The day is observed to generate awareness in the country among all sections of people, about the danger of terrorism, violence and its dangerous effect on the people, the society and the country as a whole.

West Bengal authorities gear up to contain bird flu

Siliguri (WB), Mar 1(ANI): Health authorities in West Bengal today said they are working in tandem with civic authorities to spread awareness about clean husbandry practices to counter bird flu.

Over 5,000 birds have been culled here so far after cases of H5N1 strain of bird flu sent to a testing lab in Bhopal turned out positive.

The authorities said they have not been able to spread 100 percent awareness among the people inspite of best efforts.

“We are trying to spread awareness, but from our experiences in the field, we find that the owners of hens are not ready to take part as their sentimentality is attached to it.

The culling team had to forcefully take the hens. We are taking the help of civic agencies, and they are cooperating,” said Kastury Sengupta, the acting sub divisional officer of Siliguri.

Voluntary organisations in the state are of the view that poor husbandry practices are responsible for a recurrence of the virus.
“Repeated outbreak of bird flu is to be attributed to bad husbandry practices in poultry farms across the country. We have a 40-page report that’s an investigation report which tells how bad husbandry practices, how filth in the farms, how conditions that are badly maintained in the farms which are responsible for the outbreak of bird flu,” said Nikunj Sharma, the chief of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

The officials have also put a ban on the buying and selling of hens or other poultry products within a span of three kilometers.

Bird flu first broke out in India in 2006. Millions of chicken and ducks have been culled since to contain the virus. (ANI)

Ford reaches deal with union on health care fund

Ford reaches deal with union on health care fund New York – Ford Motor Company and union leaders reached an agreement Monday designed to lower health care costs in the ailing US car industry.

The deal would allow the carmaker to make contributions to the United Auto Workers (UAW) health care plan for retirees with up to 50 per cent stock instead of cash, a move the manufacturer said would help it meet its obligations. Ford owes 13.6 billion dollars to the Voluntary Employee Beneficiary Association, as the health care trust is known.

“The agreements, if finalized, will allow Ford to become competitive with foreign automakers’ US manufacturing operations, and are critical to our efforts to operate through the current deep economic downturn without accessing government loans,” said Joe Hinrichs, Ford vice president for global manufacturing and labour affairs.

UAW president Ron Gettelfinger said the deal would “protect jobs for UAW members by ensuring the long-term viability of the company.”

The company is the first of the three US carmakers to reach a deal on the health plan with the union and the agreement could pave the way for similar deals with General Motors Corp and Chrysler LLC.

Ford is the only company of the Big Three carmakers that did not receive a total of 17.4 billion dollars in emergency government loans.

GM and Chrysler last week submitted plans to the government to slash labour costs with about 50,000 job cuts, close manufacturing plants and dealerships and focus more on their core brands. The carmakers have until March 31 to show the government they can survive and the Obama administration is currently reviewing the plans.

The Wall Street Journal reported Monday that the Treasury Department was beginning to line up at least 40 billion dollars in bankruptcy loans for the carmakers should it be needed. (dpa)

Taiwan mulls cutting armed forces

Taipei – Taiwan on Tuesday admitted it is mulling cutting its armed forces, but denied reports that the cuts could be as much as one-third of its troops.

“Regarding the adjustment of the size of our military forces, it is still being planned. We have not made a decision yet and all possibilities are under consideration,” the Broadcasting Corp of China quoted Ho An-chi, a Defence Ministry official in charge of personnel planning, as saying.

The statement came in response to Monday’s local news reports that the government was planning to cut the armed forces from the current 275,000 troops to 180,000.

The reduction, to be carried out over four years, is due to the high cost of recruiting voluntary conscripts since 2003, Taiwan newspapers said Monday.

Public reaction to the report was mixed, with some people fearing it will weaken Taiwan’s defence against China while others said there was no need to maintain a large armed force.

Lawmaker Shuai Hua-min said that during the Cold War days, Taiwan built a large military hoping to recover the mainland, lost by the Chinese Nationalists to the Communists at the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949.

“But since there is no imminent danger of war, it is the best time to make the restructuring,” he said. (dpa)

‘Voluntary work improves young people’s sex lives’

London, Jan 19 (ANI): A British politician has said that voluntary work could improve young people’s sex lives.

The comments made by Tim Loughton, Tory MP and Shadow Minister for Children, has now come under fire.
Loughton made the statement during a Parliamentary question and answer session on funding for volunteer groups.

“We are all well aware of the excellent work voluntary groups do to promote social cohesion and to engage young people in their communities, and of the excellent qualities volunteering brings. It promotes self-esteem and a survey showed 17 per cent of 18- to 24-year-olds said volunteering had improved their sex lives,” the Telegraph quoted him as saying.

However, Loughton’s comments drew criticism from volunteer programmes, who claim he is trivialising the contribution of volunteers.

A spokesman for Project V, a youth programme at the University of Sussex said: “Students have identified a variety of reasons for wanting to volunteer, from wanting to make a contribution to the community to having fun doing something other than studying.

“Improving their sex life has never been raised as a motivating force to volunteer.

“It seems a strange and inappropriate question to ask people in the first place, something which trivialises their motivations and intentions behind volunteering.

“It is also questionable as to how engaging in volunteering can impact upon somebody’s sex life,” he added.

Loughton, the MP for East Worthing and Shoreham, defended his speech claiming that he only mentioned sex as a ploy.

“It was a very noisy House and I mentioned it as a device to grab people’s attention,” he said. (ANI)

Ansari calls on Indians to cherish their cultural heritage and diversity

Amritsar, Jan.12 (ANI): Vice President M.Hamid Ansari on Monday said that Indians live in a plural society and should cherish their cultural heritage and diversity.

In a speech delivered after inaugurating the 14th National Youth Festival here, Ansari said this diversity presents itself in terms of regions, languages, religions, food habits and in a multitude of other ways.

“Yet each of these is Indian and is equally authentic. The challenge, then, is to think Indian and act Indian within the framework of this unity and diversity,” he added.

He also presented the National Youth Award-2007-08 instituted by Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to the individual and Voluntary Organizations in recognition to their services to the community on this occasion.

He said: “A festival is a festive occasion, generally though not exclusively associated with festivity. This festival brings together about 4000 young persons from all parts of our country, and some from abroad, gives them an invaluable opportunity for a few days to live, work and think together. In doing so, they should recall an observation of Swami Vivekanand. “The world”, he said, “is the great gymnasium where we come to make ourselves strong”.

He further said that “India is a nation of young people. Around 70 percent of our population – about 430 million in absolute terms – consists of those who are below the age of 35. The future of the country, its hopes, aspirations and achievements, rests with the youth and this demographic asset has to be harnessed for the good of the nation.”

“We are facing multiple challenges in areas of education, employment, health and gender equality. We are confronting the scourge of terrorism. Each of these affects our development effort and the future of our youth; none can be addressed successfully without the active cooperation of young people,” he added.

He concluded his address with another motto of Swami Vivekanand: “Take up one idea. Make that one idea your life. – think of it, dream of it, live on that idea. This is the way to success”. (ANI)

Californian woman raises troop morale and funds with ‘Pin-Ups for Vets’ calendar

Washington, Jan 8 (ANI): A woman from California has found a novel way of raising the morale of troops, and also funds for U.S. military hospitals with her third annual “Pin-Ups For Vets” calendar.

Gina Elise, 26, herself poses for the calendars, wearing costumes that were popular among America”s fighting men in the 1940s, with profits from the sales providing assistance to the hospitals.

“About two years ago I started hearing stories of wounded soldiers that were coming back to under funded hospitals, so I just decided that I really wanted to do something to help out,” Fox News quoted her as saying.

“I‘ve always been a huge fan of the pin-up era, so I figured I can sort of combine my love for this era to not only use the money for the hospitals but also help boost morale with the calendars themselves,” she said.

The UCLA grad started spreading the word about the project in hopes of enlisting some help, and takes time to mail her orders in a care package, or delivers them herself if they are for those recovering in U.S. hospitals.

“I go there and I ask things like their name and their birthday and show them their birth month on the calendar. A lot of these veterans don’t get visitors, so to see their reaction when I show up is really rewarding,” she said.

Loreleye Winn, Director of Voluntary Resources at San Diego’s Veterans Administration Hospital, recalled one of Elise’s visits.

“She was dressed like a ”40s pin-up lady and she passed out some calendars to the patients and went around to their bedsides,” Winn said.

“They really enjoyed it and it just was a pleasure to have someone come in and visit,” she added. (ANI)
