Pak intelligence agencies warns of attack on security agencies in Punjab

Lahore, May 10 (ANI): Pakistan’s intelligence agencies have warned about militants planning to target law enforcement agencies in Punjab using stolen vehicles.

According to an intelligence report, which has been forwarded to all concerned authorities, a militant named Abu Bakr was planning to strike in the region on orders of his commander Qari Zalzla.

The intelligence input further said that a white Suzuki van bearing registration number STP-9199, which was stolen from the Combined Military Hospital Rawalpindi’s car parking lot, might be used in the attack.

Earlier, intelligence agencies had issued a warning regarding Al-Qaeda’s plans to target the US Embassy in Islamabad.

According to intelligence inputs, the terror outfit may use three bulletproof vehicles, which have entered Pakistan from Afghanistan, for carrying out the attack.

Intelligence agencies also warned that two suicide bombers belonging to the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) might have sneaked into Rawalpindi to wreak havoc in the city, The Daily Times reports.

All law enforcement and security authorities have been alerted regarding the threat.

Following the report, the Punjab Home Department has directed all concerned agencies to beef up security in and around all important establishments and government buildings in the province.
Security officials have also been asked to maintain a tight vigil and scan all vehicles entering or leaving the province from each entry and exit point. (ANI)

Bhutto killing: ‘Ex-ISI chief remarks on US involvement outrageous’

The Obama Administration on Thursday termed as “outrageous” and “baseless” the allegation of Pakistan’s former Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) head Hamid Gul about the US’ involvement in assassination of Benazir Bhutto.

“That is outrageous,” a senior State Department official told reporters here after the US Embassy in Islamabad dismissed such an allegation coming from Gul about Bhutto’s murder and the UN report on it.

“He is frequent commentator on television, and certainly has an anti-American agenda,” the official said.

“General Gul made an outrageous suggestion that the US was responsible for assassination of Benazir Bhutto. And Jamaat claimed the US was somehow responsible for the terrible attack on their peaceful demonstration in Peshawar on Monday,” P J Crowley, Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs, told reporters.

“Such comments are baseless and irresponsible and should be examined by Pakistani media objectively. The US and Pakistan were fighting and our citizens were dying at the hands of these common enemies,” he said.

Crowley said extremists do not discriminate between striking Pakistani and American targets and continue to claim innocent lives of people from all walks of life, “from the peaceful Jamaat protesters to Benazir Bhutto.”

“We are encouraged by the recent trends in Pakistani public opinion that recognise the value of the ongoing strategic dialogue and ever-improving cooperation between the United States and Pakistan,” he said.

The State Department official said that many people in Pakistan have recognise the positive tone and substance in the US-Pakistan relationship.

“Our strategic partnership involves working together to address the needs of the Pakistani people and the security of Pakistan and the region,” Crowley said.

He said the US and Pakistan “together can and must take a stand” against those who would serve as apologists for terrorists.

“In the best spirit of a free press, Pakistani editors and newsmakers should strive to highlight the irresponsibility of unfounded statements like these that are designed to divide rather than unite us,” Crowley said.

Acknowledging that the US’ low image in Pakistan is an issue of great concern to the Obama Administration, Crowley said the government was working hard in this regard.

“We have spent a great deal of effort building this relationship, explaining more significantly to Pakistani people, along with the Secretary (of State) in Pakistan, doing that, and we think that has helped change the environment. I think there was a significant and positive response to the recent US-Pakistan strategic dialogue,” he said, adding but this remains a work in progress and US would continue dialogue with Pakistan in the coming weeks and months.

US undecided on offering India like nuclear deal to Pak

Islamabad, Mar.23 (ANI): Amid speculations that the US might offer Pakistan a civil nuclear deal similar to India during the upcoming strategic dialogue on March 24, the US embassy in Islamabad has rejected such reports, saying there are no negotiations on between the two countries on the issue.

“The US has not entered negotiations on a civil nuclear agreement with Pakistan. The United States is committed to helping Pakistan address its real and growing energy needs, and we look forward to cooperating with Pakistan in ways that are compatible with Pakistan’s economic, environmental and security needs and with US international commitments and policies,” a US Embassy spokesman told a private television channel.

Reports regarding the Obama Administration offering a India-like nuclear deal to Islamabad gained momentum after US Ambassador to Pakistan, in a interview with a newspaper, described the March 24 talks as “working level talks”, and hinted a change of heart on part of Washington.

“We are beginning to have a discussion with the Pakistan Government on the country’s desire to tap nuclear energy,” Patterson had said.

“Earlier on, non-proliferation concerns were quite severe. I think we are beginning to pass those and this is a scenario that we are going to explore,” she added.

India has already expressed concerns over reports regarding the White House’ overtures to Pakistan.

“America needs to take a holistic view on the US-Pak nuclear deal. The US should consider Pakistan’s track record before any deal,” External Affairs Minister SM Krishna had said referring to the history of Pakistan’s nuclear proliferation. (ANI)

US-Pak relations complicated, but indispensable: Holbrooke

Washington, Sep 19(ANI): United States special envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan, Richard Holbrooke, has said that the US-Pakistan partnership is “complicated, but indispensable,” and reaffirmed the Obama administration’s support to Pakistan.

Holbrooke said this while quashing media reports, which had suggested that the US embassy in Islamabad was expanding in order to secretly house 1000 marines as some kind of a military footprint, The News reports.

He emphasised that the embassy was being enlarged to help relations between the two close allies, and said: “We are enlarging the embassy, because Pakistan is very important and our embassy is smaller than that of let’s say Colombia. We need to increase the size of the embassy in order to serve the policies (that befit) relations between the two nations, who have a complicated, but indispensable relationship and partnership.”

Holbrooke was speaking at an event to launch a Pashto broadcast service along Pakistan-Afghanistan border regions by Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL).

He further said that the US was looking forward to contributing to Pakistan citizens by broadcasting in the local language.

“The key is Pakistanis themselves, and we will support them every way we can, in the media area as everywhere else. We are not going to set up American broadcasting stations, this is an open part of the international network (providing) the means of communication to the people of Pakistan,” Holbrooke said. (ANI)

According to a private television channel, the highly sophisticated weapons have been imported from the US and each of them cost about 800,000 rupees.

When enquired about the US embassy’s contract with the private security firm, a spokesman said it was no secret that the embassy had hired Inter Risk. He said the deal was finalized in April itself. (ANI)

US embassy in Islamabad forces ambitious hotel project to shift over security concerns

Islamabad, Sep.17 (ANI): The US embassy in Islamabad has raised security concerns over the multi-billion rupee private hotel project, due to which the Capital Development Authority (CDA) has virtually been forced to shelve it.

According to The Nation, under pressure from the US embassy, the construction work at the site has been suspended and the owners of the hotel are now planning to shift the project to some other location.

The US embassy has raised objections saying it is too close to comfort and may cause serious security issues.

However, the CDA has rejected reports regarding any US interference in the construction of the seven storey building.

CDA official spokesman and Director General Syed Mustafain Kazmi said that financial issues had forced the promoters of the project to stop the work, and the US embassy has nothing to do with it.

“Bank debt and rescheduling of loans is the main reason of the slow-down of the hotel project that is located near the National Convention Centre,” Kazmi said. (ANI)

China expresses concern over US embassy’s expansion plans in Islamabad

Islamabad, Sep.5 (ANI): China has expressed concerns over reports of a massive expansion of the US embassy in Islamabad.

Addressing a press conference here, Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Luo Zhaohui said that the expansion of the American embassy should be in accordance with the rules and regulations of Pakistan and should respect its sovereignty.

“China has concerns over expansion of US embassy in Islamabad and the United States should expand its embassy by materializing rules and regulations of Pakistan,” Zhaohui said.

Responding to a question, Zhaohui said Beijing has no plans to station its security forces in the Chinese embassy in Islamabad, as it is satisfied with the security cover being provided by the Pakistan government.

“We have no plan to deploy Chinese Army in our consulate,” The Nation quoted Zhaohui, as saying.

Zhaohui also raised questions over the US’ AFPAK policy, and said that Pakistan should not be linked with Afghanistan, as it is a sovereign state unlike its neighbour where the US led allied forces are engaged in a brutal battle against extremism for the last eight years.

“China is against using the term Af-Pak for Pakistan, as it is a sovereign state which should not be compared with Afghanistan where the US and allied forces are battling against insurgency,” he said.

Earlier, Interior Minister Rehman Malik had rejected media reports that the US is planning to send more Marines to Pakistan.

Malik said the news that US has hired 300 houses in Islamabad was ‘baseless’.

“US, China and Turkey have applied for extra land for extension of their embassies. akistan is a sovereign country, who ever come to Pakistan should have to obey the laws and regulations of this country,” Malik said.

He also rebutted reports regarding the presence of controversial US firm ‘Blackwater’ inside the country’s territory.

“Blackwater is not operating in Pakistan-we have our own system, rules and regulations-we will not allow any body to operate from here,” Malik said. (ANI)

No military reason linked with US Embassy’s expansion, clarifies Patterson

Islamabad, Aug. 28 (ANI): US ambassador in Islamabad, Anne W Patterson, has clarified that the US embassy in Islamabad is being expanded in order to accommodate the additional staff needed to deal with increased financial aid to Pakistan, and not for any military purpose.

The Daily Times quoted Patterson as saying that reports of an alarming increase in the number of US Marines to be stationed in the premises were baseless.

“There are only nine Marines looking after the internal security of the embassy and after expansion work, scheduled to be completed within seven years, the number of Marines will be less than 20,” the report quoted her, as saying.

She added that about 1,000 Marines were responsible for internal security of its 150 embassies and consulates throughout the world; therefore, it was not possible that there could be thousands of Marines in Pakistan only.

She further clarified that Marines were not authorised to conduct combat or security detail outside embassy premises, and their sole responsibility was to ensure the mission’s internal security.

The US embassy currently houses 250 permanent staff and the number can go up to 300 to 500 as per needs.

On the US spying on Pakistan, Patterson said the US did not need a bigger embassy “if we want to spy on Pakistan. We do not need to spy on Pakistan.” (ANI)

Holbrooke rejects reports about stationing Marines in Islamabad

Islamabad, Aug.19 (ANI): US Special Representative for Pakistan and Afghanistan Richard Holbrooke has rejected reports about the stationing of US Marines in Islamabad.

Sources said during his meeting with President Asif Ali Zardari, Holbrooke clarified that the massive expansion of the US embassy in Islamabad was primarily to accommodate all US staff.

Foreign Minister Shah Ahmed Qureshi also endorsed Holbrooke’s statement saying: “‘We know that no US Marine is coming to Islamabad … Some media outlets have wrongly reported in this context.”

It may be noted that media reports, based on a US State Department document, claimed that the Obama government was constructing a Marine House in Islamabad to accommodate at least 1000 marines at a cost of 112.5 million dollars.

The Obama Administration is about to spend 405 million dollars for the reconstruction and refurbishment of the main embassy building and 111 million dollars for constructing a new complex for 330 personnel. A further 197 million dollars would be spent for construction of a housing unit for about 250 personnel.

18 acres of land has already been acquired by the US for the project for a meager one billion rupees, and a Turkish firm has already built a 153-room compound for the embassy.

The US is planning to send about 1000 additional staff to Pakistan, where 750 US officials are already stationed against a sanctioned strength of only 350 personnel.

During the meeting, Zardari told Holbrooke that early adoption of legislation in the US on Reconstruction Opportunity Zones (RoZ) was necessary to bring social and political stability in the region.

Holbrooke said the prime motive of his visit was to refocus US policy on the region and to support Pakistan.

“President Obama’s decision to preside over along with President Zardari the forthcoming meeting of the Friends of Democratic Pakistan reflected the US government’s desire to support any initiative aimed at lending critical strategic and economic support to Pakistan,” the Dawn quoted Holbrooke, as saying. Nawaz’s dramatic U-turn, to visit US embassy for first time ever

Islamabad, Apr. 3 (ANI): In a major U-turn, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz chief Nawaz Sharif is expected to meet President Obama’s Special Representative Richard Holbrooke during his forthcoming Islamabad visit, The News reports.

Sharif’s visit to the US embassy in Islamabad would be a major U-turn for the PML-N, which has criticized PPP leaders for going to the American ambassador’s residence to meet the US envoy or other visiting dignitaries.

“The fact is that the US officials have visited Raiwind many times for meeting Nawaz Sharif and meetings are a mutual phenomenon. We never struck secret deals, in closed doors, and our history is an open book,” The News quoted PML-N sources, as saying.

Meanwhile, US officials say they will stay in touch with Sharif and other opposition leaders in Pakistan and their meetings with him are nothing unusual.

“Nawaz Sharif is trying to show flexibility to gain the Americans’ confidence, as while it is easy for any Pakistani politician to try and mobilize support among the people by acting as anti-American, in the end they always have to work with the United States. The same is happening with Nawaz Sharif,” a PML-N leader said.

Americans say they are working closely with the democratically elected Pakistani government led by President Asif Ali Zardari and the opposition party. The policy to work with opposition party is not just limited to Pakistan, but US general diplomatic policy, they added.

“There is a government in place. We are working with the government. There are opposition parties, we have regular contacts with them not only in Pakistan but also in all countries,” State Department Spokesman Gordon Duguid had stated in response to a question if Washington is looking more towards PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif.

The US officials will have discussions with opposition parties and their members in order to discuss with the entire political leadership how they see that Pakistan moves forward. (ANI)

’50 million dollar US aid for Swat lying useless in Islamabad’

Islamabad, Mar. 30 (ANI): United States Ambassador to Pakistan, Anne W Patterson, has revealed that 50 million dollars in aid, meant for the rehabilitation and development work in Swat and Northern Areas, were lying unused at the US embassy in Islamabad.

The News quoted Patterson, as telling the former PPP senator Enver Baig that the huge amount, readily available and exclusively meant for the rehabilitation and development of the troubled areas, was being wasted because no one in concerned quarters was interested.

The people, who want to start development work in the tribal areas, needed some security and access, but response was not coming, she added.

Patterson had gone to meet Baig to show her respect after his retirement from the Senate.

Baig wondered how could concerned authorities avoid use of such a huge amount, which could have been used to help the displaced persons of the militancy-hit areas and to generate job opportunities for hundreds of people in those areas.

Baig quoted Patterson, as saying, “We fully understand the religious sentiments of Muslims, but at the same time, the suicide bombings and extremism too do not depict what Islam preaches. The US is ready to give economic assistance to help eradicate this menace.”

He told her that the US must engage with all the political players in Pakistan, as the war on terror could only be fought collectively, while adding that until and unless the people supported this war, armed forces would not be able to win for Pakistan or the international community. (ANI)
