July 22 (Reuters) – U.S. and South Korean plans to start large-scale joint military drills this month pose a major danger to the region, a North Korean diplomat said on Thursday.

“The decision to hold military drills is a major danger for the security of the region,” North Korean official Ri Tong-il, a member of Pyongyang’s delegation at a regional security forum in Hanoi, told reporters.

Clinton says Iran scientist free to come and go

(Reuters) – Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Tuesday that Iranian nuclear scientist Shahram Amiri had been free to come and go from the United States.

“Mr. Amiri has been in the United States of his own free will and he is free to go,” Clinton told reporters. “In fact he was scheduled to travel to Iran yesterday but was unable to make all of the necessary arrangements to reach Iran through a transit country,” she said.

Clinton called on Tehran to release three American hikers being held in Iran and to provide more information on former FBI agent Robert Levinson who disappeared during a business trip to Iran.

Referring to Amiri, Clinton said: “He’s free to go, he was free to come, these decisions are his alone to make.”

June 20 (Reuters) – Slovenia forward Nejc Pecnik is out of the World Cup after breaking his ankle in Friday’s 2-2 draw with the United States in Group C, the team’s doctor has said.

Pecnik came on as a second half substitute and was carried off on a stretcher in injury time after a collision with an opponent.

“Pecnik was taken to hospital immediately and the scan revealed a fractured ankle and ligament damage, meaning that he will return to Slovenia as quickly as possible,” Matjaz Vogrin told the Slovenian Football Association website (www.nzs.si).

Soccer-World-England to hold crisis meeting, says Terry

South Africa, June 20 (Reuters) – England’s misfiring World Cup squad is to hold a no-holds-barred crisis meeting with manager Fabio Capello on Monday evening, defender John Terry told reporters.

Terry said he expected the entire squad and Capello to review the team’s miserable performance in their uninspired 0-0 draw with Algeria on Friday evening.

“We are going to look at the whole 93 minutes and see where we went wrong,” said Terry. “And that means pretty much the whole lot of it.

“It is going to be a chance for everyone to get it off their chest and if that means a few players get upset then that is the way it is. We need to win the next game and we have to say ‘Sod it, let’s sort it out and show everyone what we can do’.”

England have just two points from their two Group C matches, having drawn their opener against the United States 1-1. They play table-topping Slovenia on Wednesday.

Euronav could benefit from BP spill – paper

June 15 (Reuters) – Belgian crude oil transporter Euronav (EUAV.BR) could end up benefiting from the BP (BP.L) oil spill if the United States needs to transport more oil, its finance chief said, according to Belgian daily De Tijd.

Energy | Industrials

“The image of the oil sector is bad, but for us it can be a good thing,” the paper quoted Hugo De Stoop as saying in a report published on Tuesday.

“The U.S. will probably have to import more oil from overseas areas like the Middle East. This will be done by ship. We can with our large and modern oil tankers play a major role.”

On Monday, BP said it aimed to nearly triple its oil-collecting capacity within a month to a maximum of 80,000 barrels a day in response to a U.S. demand that the company work faster to contain the gushing leak in the Gulf of Mexico. [ID:nN14207756] (Writing by Ben Deighton; Editing by Dan Lalor)

U.S. welcomes Israel inquiry on flotilla events

(Reuters) – The United States on Sunday welcomed Israel’s decision to begin an internal investigation into the events surrounding last month’s raid on a convoy of Gaza-bound aid ships.

Politics

A statement by White House spokesman Robert Gibbs called the proposal for the probe “an important step forward” and said Israel was capable of conducting a fair investigation into the deadly flotilla raid.

“But we will not prejudge the process or its outcome, and will await the conduct and findings of the investigation before drawing further conclusions,” the statement said.

Iran nuclear weapon is 1-3 years away: U.S.’s Gates

(Reuters) – It could be up to three years before Iran is capable of developing a nuclear weapon, U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said on Friday, adding that there was still time for the world to put pressure on Tehran. Asked how long the United States and its allies were prepared to wait for U.N. sanctions on Iran to bite, Gates said:

World

“I think that everybody agrees we have some more time, including the Israelis, and we will just continue to work it.

“Most people believe that the Iranians could not really have any nuclear weapons for at least another year or two. I would say the intelligence estimates range from one to three years.”

Even if Iran got that far, he said having nuclear weapons material was different to full “weaponization” or having a capable delivery system that could threaten neighbors or enemies further afield.

“But clearly them getting to the threshold of having the weapons is what concerns every body.”
