Kobe Bryant finding it tough to take it easy after surgery

(Reuters) – Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant is finding it hard to take it easy in the NBA off-season after having arthroscopic surgery on his right knee.

The twice NBA Finals MVP made a fourth trip to China in as many years this week to meet fans in the basketball-crazy nation, where he sells more shirts than the country’s own Yao Ming.

“The hardest thing for me to do is to do nothing,” he told Tuesday’s China Daily newspaper in an interview.

“I have always got to be working and pushing myself. This summer is really the best training for me — to do nothing.

“The body needs rest and the injury has to heal. You have to recharge your body and get ready for next season. So in lots of ways, this is the hardest training for me.”

Bryant started his five-city tour of China with an audience with some 1,600 basketball fans in Beijing late on Monday. A thousand more waited outside the theater in sweltering heat just hoping for a glimpse.

Despite having surgery on the same knee for the third time after 2003 and 2006, he assured the noisy audience he would be fit for his bid for a sixth NBA title with the Lakers.

“Another NBA championship ring next season is the biggest motivation for me,” he told the paper.

“It’s the same for us every year. We will not change much. We have the unity and the majority of the team is the same. So, it’s the same goal for us every year.”

Although retirement is still a long way away for the 31-year-old guard, Bryant has clearly given thought to what he does not want to do when his playing days are over — coach.

“No. Absolutely not. No, no, no,” he said.

“Being a coach is too frustrating for me. I like coaching kids and holding training clinics for the kids. But to be a coach from the regular season to the playoffs … I have no interest at all.”

Soccer-World-Cup plays key role in South Africa rebrand: Jordaan

July 10 (Reuters) – The World Cup has played a key role in the rebranding of the country and forging unity among South Africans, 2010 World Cup chief executive Danny Jordaan said on Saturday.

In a media briefing in Sandton on the impact of the World Cup, Jordaan said the organising committee had five objectives which have enabled the country to be rebranded positively, leave a sense of pride and achieve social cohesion among black and white South Africans.

“(We have achieved the) rebranding of the country. People look at South Africa with new eyes and new understanding and now embrace people of this country,” Jordaan said.

He told a news conference the objective of nation building and social cohesion were achieved by soccer’s biggest tournament as black and whites celebrated the tournament side by side at fan parks and stadiums.

“It was a moment of special unity,” he said.

Jordaan, who hopes that the World Cup will have a powerful impact in bringing the races together in a country where they are still often divided, said South African people have felt a sense of pride and have walked tall during the tournament.

He said this was an incredible benefit after they were told for many years that they were inferior.

World Cup organisers also hoped that the tournament would increase tourism and strengthen the investment case for South Africa.

Jordaan said the World Cup has created 115,000 jobs for the poor and has provided them with skills that they could use in expected future infrastructure investment in the country.

South Africa estimates tourism will add 10 billion rand ($1.32 billion) to the economy, almost 10 times what the hosts spent on marketing in the past four years.

Overall, the hosts spent about 40 billion rand on the one-month event but Jordaan said the social benefits were far greater than the investment.

“What we cannot quantify is the generation of pride in South Africa as a nation, the unity, the sharing of a single vision,” Jordaan said, adding that these must be mobilised to address social ills facing the country such as health, education and poverty.

‘Shell shocked’ Ajmal vows revenge from Hussey for ICC WC semifinal humiliation

Karachi, May 20 (ANI): Pakistan off spinner Saeed Ajmal has still not been able to get over the smashing that middle order Australian batsman Michael Hussey gave him during the final over of the second semi-final of the ICC World T20 Championship in Caribbean, as he has vowed to give Hussey a fitting reply the next time both teams meet.

Ajmal said he would never forget the last over in which Hussey clobbered him all around the Beausejour Stadium, St Lucia hitting 18 runs therby winning the game and ensuring a berth in the final of the tournament.

“I don’t know what happened because I was confident I would not let them score 18 runs in the final over but it was just my bad day and Hussey’s day. He played the innings of his life. But I’m confident that I’ll take his wicket the next time we play against Australia,” The News quoted Ajmal, as saying.

Meanwhile, veteran all rounder Abdul Razzaq said that being over-confident after posting a huge total of 191 runs, was one of the prime reasons behind Pakistan’s loss against Australia.

“We relaxed a bit too early against Australia. But overall our performance was good because the players backed each other and there was unity in the team.” Razzaq said. (ANI)

Football world cup to be South Africa’s ‘defining moment’

Johannesburg, April 22 (IANS) The 2010 FIFA World Cup to be held in South Africa will be the country’s ‘defining moment’, a top official has said.

With just 50 days left before the soccer extravaganza kicks off, preparations are on in full swing, said Danny Jordaan, chief executive officer of the local organising committee.

This defining moment will last a full month, a moment where the attention of the world will be nowhere but right here in South Africa,’ Jordaan was quoted as saying by BuaNews Wednesday.

‘I call on all South Africans to get involved in the World Cup because this is our tournament. We must remember that a huge part of the success of the World Cup relies on how all South Africans host the world this year. It is up to every one of us to make sure that we show all the visitors and the global television audience the warmth, friendship and unity of South Africa,’ he said.

President Jacob Zuma has LAO called on all South Africans to rally behind the national soccer team, popularly known by its nickname Bafana Bafana.

Bafana Bafana has been drawn in a tough group that includes Mexico and 1998 champions France but the national team will go beyond the first round of the tournament, Zuma said.

Karachi, Mar.24 (ANI): Rejecting reports about infighting and factionalism within the team, newly appointed Pakistan T20 captain Shahid Afridi has expressed the hope that his squad would defend their ICC T20 World Championship title in West Indies.

Afridi, who was appointed skipper for the upcoming tournament which would commence from April 30 in the Caribbean, said there is no truth on reports of rifts among players in the team.

“A lot of people have been talking about our team lacking unity but I don’t agree with them. I’m confident that all the boys will bond well together and as captain I’ll try to get the best out of them,” Afridi said.

“The Twenty20 World Cup is a very important assignment for us. I’m confident that we will defend the title,” he added.

The flamboyant all rounder said his team has got the talent to lift the coveted trophy once again and repeat the success of 2009.

Veteran all-rounder Abdul Razzaq, who was also in the running for the captaincy, backed Afridi, saying he has no ill-feelings for his skipper.

Western envoys expect run-off in Afghanistan election

Paris, Sep. 3 (ANI): Western envoys to Afghanistan have said that their respective governments should “be prepared for a run-off” in the Afghanistan presidential election if too many votes are ruled “irregular.”

If no candidate gets more than 50 percent of the vote, a run-off between the top two vote getters will be held. The latest results show that incumbent president Hamid Karzai has 47.3 percent of the vote with more than 60 percent of the ballots counted.

The meeting of German, French, British, UN, and US envoys to Afghanistan here was regarded as a show of unity and support in the midst of an Afghan mission seen as unpopular in Europe and dubbed by some US media as “Mr. Obama’s war.”

In European circles, the meeting was also seen as an effort to pressure Afghan President Karzai in the wake of some 1,000 complaints of ballot stuffing and fraud now under review, and to garner support for US efforts to target of irregular election behavior and corruption, the Christian Science Monitor reports.

Hosted by French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner, the gathering also included British envoy Sir Sherard Cowper-Coles, Germany’s Bernd Mutzelburg, US envoy Richard Holbrooke, Karl Eide of the UN, and 22 other representatives.

The Afghanistan Election Commission is now going through nearly 1,000 complaints, of which 600 have been addressed, the envoys said – predicting they would finish the process by September 17. (ANI)

Our relation with BJP is that of mother and child: Bhagwat

New Delhi, Aug 28 (ANI): Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh Chief Mohan Bhagwat said on Friday that the relation between the RSS and the BJP is like that of a mother and a child.

Addressing a press conference at the Sangh headquarters here, Bhagwat said, “Our relation with BJP is like mother and child. Now, the child has become elder, and it is capable of taking its own decisions.”

Bhagwat said if the BJP asks for any suggestion of the RSS, it will give, ” If they want any help to reconstruct the party, we will certainly help them, but they have to ask for that.”

Responding to a question, Bhagwat said that the Sangh’s commitment’s to the building of the Ram temple in Ayodhya is intact.

“In 90s, we assured Ram Mandir Andolan leaders that the Sangh will stand with it in building a temple in Ayodhya, and we are still committed on it, we will take the Andolan till we construct the temple at the same site,” he said.

Rejecting the formation of two streams of thoughts in RSS ranks, Bhagwat said: “I don’t see any such deviation.”

” We expect our swayamsevaks (volunteers) to be committed to one nation and one culture, if any one goes beyond this thinking we will not consider him as Swayamsevak,” Bhagwat said.

“Sangh never considered power as ultimate way to achieve the ideological commitment, but power is also a mean to achieve it,” he said.

Bhagwat said it is for the BJP to decide on their way forward, and RSS will not dictate it.

Regarding RSS -Muslim relations, he said there are many Muslim workers who are also regularly attending Shakhas (Branches) and we haven’t stopped or restricted any one from coming to shakhas, “But I agree that the number is not visible at the higher level.”

Comparing the views of Sangh ideologue H.V.Sheshadri and the recent statement of former RSS chief Sudarshan on Jinnah, Bhagwat said, “They (Sheshadri and Sudarshan) did not praise Jinnah at all, they were evaluating a particular context in history with a scholarly touch.”

He also said that the banning of books represents a bad trend,

“We cannot stop others from having different thoughts. The RSS believes in taking all thoughts together in achieving national unity, Bhagwat said. Shreeraj Gudi (ANI)

Activists stage demonstration against irregularities in issuing social security cards

New Delhi, July 15(ANI): Activists of Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) held a demonstration in the national capital, on Wednesday over irregularities in the distribution of Below Poverty Line (BPL) social security cards.

Scores of SUCI activists marched to Delhi state secretariat, raising slogans against the government, alleging that Delhi government is laidback in issuing BPL cards.

“Today our main demand is that people of this (Delhi) region that are living Below Poverty Line (BPL) have not yet received BPL cards. Many people have applied for these cards but so many years have passed and they are yet to receive BPL cards,” said Pratap Samal, State Secretary of SUCI.

“People who have given cards for renewal have not received them back,” Samal added.

Meanwhile, a member of parliament belonging to SUCI alleged that BPL cards are being issued to people living above poverty line, which is a gross misuse of the facility.

“Taking the Below Poverty Line (BPL) cards there are lots of delay dealings, there are lots of corruption and there are nepotism. Those parties who are in power either in the state or the central government they are using these BPL cards for Above Poverty Line (APL).” said a member of parliament of SUCI.

“The real people are not getting the BPL facilities,” the member added.

BPL cardholders are entitled to get subsidised food grains from the government. (ANI)

Iran frees a British embassy employee, another still held

London, July 6 (ANI): One of the last two British Embassy employees, held in Iran on the alleged charges of being behind last month’s post-election violence in the country, has been released.

The British Foreign Office on Monday confirmed the news, but added that embassy’s chief political analyst Hossein Rassam is still under detention. ine staff were originally arrested after the disputed re-election of president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the street protests that followed. ritish Foreign Secretary David Miliband has launched a defence for Rassam, who is said by his lawyer to face trial for “acting against national security”.

“The allegations of improper conduct have absolutely no basis. (Rassam is) an honourable, patriotic Iranian, who has been working in a completely open and transparent way for the UK,” Miliband said.

“I think it is very, very important that we send a clear message that we are confident about the way he has been doing his job, that we are clear about our goal, which is his release, unharmed and also that there is unity across the international community,” he added.

Earlier, Tehran publicly accuses the UK of fomenting the unrest and a senior cleric said on Friday that some embassy staff, all Iranian, had “confessed” to playing a part and would face trial.

EU member states summoned the Iranian ambassadors to their countries to deliver co-ordinated warnings that the treatment of the British embassy staff was unacceptable.

The latest developments will be discussed today by Prime Minister Gordon Brown and French President Nicolas Sarkozy at an Anglo-French summit in Evian-les-Bains.

President Sarkozy has expressed “total” solidarity with Britain and urged stronger sanction against Iran “so that Iranian leaders will really understand that the path that they have chosen will be a dead end”. (ANI)

Four killed, 20 injured in W. China ethnic riots

Beijing, July 6 (ANI): At least four persons, including three civilians and a policeman, were killed, and 20 were injured in clashes on Sunday in a regional capital in western China after days of rising tensions between Muslim Uighurs and Han Chinese.

The rioting broke out Sunday afternoon in a large market area of Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang province, reports the New York Times.

It lasted for several hours before riot police officers and paramilitary or military troops locked down the Uighur quarter of the city.

Among the dead were three Han Chinese and one police officer.

Uighur men were led into nearby police stations with their hands behind their backs and shirts pulled over their heads, one witness said.

Early Monday, the local government announced a curfew banning all traffic in the city until 8 p.m.

The riot was the largest ethnic clash in China since the Tibetan uprising of March 2008, and perhaps the biggest protest in Xinjiang in years.

According to a Xinhua news report, initial investigation showed the World Uyghur Congress led by Rebiya Kadeer masterminded the unrest.

According to the government, the World Uyghur Congress has recently been instigating unrest via the Internet among other means, calling on the outlaws “to be braver” and “to do something big.”

Nur Bekri, chairman of the Xinjiang regional government, said in a televised speech Monday morning that the movement came after a conflict between Uygur and Han ethnic people in a toy factory in the southern Guangdong province on June 26.

Two Uygur workers were killed during the factory brawl, which was triggered by a sex assault by a Uygur worker toward a Han female worker. A total of 120 others of both Han and Uygur ethnic groups were injured.

Nur Bekri said some overseas opposition forces instigated Sunday’s unrest to undermine ethnic unity and social stability in the autonomous region.

“We should bear in mind that stability is to the greatest interest of all people in China, including the people in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region,” he said.(ANI)

CPI, SUCI activists protest against fuel price hike

New Delhi, July 3 (ANI): Activists of Communist party of India and Socialist Unity Centre of India staged demonstrations against the increase in prices of petrol and diesel here on Friday.

Shouting slogans against the ruling Congress party, protesters demanded the government to roll back the hike.

“The prices of essential commodities like vegetable, pulses, sugar, rice will increase due to hike in petrol and diesel prices as transportation will become expensive. This is a slap on the face of public who voted for Congress. We strongly condemn the fuel prices hike and ask the government to roll back the hike,” said Amarjeet Kaur, CPI’s state secretary.

The hike will aid margins for state-owned refiners forced to sell at government-set prices, and may be only a prelude to greater free-market price reforms in next week’s budget.

Activists of SUCI said that the fuel prices hike will increase the inflation rate.

“It is ironical that fuel prices have been hiked at a time when the government is announcing100 day agendas for the country. On one side the government is all set to come-up with packages to help capitalists overcome economic crisis and on the other hand it is increasing the inflation rate for the commoners,” said Pratap Samal, SUCI’s state secretary.

Fuel prices were last raised in June 2008, but they were cut in December and again in January as oil prices tumbled.

The crude oil prices have more than doubled since a February low, with second-quarter gains the highest since 1990.

Despite price increase, oil firms were likely to suffer a revenue loss of 560 billion rupees on sale of petrol, diesel, cooking gas and kerosene this fiscal. (ANI)

Partition of India weakened Muslims: MQM

Lahore, June 29 (ANI): MQM chief Altaf Hussain has said the partition of the Indian subcontinent in 1947 weakened Muslims, as it divided their power.

In an interview with Najam Sethi on Dunya News, Altaf said the partition harmed the Muslims, as a result of the formation of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, and divided their power into three parts.

He said there would have been no partition had the Congress accepted the Quaid-e-Azam’s 14 points.

Altaf said few people knew that even Allama Iqbal had not demanded the establishment of Pakistan in his famous Allahabad address in 1930.

“He had in fact demanded the creation of Muslim states in the Muslim majority areas,” he said, adding that Iqbal son Justice (r) Javed Iqbal could confirm this.

Altaf said that both Pakistan and India should learn a lesson from European countries and normalise their relations.

He said it was unfortunate that the ruling elite of India had always projected Pakistan as a threat to India while the Pakistani ruling elite had always ‘taught’ Pakistani masses that India was a threat to Pakistan.

He said several wars had been fought in Europe, including the First and Second World Wars, yet European countries had learnt a lesson from these wars and forged a unity, manifested in the European Union.

Altaf requested the Indian leadership and Pakistani establishment to follow the European example and work towards improving relations between the two countries. (ANI)
