Hyundai executive vice president Lee Won-hee said the world’s No.5 car maker along with its affiliate Kia Motors Corp (000270.KS) saw sales growth in China slowing down slightly in the second half, although it would still be strong.

Hyundai expects to maintain strong growth with new models and is likely to exceed its business targets, Lee told investors. (Reporting by Cheon Jong-woo; Editing by Jonathan Hopfner)

Comparing The Walmart and P&G Supplier Sustainability Scorecards

This spring Procter and Gamble (P&G) rolled out a sustainability scorecard program for its suppliers. The program requests information on energy, carbon emissions, waste, and water.

Responses are graded on a 1 (“Far Exceeds Expectations”) to 5 (“Far Below Expectations”) scale. The effort initially involves a group of 400 suppliers, of which some had a July 1 deadline to report. Details of the program are online and a good article about the program can be found here.

P&G joins Walmart and other large companies in implementing supplier sustainability scorecards programs. Similar to the Walmart Supplier Sustainability Assessment program, which is centered on 15 questions, the P&G program is clear and simple. Both initiatives focus on carbon, water, and waste and offer clear scores and performance expectations for suppliers. Each program is very transparent and easy to implement.

Differences in the programs do exist, due to company type — P&G is a manufacturer and Walmart is a retailer — and philosophy. For example, the P&G program is performance based (actual results per output units) and more explicitly focused on yearly supplier improvement, whereas the Walmart effort is goal orientated (does the supplier have a goal?). Walmart asks for information on sourcing policies, third party certifications, and community involvement, while P&G does not.

Both firms have done an absolutely outstanding job with these efforts and these programs are models for other manufacturers and retailers considering supplier scorecards.

Sustainability executives should expect more data requests in coming years from their top customers as other large companies implement similar programs. Executives can use these two programs as examples of the types of data that will likely be requested and begin to prepare their organization accordingly.

They will be replaced by Tim Juran, who becomes President and CEO, and Rune Magnus Lundetrae as Vice-President and CFO. Both are employed by Seadrill.

Seadrill currently owns 50.11 percent of Scorpion Offshore’s shares after a bidding war with Ensco International. (Reporting by Gwladys Fouche; Editing by Michael Urquhart)

Indonesia president proposes Nasution as c.bank gov -lawmaker

June 2 (Reuters) – Indonesia’s president on Wednesday proposed acting central bank governor Darmin Nasution, seen as dovish by markets, as the candidate for central bank governor, a legislator from the president’s party said.

The post of central bank governor has been vacant for a year after the former governor Boediono quit to team up with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and run as his vice president in last year’s elections.

Achsanul Qosasi, a lawmaker from Yudhoyono’s Democrat Party, said that the president had nominated Nasution.

Nasution, 61, has said inflation will likely remain within the central bank’s target range of 4-6 percent this year, and that should allow Bank Indonesia to keep its key interest rate BIPG at a record low of 6.5 percent for the rest of 2010, stoking growth in Southeast Asia’s biggest economy. England 2018 bid gets support from Platini and FIFA’s vice-president

London, May 19 (ANI): UEFA president Michel Platini and FIFA vice-president Jack Warner have given a boost to England’s troubled 2018 World Cup bid.

FIFA’s ethics committee are investigating claims made by Lord Triesman that Spain would support Russia’s bid for the 2018 World Cup in return for help bribing referees in South Africa.

Triesman has resigned following publication of a recording of the comments, made secretly during a conversation with a friend, The Mirror reports.

Platini said the row may have damaged England’s bid, but insisted it can recover, and believes Triesman deserves support.

The UEFA president said: “I have a good friendship with Lord Triesman and I want to help him in his bad moment, for him as a person. I want to support my friend in this big problem. I think it is a bad thing that happened to him.”

Platini said the controversy could have harmed England’s bid but under Triesman’s successor Geoff Thompson, a UEFA and FIFA vice-president, the campaign could recover before the vote by FIFA’s executive committee is taken on December 2.

Asked if the bid had been damaged, Platini said: “Maybe yes, I think you need the people who vote on your side. But for the bid Geoff Thompson is a good guy, England is a great country and of course it can recover and survive this.”

Meanwhile, Warner said the FA’s swift action had limited any damage, The Mirror reports.

“It’s unfortunate but the English FA dealt with it appropriately and quickly and therefore I don’t believe there’ll be too much negative reaction from it,” Warner told Bloomberg. (ANI)

Gogoi invites all rebel groups for talks

Guwahati, May 4 (ANI): Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has said that all rebel groups, including the elusive commander-in-chief of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), Paresh Baruah, ought to respond to his invitation for talks in the interest of peace in the region.

Addressing a press conference here Gogoi said: “We want him (Paresh Baruah) as well to come for talks. If he doesn”t come then definitely we would make attempts to arrest him. We would take all the required actions. We have been asking him to come for talks. We want ULFA… anybody can come for talks”.

He also described the arrest of Ranjan Daimary alias D R Nabla, the chief of the anti-talks faction of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), as a prized catch.

“He is a prized catch. After sometimes back, a few leaders of ULFA mainly Vice President, Arabinda Rajkhowa (ULFA Chairman) and others, also after that it is a very big, very big catch. These are the two dreaded organisations in Assam. So definitely it is a very big catch, and it will so a very long way in bringing peace in the state of Assam,” observed Gogoi.

Answering a question about base of rebel groups in Myanmar and Bhutan, Gogoi said that there is rebel groups base in Myanmar as well as in Bangladesh but not much is known about Bhutan.

“We don”t have any information about Bhutan, we have information about Myanmar. There is base of ULFA and other rebel groups as well and there is base of these rebel groups in Bangladesh as well. So we are in conversation with the Myanmar government about this issue. We are seeking support from them. But it can be noted that even Myanmar government has less control in those areas,” Gogoi added.

He further hoped to busting of all the hideouts in Myanmar and Bangladesh. (ANI)

Prince Charles teams up with NBC for green campaign

Melbourne, April 29 (ANI): Britain’s Prince Charles has teamed up with NBC for ‘Green Is Universal’ campaign.

The Royal will offer up a heart-rending look at his work on climate change in Harmony, a feature-length program to be broadcast during NBC”s Green Week this November, reports News.com.au.

“The Prince of Wales has such a passion and vision in providing leadership on this crucial climate issue that confronts the world,” said Paul Telegdy, executive vice president of alternative programming at NBC.

“We are honored to partner with him to showcase these issues that are important to American audiences.”

In a clip from Harmony, the Prince said that many people never took the issue of climate change seriously and thought it was “pretty crazy” when he initiated the topic twenty-two years ago.

“I can only somehow imagine that I find myself being born into this position for a purpose,” he said.

“We have lost something very precious and that is an understanding of an inter-connectedness with nature. Just as mankind has the power to push the world to the brink, so too does he have the power to restore it,” he added. (ANI)

Palin’s answers were ‘scripted’ before TV debate with Biden: GOP strategist

London: Leading Republican strategist Steve Schmidt, the brain behind John McCain’s presidential campaign, has disclosed that former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin’s answers during her TV debate with soon to be US Vice-President Joe Biden were almost rehearsed.

Pitted against the formidable Biden and with time running short, Palin’s preparations for the debate were so poor that the campaign was facing a “crisis” according to Schmidt, and according to him, to avert a complete debacle, Palin was thoroughly tutored.

“These are the questions. Here”s what he”s going to say. Here”s what your most effective response is. That we want to be able to come out of this debate saying you were on offence. If you hear ”A”, you go ahead and say ”B”, and so to that degree it was somewhat scripted,” Schmidt told Sky News.

Incidentally, Schmidt himself had recommended Palin to McCain. They later fell out with Palin accusing McCain’s team of being “too controlling” in her book ‘Going Rogue”.

Schmidt refused to respond to Palin’s accusations directly, saying “I don”t have anything more to add to it on a personal level other than to say that there was a good outcome to that debate.”

NCP leader shot dead in Imphal

Imphal, Apr 27 (ANI): Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Chungsei Haokip was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Imphal.

Sixty-year old Haokip was having food with a friend at a hotel here on Monday, when unidentified gunmen opened fire just after dawn.

Chirayu Amin appointed interim IPL Commissioner

Mumbai, Apr 26 (ANI): The Indian Premier League (IPL) Governing Council that met at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) headquarters this morning to discuss the alleged irregularities with regard to contract and team biddings, and the role of Lalit Modi in the entire episode, on Monday announced that Chirayu Amin would be interim IPL Commissioner.

Amin is the currently the President of the Baroda Cricket Association. He is also the BCCI Vice-President and IPL Governing Council member.

The BCCI has reportedly said that it will go public with all charges filed against Modi.

The BCCI had on Sunday suspended Modi from the post of IPL Commissioner and BCCI Vice-President.

In the show cause notice, BCCI President Shashank Manohar alleged that Modi”s misdemeanors have brought a bad name to cricket administration in the country and to the game itself.

The show cause notice gives Modi 15 days to reply, but suspends him from participating in the affairs of the Board, the IPL, the Working Committee and any other BCCI affairs.

Following his suspension, Modi said he would reveal all about the IPL controversy, adding that the Governing Council and the BCCI were aware of all IPL dealings.

Despite his suspension, there are reports that the IPL franchisees have stood by Modi and asked the BCCI that he should be given a chance to explain his stance.

Modi had earlier indicated he would attend and chair the crucial IPL Governing Council meeting called to decide his fate.

“I will attend and chair the meeting of the Governing Council as chairman and commissioner. I have issued the agenda to the Governing Council,” Modi tweeted. (ANI)

BCCI meets over Lalit Modi issue

Mumbai, April 19 (ANI): The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is holding a meeting here to discuss the controversy surrounding Lalit Modi, the Chairman of governing council of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

BCCI President Shashank Manohar is presiding over the meeting, as it is believed a strategy is being worked out to investigate the ongoing IPL imbroglio.

A three-member BCCI committee, headed by Manohar, is to submit a report on the IPL issue to the board.

The BCCI will hold the IPL Governing Council’s meeting on April 26, where it is likely that the BCCI may ask Modi to step down, a private news channel has reported.

As of now, Modi’s tenure as IPL Commissioner is to last till 2012.

The April 26 meet will discuss allegations against Modi and all other issues related to the Kochi IPL franchise bid. The BCCI working committee meeting would be preceded by a meeting of the IPL’s governing council on April 25.

“All the allegations (against Modi) and other issues would be discussed in the governing council. The date would be announced soon,” Rajeev Shukla, BCCI’s Vice President stated in New Delhi. (ANI)

Level crossing safety measures ‘outdated’

The Queensland Rail, Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) says safety measures on level crossings are outdated.

A car and the Sunlander train collided at a level crossing in Cairns in far north Queensland on Wednesday.

RTBU vice-president Les Moffitt says warning lights at the crossing were working when the collision occurred and new safety measures need to be introduced.

“In days gone by it was sufficient to have the flashing lights and one of the primary warning devices was the claxon whistle on the locomotive,” he said.

“However today with newer vehicles on the highway … they’re all airconditioned pretty well, so people travel along with the windows up, the CDs playing … and it drowns out any outside noise,” he said.

Level crossing crash sparks review call

The Queensland Rail, Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) has renewed calls for new safety measures at level crossings.

A car and the Sunlander train collided at a level crossing in Cairns in far north Queensland yesterday.

The man in the car was not injured.

RTBU vice-president Les Moffitt says it highlights the need to review safety at all level crossings.

“The level crossing involved is one that is being prioritised for boom gates and I believe that Queensland Rail is in the process of having those device fitted,” he said.

“The issue we have is we really need to review the initiatives around level crossings in terms of safety protection.”
