Police seize hundreds of stolen NATO wireless sets in Quetta

Quetta, Sep 10(ANI): Quetta police has arrested three people and seized hundreds of wireless sets, which were stolen from NATO supply containers, during a raid on a warehouse in Pakistan’s Spini area.

Earlier, militants had burnt eight NATO tankers in Quetta and fled with the biggest haul of wireless devices.

The Superintendent of Police of Saddar, Dr Farrukh, said that police carried out the raid after a tip-off and said that apart from the wireless sets, the seized items include spare parts of wireless sets, computers and x-ray machines, Dawn reports.

Dr Farrukh further said that over the past years, pilferage of NATO containers was routine on the Quetta-Chaman highway. (ANI)

Woman raped by US Fritzl 33yrs ago says she’s relieved he’s behind bars

London, Aug 31 (ANI): A woman who was raped by ‘American Fritzl’ Phillip Garrido 33 years ago says she is relieved that the ‘monster’ is behind bars again.

Katherine Callaway, 58, had an encounter with Garrido in 1976 when he handcuffed and gagged her, reports the Sun.

He drove the casino worker, 25 at the time, to a Lake Tahoe warehouse with a ‘rape room’ filled with porn, sex toys, a film projector and wine.

A Nevada cop heard her yelling as he investigated his Californian plates.

Garrido served just 11 years of a 50-year sentence at Leavenworth Jail, Kansas.

Now, Katherine says that she’s ‘overwhelmingly relieved’ that Garrido is in jail again.

A detective involved in her case said Garrido should have been ‘locked up forever’. (ANI)

Archaeologists unearth British General’s 19th century command post in Portugal

Lisbon, August 24 (ANI): A team of archeologists has unearthed what is believed to have been the headquarters of Luso-British troop commander General Wellington in the early 19th century, in a dig inside the Alqueidao Forte in Portugal.

Located between Mafra and Torres Vedras, the fort is thought to have sheltered General Wellington’s troops serving the Torres Vedras line during the French invasions, between 1807 and 1814.

According to a report in The Portugal News Online, the General’s private quarters, a store room, a warehouse and a weapons locker were defined during the excavation.

The division had been previously outlined in maps, but this is the first time excavations were attempted to unearth them.

Of the weaponry storeroom, archeologist Artur Rocha said that “strategically, it is one of the most important points within the fort as it offered privileged views in comparison to other war weaponry storerooms and the cannons positioned on the Torres Vedras line.”

“That is why we believe the room was General Wellington’s command post,” he said.

The ‘Torres Vedras Line’ was made up of 152 forts built between Torres Verdras and Vila Franca de Xira, between 1809 and 1812, with the intention of defending Lisbon from invading troops.

The weaponry storeroom that was recently uncovered is said to be one of the largest identified to date.

The good state of conservation that the storeroom was found in has allowed the archeologists to study construction techniques and materials that were used for construction at that time. (ANI)

Oz granny gets rogue tenant’s $1.3m toxic clean-up bill!

Melbourne, April 12 (ANI): An Australian grandmother has been ordered to pay a 1.3-million dollar bill after her absconding rogue tenant left behind 300 drums of toxic waste at her warehouse.

According to Ruth Browne’s children, Alf Browne and Bev Olbrick, the tenant had violated his EPA licence after piling 50 tonnes of dry cleaning chemical and waste on the premises as against the 1.2 tonnes guideline.

Alf claimed even though environmental regulator was timely informed about the breach, yet it was demanded that the 82-year-old, owner of the premises in Ebden St, Moorabbin in Melbourne, bear the clean-up bill.

Bev added that her distraught mother was ready to face the bars.

“She’s prepared to go to jail rather than pay the bill,” News.com.au quoted her as saying.

David Davis, opposition spokesman for the environment, has laid the entire blame on the EPA, saying it failed to fulfil its responsibility.

He said: “Because of the EPA’s failure to act at an early point, failure to enforce regulations and failure to guarantee that toxic chemicals were not stored in capacities above what was allowed by permits, a landlord is now faced with a very difficult position.

“The landlord here is being told she is responsible, despite her telling the EPA at an early point that they needed to act against a tenant who was breaking the law.”

“What is the point of having licences for the storage of toxic waste if the conditions of those licences are not enforced and breaches not prosecuted?” (ANI)

Danielle Lloyd sues phone company for download of explicit photos

London, Mar 27 (ANI): British glamour model Danielle Lloyd is suing a phone company after it was discovered that one of its employers had allegedly downloaded explicit photos from her mobile.

Lloyd, 25, said that she had left her old phone at her local branch of Carphone Warehouse after buying a new one, so that data could be transferred.

As per a statement submitted in High Court, the former Miss England said that one of the staff viewed the images and made copies of them.

She is now suing Carphone Warehouse and employee Deepak Jagpal, who has been accused of taking copies of the pictures, including intimate surgery shots.

The incident took place last September, and the company said that it even apologized to Lloyd as soon as it came to know about it, and fired Jagpal.

“The download of customer content is entirely unacceptable and we can confirm that this content was not published,” the Daily Express quoted a spokesman for the company as saying.

“When the matter was brought to our attention we immediately conducted an investigation and the employee is no longer working within the business.

“Their actions are not indicative of our usual standard of service and we absolutely apologise to Ms Lloyd,” he added.

Lloyd’s writ makes a claim of up to 50,000 pounds for breach of contract, and invasion of privacy.(ANI)

Moldova opposition: Communists buying votes with humanitarian aid

Chisinau – A Moldovan opposition party accused the ruling Communists of using western-donated humanitarian aid to buy votes in upcoming parliament elections, the Infotag news agency reported Friday.

A statement from the Our Moldova Alliance (AMN) claimed government officials were handing out to potential voters food and goods sent the former Soviet republic in 2007 and 2008 by Europeans concerned with droughts and floods hitting Moldova at the time.

The AMN is Moldova’s top opposition political party. The Communist Party of Moldova (CPM) currently holds a strong majority in parliament, with new elections scheduled April 5.

Potential voters nationwide “are being bought with western donations”, the opposition claimed in part.

Residents of the village Brichen in a meeting with Communist party member Marian Lupu received bags of foreign-donated food drawn from a provincial warehouse operated by the government, according to the report.

Other handouts in villages across the country have included sewing machines, household appliances, repair of village infrastructure, and cash handouts all coming from aid sent Moldova by donor nations since 2006, the AMN statement said.

There was no immediate response from Communist Party spokesmen.

Moldova’s opposition parties have for years accused the ruling Communists of manipulating state-controlled services and material supplies, in order to prop up popularity.

Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin, head of the Moldova’s Communist Party, has denied the allegations, saying delivery of government goods and services are proof the Communists are managing the country properly.

Europe’s poorest nation, Moldova was badly hit by drought and then floods in 2005 and 2006. (dpa)

Ex-Tesco employee becomes Britain’s first eBay millionaire

London, Mar 16 (ANI): A former Tesco employee has become Britain’s first eBay millionaire.

Mark Radcliffe has made the fortune by selling electrical gadgets like iPod holders and remote control toys for less than 15 pounds.

Radcliffe was 21 when he started his business, First2Save, from his back bedroom in his spare time.

Ten years later, he owns a Ferrari sports car, and has an annual turnover of more than three million pounds, which makes him the first ever eBay millionaire.

Radcliffe began by selling items like mobile phone accessories and computer cables, and now vends a range of 3,700 items.

He has also employed a staff of 19 people, and operates from a 10,000 sq ft warehouse.

“We keep focussed on popular consumables. Our biggest sellers are all items with a value of less than 15 pounds – accessories for iPod’s and mobile phones, gadgets, and electronic toys – low value goods with a high volume and decent profit margin,” the Telegraph quoted Radcliffe as saying.

“When I started I was very young with no commitments, and no real financial backing, so I had to buy small products that I could buy in cheaply and sell quickly.

“I started selling mobile phone accessories in 1999 from my own website. Then eBay came along and that gave me the opportunity to reach a much wider customer-base.

“I’m constantly re-investing the money back into the business, so we can continue to grow.

“Without wanting to sound over-confident there is every chance that we can become the number one eBay seller in the world in the next 2 years,” he added.

He now plans to move into premises three times bigger, and increase his staff to 34.

He also wants to become the world’s biggest eBay trader by selling 50,000 items per month. (ANI)

Jackie Chan to donate collection of historical Chinese houses to university

Washington, Feb 14 (ANI): Actor Jackie Chan is set to donate his collection of historical Chinese houses, said to be worth 67 million dollars, to a new university in Singapore.

Chan, 54, owns seven wooden homes, which date back to the country’s Ming and Qing dynasties, and also has a decorative performing stage.

The whole collection is currently housed at a Hong Kong warehouse.

The martial arts expert is making the donation to the educational establishment, which is due to open in 2010, with hopes that the structures will be appreciated by students for many years to come.

“He loves Singapore. He thinks it’s the best place to donate his houses to provide education and let the people appreciate them,” Contactmusic quoted Chan’s property manager Simon Kwan as saying.

The country’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, George Yeo, added: “I am very excited about the offer as it comes at a time when we are actively exploring a tie-up between our new university and a leading Chinese university. The Chinese houses would be a wonderful symbol of this proposed partnership.” (ANI)

UK’s Marks and Spencer to sack 1,000 employees

London, Jan.6 (ANI): UK fashion retailer Marks and Spencer will announce the sacking of 1,000 employees tomorrow after experiencing dire Christmas trading.

Several hundred more from the head office and support functions are also to be sacked.

Debenhams and Next are also expected today to unveil their worst Christmas performances in recent history.

The fashion chains Principles, Oasis, Karen Millen and Warehouse – all owned by Mosaic – have had an emergency restructuring team sent in from Deloitte.

According to The Times, these stores employ about 5,000 staff whose jobs will be at risk unless a new lender is found to refinance the business.

Waterford Wedgwood, the china and glassware company, went into receivership yesterday, threatening nearly 2,000 British jobs.

Adams, which went into administration after Christmas, shed another 850 staff by closing all 111 children’s clothing shops and Passion for Perfume, a chain of 46 stores, collapsed with the loss of all 185 staff.

The last 197 Wool-worth stores will close today, taking its total losses to 27,000, while

Monsoon Accessorize is facing a revolt from suppliers after it asked manufacturers to cut prices by 5 per cent.

Sales over Christmas at Marks and Spencer are thought to have fallen by 8.5 per cent once new stores are taken out of the equation. M and S, which last year made workers’ redundancy packages less generous, has cut investment recently to reduce its three billion pound debt.

Unemployment is now rising at a faster rate than during the 1990s recession. This week’s job news will pile more pressure on the Bank of England to cut interest rates on Thursday from two per cent to a 314-year record low. (ANI)
