London Mayor blasted for asking Brits to fast like Muslims during Ramadan

London, Sep 5 (ANI): The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has been criticized for asking Brits to fast for a day so they would know what it is like to be a Muslim.

Johnson said people should starve themselves from dawn until dusk during Ramadan and then end their fast during a visit to their local mosque.

Steve Uncles, South East chairman of the English Democrats, blasted Johnson’s comments.

He said: “The indigenous culture of this country is based on Christianity and Paganism. Of course, as an open and tolerant society, if people want to practise other religions then good luck to them. But the state should not be funding them because otherwise we will lose our culture.”

Johnson, 45, was visiting the East London Mosque and London Muslim Centre when he made these comments, the Daily Star reported.

“Whether it’s in theatre, comedy, sports, music or politics, Muslims are challenging the traditional stereotypes and showing that they are, and want to be, a part of the mainstream community.

“That’s why I urge people, particularly during Ramadan, to find out more about Islam, increase your understanding and learning, even fast for a day with your Muslim neighbour and break your fast at the local mosque,” Johnson said.

He added: “There are valuable lessons that people of all backgrounds can learn from Islam, such as the importance of community spirit, family ties, compassion and helping those less fortunate, all of which lie at the heart of the teachings of Ramadan.” (ANI)

MJ’s father wants grandkids to be stars like their dad

Washington, July 11 (ANI): Michael Jackson’s father, Joe, wants his grandchildren to become superstar like their dad.

Joe Jackson is willing to share the custody of Price 12, Paris 11, and Blanket, 7 with his estranged wife Katharine, and raise them to be stars like the ‘Thriller’ hitmaker.

He insists that the pair should be allowed to raise the kids together.

“We should keep them all together and make them happy. And feed them like they’re supposed to be fed. And let them get rest… and grow up to be strong Jacksons,” Contactmusic quoted him as saying

Joe adds that at least two of the kids have the potential to follow in their father, uncles, and aunts’ footsteps.

“I keep watching Paris. She wants to do something… (and) Blanket can really dance,” he said. (ANI)

Chinese Himalayan tribe dads look after sisters’ kids instead of their own

Washington, June 20 (ANI): From the time humans came to being, males have been dubbed “bread-winners”.

Even in today’s times, a man is expected to look after the family and make decisions concerning financial matters. However, in the case of the Mosuo culture of the Chinese Himalaya, things are a bit different.

Men of the Mosuo do help to raise kids-just not their own. They help look after all the children born to their own sisters, aunts, and other women of the family.

Rather than “one father with a kid, it will be four or five uncles. That [father] role is shared among a number of people, and these are very large extended families,” explained John Lombard, director of the Lugu Lake Mosuo Cultural Development Association.

Lombard said: “If you [father] a child with another woman, you can never be absolutely sure that the child really shares your genes. But if your sister has a child, you can be 100 percent sure that the kid shares some of your genes.”

As far as women are concerned, they avoid marriage and raise their kids in homes with their entire extended families-but no dads, reports National Geographic News.

“They are a society that we know hasn’t had marriage for a thousand years, and they’ve been able to raise kids successfully,” said Stephanie Coontz, family studies professor at the Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington.

And women’s job is not just restricted to looking after kids, they head the households, make business decisions, and own property, which they pass on to their matrilineal heirs.

Shockingly, the Mosuo culture follows the tradition called the walking marriage – women invite men to visit their rooms at night-and to leave in the morning.

Women may also change partners as often as they like, and promiscuity carries no social stigma. (ANI)

Report: Obama to ease travel restrictions for Cuba

Washington – US President Barack Obama planned to ease travel and other restrictions to Cuba later Monday, allowing Cuban Americans to return home for longer periods in a reversal of former president George W Bush’s policies, US media reported. The new policy was due to be revealed ahead of Obama’s trip this week to a summit of North and South American leaders in Trinidad and Tobago, the Washington Post reported. The White House would not confirm the plans.

Obama has not pushed for lifting the decades-old trade embargo against Cuba, but has signalled that he wants to improve ties with the Communist island.

The much-anticipated announcement Monday would allow Cuba- Americans to visit relatives on the Caribbean island once a year and remain as long as they wish, as well as allowing them to send more money back home, the Washington Post reported.

The 2004 restrictions imposed by Bush limited visits to once every three years, for no more than two weeks, and excluded extended family, such as aunts, uncles and cousins.

Those restrictions were lifted temporarily last month by the US Congress, which cut off all funding for enforcing the travel limits until September.(dpa)
