“Logan’s Run” on track with “28 Days Later” scribe

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Alex Garland, the writer behind the Danny Boyle-directed movies “28 Days Later…” and “Sunshine,” is in negotiations to tackle “Logan’s Run.”

Film

Although best remembered as the 1976 film starring Michael York, Jenny Agutter and Farrah Fawcett, “Run” began as a 1967 novel by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson; it’s the book, which had a greatly expanded world compared to the movie, that Warner Bros. is turning to.

The studio has long been trying to get a movie version off the ground, and late last month began talking with commercials veteran Carl Rinsch to come aboard as director.

“Logan’s Run” is set in a future society that demands the death of everyone upon reaching a certain age. Anyone who veers from that destiny is dubbed a “runner” and is hunted by operatives known as Sandmen. Logan is a Sandman who is forced to go on the run.

Garland wrote the novel and screenplay for “The Beach,” launching a fruitful collaboration with Boyle that included 2002′s “28 Days Later…” and 2007′s “Sunshine.” He adapted Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel “Never Let Me Go” and is a producer on the upcoming Fox Searchlight drama starring Keira Knightley, Carey Mulligan and Andrew Garfield.

Writers hired for “Green Lantern 2″ and “Flash”

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – “Green Lantern” is a year away from release, but Warner Bros. already is starting development on a sequel.

Film

The studio has hired Greg Berlanti, Michael Green and Marc Guggenheim, all of whom worked on the “Lantern” screenplay, to write a treatment for the second installment.

The trio will also write the treatment for the silver-screen incarnation of “The Flash.”

Under the deal, they would then go on to write the screenplay for one of the two projects, though which one has not been determined.

“Lantern” is shooting in New Orleans under the direction of Martin Campbell with Ryan Reynolds starring as the emerald ring-wielding DC Comics superhero who is part of an intergalactic police force known as the Green Lantern Corps.

Development on a second installment this far out from a movie’s release date is rare, signaling the studio’s confidence in what it sees so far.

Berlanti, creator of “Everwood,” recently directed the feature “Life as We Know it,” starring Katherine Heigl, and is a showrunner on ABC’s “Brothers and Sisters.” He co-created “Eli Stone” with Guggenheim, who is exec producing ABC’s upcoming superhero drama “No Ordinary Family,” starring Michael Chiklis. Green worked with Berlanti on “Everwood.”

ThunderCats, Ho! Warner Bros. Consumer Products and Bandai America Incorporated Team Up for Inspired Product Line Based on Pop Culture Classic ThunderCats

ThunderCats Roars Back Into the Mainstream with Fresh Toys, New Cartoon Network
Episodes
BURBANK & CYPRESS, Calif.–(Business Wire)–
Warner Bros. Consumer Products (WBCP) announced today a powerhouse partnership
with Bandai America Incorporated, as the global master toy licensee for the
animated series, ThunderCats. Under the new agreement, Bandai and their
international affiliates will create and distribute products worldwide that will
complement both the classic brand property, as well as Cartoon Network`s fresh
take on the animated series, with new television episodes set to air in 2011.

“With their legacy of cultivating fun and fresh play experiences for beloved
character properties, Bandai is the ideal master toy license for ThunderCats,”
said Brad Globe, president, Warner Bros. Consumer Products. “We are thrilled to
team up and introduce the ThunderCats property to a new generation of fans.”

“ThunderCats have been a cult pop culture phenomenon for the past 25 years, and
Bandai America looks forward to developing modern and engaging toys for these
beloved characters,” said Masayuki Matsuo, chairman and chief executive officer,
Bandai America Incorporated. “Through the Bandai America and Warner Bros.
Consumer Products partnership, die-hard devotees as well as a new generation of
fans will be introduced to quality, innovative toys that will create magical
playtime experiences capturing the adventurous spirit of the brand.”

An all-new animated series, based on the iconic 1980s action classic,
ThunderCats, is currently in production at Warner Bros. Animation. The new
ThunderCats, a 21st century reimagining of the series that will air on Cartoon
Network, will appeal to viewers who have loved the characters all their lives as
well as young newcomers to the franchise. A sweeping tale combining swords and
science and boasting ferocious battles with the highest of stakes, the grand
origin story of Prince Lion-O`s ascension to the throne – and of those who would
thwart his destiny at any cost – takes on epic dimensions in this sharp new
telling. As the forces of good and evil battle each other in the quest for the
fabled Stones of Power, Lion-O and his champions learn valuable lessons of
loyalty, honor and mortality in every episode.

ThunderCats is executive produced by Sam Register (“Teen Titans,” “Ben 10,”
“Batman: The Brave and the Bold”). Michael Jelenic (“Batman: The Brave and the
Bold,” “Wonder Woman”) and Ethan Spaulding (“Avatar: The Last Airbender”) are
the producers. The series marks a creative collaboration between Warner Bros.
Animation and Studio4°C, one of the most vibrant animation studios in Japan.

Debuting in 1985, the ThunderCats roared onto the broadcast air waves and
created feline frenzy with their band of cat-like heroes from the planet
Thundera. Behind their fearless leader Lion-O, the ThunderCats strove to protect
their new home on Third Earth and their headquarters, Cat`s Lair, from the
Mutants of Plunn-Darr. The ThunderCats pop culture phenomenon had its paws sunk
deeply not only in television, but also toylines, apparel and comic books.
Twenty-five years later, through the Warner Bros. Consumer Products and Bandai
America collaboration, the beloved brand is poised to make a new audience of
kids feel the magic and hear the roar once again.

Charlie Sheen to stay on ”Two and a Half Men” for two more years

Washington, May 18 (ANI): Charlie Sheen has extended his association with hit TV show ‘Two and a Half Men’ for another two years, it has emerged.

The actor reportedly demanded around 2 million dollars an episode. Warner Bros. initially offered substantially less than half that amount, but went up considerably when the actor did not agree.

“Charlie is very happy,” TMZ quoted a source, as saying.

Meanwhile, Sheen released a statement, saying: “To put a fitting end on the two-and-one-half months of whirlwind speculation, I”m looking forward to returning to my CBS home on Monday nights.”(ANI)

UPDATE 1-’Date Night’ ekes out disputed box office win

LOS ANGELES, April 11 (Reuters) – Television comics Steve Carell and Tina Fey scored a disputed win at the North American box office on Sunday, as “Date Night” narrowly beat last weekend’s champion “Clash of the Titans.”

The duo’s romantic comedy earned $27.1 million during its first weekend, said its distributor 20th Century Fox, coming in at the high end of pundits’ forecasts.

“Clash of the Titans” grossed $26.9 million, said Warner Bros. But the studio said it estimated a $26 million weekend for “Date Night.” Two rival studios also gave the edge to “Clash,” while another said the race was too close to call.

“It does seem a little bizarre that they squeezed it out,” Warner Bros. domestic distribution president Dan Fellman said of Fox’s estimate. Fox declined to respond.

A clear winner will emerge on Monday when the studios release final data for the Friday-to-Sunday weekend.

Box office estimates are based on executives poring through the history books to research the trajectories of similarly themed films at the same time of year. The Sunday component is particularly open to revision since the studios release their three-day estimates early in the day.

Either way, the sales for both films were at the high end of industry forecasts. Pundits had predicted “Date Night” would open in the $23-27 million range, with “Clash” seen earning about $25 million.

Internationally, it was no competition. “Clash” led the field for a second weekend with sales of $54 million from 31 countries, taking its total to $119.2 million.

The mythological epic opened at No. 1 in Russia, France and Germany, Warner Bros. said. “Date Night” earned a modest $7.1 million in 35 markets, led by a $2 million contribution from a No. 3 opening in Australia, Fox said.

‘DATE NIGHT’ EARNS $7.1 MILLION OVERSEAS

Carell (“The Office”) and Fey (“30 Rock”) star in “Date Night” as a suburban couple pursued by crooks in a case of mistaken identity. Shawn Levy (“Night at the Museum”) directed the critically acclaimed film. Fox, a unit of News Corp (NWSA.O), said the $55 million movie skewed to older couples.

“Clash of the Titans,” the latest action film to jump on the lucrative 3D bandwagon in the wake of the success of “Avatar,” has earned $110.5 million after its first 10 days. It lost 56 percent of its opening-weekend audience, a slightly smaller drop than pundits had forecast. Warner Bros. is a unit of Time Warner Inc (TWX.N).

Former champion “How to Train Your Dragon” was a close No. 3 with $25.4 million, falling just 13 percent from last weekend. The DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc (DWA.O) production has earned $133.9 million after three weekends.

Rounding out the top five were filmmaker Tyler Perry’s sequel “Why Did I Get Married Too?” with $11 million, and the Miley Cyrus drama “The Last Song” with $10 million. Both in their second weekends, they have tallied $48.5 million and $42.4 million, respectively.

“Why Did I Get Married Too?” was released by Lionsgate, a unit of Lions Gate Entertainment Corp (LGF.N). “The Last Song” was released by Walt Disney Pictures, a unit of Walt Disney Co (DIS.N). (Reporting by Dean Goodman; editing by Paul Simao and Todd Eastham)

Coming soon: Harry Potter theme park

London, Sep 16 (ANI): Harry Potter fans can soon experience the thrills of the adventures of the hugely popular boy wizard, for a new theme park based on the hit franchise is set to open next year.

The theme park, called ‘The Wizarding Worlds of Harry Potter’, is set to open in spring 2010 at Universal Studios, the Orlando resort has announced.he park is being developed in coordination with J.K. Rowling, the author of the immensely successful books, which have been adapted into films.

Recreating the fabled Hogwarts school that Potter and his friends attend, as well as the nearby village of Hogsmeade, the theme park promises a “completely immersive environment” for visitors.

“All of the action and adventures of Harry Potter’s world will come to life here at Universal Orlando Resort,” the Telegraph quoted Tom Williams, chairman and CEO of Universal Parks and Resorts, as saying.

“The Wizarding World of Harry Potter will be unlike any other experience on earth,” he added.

In fact, visitors at a replica of the Three Broomsticks, one of Hogsmeade’s popular pubs, will be treated to traditional British fare and have the chance to sip on Butterbeer – Potter’s tipple of choice.

The park will also feature theme rides, including the ‘Flight of the Hippogriff’, which will simulate a training flight on the magical, quick-to-offend creature.

Those who lobed the fast-paced wizard sport Quidditch, will also have a chance to participate in a simulated Triwizard Tournament, as well as examine Quidditch equipment and even the elusive Golden Snitch at several Hogsmeade shops.

“Harry Potter continues to spark the imaginations of fans of all ages and we really have seen the anticipation continue to build for The Wizarding World of Harry Potter,” said Brad Globe, president of Warner Bros. Consumer Products. (ANI)

Director Gilliam relieved he was rejected by ‘Harry Potter’ producers

Washington, September 8 (ANI): Terry Gilliam is relieved that he failed to become the director of the first ‘Harry Potter’ movie, for he would hate to work in a film “factory”.

He was author J. K. Rowling’s first choice to direct ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ in 2000.

However, Warner Bros. studios snubbed him, and decided to go with Chris Columbus.

Gilliam was so infuriated by the then studio bosses’ decision that he denounced Columbus’ work as “terrible” and “pedestrian”.

However, the former ‘Monty Python’ legend is now relieved that he was overlooked, as he insists that he could not have handled studio bosses meddling with his work over revenue fears.

“That was one of my lucky moments. I would have gone crazy. It’s a f**king factory, working on Harry Potter. It is. The studios are staking everything on the success of those movies,” Contactmusic quoted him as having told Total Film magazine.

“It was way too expensive.Too much at stake. So they (studio bosses) interfere. It’s about serving something higher than yourself. It’s the film. The film is God and I’m worshipping… while I’m making it I become a zealot.

Basically, I’m a like a suicide bomber when it comes to my films!” he added. (ANI)
