Suicide bomber rides rickshaw into checkpost

A suicide bomb attack has killed at least 13 people and wounded more than 50 in the Swat Valley in north-west Pakistan.

The attack comes the day after a series of blasts which rocked the Pakistani city of Lahore.

The suicide bomber detonated himself in Saidu Sharif, an area on the outskirts of Mingora – the main town in the Swat Valley.

Police say he was trying to enter a building when he blew himself up. It is believed he was carrying 15 kilograms of explosives.

The blast also damaged 20 vehicles.

On Friday, twin suicide attacks killed dozens of people in the city of Lahore. Five other bombs were also set off the city but these caused no casualties.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attacks but the Taliban had earlier threatened to unleash a wave of suicide attacks in response to a Pakistani military offensive against it.

J and K HC orders exhumation of Shopian rape victims bodies

Srinagar July 4 (ANI): The Jammu and Kashmir High Court today directed state police to exhume the bodies of the victims of rape and murder in Shopian for fresh post mortem.

The court also ordered that no person, including security personnel could leave Shopian without special permission. The order is binding on personnel of the Central Reserve Police Force and the Jammu and Kashmir State Police.

A two-judge division bench of the J and K High Court, comprising Chief Justice Barin Gosh and Justice Mohammad Yaqoob Mir, issued the orders after hearing a PIL filed by the Kashmir Bar Association.

However, the court said the consent of the victims’ family is required before the bodies could be exhumed.

The Kashmir Valley has witnessed protests following discovery of the bodies of 17-year-old Asiya and her pregnant 22-year-old sister-in-law Nelofar in a stream on May 30 after they went missing from their orchard on the previous day. Amid massive demonstrations across the Valley, police registered a case of rape and murder. They have not named any suspects.

The same bench of the J and K high Court on Friday ordered a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by Inspector General of Police Farooq Ahmed, to interrogate all suspended officials and if necessary to conduct a narco analyses test of these officials.

The Jammu and Kashmir Government suspended the then district police chief of Shopian Javed Iqbal Mattoo, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Rohit Baskotra, Station House Officer (SHO) Shafeeq Ahmad, Sub-Inspector Qazi Abdul Karim and Javed Iqbal Hafiz, scientific officer forensic science laboratory following recommendations made by the Justice Muzaffar Jan Commission. NWFP Govt. asks police to treat Taliban as guests, give free hand

Lahore, Apr 15 (ANI): The police has been asked by the North West Frontier Government not to interfere with the Taliban, as they are “guests” and should be allowed a free hand.

The Telegraph quoted a police official in Buner as saying that they “have been instructed by the government to stay away from the Taliban as they are our guests and should be allowed to walk around the marketplace.”

Buner is the latest district hit by violence after the Taliban stormed it from the neighbouring Swat valley, where the government on Monday agreed to the Taliban demand of imposing sharia.

The policeman said he has been told that any action against the Taliban would be a setback for the peace process.

Buner residents formed a lashkar to resist the Taliban, and clashes have so far killed eight Taliban, three policemen and two villagers.

Authorities claim they were negotiating with the Taliban to convince them to withdraw, but the Taliban seem going nowhere and determined to take over the valley, police said.

“They are everywhere. They are visiting mosques and bazaars and asking people to help them enforce sharia,” a senior police official said.

He said Buner was rapidly turning into Swat. (ANI)
