Taliban back to terror business from new stronghold near Mardan-Swat Highway

Islamabad, Sep.16 (ANI): The Taliban’s threat has still not subsided in the Swat and Malakand Divisions as the security forces have found that the extremists have created a new stronghold in the region and are planning strikes from there.

According to senior officials, the Taliban, after being forced to retreat following the military operation, have shifted their base to the rough terrains between Batkhela and Jalala on the Mardan-Swat Highway and trying to regroup.

“It is from here that they are building their arms arsenals, training camps, logistics and propaganda centres,” officials said.

Over 200 people in the region have received handwritten and typed death threats in the past fortnight which proves that the Taliban is alive and kicking here.

“We are aware of how you assist security agencies and act against Islam. You are going to face the wrath of God,” one of the letter stated.

One of such threat mail has also been received by former North West Frontier Province (NWFP) Minister, Kamal Shah, who said the extremists have taken refuge in Shergarh, Batkhela, Chakdara, Iroshah, Shakh Number Panch, Jabban Road, Palai Sherkhanai, Sakhakot, Jalala and other villages on the Highway and are waiting to strike.

Security officials said they are aware of the development and the threat mails being sent by the Taliban. They said steps are being taken to thwart any untoward incident and block the supplies of arms and ammunition to the extremists.

“We are on their heels and are making all efforts to block arms and ammunition supplies to them from the channels developed by Taliban through Mohmand Agency, the adjoining areas of Malakand like Palai Sherkhani and Jabban Iroshah Road,” The News quoted a senior official, as saying. (ANI)

Fazlullah injured, top Taliban commanders killed in Swat: Malik

Islamabad, July 14 (ANI): Pakistan’s Interior Minister Rehman Malik has said that several top commanders of the Taliban have been killed and Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) leader Fazlullah was among those injured during the military operation in Swat and Malakand Division.

“Our security forces have successfully contained the situation and targeted the extremist commanders. Most of the top commanders were killed and Fazalullah was injured,” he told reporters here.

Discussing the situation in Swat, he said the enemies of Pakistan have been evicted from the area. However, he added, there were still some pockets of dissidents in the NWFP.

“The cancer of terrorism has negatively affected both our economy and the law and order situation. Islamabad police have managed to arrest 31 people, including suicide bombers, handlers and planners, and averted six suicide attacks during the last six months. These bombers are in police custody,” Malik added.

Malik said the terrorists arrested by the police belonged to South Waziristan, adding some were from Buner and Rawalpindi.

Replying to questions, he said the Pakistan Army is working for Pakistan and there is strong coordination between the military establishment and the civilian government.

The Daily Times quoted him as saying that the government was maintaining a close watch over the remnants of the Taliban in Swat to ensure no untoward incident occurs in the country.

All four provincial governments are doing their best to foil terrorist activities, he said. Malik said conspiracies against Pakistan would not succeed due to the bravery and valour of the nation’s armed forces and law enforcement agencies. (ANI)

BJP backs Varun politically and legally: Rajnath Singh

Etah (Uttar Pradesh), April 6 (IANS) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would take the issue of the ‘harassment and torture’ of its jailed Pilibhit candidate Varun Gandhi to the people, party president Rajnath Singh said Monday after meeting him.

‘We back Varun, who is being harassed and tortured by the state government. Let the law takes it own course but we want to make it clear we will support Varun politically and legally,’ Rajnath Singh told reporters after his meeting with Varun Gandhi, behind bars for his alleged inflammatory campaign speeches that have also led to the Mayawati government invoking the National Security Act (NSA) against him.

The BJP president said the party would not sit quiet over the issue and would take it to the ‘people of India’.

Rajnath Singh said he inquired about Varun Gandhi’s health and alleged that Varun had been falsely implicated and booked under NSA.

‘The CD showing Varun making hate speeches are doctored. He (Varun) has been saying this. Action against Varun has been taken in haste. Before taking any action against Varun, the government must have conducted a thorough inquiry.”

Rajnath Singh ignored questions on whether BJP’s prime ministerial candidate L.K. Advani and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi would meet Varun Gandhi in the Etah jail in the coming days.

Police officials said the meeting lasted for around 30 minutes.

‘A doctor had gone along with Rajnath Singh to meet Varun after taking the necessary permission from the district administration,’ police inspector Nawaab Singh said.

After meeting Varun Gandhi, Rajnath Singh headed to the Ramlila ground in Etah to address a public meeting.

During his Etah visit, he is also expected to target BJP’s rebel Kalyan Singh, who has announced that he would contest the Lok Sabha elections from the seat.

Unwilling to take any chances, the district administration in Etah, 300 km from the state capital Lucknow, had said it planned to videograph the Rajnath Singh-Varun Gandhi meeting for security reasons.

‘We are all prepared to prevent any untoward incident. Additional security has been deployed in the district ahead of the meeting,’ said Etah district magistrate Gaurav Dayal.

The Uttar Pradesh government had on March 29 invoked the NSA against Varun Gandhi – the BJP’s Lok Sabha candidate from Pilibhit – for his hate speeches and the mob violence that erupted during his arrest the previous day.

On April 1, he was shifted from Pilibhit to Etah jail, 300 km away, due to ‘security concerns’ cited by the state government.

Earlier, several party leaders, including M. Venkaiah Naidu, Kalraj Mishra and BJP state president Ramapati Ram Tripathi, had met Varun Gandhi.

Patrolling increased on Indo-Nepal border

Keeping in the view the coming Lok Sabha polls scheduled on May 13 in Uttarakhand, the state police have planned to beef up security at the Indo-Nepal border. Speaking to Hindustan Times, Ashok Kumar, IG (Kumaon) said, “In a bid to rule out any untoward incident along with Indo-Nepal border, security has been beefed up in the region.

We have also planned to erect several barricades in border areas to keep an eye on suspects during election time.” Three districts of the state including Pithoragarh, Champawat and Udham Singh Nagar share 240-kilometer long international border with Nepal.

“The police have to directed to intensify patrolling in areas which are closer to the Indo- Nepal border. We have also intensified hunt for criminals against who non-bailable warrants have been issued in their respective areas.

More than 200 such criminals have been put behind the bars so far,” added Kumar. The Inspector general said the border will be completely sealed on May 13, the day the polling is scheduled.

Meanwhile, Sashatra Seema Bal (SSB) which is deployed by the Central government to look after security at the border has also intensified patrolling. Sources said SSB personnel have started to carry out comprehensive checking drive at the border outposts adjacent to the international boundary

With Advani in fray, cops in Gandhinagar on their toes

The Gandhinagar police are leaving no stone unturned to ensure that no untoward incident takes place during the visit of VVIPs, especially BJP’s prime ministerial candidate L K Advani, who is contesting the Lok Sabha elections from this constituency.

The senior BJP leader has been provided with Z-plus security.

Gandhinagar DySP Piyush Patel told mediapersons here on Wednesday that the local police, assisted by other security agencies, would carry out extensive anti-sabotage checks.

They will set up check points across the state capital and other places in the district before any VVIP arrives to address election meetings, he added.

Patel said the police have made preventive detention of about 4,000 people from across the district since March 2, when the Election Commission announced the dates for the polls.

Among the detainees are 391 people against whom non-bailable warrants were issued, while about 20 were absconders.

He said of the total 785 licensed weapons in the district, 520 have already been deposited with the police. About 200 VIPs, including MLAs, MPs, ministers and bureaucrats, in Gandhinagar possess licensed firearms.

Some of them have sought exemption from depositing their weapons with the police.

“We are still considering their request,” Patel said.

200 km may prove too far a distance

By booking him under the National Security Act (NSA), the Uttar Pradesh Government took Varun Gandhi out of public sight, but not really out of public mind. In shifting him from the Pilibhit district jail last night, it seems to be hoping to achieve that.

Since his surrender on Saturday in the case of making inflammatory speeches, Varun has been getting a steady stream of visitors at the Pilibhit jail. Apart from mother Maneka Gandhi, who is contesting from neighbouring Lok Sabha seat of Aonla, they included supporters who would drop in daily, followed by the inevitable TV cameras.

With the Etah jail where he has been taken 200 km away, Maneka, in the middle of her campaign, and others may not find it as easy to visit Varun daily. TV cameras may stay but, with no one coming, not for too long, predicts the administration.

Incidentally, Etah jail is the only one in the state which has got an ISO 9001-2000 certification and no untoward incident has been reported from here the past three years, says Jail Superintendent Viresh Raj. However, the jail is bursting at the seams with 1,552 inmates against a capacity of 630.

“Varun’s stay in Pilibhit jail was causing law and order problems. Free and fair elections would not have been possible if he stayed there,” DGP Vikram Singh said, adding that the District Magistrate of Pilibhit had sought the permission of the Election Commission to shift Varun.

A senior BJP leader said Chief Minister Mayawati must have also borne in mind that leaving Varun in the thick of things could swing votes in favour of the BJP on nearby seats, besides Pilibhit.

“The BSP wants to crush emerging leaders of other parties and for this, it is misusing the government machinery. It invoked the NSA only to demoralise the party and brought Varun to Etah jail to restrict his supporters from reaching out to him. But the popularity of a politician cannot be checked like this,” said Uttar Pradesh BJP leader Kalraj Mishra.

On Wednesday, the VHP held a bandh in Pilibhit, Bareilly and nearby areas to protest the slapping of the NSA on Varun. There were no untoward incidents. While most of the markets remained closed, the traffic was unaffected.

Senior BJP leaders to meet Varun Gandhi in Etah jail

Lucknow, April 2 (IANS) A delegation of senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders will meet Varun Gandhi, the party’s candidate from Uttar Pradesh’s Pilibhit constituency, in the Etah jail Thursday afternoon, a party official said.

‘Former BJP president M. Venkaiah Naidu, party spokesperson Balbir Punj, state president Ramapati Ram Tripathi and others will meet Varun Gandhi at about 3 p.m.,’ H.N. Dixit, spokesperson of the state BJP unit, told IANS.

During the meeting, the party leaders will discuss their poll strategy in Pilibhit.

Security in Etah district has been strengthened ahead of the arrival of the BJP leaders.

‘We have deployed two companies of the PAC (Provincial Armed Constabulary) and RAF (Rapid Action Force) to check any kind of violence and untoward incident,’ said police inspector Nawaab Singh.

Several barricades have been put up along the routes leading to the jail, added Singh.

Varun Gandhi was early Wednesday shifted from the prison in Pilibhit to a jail in Etah, an official said.

The Mayawati government had late Sunday invoked the National Security Act (NSA) against him for his reported hate speeches and mob violence during his arrest Saturday.

Charlie Chaplin’s statue causes controversy in Mangalore

Mangalore, Mar. 16 (ANI): A statue of Hollywood’s most famous comedian Charlie Chaplin has sparked controversy in Karnataka.

Some radical activists protested against the construction of the statue, which was being set up for a dance sequence of a film called ‘House Full’, saying that they would not let a statue of a Christian actor to be built near the temple.

The Chaplin statue was being set-up up near a temple at the Ottinene beach near Udupi, but some locals along with Jagrana Vedike activists halted the construction.

“He is a Christian and does not belong to this region. There was a historic character called Tenali Rama in Vijayanagar kingdom of the state many years ago. If they make his statue and erect it we have no problem but why his (Chaplin) statue? We do not want it here,” noted Harish, a local.

Although the objection by the locals made the film unit to abandon their erection of the of Charlie Chapin statue plans, but in the absence of formal complaint, no case has been registered so far.

“The public objected to the excavation of the earth for installing the statue. The film people stopped the work and went back. Since no untoward incident as such taken place, so no case has been lodged,” said Gopal Hosur, Inspector General of Police, Mangalore.

The statue was to be set up an estimated cost of 3.5 million rupees.

Earlier, Jagrana Vedike was alleged to be involved in an attack on a Christian school in Karnataka in 2008. (ANI)

Tibetan women in exile to continue their “Free Tibet” fight

Dharamsala, Mar 12 (ANI): Hundreds of Tibetan women in exile marked 50 years of their failed uprising against the Chinese on Thursday (March 12) by resolving to continue their “Free Tibet” fight and return to their homeland.

Women of regional Tibetan women’s association (RTWA), schoolgirls and Buddhist monks commemorated the National Tibetan Women’s uprising day by staging a protest march while raising slogans and holding banners against the Chinese Government.

“Its a very important for me and all Tibetan particularly Tibetan women who have so far suffered a lot in exile and even women inside Tibet, for not having freedom, freedom to express, freedom to start and promote our religious and cultural integrity,” said Dolma, a Tibetan woman refuge.

Every year on the 12th of March Tibetan women in exile mark their contribution to the freedom movement.

Tibetan exiles staged demonstration outside United Nations office in New Delhi and submitted a memorandum demanding seizure of untoward activities on women in Lhasa.

“Today is 12th March and today is Tibetan women’s uprising day. In 1959 on 12th March, thousands of Tibetan women protested peacefully outside the Portola palace and today we protested here outside United Nations, to appeal to the United Nations to talk to communist China to immediately seize the violent action against Tibetan women such as assault, torture, rape, unlawful detentions, and government sanctions act for violence against Tibetan women,” said Tenzin, one of the organisers of the protest.

In a statement released on Thursday, the Tibetan Women’s Association said that even a year after the peaceful 2008 uprising in Tibet, over six thousand Tibetans were still imprisoned and over four thousand were missing. Two hundred people died during the military clampdown.

On March 10, 1959, Chinese authorities quashed an uprising led by the Dalai Lama, which forced him – and many Buddhist men and women – to flee Tibet.

The Dalai Lama marked his 50 years in exile on Tuesday (March 10) by demanding “meaningful autonomy” for his Tibetan homeland, where Chinese authorities tightened security to stifle protests against their rule.

Tibet, and ethnic Tibetan areas in neighbouring provinces of China, are under a security clampdown aimed at stifling protest against Chinese rule.

Tibetans across the globe are marking this week with anti-China protests, demonstrations, photo exhibitions and book launches to look back at 50 years of their failed uprising and ponder over the future course of action. (ANI)
