Cleaning Yamuna is not easy at all

New Delhi, May 26 — The Interceptor Sewer Network will bring sewage to 17 sewage treatment plants in Delhi but after treatment, the water quality will only be fit for horticultural purposes, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has conceded in an RTI reply. The biological oxygen demand of the water to be discharged into Yamuna after treatment is a high 11-12 milligrams per litre, whereas, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), it has to be under 5 milligrams per litre to be “fit for bathing”.

Official records also show that Engineers India Limited, which is carrying out the project, will be intercepting only 108 of the 231 sub-drains that bring sewage into Yamuna. This is apart from the 22 large drains, like Najafgarh, Shahadara and the supplementary drain.

According to the Delhi government, this ambitious project is the last solution left to clean the dead river after all else has failed. As much as Rs 1,500 crore has already been spent over the years on some project or the other, attempting to clean the Yamuna.

“We do not have the technology in the Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) to turn sewage into water fit for bathing,” admitted Santosh Vaidya, Additional CEO, Delhi Jal Board (DJB). “But from being very dirty, we can say the Yamuna will be less dirty.

” In other words, as much as Rs 1,357 crore of public money is being spent to lay a few pipes and bring sewage into STPs. “But as far as cleaning the Yamuna is concerned, that is not happening.

Not with this project,” said Himanshu Thakkar, head of South Asian Network of Dams, Rivers and People. The DJB claims the cost of total cleaning of the water is too steep.

“While now, the cost of treatment is around 1Rs .5 crore per million gallons per day, that for high-end sophisticated treatment of the sewage is about Rs 7 crore,” Vaidya says.

“To fund that, we need a policy decision,” Vaidya adds. “They are misleading the public into believing that this huge project will clean the Yamuna,” said Vinod Jain of NGO Tapas, which has been fighting a legal battle with the authorities to clean up the Yamuna for years.

“But what they are actually doing is wasting thousands of crores to just lay a few pipes,” Jain added. What is the project? The idea is to tap all the sewage generated in Delhi and channel it into the existing 17 sewage treatment plants.

Cost: Rs 1357 crore What is wrong? The project underestimates the amount of sewage Delhi generates, thus upsetting the whole theory behind catching all the sewage before discharging it into Yamuna. It treats only 108 of the 231 subdrains that carry sewage parallel to the main drains.

It will not treat the entire 3800 million litres per day of sewage Delhi generates. What can be done with Rs 1357 crore? Rs 1357 crore is 4 times the cost of Chandraayan-India’s mission to moon.

It is twice the cost of building a new terminal at the IGI Airport.

Kahlon-Chitkara tiff reaches cricket ground

The ongoing tussle between RTI activist Sarbjeet Singh Kahlon and Ludhiana Cricket Association general secretary Vinod Chitkara spilled over to the cricket ground at PAU on Sunday, after Kahlon allegedly abused two players on the ground.

Kahlon and Chitkara have been at war over the issue of election of players for the under-15 team. Kahlon’s son, too, is a cricketer and was not selected for the team, which according to him, was done to accommodate Chitkara’s son. Kahlon even showed some documents to prove that Chitkara’s son was over-aged and did not qualify for the team and that he was using his position to get his son selected.

The police had to be called in to control the situation. The ruckus broke out when Chandigarh was playing Ludhiana in a domestic cricket match. It has been learnt that Kahlon abused players Rahul Singla and Varun Chitkara, who lodged a complaint with the umpire, who took up the matter with game referee Jasvir Singh. Singh, meanwhile, said, “The police are looking into the matter. We will also report the issue to the Punjab Cricket Association.”

Kahlon rubbished the entire issue and said, “The matter is quite the contrary. I reached the ground around 11.30 in the morning. Ajay Singla and his son Varun approached me and started abusing me. I called in the PCA and seeing the police, they backed off. The moment the police returned, these two again began abusing and manhandling me. I went to the police station and recorded my statement . These two never even reached the police station.”

He said, “Like Vinod’s son, Ajay Singla”s son, too, was found over-aged for the under-19 team last year. Chitkara is already facing an FIR filed by me. Moreover, had I abused the boys, why no one else heard the abuses? The umpire or the referee did not hear anything. This shows the complaint is completely false.”

Wanted Maoist leader arrested in Bihar

Gaya, Sep 5 (ANI): Bihar police arrested a Maoist leader, wanted in two-dozen cases of murder, robbery and kidnapping here on Friday.

Vinod Mehta alias Marandi was the founder of Revolutionary Communist Centre (RCC), officials said.

Marandi, along with two of his associates, was arrested from Sherghati town.

Officials said Marandi was earlier a self-styled commander of Maoist Communist Centre (MCC), before snapping ties and founding his own outfit.

“Earlier he was a sub-zonal commander of MCC. He snapped his links with MCC. When he got out of jail, he formed a new terrorist organisation called RCC (Revolutionary Communist Centre),” said Ranjan Kumar, deputy superintendent of police, Sherghati town.

The central government banned and formally labelled Maoist insurgents as a terrorist group, hoping it would give security forces more enforcement powers after the rebels briefly created a ‘liberated zone’ in Lalgarh region of West Bengal recently.

Some experts said the ban would have little impact in the battle against an estimated 22,000 Maoist combatants. (ANI)

Gujarat govt. to bring stringent law to punish spurious liquor dealers

Ahmedabad, July 15(ANI): The Gujarat government on Wednesday declared that it would soon bring a new law having a provision to punish dealers of spurious liquor with seven years in imprisonment to capital punishment.

The State government has come into action following wide uproar over the death of 152 people in Ahmedabad due to drinking illegally brewed liquor.

Gujarat police have so far arrested 100 people in connection with the incident. The police suspect that there may be more of the spurious liquor being consumed. It hopes to crackdown on the sellers through the bootleggers arrested on Monday.

Vinod Chauhan, the key suspect wanted for the hooch tragedy, has reportedly fled the State. He was allegedly involved in brewing the spurious liquor in Gujarat’s Kheda district, which was supplied to different parts of Ahmedabad, said police officials.

Harishankar Kahar and Dadu Charra, who bought over 1,000 litres of the spurious liquor from Chauhan and supplied it to Majoor Gam and Odhav, have also been arrested along with six other bootleggers, who allegedly aided them in distributing the hooch. (ANI)

Killer’ son wanted flat for himself

MUMBAI: When his aged mother refused to transfer a Rs 25-lakh flat to him, Goregaon resident Deepak Bhosle allegedly murdered her with a iron
pestle. The police traced Deepak to a garden in Aarey Colony on Thursday, where he was hiding after the incident.

Asha (60), who was hospitalised, succumbed to severe head injuries; her left earlobe was also torn during the attack. The police said Asha, a widow, lived in a rented room at Gomte Wadi with her sons Deepak (44) and Vinod (40), their wives and four children. Asha also has a daughter who is married and lives separately.

“Asha owned a room in an SRA project at Sahakarwadi in Goregaon (E). She wanted a share of it for both her sons, but Deepak wanted the room all for himself. Deepak claimed that as he had brought up his siblings and educated them, he alone deserved the room. Asha did not agree with him and the duo had fights regularly,” deputy commissioner of police Ajit Patil said.

After one such argument on Tuesday night, Asha went to sleep. Around 5.30 am on Wednesday, Deepak walked up to her and hit her on the head with an iron pestle. Asha screamed in pain, waking up the others in the house. While Deepak fled, Asha’s younger daughter-in-law Vishakha took her to hospital. Her head was smashed and her clothes were soaked with blood. Within two hours of being admitted, Asha succumbed to her injuries.

The Bhosle family told the police that Asha died due to a fall in the bathroom. But a post-mortem revealed haemorrhage. “Deepak had threatened Vinod and Vishakha with dire consequences in the past. They were frightened and hesitated to even lodge a complaint against him,” a source said. A team of officials combed the neighbourhood and found Deepak hanging around a garden at Aarey. He was booked for murder.

While Deepak worked as an embroidery artisan, Vinod was unemployed; Vishakha worked as a domestic help. Deepak said he never intended to kill his mother.

DDA pulls down illegal restaurant

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) on Wednesday finally demolished Vasant Kunj’s Sahara restaurant, which had come up unauthorisedly on government land. The demolition comes close on the heels of Tuesday’s order by a city court to pull down the illegal structure.

The DDA counsel had informed the court that the demolition of the restaurant was essential to further widen Aruna Asaf Ali Road. DDA spokesperson Neemo Dhar said: “Following the court order, we have demolished the structure which had illegally come up on DDA land.

” The restaurant belonged to one Vinod Khatri, a builder allegedly involved in a multi-crore bribery scam. The same case had forced then sitting Delhi High Court judge Shamit Mukherjee to resign after his name cropped up in connection with the scam.

The land, situated at a prime location in Vasant Kunj, was earmarked for a road. Khatri had allegedly encroached on the land and built the restaurant there.

The CBI had charged Mukherjee with criminal conspiracy for favouring Khatri in the Azad Singh vs DDA case, which was related to the widening of the Aruna Asaf Ali Road. Khatri had initially misled the government, stating that they had constructed one tin shelter and two small rooms on the land.

But soon he converted the tin shelter into a sprawling restaurant.

Aamir Wants ‘3 Idiots’ To Break All ‘Ghajini’ Records!

Visibly upbeat after the record-breaking success of ‘Ghajini’, Bollywood perfectionist Aamir Khan aspires to woo the audience with the same results in all his upcoming movies.

While talking about his forthcoming much-awaited Rajkumar Hirani’s “3 Idiots”, the actor said, “Success is not in my hands. I can only follow my heart and work with all the sincerity and hard work that I always do. I would be happy if my next film 3 Idiots breaks all Ghajini records.”

Posting for the first time after the release of his worldwide grosser ‘Ghajini’, which earned around Rs 2 billion worldwide, Aamir also thanked his buffs for their overall support.

Talking about Ghajini’s stupendous BO collections, Aamir said, “I do not react to numbers. But they do indicate the success of the film. For me, the feeling that my hard work has been appreciated is priceless. It is because of director A R Murugadoss’s vision and script that the film has made a strong impact across the world.”

The multi-talented actor said he goes by his character, when it comes to choosing films.

He also said that it is not easy to define the potential of any film.

“I did Taare Zameen Par because I loved the story. I had no idea that it would do the business that it eventually did. It is very difficult to define the potential of any film. When I hear a script, I react as an audience. I was moved by the Tamil version of Ghajini in every aspect. The inner feeling cannot be described,” he said.

Aamir also said that Ghajini’s unbelievable success had pressurized him to deliver the same in his upcoming films.

Speaking about loosing his eight-pack abs, which he particularly developed for ‘Ghajini’, he pointed out, “I had to stretch myself to a limit. Losing the physique is also equally strenous. I have to sport a lean look for 3 Idiots and am in the process of losing weight.”

Aamir also revealed that he aims to work on a new version of the Hindu epic Mahabharata, eyeing the role of Lord Krishna that needs big preparations, research as well as commitment.

Produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, the film is based on Chetan Bhegat’s bestseller ‘Five Point Someone’ and also stars Sharman Joshi and R. Madhavan in the lead apart from Aamir.
