denied, but another court hearing is set for Wednesday.

Jackson lived in Neverland for more than 10 years before leaving it in the aftermath of the child molestation case in 2005, in which he was acquitted of charges that he sexually abused a young visitor at the ranch. Auctioneers spent three months emptying the massive estate and have split the eclectic collection into three main categories: stage wear and music memorabilia, toys and Disney memorablia, and furniture and decorative arts.

“Neverland represents Michael Jackson’s Xanadu,” said auction director Martin Nolan. “There’s something for everyone, from paintings to porcelain to bicycles.”

Also on offer are numerous portraits of Jackson is his favourite royal poses, a tour bus, bumper cars and all-terrain vehicles. There are life-size statues of ET and Darth Vader, endless Peter Pan paraphernalia, and dozens of figures of butlers, maids and children that were scattered around the house and its grounds. There’s also a Rolls Royce limousine with 24-karat gold trim and numerous jackets Jackson wore on stage and in television appearances.

Online bidding has already started at juliensauctions. com, and the live auction from April 22 to 25 will determine the winners.(dpa)
