2000-year-old Roman amphitheatre discovered in Israel

Washington, September 19 (ANI): A team of archaeologists has discovered a 2000-year-old Roman amphitheatre near Tiberias in Israel.

According to a report in the Haaretz newspaper, Archeologist, Doctor Valid Atrash, from the Israel Antiquities Authority, said that the remnants of the Roman amphitheatre peaks from 15 meters below ground.

The 1990 findings came as a surprise to the archeologists digging near Mount Berniki in the Tiberias hills as there are no references to such a place anywhere in scriptures.

Only at the beginning of 2009, 19-years after the primary discovery, did the uncovering of the theatre in its entirety begin.

The late Professor Izhar Hirshfeld and Yossi Stefanski, the archeologists heading the excavation, initially assessed the remains to belong to the 2nd or 3rd century CE, but quickly realized that they go all the way back to the beginning of the 1st century CE, closer to the founding of Tiberias.

“The most interesting thing about the amphitheatre is its Jewish context,” said Hirshfeld upon the discovery.

“Unlike Tzipori, which was a multi-cultural city, Tiberias was a Jewish city under Roman rule. The findings demonstrate the city’s pluralistic nature and cultural openness, a fact uncommon in those days,” Hirshfeld added.

According to Atrash, in light of the findings, Tiberias appears as particularly liberal for a city that was established over 2000 years ago.

He added that “the theatre was enormous, and being so it attracted a lot of attention. It seated over 7000 people, and appears to have been a prominent landmark for the entire area.”

Zohar Oved, Mayor of Tiberias, said that the discovery of the amphitheatre is undoubtedly “one of the most important findings in the history of the Jewish people” and is planned to open to the public as part of Tiberias archeological gardens in the near future. (ANI)

Zillur Rahman set to be Bangladesh’s 19th president

Zillur Rahman set to be Bangladesh's 19th presidenthaka – Senior Awami League leader Zillur Rahman is set to be the 19th president of Bangladesh as the election authorities Monday validated his lone nomination for the presidential race, officials said.

“We are awaiting the formal declaration,” Abdul Shahid, the chief whip of Bangladesh parliament, said after a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner ATM Shamsul Huda, who is the returning officer for the presidential election.

Huda said that Zillur was the only candidate.

After scrutiny the commission will formally announce his presidency on February 11, the last day for withdrawal of candidature for the election, voting for which is scheduled for February 16.

But the election authorities found only one nomination paper submitted for the post and it was valid.

Therefore, there is no need of voting, election officials said.

Bangladesh’s constitutional provisions stipulate an electoral collage, comprising members of 300-strong parliament, elect the president through open vote if there is more than one candidate.

There was no candidate from the opposition parties, which have only 31 out of 300 parliamentary seats.

Zillur Rahma, a 79-year old League veteran, will replace Iajuddin Ahmed, the outgoing president, whose tenure expired in 2007. But the election could not be held because of a military takeover followed by promulgation of state of emergency in early January 2007.

Bangladesh returned to a democratic system early this year following its landmark December 29 general elections, in which Awami League-led alliance of Sheikh Hasina Wazed won a landslide victory.

Bangladesh has elected 18 presidents since its independence in 1971.

Zillur played a vital role in keeping the party united during the absence of party chief Hasina during the two years of army-backed government, when she was in exile and later arrested on corruption charges.

He was elected was elected deputy leader of parliament by the Awami League party immediately after its election victory.

“We hope the country will be more prosperous under the leadership of the new president,” said the chief whip of parliament. (dpa)

Pacific unanimous on tough line on Fiji military, says New Zealand

Wellington – Leaders of Pacific island countries who will meet next week to decide whether to suspend Fiji’s military rulers from their 16-member regional forum are unanimous in their desire to see democracy restored there, New Zealand Prime Minister John Key said on Tuesday.

Key rejected charges by Fiji’s strongman leader, Commodore Voreqe (Frank) Bainimarama, who ousted the elected government in a bloodless coup two years ago, that New Zealand and Australia were bullying their smaller neighbour.

Forum leaders will meet in Papua New Guinea on January 27 to discuss sanctions against Fiji after Bainimarama reneged on a pledge to hold fresh elections and restore democracy by March.

Key said a range of options would be on the table, including suspending Fiji’s membership, which would be a first for the 37-year-old regional grouping.

“I think there’s a growing sense of frustration from Pacific leaders that the interim government needs to demonstrate that it’s serious about undertaking elections and we’re not seeing any demonstration at all of that,” Key told a news conference.

Bainimarama, who boycotted the forum’s annual summit last year, told a New Zealand radio station on Monday that he would not go to the Papua New Guinea meeting because of floods that ravaged his nation of about 930,000 people last week.

Key said there was widespread sympathy for the Fijian people, adding, “But realistically this was his opportunity to front up and given an explanation of the timetable and the roadmap towards restoring those elections.

“He’s certainly not strengthening his hand by failing to turn up.”

Key said there was no valid reason why an election could not be held this year. “We believe that Fiji has got to start demonstrating publicly and with a sense of legitimacy that they intend to restore the country towards democracy,” he said. (dpa)

Pre-authorisation required for travel to the United States

Munich/Berlin – Travellers to the United States have been advised to check the new regulations about online registration as early as possible.

Since January 12, travellers to the US from countries that are part of the Visa Waiver Program must go to https://esta. cbp. dhs. gov and obtain pre-authorisation by filling out an online form.

Once issued, the pre-authorisation is valid for two years. Tourists thinking of flying to the US in the summer may apply online now. Some airport operators in Europe are advising travellers to obtain permission as early as possible.

The Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) can only be used by citizens from countries that do not require a visa to enter the US. Those countries include several EU members such as Germany, Britain, France, Ireland and Spain.

Pre-authorisation must be obtained by anyone travelling to the US by plane or ship and by anyone making a short stopover in US territory. The US government has advised travellers to fill out the form at least 72 hours prior to commencing their journey, but last minute passengers will also be able to apply for authorisation.

Travel organizations recommend passengers bring a print-out of the information they supplied to ESTA as well as a copy of their registration number which has been sent to them by email.

The new regulations are expected to ease waiting times and streamline the process of passing through US customs upon entering the country. (dpa)
