New Zealand set to give All Whites “victory” parade

(Reuters) – New Zealand Prime Minister John Key wants the All Whites to receive a champions’ parade for their battling performance at the World Cup, where they were knocked out in the group stage without losing a match.

Sports

New Zealand drew all three of their contests in South Africa in their second appearance at the finals after being thrashed in all their group games at the 1982 tournament in Spain.

“It would be nice to see their result celebrated,” Key told local media on Friday. “They’ll come back as champions.”

New Zealand, 78th in the FIFA world rankings, will return home after upsetting the odds by holding Slovakia, Paraguay and World Cup holders Italy in Group F.

“They are a team that are going to come back to New Zealand as heroes,” Key said. “It was always going to be a Herculean task to get through.

“In the end they didn’t quite make it on points but a result nevertheless that we can all be proud of.”

However, an official celebration for the New Zealand side could be at least a week and up to a month away with players and coaching staff arriving back at different times.

Wellington would be the likely venue for the parade after talks with New Zealand Football, according to the country’s NZPA news service.

Big-hitter Johnson still the major target at Pebble Beach

California (Reuters) – Dustin Johnson was targeted by the game’s best players before the start of this week’s U.S. Open and he will remain firmly fixed in their sights for Sunday’s final round.

Sports

The long-hitting American, seeking his first major title, fired a sparkling five-under-par 66 in Saturday’s third round at Pebble Beach to move three strokes clear of a high-quality leaderboard.

Johnson birdied the last two holes to leave world number one Tiger Woods trailing by five and second-ranked Phil Mickelson by seven, two players who had specifically sought him out for practice rounds earlier in the week.

Woods and Mickelson were eager to watch the Pebble Beach expert in action, Johnson having won the last two PGA Tour events played at the picturesque coastal venue.

“The first time I walked out here, I loved the place,” Johnson told reporters after posting a six-under total of 207 with only two other players under par. “And I really enjoy playing golf here.

“Length’s an advantage at a lot of places but definitely here, especially if I’m hitting it in the fairway, because the ball is going a long way. I’m hitting it extra far.”

Johnson astonished Woods during a practice round at Pebble Beach on Monday when he struck a four-iron 226 yards into the wind to end up pin high at the par-three 17th.

BIG HITTING

“He doesn’t hit it short, that’s for sure,” Woods said with a laugh after matching Johnson’s 66 on Saturday. “I don’t know how many guys have that shot but I certainly don’t.

“He carried a four-iron 226 into the wind, and (caddie) Steve (Williams) and I are thinking: ‘Well that’s a two-iron, you got to hit a good two-iron.’ And Dustin just pulls out four-iron like it was nothing.”

Mickelson, who carded a 73 in the third round, played a practice round with Johnson on Tuesday and was not at all surprised to see his compatriot atop the U.S. Open leaderboard.

“He’s played good golf, exceptional golf,” left-hander Mickelson said. “It’s not an easy golf course, and he’s striking it very solid and putting well. That’s what you have to do to win an Open and he’s doing it.”

Johnson, a three-times winner on the PGA Tour who will celebrate his 26th birthday on Tuesday, felt confident about his chances of holding on at Pebble Beach to seal victory.

“I’m going to have to be really patient,” he said. “If I keep hitting like I’ve been hitting and putting it in the spots on the green, then I’m going to be tough to beat.

“You couldn’t ask for a better present. This is what I live for, this is what I practise for every day. This is what we play golf for is to have a chance to win the U.S. Open.”

Mickelson eyes top ranking

Phil Mickelson, eager to bury memories of last year, has every reason to look forward to this week’s Colonial Invitational with the world number one ranking within fingertip reach.

Should the American left-hander win the PGA Tour event at Colonial Country Club on Sunday, he would take over at the top of the global pecking order from his compatriot Tiger Woods.

Mickelson has produced a glittering resume that includes four major victories and 38 PGA Tour titles but becoming world number one has remained tantalisingly elusive.

“It’s something that we as golfers all strive to be recognised for — as the best player,” second-ranked Mickelson told reporters on the eve of Thursday’s opening round at Colonial, a venue where he triumphed in 2000 and 2008.

“It would certainly mean a lot because I have not done that in my career. It would be an accomplishment I would look back on and be very proud of.”

Woods, who has steadily dropped ranking points this year, is sidelined with a lingering neck injury and not expected to return to the circuit until at least next week for the Memorial tournament.

However, U.S. Masters champion Mickelson preferred not to be distracted by the rankings topic as he prepared to win another tournament on the world’s most competitive circuit.

“I will probably try to downplay it typically,” the 39-year-old said. “To accomplish that, I can’t focus on that. I still need to go out and play like the number one player in the world, so I’ve got some work to do.”

BREAST CANCER

Mickelson was not prepared to reflect on his life 12 months ago when he suspended his tour campaign indefinitely after his wife Amy was diagnosed with breast cancer.

He had been scheduled to defend his title at Colonial last year but that was instantly taken off the agenda as family matters and his wife’s health became the top priority.

“I don’t really want to go back there,” Mickelson said. “We are a year down the road. That was a tough time, and I’m happy that we are further down the road now.”

American world number four Steve Stricker, who triumphed at Colonial last year in Mickelson’s absence, was delighted to see his compatriot back.

“He is almost the defending champion as well this week,” said Stricker, who won last year’s title by beating fellow American Steve Marino and South African Tim Clark in a playoff.

“I thought it was the greatest feelgood story in golf when he (Mickelson) won at the Masters (in April), and seeing Amy there. I think he is going to be tough to beat here too.”

Apart from Mickelson and Stricker, three other members of the world’s top 10 are competing this week — fifth-ranked Jim Furyk, Ian Poulter (sixth) and Paul Casey (eighth).

Musharraf planning return to Pak but keeps card close to chest

London, May 21 (ANI): Former Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf has hinted that he is planning to return to the country’s political stage soon, but has not disclosed whether he would be running in the Presidential elections or not.

“The question of whether I am running for president or prime minister will be seen later,” Musharraf told CNN.

Musharraf did not disclose the exact time of his return to Pakistan, but officials said that he has already applied to register a new political party named –The All Pakistan Muslim League (APML).

Musharraf also condemned the UN inquiry commission’s report for blaming his regime for former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto’s assassination.

“It was me who warned her about the threat to her. It was I who stopped her from going to that venue once before… but she decided to go again,” BBC quoted Musharraf as telling CNN.

“All the security, wherever possible… by the police was provided to her,” the former general added.

Musharraf has reportedly been in contact with several Pakistani political leaders to garner support for himself and APML.

Insiders said that Musharraf also had a chat with former President Farooq Leghari to discuss various political aspects.

It is reported that they discussed about certain ‘disappointed’ political leaders who could join the APML.

Musharraf and some of the ‘dissident’ leaders of the Pakistan Muslim League-Q and (PML-Q) and the PML-Z are already in contact, “and some of the rebel leaders have given the green signal to Musharraf for standing in the presidential elections. (ANI)

Riot squad called in after brawl at DJ Bally Sagoo’s dance party

London, May 3 (ANI): Riot police was called to a hotel after the licensee threw 1000 people out of a dance party featuring British-Indian DJ Bally Sagoo.

Eight police cars and around 30 officers rushed to the Art House Hotel in Pitt Street a little after 2 am in response to a frantic call by the licensee. He shut down the venue following the skirmish.

The disgruntled partygoers were mostly of Indian origin. They had waited for several hours to watch Bally Sagoo in action.

“We were here especially for him, all of a sudden, people started fighting and suddenly there was a shout and everyone was chucked out,” finance worker Kevin Sunni told The Daily Telegraph.

Sagoo is a prominent Brit-Indian DJ who ushered in the Bhangra craze with his thumping remixes. (ANI)

Slow starts by Randhawa and Kapur

Seville (Spain), April 30 (IANS) Jyoti Randhawa and Shiv Kapur had a rather unhappy start with rounds of 73 and 77 in the opening round of the Open de Espana at the Real Club de Golf.

Randhawa’s 73 placed him tied 75th here Thursday while Kapur’s 77 placed him 133rd — and he was in danger of missing the cut.

Argentina’s big-hitting Ricardo Gonzalez made a superb return to the venue where he won the 2004 Open de Sevilla. The 40-year-old fired a seven under par 65 to lead former English amateur champion Paul Waring by one after the first round.

Waring has yet to record a top five finish since coming through the 2007 Qualifying School, but a month ago in Malaga he knocked four strokes off his best round on The European Tour with a 62.

The group in third place on four under includes England’s Simon Dyson and Spaniard Alvaro Quiros, both back in action three weeks after missing the cut at The Masters Tournament.

Sir Viv stadium to be open to matches again in May

St. John’s (Antigua), April 29 (IANS) The Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, suspended for a year, will be available for international cricket in West Indies’ home series against South Africa in May.

The stadium was suspended from international circuit for a year after the second Test there against England was abandoned after just 10 balls because of the dangerous condition of the outfield.

The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Tuesday said the ground has been cleared by the International Cricket Council (ICC) and it would host the matches, two Twenty20 (May 19 ,20) internationals and two one-day internationals (May 22, 24) which were earlier scheduled to be held at Trinidad and Tobago.

‘A full inspection of the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium was conducted by the International Cricket Council and the venue has been given full clearance to host international cricket again,’ the WICB said.

The series against South Africa will begin immediately after the conclusion of the World Twenty20 Championship which begins Friday and will comprise three Tests and five ODIs.

Henin overcomes broken finger and fiery German in opener

Four-times French Open champion Justine Henin overcame a broken finger and fired-up German opponent to win her opening match at Stuttgart on Wednesday, her first clay court tournament since her comeback.

The 27-year-old was taken to a tiebreak in the first set before breaking Julia Goerges’ resistance in the second for a 7-6 6-1 first-round win.

Henin, finalist in the Australian Open in January in only her second tournament back after a break of nearly two years, is gearing up for her first visit to her favourite venue at Roland Garros since her self-imposed exile from the game.

Her last appearance in Paris was in 2007 when she won her fourth title there.

The Belgian, a wild card for the event, battled through the match wearing a splint on her little left finger which she broke in training last week.

“The improvement is pretty good, even if my finger is not yet beautiful, it’s still really blue but the pain is a lot less and that’s a nice feeling,” Henin, who has already climbed to 24th in the rankings, told reporters.

“I have started to get used to the splint during the match so I felt better today.”

“It was a tough first set, she was on fire, serving pretty well and being pretty aggressive and you slide a lot on this court, when you’re on the defensive it’s not easy to come back onto the court.

“I was much more aggressive in the second set and I was more into the game, she had nothing to lose and went for everything.”

“I didn’t play for two years so I’m just trying to find the balance with my game,” said Henin who, among other things, took part in a reality show on Belgian television during her sabbatical.

“I need matches before the French Open, that’s for sure, everything I’ve done since the beginning of the season has been pretty good. I’m just trying to get used to my career again.”

“It’s good to play matches, that’s what I need, it’s good to be back.”

World number two Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark is top seed.

Agnieszka Radwanska (5) became the first seed to go out when she lost to Israel’s Shahar Peer, who won 6-3 6-7 6-2.

Chelsea Clinton flashes engagement ring at Broadway”s ”Promises, Promises”

New York, April 27 (ANI): Former U.S. First Daughter Chelsea Clinton flashed her sizeable diamond engagement ring from Marc Mezvinsky for the first time at the opening night of Broadway”s “Promises, Promises.”

The 30-year-old bride-to-be arrived at the musical on crutches having broken her heel earlier this month, reports the New York Daily News.

She is expected to shed her cast in time to marry her investment banker beau this summer.

Clinton has not revealed the venue for the impending marriage.

However, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told CNN in December that the wedding would be intimate.

“It will be a private affair. It will be for [Chelsea''s] close friends and that”s the way it should be,” she said. (ANI)

Mikitenko hampered by fierce European winter

A savage European winter has tested the resources of defending women’s London marathon champion Irina Mikitenko to the full.

Mikitenko decamped to Spain in January to train because conditions were so bad in Germany. In February, with heavy snowfalls still making it impossible to run through the forests, she was forced inside to an indoor track in Frankfurt.

“I had to train on the indoor track, on a 200 metres track,” she told Reuters in an interview through a translator before Sunday’s London race. “Imagine running 40 kilometres a day on a 200 metre track?”

Planned altitude training in March presented similar problems.

“Usually we go back to St Moritz but at the moment they have a lot of snow there still so we picked Kyrgyzgtan because I grew up there as a child and my parents-in-law are there,” Mitikenko said.

“We have figured out what the best altitude is for me and it is between 1,600 and 1,700 metres and we combine training with visiting my parents-in-law. But for the first time in 30 years they even had snow.”

Despite the difficulties, Mikitenko said she had completed all her training sessions and was ready to emulate fellow-German Katrin Dorre by completing a hat-trick of London titles.

Temperatures of 21 degrees Celsius are predicted on Sunday, which Mikitenko said should not present a problem.

“Usually it’s windy in London so I don’t sweat,” she said.

Mikitenko, 37, said London would always be a special venue with the 2012 Olympics as her ultimate goal.

“There are certain cities or competitions where you always like to go back or have good memories from,” she said.

“There are certain things like the organisation, it’s just great, from beginning to end.

“It’s a great course for me there will be a huge amount of people cheering me, there is no place where there are no spectators. That’s why I always like to come back here.

BJP President Gadkari faints during public rally in Delhi

New Delhi, April 21 (ANI): The scorching heat of Delhi proved too much for the Bharatiya Janata Party President, Nitin Gadkari, on Wednesday, as he fainted during a protest march organised against price rise in the country.

Gadkari was leading the BJP march, headed towards Jantar Mantar at Parliament Street from Ramlila Maidan, when he fainted.

However, Gadkari resumed his march after a short while.

“Gadkari ji’s health is now okay,” said Vijay Jolly, President of BJP’s Delhi Unit, to mediapersons.

Meanwhile, in the morning, life was thrown out of gear for office-goers, as huge crowds of BJP supporters were approaching the Ramlila Maidan, the venue for the public rally.

Long traffic snarls made it quite difficult for people to commute at many places across the capital, as hundreds of thousands of BJP supporters converged for the public rally.

The rally, which has been organized to showcase the public anger against the steeply rising prices of commodities, drew BJP supporters from across the country. (ANI)

Katy Perry, Russell Brand to marry in Japan?

London, April 16(ANI): Katy Perry and Russell Brand are considering getting married in Japan, sources say.

Earlier, pop star Rihanna had revealed that the couple were planning to get hitched in India later this year.

However, the pair is keeping their options open.

“Russ and Katy are marrying at the end of the year, almost a year to the day he proposed,” the Mirror quoted a source as saying.

The insider added: “They originally planned to wed in India, in an intimate ceremony before close friends and family within the grounds of the Taj Rambagh Palace hotel, where Russell popped the question.

“They have a holding reservation but nothing is set in stone. The pair of them want to keep people guessing and on their toes – even their celeb pals.

“Whilst in LA, Russell told a couple of people that they were also considering Tokyo as a venue.

“It is a really buzzy, vibrant city and somewhere completely different and unique. Katy kept jokingly hitting Russell, telling him to keep his big mouth shut.

“But Katy really likes the idea of wearing some kind of Geisha-inspired bridal dress so it is a real possibility.” (ANI)

US girl, 15, sells stepsister, 7, for sex

London, April 1 (ANI): A 15-year-old American girl has been arrested on charges of selling her stepsister, 8 years her junior, for sex.

According to New Jersey police, the teen took her 7-year-old stepsister to an apartment close to their home in Trenton town where about seven men raped the younger girl.

It is said the teen was paid for bringing her stepsister to the apartment and she was present at the venue when the men raped the younger girl.

All this while their parents thought the girls had run away.

“We”re talking about a kid who told her sister to go into an apartment and let people rape her,” the Telegraph quoted Trenton police Capt. Joseph Juniak, as saying.

He added: “It”s unfathomable.”

Cops have charged the older girl with aggravated sexual assault, promoting prostitution and other crimes. Although her name cannot be revealed for legal reasons, the county prosecutor plans to request the court to try her as an adult.

The girl is currently held at a youth detention centre.

Mayor Doug Palmer said the younger girl had accompanied her sister to the apartment – where the men had thrown a party – because she was worried about her safety.

Once there, the teen encouraged her younger sister to let the men touch her.

Capt Juniak said: “It went from touching to straight out assault and rape.

“They threatened to kill her if she screamed or told anyone.”

Their parents called the cops when both girls didn”t return home by 4:30pm last weekend.

Two women saw the younger girl crying and escorted her home, where the police had already arrived.

The child narrated the whole story.

Police arrested 15-year-old later that night.

Palmer said: “It”s sickening…The police are taking this personal. I know there”s a place in hell for all the people that participated in this and I”m sure they will get there.” (ANI)

Cup bid healthy, with or without Docklands

Football Federation Australia chairman Frank Lowy is confident the nation’s bid to host the World Cup is on track despite confirming Melbourne’s Docklands stadium is no longer a considered venue.

Lowy says he has decided on the 12 stadiums which will host matches if Australia’s bid is successful – with Docklands left out after management said it will honour its contractual obligation to host AFL matches.

“Etihad (Docklands) is off the list,” Lowy said.

“They have certain prior rights and they’re using it for (AFL), there’s nothing we can do about it.

“We’ll do without them and we’ll succeed without them.”

Lowy said people should not assume Australia would be successful in its bid, saying the competition was strong.

But he believed “sympathy” towards Australia could prove decisive in the race to host either the 2018 or 2022 tournament.

“It’s a contest,” he told reporters.

“We’ve got nine nations competing against us and of course all of them, with the exception of Indonesia – who decided not to go ahead – are putting their best foot forward in building and promising stadia.

“I think that there is a sympathy for Australia. We’ve never had it here. We’re part of the Asian confederation. We’re giving an opportunity for FIFA and world football to have exposure to Asia better than in most other places.

“I think we’re doing well. As I said, I’m hopeful, I’m confident, but we must remember this is a contest.

“There are nine countries participating but we’re in as good a position as I would have expected us to be for this time.

“We are just about there and I’m confident of the position that we’re in. We’ll have the 12 stadia that are required to put the bid into FIFA.”

Misinformation about antibiotics spreads quickly via Twitter

Washington, March 31 (ANI): A new study has revealed that misinformation about antibiotics can travel to large audience through social networking sites like Twitter.

Experts from Columbia University and MixedInk (New York, NY) examined the health information content of Twitter updates mentioning antibiotics to determine how people are sharing information and assess the proliferation of misinformation.

The investigation explored evidence of misunderstanding or misuse of antibiotics.

“Research focusing on microblogs and social networking services is still at an early stage. Further study is needed to assess how to promote healthy behaviors and to collect and disseminate trustworthy information using these tools,” Daniel Scanfeld and colleagues said.

The authors stressed that because health information is shared extensively on such networks, it is important for health care professionals to have a basic familiarity with social networking media services, such as Twitter.

They add that such services can potentially be used to gather important real-time health data and may provide a venue to identify potential misuse or misunderstanding of antibiotics, promote positive behavior change, and disseminate valid information.

The study appears in the April issue of AJIC: American Journal of Infection Control. (ANI)

Cage fighters implicated in brawl

Lismore police are investigating a possible link between a weekend brawl outside a hotel and a cage-fighting event that was held in the city on the same night.

Detectives say competitors from the tournament were among those outside the venue when police were called at about half past three on Sunday morning.

Detective inspector Greg Moore says few witnesses were willing to co-operate with the attending officers, and closed-circuit television footage is now being reviewed.

He says it’s not clear what involvement, if any, the cage fighters had in the brawl.

New memorial to be ready for Anzac Day

The Moranbah Returned Services League (RSL), south of Mackay, says it is very happy with the town’s new cenotaph, which should be completed before this year’s Anzac Day services.

RSL spokesman Dennis Page says the old memorial is worn down and does not recognise all the personnel who served in conflicts and peacekeeping missions.

Mr Page says the new cenotaph, being built in the town square, is something the RSL wanted to give to the community

“Our membership is falling off now, a lot of people are retiring and moving away from Moranbah,” he said.

“We wanted to leave a monument that we could be proud of, for remembrance and all the veterans.

“Something that the council and hopefully the community and schools could take over and carry on the Anzac tradition with – a venue that the whole community could be proud of.”
