World Cup 2010 Betting: England Do Battle With Germany

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM, Jun 27 (MARKET WIRE) —
What is it with Franz Beckenbauer? Does the legendary German player and
coach still harbour a grudge against England for 1966? Firstly he said
the team had gone backwards under Fabio Capello and resorted to the bad
old days of ‘kick and rush’ and now he is claiming that the England
players look jaded and burnt-out because of the demands of the Premier
League – is Franz getting a little jittery?

Capello owes ‘The Kaiser’ a debt of gratitude for, if he needed any
inspiration for his pre-match team talk ahead of England’s clash with the
Germans in Bloemfontein, Beckenbauer has just provided the majority of
the content. There are just signs that Capello’s normally dictatorial
style of management may have mellowed a little while England have been in
South Africa.

Six months ago it would have been unheard of for the Italian to allow his
players to have a beer on the eve of a match and contemporaries claim it
was also most un-Capello like to see the coach run on to the field at the
final whistle against Slovenia and embrace his players. Maybe that was
sparked by the relief of knowing that his GBP 6million-a-year FA contract
was still relatively secure.

There is still a general consensus that England need to improve further
if they are to eliminate a fresh, new-look Germany but both teams have
been priced up at 10/1 to win the tournament by Paddy Power, who have the
winner’s likely quarter-final opponents Argentina at 9/2. The England
betting odds have lengthened since the start of the tournament on June 11.

With Wayne Rooney still awaiting his first goal at the World Cup, the
Manchester United star’s football betting odds are out to 40/1 to finish
as the tournament’s leading scorer, the same odds as England’s hero
against Slovenia, Jermaine Defoe. Germany’s Lukas Podolski and Miroslav
Klose, who also have one goal to their name so far, are at the same price.

Only twice in their history have Germany failed to make it to the quarter
finals of the World Cup. The last time was in 1978 as West Germany,
eliminated at the second group stage when they finished behind the
Netherlands and Italy. England failed to qualify for Argentina 78. In
four previous World Cup meetings, both nations have won 1 game with the
other 2 resulting in a draw. The most recent was in 1990 when Bobby
Robson’s side went out on penalties.

In South African township, the passion lives on

South Africa (Reuters) – Barcelona soccer club have been training this week on a grassless, hard-dirt pitch in South Africa’s Mangaung township. Not Lionel Messi and his team of champions from Spain, but a group of local youths.

Sports

They have no sponsorship from Coca Cola, McDonald’s, or anyone else. They cannot afford tickets to see Wayne Rooney, Frank Lampard and other household names from England when they come to Bloemfontein to play Germany in the World Cup on Sunday.

Yet if the future of African soccer lies anywhere, it may well be with impoverished but impassioned kids like these.

“I wake up thinking about football. Football means so much to me. I think I will make it,” said Matthews Leeuw, an 18-year-old schoolboy, during a break in afternoon training.

The playing field is on a garbage-strewn waste ground in Manguang on the edge of Bloemfontein, a vast expanse of tin shacks, squat breeze-block homes, taverns and car repair shops.

The black residential districts known as townships are a legacy of South Africa’s apartheid regime and although they no longer suffer the political oppression of that era, many are still bleak, deprived areas where life is tough.

The goals have no nets, the pitch is strewn with broken glass, and the young players’ leave their clothes in plastic shopping bags after changing into ragged shorts and split boots. Cows sometimes wander over.

“Only the city people get chances. No scouts come down here,” Leeuw said.

Barcelona are run by Quentin Sewele, 26, a township resident who once played for local side the Mighty Lions. He started the team a year ago and they will make their debut in the city’s Metropolitan League in August.

He chose the name because he liked Barcelona, he said.

“I want the team to play like Barcelona. They are all schoolkids. When I was their age, I had a team, so I thought why not start one? It motivates them.”

He funds them himself, even though he has no permanent job. For their league debut, they will wear white T-shirts he bought at a local store.

NO TICKETS FOR THE BIG MATCH

The World Cup has thrilled the boys even though South Africa have gone out and only Ghana of the other African teams taking part look likely to progress to the second round of the tournament, the first to be held in the continent.

“It’s good for Africa. I tell everyone the time will come for Africa. This was not the time,” Sewele said.

He said he had three players he thought had future prospects and introduced a reporter to 17-year-old Kaptein Msiwonakele.

“Football means everything to me. I play for the passion. It is my first priority. I want to become professional, especially to play for Manchester United,” Msiwonakele said.

He said his parents had left him and he lived with his grandmother. He watched the World Cup on television with friends.

He was disappointed South Africa were eliminated but proud of their performance, which saw them beat 2006 runners-up France 2-1 in their final game.

“I’m still interested. It is the first time in Africa. Only Ghana are through but I think they are going to make us proud. They are going places,” he said.

They were excited about the prospect of the England v Germany match taking place in Bloemfontein and dreamed of meeting the likes of Frank Lampard and Steve Gerrard.

“I just wish we had some money to take these players to the stadium,” Sewele said.

Still, Leeuw said, the Barcelona boys had learnt a lot from watching the games on TV.

“We are the future. We want to represent South Africa.”

England World Cup Odds With Victor Chandler

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM, Jun 17 (MARKET WIRE) —
World Cup Betting specialists, Victor Chandler are offering their
customers some brilliant world cup odds when it comes to betting on
England matches at the World Cup. Their ‘Roo Beauty’ promotion proved
popular for the England v USA match and once again, if you place a losing
First Goalscorer or Correct Score bet and Wayne Rooney scores the last
goal of Friday’s match against Algeria, you will have your stake refunded
as a free bet.

You can bet on England to beat Algeria at odds of 1/5 with Victor
Chandler, with the Three Lions looking to kickstart their World Cup
campaign in Cape Town. England will be a popular pick when it comes to
accumulator bets and you can also bet on which goalkeeper will start the
match at the Greenpoint Stadium.

Robert Green is currently the 10/11 favourite to retain his place in the
England starting line-up, despite making a costly mistake against the
USA. Will Fabio Capello stick with the West Ham goalkeeper or will the
Italian turn to the more experienced David James? Victor Chandler offer
odds of 11/8 that the latter starts against Algeria, while you can bet on
Joe Hart at 11/2.

It could be a good time to bet on England to win the 2010 World Cup, with
Victor Chandler currently offering odds of 7/1 that the Three Lions go
all the way. A confident performance and result against Algeria could see
the bookmakers shorten their odds.

You can also currently bet on how many goals England will score during
the tournament. If you’re anticipating the Three Lions putting a few past
Algeria, you can get odds of 19/10 that over nine goals are scored,
although some people might fancy the same price that Capello’s team
manage less than seven.

the Future”.

Rooney’s musical pillow to help him ‘dream’ of firing England to WC glory

London, June 4(ANI): England striker Wayne Rooney has been provided with a pillow that plays his favourite songs after he complained of struggling to sleep without background noise.

The special Sound Asleep Pillows costs 20 pounds and contains tiny speakers, which can be rigged up to a radio or iPod, allowing the user to drift off while listening to their favourite tunes.

“We sent Wayne one after hearing about his problem. A lot of our customers tell us it really helps, As massive football fans at Sound Asleep, we’ll do absolutely anything we can to get him a good night’s sleep,” The Daily Star quoted Jamie Moryoussef, Sound Asleep Pillows boss, as saying.

“After Wayne was snapped getting on the plane with the pillow under his arm, we’re now expecting a huge increase in demand and we are very happy with the unexpected side-effect,” he added. (ANI)

Jong’s double secures draw for North Korea

North Korea forward Jong Tae-Se, dubbed the ‘People’s Wayne Rooney’ by Asian media, scored twice for North Korea in a 2-2 draw with fellow World Cup finalists Greece in a friendly on Tuesday.

Greece twice took the lead but were pegged back by the impressive Japan-based frontman.

Kostas Katsouranis’s second-minute strike from close range after defender Sotiris Kyrgiakos headed a Giorgos Karagounis free-kick across goal gave Greece the perfect start.

But the Koreans, with their direct running and incisive passing making the pedestrian Greeks look embarrassingly one-dimensional, dominated the remainder of the half.

North Korea skipper Hong Yong-Jo twice rattled the crossbar and on 23 minutes Jong equalised with a superb long range effort that went in off the underside of the crossbar.

Greece’s sole threat stemmed from their set pieces and after making five changes at halftime, they regained the lead through substitute Angelos Charisteas’s volley from another Karagounis free-kick.

But Jong showed his class with a clinical finish moments later, controlling a long ball, skipping past Nikos Spiropoulos and then firing powerfully past substitute goalkeeper Alexandros Tzorvas to level again.

Greece, who begin their Group B campaign against South Korea on June 12, struggled to make an impression in a disjointed display and coach Otto Rehhagel will be hoping for an improvement when they continue their preparations against Paraguay on June 2.

“I expect us to get better as things move on from here,” he told reporters.

“What I didn’t like was that we were slow with our passing.

“They (North Korea) play a fast game and I expect us to play the ball more quickly and have more fluency. Our group opponents South Korea are a very good side and we must be absolutely ready for the start of the World Cup because we will have to give our all in every game.”

North Korea are in Group G with Brazil, Ivory Coast and Portugal.

Capello to experiment against Mexico

Fabio Capello will rest key players and experiment with England’s more marginal World Cup hopefuls in Monday’s friendly against fellow finalists Mexico at Wembley.

The Italian, whose squad have been at an altitude training camp in Austria, said his four Chelsea players and Portsmouth goalkeeper David James would definitely not play in England’s last home game before the World Cup in South Africa.

“I think absolutely these five players don’t play,” the England manager told reporters on Sunday.

Chelsea played Portsmouth in the FA Cup final at Wembley last weekend.

With John Terry, Frank Lampard, Ashley and Joe Cole ruled out, and Manchester City midfielder Gareth Barry recovering from an ankle injury, the way is open for the likes of Adam Johnson, Michael Dawson, Ledley King and Jamie Carragher to remind the manager of their talents.

“Some players will be important for me to know their attitude on the pitch,” said Capello. “I will experiment against Mexico.”

That could mean Wayne Rooney being used as a lone striker or a switch to a 3-5-2 system.

Capello said he more or less knew the 23 players he will take to South Africa but there was still room for late changes.

He added that he had no concerns about the state of the playing surface at Wembley.

England also have a friendly against Japan in Graz, Austria on May 30 before the final 23-man squad is selected.

Rooney perfect role model for England team: Capello

London, May 21(ANI): England manager Fabio Capello has hailed striker Wayne Rooney as the perfect role model for the Three Lions team.

Capello also believes that it is Rooney’s constant desire to improve his skills that is supporting the striker’s quest to be recognized as one of the world’s best players.

“Wayne Rooney is one of the best talents I have ever coached. He’s like Raul in that he is a very important player and a big talent. Every time Rooney trains he wants to stay on the training pitch for as long as possible,” The Daily Express quoted Capello, as saying.

“It is really important the other players see that Rooney, one of the best players in the world, wants to stay on the pitch and wants to continue to learn,” he added.

England stars need to be at their best to win World Cup: Le Saux

London, May 21(ANI): Former England footballer Graeme Le Saux claims that every single member of the Three Lions’ squad will have to be at their best to win the World Cup.

“We’ve got a fantastic manager and some great players, so we just have to hope the whole squad combines and gels. It’s important that the players on the fringes of the first XI are in the right frame of mind to put in great performances when needed,” The Sun quoted Le Saux, as saying.

“If we’re going to be successful in South Africa, it’s clearly going to be about the squad and not just the regulars. I don’t think you can rely on one player,” he added.

The 41-year-old also believes that striker Wayne Rooney could be the difference, but Capello would not win matches without a system and a game plan.

“If it’s just about Rooney, then we won’t achieve anything — and that’s with no disrespect to him, quite the opposite in fact. He’s a key part of how we attack and score goals, but ultimately we’re going to need other players to chip in,” Le Saux said.

“And that in a sense is exactly what we have in the rest of the squad with the likes of Lampard and Gerrard. If you look at the other top teams, they all have great players, but there’s a fantastic team and structure around them,” he added. (ANI)

Wayne Rooney loves to hear a buzz while sleeping!

London, May 20 (ANI): Wayne Rooney’s obsession with hearing a buzz in the background as he sleeps extends much beyond the hairdryer – the Man U footie sleeps on the floor of planes when he flies to feel the jet engines’ vibration.

“If I”m staying in a hotel or I”m sleeping on my own I have the hairdryer on,” the Sun quoted Rooney, as saying.

He added: “When I”m with COLEEN I have the fan on. I don”t know what it is, but the noise just helps me sleep.

“If we”re on long-haul flights I”ve been known to sleep on the floor so I hear the engine, and on occasions when the manager has walked past he”s asked, ”What are you doing?”” (ANI)

Shilton backs Rooney to live up to expectations of English fans during WC

London, May 19 (ANI): England legend Peter Shilton has backed ace striker Wayne Rooney to live up to the expectations of fans during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa

“At the end of the day Wayne is only 24, but I’m sure he can deal with everything. He’s really matured as a player and shaken off the impetuousness of his younger years,” The Sun quoted Shilton, as saying.

“The aggression and will to win remain, along with the competitive spirit, but he’s harnessed it in the right way now. Wayne’s far more disciplined and that’s obviously going to be important in South Africa,” he said.

Capello has a number of options with the likes of Emile Heskey, Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe and Darren Bent to partner Rooney in front, the paper said.

But Shilton expects Aston Villa player Heskey to get the nod when England’s Group C campaign kicks off against the United States on June 12, it added.

“It’s a difficult one to call. Heskey’s not an out-and-out goal scorer but his strength makes him a terrific target man. At the end of the day I think it will come down to the system Capello plays,” he said.

“However, I wouldn’t like to see Rooney up front on his own as that would take away from his strengths. I think Heskey will get the nod because Capello likes to play with a strong man leading the line,” Shilton said. (ANI)

Barcelona’s 80-mn pounds bid for ace striker Rooney

London, May 19 (ANI): Barcelona is preparing a massive bid of 80 million pounds for Manchester United’s ace striker Wayne Rooney.

Double Footballer of the Year Rooney, 24, was with England’s squad in the Austrian Alps unaware of Barcelona making discreet moves to take him to La Liga.

Barcelona’s interest in Rooney has similarities with Real Madrid’s pursuit of Cristiano Ronaldo and football power on the pitch and politics off it are interwoven in their interest in him, The Daily Express reports.

Europe’s most attractive club has been knocked off their perch after their Champions League semi-final defeat against Inter Milan.

Coach Pep Guardiola is keen to restore the side to the top immediately and will seek reinforcements, the paper said.

Barcelona also has advanced plans to sign Valencia’s David Villa and Arsenal’s Cesc Fabregas, but the real coup would be a successful move for Rooney, it added.

The Barcelona camp has activated agents to sound out the possibility of a Rooney move.

Rooney is still under contract with United until 2012, but selling the club’s biggest asset will help them prevent making a loss of millions of pounds. (ANI)

Hurst backs England to reach World Cup semis, but not win the trophy

London, May 18 (ANI): Football legend Sir Geoff Hurst has backed England to reach the semi-final of the 2010 World Cup, but is not convinced that the Three Lions are strong enough to lift the trophy.

Hurst is confident coach Fabio Capello will guide the team to the semi-finals for the first time since Bobby Robson did it at Italia 90, but is not sure that the team would be able to emulate the success Sir Alf Ramsey’s men enjoyed in 1966.

Hurst, who scored a hat-trick as England beat Germany 4-2 in the final 44 years ago, said: “You’ve got to be very careful with being negative about football, but I just think we’re a bit short at the moment.”

“The goalkeeping area’s a problem. I’ve spoken to Gordon Banks and Peter Shilton, two of the best keepers we’ve ever had, and they have concerns. Up front, Emile Heskey seems to be the No1 choice to partner Wayne Rooney. However, he hasn’t played much this year, so there are concerns in some key areas,” The Sun quoted Hurst, as saying.

“Having said all that, I think the squad and the management will expect to at least get to the semi-finals. The draw is very favourable and we’re quite capable of beating most teams. When you get to the semis, who knows what will happen as that’s when you come up against the Brazils and Spains.

“It’s all about getting the squad right and keeping your best players on the field. That’s in the lap of the gods through injuries and suspensions, but I think we’re going to the World Cup better prepared than we’ve been for some time,” Hurst said.

Rooney looks very tired, drained: Capello

London, May 12 (ANI): With 2010 football World Cup finals being less than four weeks away, England boss Fabio Capello has said that he has inherited a shattered and drained Wayne Rooney.

England’s chances of winning the World Cup rest on Rooney’s performance and in the last few weeks, the 24-year-old striker has fought to play despite knee, ankle and groin injuries.

Capello said: “He has played a lot of games this season. At the end of it he looked very tired.”

The Italian believes Rooney probably needed more rest after injuring an ankle against Bayern Munich and returning to England on crutches.

Rooney was back for the return leg of the Champions League quarterfinal a week later but groin problems followed, the Daily Express reports.

“After the ankle injury, the balance of his body was not the same, so it is easy to get injured,” Capello said.

Now Capello believes Rooney must rest and recuperate in order to fire on all cylinders in England’s opening World Cup game against the USA on June 12.

The England manager insisted: “I think Rooney will be fit in a short time. I hope so because he is a very important player for us.”

Capello and his staff will monitor Rooney closely in the Austrian Alps and he could be rested or used sparingly in the two warm-up games. England’s head coach is hoping the camp will recapture the spirit, which helped the team qualify for South Africa so emphatically. (ANI)

Rooney voted best footballer by Writers’ Association

London, May 14 (ANI): Manchester United ace striker Wayne Rooney won the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year award and said that he wants to become a top-class manager.

Rooney got record percentage of votes from journalists with just over 81 percent of votes cast, finishing ahead of Chelsea forward Didier Drogba and Manchester City’s Carlos Tevez to win the prestigious award.

Rooney received his award at the FWA’s gala dinner at the Lancaster London Hotel on Thursday evening, The Telegraph reports.

Rooney, who scored 34 goals in all competitions this term, admitted it was a privilege to follow the likes of Bobby Moore and Sir Bobby Charlton to be named Footballer of the Year, and revealed he intended to stay involved in the game for many years to come.

“I would like to (step into management). I joined Everton when I was nine years old and football has been a massive part of my life. When you do stop playing, I want to be involved in football,” Rooney said.

“I started doing my coaching badges this year, and probably did not do as many classes as I would have liked. Hopefully I can continue them next year. I love football and enjoy football – I can’t see myself running a restaurant, I want to be in football,” he said.

“But now I am only 24. Hopefully I can progress and the best years are still ahead of me. I am always learning every day, and take things in from all my teammates. As a player you are never the finished article. I want to keep learning and getting better.”

Rooney’s immediate plans are to focus on the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. (ANI)
