Admiral Mehta commissions fifth Landing Ship Tank ‘Airavat’

Visakhapatnam, May 19 (ANI): Navy Chief Admiral Sureesh Mehta on Tuesday commissioned Indian Navy’s fifth Landing Ship Tank (Large) ‘Airavat’ here.

On the occasion, Mehta said the Airavat would augment the operational capabilities and reach of the Eastern Naval Command, in addition to enhancing the amphibious and disaster relief potential of the fleet.

Airavat, previously known as Yard 3016, was christened and launched by Maria Teresa Mehta in Kolkata on March 27 2006.

The ship was formally handed over to the Indian Navy on March 30, 2009 at Kolkata’s M/s Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited.

Airavat is the fifth LST (L) of the Indian Navy and third of the Shardul class. As a platform designed for amphibious operations against the enemy, it is a further upgrade on the Magar Class (the First LST (L)) in its suite of weapons, sensors and indigenous content.

With a significantly enhanced Weapon package, latest Control Systems and better Habitability conditions, Airavat delivers considerable punch and amphibious capabilities to the fighting prowess of the Indian Navy.

The ship can carry 10 Main Battle Tanks, 11 Combat Trucks and 500 Troops and has a considerable range and endurance at sea.

Besides undertaking amphibious operations, the ship is a potent assault platform capable of operating both Seaking 42C and the indigenous Dhruv helicopters.

It is fitted with two indigenous WM 18A Rocket Launchers to support successful amphibious operations. The threat from air is dealt with through two indigenous CRN 91 Anti-Aircraft Guns auto-controlled by Optronic Sights and shoulder launched IGLA Surface to-Air Missiles.

It also has soft kill ability through Chaff Rockets, which can be used to clutter the sensory inputs of an incoming enemy aircraft or missile.

The ship is fitted with Remote Propulsion Control, Battle Damage Control System and Automated Power Management System. These are fully integrated, microprocessor based, digital control systems for providing control and for monitoring ships machinery and systems.

The ship also has a microprocessor based anti-roll Flume Stabilisation System and Smoke Curtains to impede spreading of smoke and toxic gases in case of fire onboard.

In addition, the ship can act as a Fleet tanker through stern refueling of other naval vessels and as a hospital ship. The ship can be effectively tasked for Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) missions during natural calamities like tsunami, cyclone, earthquake etc, and can operate independently at high seas for as long as 45 days. EU split over upgraded Israel relationship

Luxembourg – The European Union faced an embarrassing split on Monday over the question of whether or not to upgrade the bloc’s relationship with Israel, as officials from the bloc’s political leadership and executive traded accusations. The row pits the EU’s foreign affairs commissioner, Benita Ferrero-Waldner, against the current head of the council of EU member states, outgoing Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek.

Topolanek “does not know the council’s conclusions. He should read the council conclusions,” Ferrero-Waldner told journalists ahead of a meeting with EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg on Monday.

A year ago, Israel asked the EU to upgrade their relationship by boosting ties in areas such as trade and research. EU member states approved the request in June.

But Israel’s Gaza offensive, its continued construction of settlements in formerly Palestinian areas and the equivocal comments by its new government on the two-state solution have led to calls for caution in many European capitals.

On Thursday, Ferrero-Waldner said that “we do not believe that the time is right to go beyond the current level of relations: too much remains unclear at this current point in time.”

She pointed out that EU member states concluded in December that the upgrade can only be conceived “in the context of Israeli-Palestinian conflict.”

But on Sunday, Topolanek told the Ha’aretz newspaper that he was “strongly critical” of the commissioner’s “really hasty” comment.

The decision whether to strengthen ties between the EU and Israel is “a political decision to be taken by the council (of EU member states). I’m still president of the council, and I should know something about it,” he said.(dpa)

Barack Obama has yet to get his spy-proof BlackBerry

Washington, Apr 25 (ANI): Contrary to previous rumors, President Barack Obama hasn’t gotten his super-secure BlackBerry.

According to The Washington Times, the American leader will have to long for his souped-up smartphone for a little while, and has instead been forced to use an ungainly hybrid.

As for the reason why it is so: the National Security Agency still needs a few months to test out its replacement: a souped-up BlackBerry 8830 equipped with software called SecurVoice made by Washington, D.C.-based The Genesis Key, Inc, reports FOX News.

“We’re going to put his BlackBerry back in his hand,” Genesis Key chairman Steven Garrett told the Washington Times.

Engineers from BlackBerry maker Research In Motion, based in Waterloo, Ontario, have helped with the upgrade.

The president was forced to give up his unsecured BlackBerry after Inauguration Day, amid concerns that its communications and e-mail would be intercepted by foreign governments or hackers.

In the interim, Obama has been using a patchwork of two devices, a BlackBerry and an NSA-supplied secure handheld device known as Sectera Edge. (ANI)

United Airlines to charge obese fliers for two seats

New York, April 16 (ANI): The next time you go to buy a United Airlines ticket make sure you’re not overweight, for having an extra-wide body could cost you two seats, that’s the new policy of the third-largest U.S. carrier.

Flight attendants will search for passengers who can’t buckle the seat belts or put their armrests down.

United Airlines wrote on its Web site: those deemed too fat to fly “must either purchase a ticket for an additional seat, or purchase an upgrade to a cabin with seats that address the above-listed scenarios.”

In case no other seats are available on that flight, the overweight flier will be grounded until two adjacent seats can be found on the next plane out.

“It’s discrimination. I understand if a person takes space from another, they should pay extra. But not an entire second seat,” the New York Daily News quoted Jack Gillotto, a 300-pounder from Danbury, Conn., as he waited for a flight at LaGuardia Airport, as saying.

Juan Rivera, who goes by ‘El Gordo” because he weighs 230 pounds and stands just 5-feet-2, said: “That affects me, as an overweight person. I don’t feel like I should pay for being bigger.”

However, United Airlines said that the rule is in response to the 700-plus complaints it received last year about obese travellers invading neighbours’ space.

United spokeswoman Robin Urbanski Janikowski said: “This will apply after all other solutions are exhausted. Should the flight be full, which is rare in today’s economy … we will offer the second seat on another flight at the same fare that was originally paid.” (ANI)

She wanted to give women edge with education

Paramjit Kaur Gulshan is contesting the ensuing polls from Faridkot (reserved) Lok Sabha seat as Bathinda has been made a general constituency.

PROMISES GALORE: She promised to uplift the status of women in backward areas of Bathinda and Mansa districts through education. Her election agenda also included fight against female foeticide, setting up of an information technology institute and a modern hospital, improvement of economic conditions of farmers, weaker sections and traders and completion of Bathinda refinery to generate employment. Gulshan also promised to provide potable water to the residents, railway overbridges in Bathinda, Mansa, Rampura and Budhlada and revival of closed spinning and sugar mills.

WHAT SHE DELIVERED: Released liberal grants in education sector for infrastructural development from her MPLAD funds. Out of the sanctioned Rs 10 crore in five years, Gulshan released almost 100 per cent MPLAD funds, with only Rs 1 lakh being unutilised. She also released Rs 10.1-lakh MPLAD funds that were carried forward to her from her predecessor. Being member of the Railways Parliamentary Committee, she upgraded Bathinda railway station, was instrumental in starting Bathinda to Dhuri train and got Jammu-Ferozepur train route extended up to Bathinda. She also claimed to have got approval for railway under- and overbridges for Bathinda. Â

WHERE SHE FAILED: Information technology institute is nowhere in sight, modern hospital is still a distant dream and there has not been much improvement in the economic conditions of farmers and weaker sections. She did little to revive closed spinning and sugar mills.

ATTENDANCE IN LOK SABHA: Out of total 332 sittings in 15 sessions, Gulshan attended 226, which means her attendance was 68 per cent.

NUMBER OF QUESTION ASKED OR ISSUES TAKEN UP: Asked 21 questions on allocation of funds under the Prime Minister Rozgaar Yojana (PMRY), construction of ROBs, closure of industrial units, admission of SC/ST candidates to IITs and IIMs, filling of reserved quotas seats for SC/ST students, rural development projects, pending application for agricultural import,

subsidy on fertilisers, Bathinda refinery, payment of arrears to employees, funds under welfare schemes and grant for upgrade of urban

infrastructure.

OPINION: “She is an upright and honest person. The two politicians I admire are Paramjit Kaur Gulshan and Manpreet Badal. But at the same time I feel that they should be more expressive in airing their views,” says social activist Jagmohan Kaushal.

“Gulshan has done nothing for Bathinda. Cases of female foeticide are still being reported,” says Dr Vitull Gupta, human rights activist.

The computer helper: Intel’s new i7 chips – Core 7

The computer helper: Intel's new i7 chips Washington – Move over, Core 2 Duo. Move over, Core 2 Quad. Intel’s new i7 processor is showing up in new computers around the world. Intel is billing the i7 as “the best desktop processor in the world,” and indeed it offers some substantial improvements – in both speed and architecture – over previous models. But is the i7 worth your money? Will it make help you get your work done faster? And will it make your current PC obsolete? Read on for some answers.

Q: What’s new about the i7?

A: A lot. The i7 was designed from the ground up with speed and energy efficiency in mind. To maximise speed, the i7 includes an new, integrated memory controller that does away with the reliance of previous chips on the so-called “front side bus,” and in its place is a new data transmission channel dubbed QuickPath, which can transmit information at up to 25 gigabytes per second, depending upon chip version.

The first i7s out the door are quad-core designs, and all four cores are integrated onto the same piece of silicon for the first time to increase efficiency. Each core can process two instructions at once – a technology known as multithreading. Thanks to multithreading, each i7 processor looks like eight separate processing units to the operating system.

The i7s also introduce a new type of overclocking called “turbo boost.” Essentially, turbo boost temporarily pushes the performance of individual cores when a program requires it, squeezing more speed out of the chip than it normally provides. Thus chips can push themselves when processing demands are heavy, and they can throttle back to stock speeds under normal computing loads.

For power management and efficiency, the i7 includes a dedicated core that monitors power use, ensuring that the chip balances efficiency with suitable power usage.

Currently there are only three i7 chips available. The i7 920 runs each core at 2.66 GHz and is the most reasonably priced of the three – retailing for under 300 dollars. The i7
940 ups the clock rate per core to 2.93 GHz, but the price of this new chip almost doubles. At the very high end, Intel has the i7 Extreme Edition 965, which runs each core at
3.2 GHz and supports the highest QuickPath transmission speeds.

Q: How much faster are the new chips than today’s core 2 quad chips?

A: Significantly. For standard computing applications as well as processor-intensive video, graphics, and multimedia work, the top-of-the-line i7 processors are up to 64 per cent faster than best-of-breed chips from AMD or former-generation quad core chips from Intel itself.

There is one exception, however: games. The i7 provides little to no performance boost to many of today’s 3D games, mostly because current games do not take advantage of the multithreading technology that the i7 incorporates. Newer games should benefit more from the i7.

Q: Can I upgrade my current dual core processor with an i7?

A: No. The i7 processors use a different socket than today’s dual-core and quad-core processors. The i7 processor itself is larger than previous generation core 2 duo and core 2 quad chips. The larger size is necessary to accommodate the integrated memory controller and other features of the chip.

So if you wanted to upgrade your existing PC to use an i7, at the least you would have to purchase a new chip and a new motherboard – and either have the pair installed or, if you are tech savvy, install the combo yourself. Realistically you would probably also have to purchase new system memory. The i7 relies on DDR3 memory (RAM), which is not found in many systems today. The is the type of upgrade that would necessitate the purchase of an entirely new computer for most users.

Q: Are there both dual-core and quad-core i7 chips?

A: No. The i7 is a quad-core only processor, at least for now. It’s doubtful that a dual-core design will be produced. Four cores – and more – are clearly the future.

Q: If I’m buying a new computer, should I look for one with an i7 processor or look for good deals on machines with older processors?

A: In a period when the tech industry is moving to a new processor architecture, it’s usually not a good idea to look for deals on older technology. That’s because your upgrade path with the older technology will have a shorter lifespan, and the useful lifespan of your equipment may be lessened.

What’s more, the low-end i7 processor is priced competitively with today’s dual core and quad core processors, so you should not face a prohibitively higher price by going with the new technology. In the near term, however, the i7 chips are likely to be marketed in higher end computers. You should start to see prices of i7-based PCs moderate by the middle of this year.

Q: Can I get an i7 in a notebook computer?

A: No. Currently i7 processors are desktop-only. The new i7 chips generate a good deal of heat. Intel has stated that mobile versions of the chip should appear late this year.
