How people lose muscles as they get older

Washington, Sep 12 (ANI): Even the most well-built people tend to loose their muscles and develop thinner arms and legs as they get older, and researchers in Nottingham have now explained why this happens.

As age catches up, it becomes harder to keep our muscles healthy-they get smaller, which decreases strength and increases the likelihood of falls and fractures.

The researchers have already shown that when older people eat, they cannot make muscle as fast as the young, and now they have found that the suppression of muscle breakdown, which also happens during feeding, is blunted with age.

Led by Michael Rennie, the scientists and doctors at The University of Nottingham Schools of Graduate Entry Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, believe that a ‘double whammy’ affects people aged over 65.

But the team think that weight training may “rejuvenate” muscle blood flow, and help retain muscle for older people.

The study’s results may explain the ongoing loss of muscle in older people- when they eat they do not build enough muscle with the protein in food and also, the insulin (a hormone released during a meal) fails to shut down the muscle breakdown that rises between meals and overnight.

Normally, in young people, insulin acts to slow muscle breakdown.

These problems could be a result of a failure to deliver nutrients and hormones to muscle because of a poorer blood supply.

In the study, the researchers compared one group of people in their late 60s to a group of 25-year-olds, with equal numbers of men and women.

Professor Rennie said: “The results were clear. The younger people’s muscles were able to use insulin we gave to stop the muscle breakdown, which had increased during the night. The muscles in the older people could not.”

“In the course of our tests, we also noticed that the blood flow in the leg was greater in the younger people than the older ones. This set us thinking: maybe the rate of supply of nutrients and hormones is lower in the older people? This could explain the wasting we see,” he added.

Later, Beth Phillips, a PhD student working with Rennie, confirmed the blunting effect of age on leg blood flow after feeding, with and without exercise.

The team predicted that weight training would reduce this blunting.

“Indeed, she found that three sessions a week over 20 weeks ‘rejuvenated’ the leg blood flow responses of the older people. They became identical to those in the young,” said Rennie.

The study has been published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. (ANI)

Lennon’s tape reveals Macca was most important person to him

New York, September 7 (ANI): A new tape of late singer John Lennon’s interviews has him saying that fellow Beatles member Paul McCartney was the most important person to him apart from his wife.

“I only ever asked two people to work with me as a partner,” the New York Post quoted the Times of London as reporting as to what Lennon said in the tape.

“One was Paul McCartney and the other Yoko Ono. Paul and me were the Beatles,” Lennon claims in the tape.

However, according to the newspaper, their friendship didn’t last long and, when the band broke up, he told Paul: “I want a divorce.”

Rock journalist Ray Connelly recorded the tapes, in which Lennon even mentions early death.

He said: “[wasting] my life as I have been. I have to learn to do that because I don’t want to die at 40.”

He was shot to death at that age in 1980. (ANI)

Ponting trying to divert attention from Oz failure: Flower

London, July 15 (ANI): Reacting for the first time after a spellbinding climax in the Cardiff Test, coach Andy Flower has said that Australian skipper Ricky Ponting by accusing the England team of delaying tactics, is trying to deflect attention from Australia’s failure to take the wicket they needed to go ahead in the Ashes series

The England’s team director totally rejected the assertion that his side was guilty of gamesmanship if not cheating.

“I am a little surprised at all the hullabaloo over it, to be honest. From my own perspective, in that last hour of the game, there was no time wasting by us. Have a look at the footage yourself. Never did we consciously try to waste time,” he said.

Flower was upset by the allegations of Ponting, who said in the immediate aftermath that England’s behaviour in twice sending out their 12th man in the closing stages was “pretty ordinary.”

Ponting also suggested that the issue should be taken up with the England hierarchy, The Independent reported.

“He has got his own opinion, and I respect his opinion. He is a very good cricketer and has been a very good ambassador for Australia. But in this instance, I think he has made a meal of it,” Flower said.

Flower added that Ponting was making far too much of it and deflecting attention from what really mattered – England’s great escape and Australia’s failure to take the wicket they needed to go ahead in the series.

Flower seemed perplexed by the attention that has been given to England’s decision to send on the 12th man, Bilal Shafayat, in successive overs, the second time accompanied by the team physiotherapist, Steve McCaig.

“Most teams in those situations, you have batsmen talking in the middle for extended periods, knocking down the pitch, changing gloves, getting drinks, which all waste time. At no stage in the last couple of hours did we do that,” Flower said.

“The second point, was that there was perceived confusion out in the middle about what time the game was going to end. We needed to get messages out to them to make sure they were clear.” (ANI)

Judge blasts council for wasting £5k of taxpayers’ cash over dropped wrapper case!

London, Jun 20 (ANI): A judge has blasted a council officer for wasting 5000 pounds of taxpayers’ money by dragging a teenager to crown court over a dropped mint wrapper.

The sweet wrapper had blown out of Larissa Wilkinson’s car window when her 18-month-old niece unwrapped it, and when the officer spotted it, the 19-year-old girl was charged with depositing controlled waste.

Judge Roger Scott was stunned when she appeared before him at crown court, where murderers and rapists face trial.

“Can you explain to me why this charge was ever brought? She has dropped a single sweet wrapper,” the Sun quoted the judge as asking the council’s barrister Austin Newman.

“Is it controlled waste? I’ve looked it up and I don’t see how you could possibly argue it is.

“It’s the most inappropriate set of proceedings I’ve personally ever, ever seen and it’s a fantastic waste of community charge payers’ money.

“This was a grotesque misuse of the powers of the authorities,” he stated.

The judge refused to let Wilkinson sit in the dock, and invited her into the witness stand instead.

The interior design student explained that she was driving her Fiat Punto with niece Lyla Henderson when the tot unwrapped a Bassett’s Murray Mint, and dropped the wrapper in the car but it blew away.

Wilkinson, who had passed her test a month earlier, only realised what had happened when a 75 pounds fixed penalty was sent to her home in Mirfield, West Yorks.

“I decided I wasn’t going to pay. As a student I only get 30 pounds a week to live on. But also it just wasn’t fair. It wasn’t my fault and if I’d tried to stop the wrapper then I might have crashed,” she said.

She appeared before magistrates three times, but chose to be tried by jury at Bradford Crown Court.

“The judge was great. I am so pleased he was on my side. It was quite scary,” she added.

The cost of the case, estimated at 5,000 pounds, would have spiralled to 10,000 pounds if it had been heard before a jury.

“Rubbish thrown from vehicles contributes greatly to the defacement of our streets,” a Kirklees Council spokesman said.

“The person in control of a vehicle is liable for waste thrown from that vehicle whether they threw the waste out or not,” he added.

Wilkinson accepted a caution, but did not have to pay the 75 pounds.

“I hope you enjoyed your day in court,” the judge told her. (ANI)

Oz woman helps launch an environment friendly campaign

Melbourne, May 20 (ANI): AN Australian businesswoman Natalie Isaacs was dazed to realize that how her own measures to conserve energy and our planet helped launch a campaign to protect our environment.

Natalie made her family adopt few measures at home to avoid wasting energy and was dazed to see the results.

“Until a few years ago it all seemed too hard. I wasn’t connected to the problem and then I took a closer look and found you can help by changing little things in your daily life,” the businesswoman and mother of four from Newport on Sydney’s Northern Beaches said yesterday,” The Daily Telegraph quoted Natalie, as saying.

“We did simple things. Turned off appliances at the power point, lights off if someone’s not in the room, the kids have two worms farms for organic waste. I use green bags. We try to use as little packaging as possible. We’ve cut our carbon emissions and saved money too – our last quarter power bill was down 12 per cent on the year before,” Natalie added.

Soon after she decided to show other women that how easy it is to conserve energy, by taking few important measures.

Thus she co-founded a campaign called 1 million women with conservationist Michelle Grosvenor, to tell other women that how they can contribute towards saving our planet.I think many are like me. I had my head completely buried in the sand,” Natalie said. But our website – http://www.1millionwomen.com.au – shows how you can cut carbon emissions daily,” Natalie added. (ANI)

Blame your asymmetrical ears for being a dud at dancing

London, Apr 11 (ANI): Got two left feet? Well, then instead of wasting money on dance classes, try to spend a few minutes measuring your ears, suggest researchers.

Researchers in Edinburgh have embarked upon a mass experiment which will be see both good and bad dancers. They have been invited to show off their skills before having their ears also subjected to scrutiny.

The study’s motive is to test the theory that the more symmetrical you are, the more likely you are to be a hit on the dance floor.

“We will be finding the best and worst dancers in the room and finding out how symmetrical their bodies are. Good dancers tend to be quite physically symmetrical – if you measure their ears they tend to be about the same size,” The Scotsman quoted researcher Professor Richard Wiseman, as saying.

The reasons behind the link between symmetry, dancing and attractiveness are complex. Symmetrical features, such as equally sized ears and eyes, are generally thought to be linked to genetic quality.

Previous studies suggest highly symmetrical people are generally rated as more attractive.

According to Wiseman, in evolutionary terms, attractiveness was a sign of a good genetic background, meaning someone was likely to produce the best and healthiest offspring.

“One theory about dance is that it is a kind of display of sexual fitness. It’s a way of saying to people we’re fit, we’ve got a good sense of rhythm.

“You expect good dancers to be displaying their fitness and people who are good bets from an evolutionary perspective are those who are quite symmetrical in terms of facial attraction,” he said.

For the study at the Edinburgh Science Festival event, good dancers will be asked to put themselves forward for a dance-off to find the five best among them. The five worst dancers, Wiseman said, would be easier to spot.

Then the ear measuring will commence. Wiseman said researchers suspected the best dancers would have the most symmetrical ears, while the worst dancers would be less equal – though there may only be a few millimetres difference.

“Pretty much every society dances and a lot of the time those dances are about attracting mates,” he added.(ANI)

10000 government ads a day turning Britain into the “ultimate nanny state”

London, Mar. 29 (ANI): Bombarded with more than 10,000 government advertisements every day, Britons are accusing the Gordon Brown government for turning the nation into the “ultimate nanny state”.

The Conservatives, who have set out plans to slash the government’s marketing budget by 250 million pounds to help pay for a freeze in council tax, accused Labour of wasting money.

“When you go to the cinema and watch an ad break, so many of the ads are now the government telling you what you can and cannot do. It really does feel like the ultimate nanny state,” Conservative leader Grant Shapps said

According to a new research by The Nielsen Company, messages from the state like –Stop smoking. Drink less. Learn new skills. Stop defrauding the benefit office. Claim tax credits. Wear a condom. Join the Army– were relayed to the population via television, radio, cinema, newspapers, magazines and billboards on more than 3.7 million occasions during 2008.

The government is now the biggest spender on advertising in the country.

The TaxPayers’ Alliance called the level of government advertising, “staggering”.

“We’re in the grip of a recession and advertising is simply not a priority when it comes to taxpayers’ money. The Government should stop heckling people and start providing decent public services at an affordable rate,” said Susie Squire, group’s campaign manager.
The Central Office of Information (COI), which handles almost all government advertising, insisted that information campaigns could, in fact, save money.

“In 2007/8, campaigns tackled important issues such as giving up smoking, Army recruitment, road safety and climate change. These are of huge social benefit and help generate overall savings to the public purse,” COI’s Deputy CEO Peter Buchanan said.

“HM Revenue and Custom’s campaign to persuade taxpayers to file their returns online generated 7.9 million pounds in savings for the department in 2005,” he added. (ANI)

Gwen Stefani, Gavin Rossdale bathe together – to avoid wasting water!

New Delhi, Mar 10 (ANI): Gwen Stefani’s husband Gavin Rossdale has candidly revealed that he and his wife bathe together in a bid to save water and help the environment.

Gavin, who has two sons with Gwen, Kingston, 2, and 6-month-old Zuma, insisted that every family should adopt the same technique to do their bit for the environment, reports The China Daily.

“All families should bathe together. It’s the least they could do!” Gavin said.

Meanwhile, Gwen revealed that she and Gavin have a new nickname for Kingston because he is currently going through a troublesome stage.

“Kingston is in that terrible twos. Gavin calls him Sid Vicious. He’s like, ‘You gave birth to Sid Vicious.’ He’s definitely got an attitude and Zuma is the opposite. He’s like this cool, laidback, easy-going guy – is that always how it is?” Gwen said. (ANI)

Stitching torn socks could help save the planet!

Edinburgh, March 9 (ANI): Scotland’s new environment minister has said that people should learn to stitch their torn socks, among learning other traditional activities from their elders, in order to lead greener lifestyles and save the planet.

According to a report in The Scotsman, the advice by Roseanna Cunningham, the new environment minister, came as a survey revealed that people in Scotland saw the environment as a global issue rather than a local one.

The results of the Ipsos Mori survey of more than 3,000 Scots showed an equal number of people – 35 per cent – believed the economy and the environment were among the most important issues facing the world today.

However, just 12 per cent thought the environment was one of the most important issues facing Scotland.

“One of the challenges is for more people to understand that the Scottish environment is part and parcel of the global environment, and what happens elsewhere in the world is not unrelated to what happens in Scotland,” said Cunningham.

The new environment minister, who has never owned a car, tumble drier or dishwasher, said our grandparents could teach us how to lead greener lifestyles.

“Our grandparents would have done things automatically that we have long since stopped doing. They would have had the string bag, and they never would have dreamed of wasting food,” she said.

“Our grandparents didn’t waste things because they couldn’t afford to. In a sense, we have to relearn some of the behaviours that once upon a time would have been second nature,” she added.

According to Cunningham, it is time we become less materialistic.

“In the 1960s, 70s and 80s, you became defined by the possessions you had, and older things were considered shabby and linked to poverty,” she said.

“However, in actual fact, this shiny new, buy-everything-chuck-it-away society is the anomaly in history. It’s going to have turned out to be a very expensive anomaly in every way – for our climate, and for our pockets,” she added.

“So maybe we should be showing off the darned holes in our socks,” she further added.

Cunningham added that the problem was that some people would make fun of that idea.

“However, it’s actually making an important point – that we have got to a situation where a darned sock is seen as a failure, when in actual fact, we’ve got to see a darned sock now as an indicator of people who are taking some care not to be part of a throwaway society,” she said. (ANI)

Kapil Dev condemns BCCI for victimizing players joining ICL

Kapil Dev condemns BCCI for victimizing players joining ICL Former Indian Cricket team captain Kapil Dev condemns BCCI, while appearing before the registrar of Delhi High Court, for dragging his name in match fixing controversy in the court and lash out at cricket body for victimizing players joining ICL against its wishes.

The case was filed by the former all rounder, captain of world cup winning team of India, against BCCI, for stopping pension of players joining Indian Cricket League.

Kapil Dev said, “It is incorrect to say that the BCCI has not put any pressure on PSUs and other organizations in respect of their employees who have joined ICL. They
(former players) are under pressure.” He asked the court to direct government to release pensions and other benefits for former players keeping in mind the services they offer for promotion of game and country’s name at international level.

Obliquely indicating the role of Lalit Modi to victimize players, he said, “They are trying to be vindictive towards us. Only one section of the Board is trying to do that. Moreover, it is just one person, who is being vindictive towards us.”

Group Head of ICL, Himanshu Mody said that BCCI counsel is wasting court’s time by diverting attention to the actual matter, leveling charges of match fixing.

Tom Cruise giving potty training to daughter Suri!

Melbourne, Jan 9 (ANI): Tom Cruise along with wife Katie Holmes is giving potty training to daughter Suri.

Talking in a wide-ranging interview in Weekend Australian Magazine, the actor revealed that he sure knows his stuff.

Cruise revealed that he and Katie don’t use star charts and other reward systems for their 2-year-old daughter and instead prefer the potty-in-the-room technique, a popular approach that is relatively self-explanatory.

In fact, the couple find potty books, a class of toddler fiction where a happy ending is marked by both a conclusive fairytale romance and a successful bowel movement, quite helpful.

“The potty books are really good for getting them excited about it. You know, she’s taking the diaper off, getting ready,” The Australian quoted Cruise as saying in the interview with Christine Jackman.

And Cruise is hoping that, no matter how much time it takes, Suri would soon learn her potty-lessons.

“You can’t have that ‘it must happen now’ approach. Somehow that always ends up in wasting more time,” said Cruise has. (ANI)
