The More Frequently You Log On, the More Weight You Can Keep Off

PORTLAND, Ore., July 27 /PRNewswire/ — The more people used an interactive weight management website, the more weight loss they maintained, according to a Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research study published online today in the Journal of Medical Internet Research.

The National Institutes of Health-funded study evaluated an Internet-based weight maintenance intervention involving 348 participants. Consistent website users who logged on and recorded their weight at least once a month for two-and-a-half years maintained the most weight loss, the study found.

“Consistency and accountability are essential in any weight maintenance program. The unique part of this intervention was that it was available on the Internet, whenever and wherever people wanted to use it,” said study lead author Kristine L. Funk, MS, RD, a researcher at the Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research in Portland, Ore.

“This study shows that if people use quality weight management websites consistently, and if they stick with their program, they are more likely to keep their weight off,” said study co-author Victor J. Stevens, PhD, senior investigator at the Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research. “Keeping weight off is even more difficult than losing it in the first place, so the fact that so many people (in the study) were able to maintain a good portion of their weight loss is very encouraging.”

This weight maintenance intervention was part of the Weight Loss Maintenance Trial, one of the largest and longest-running weight maintenance trials ever conducted – lasting three years and including more than 1,600 people at four study sites across the United States. To enroll in the trial, participants had to be overweight or obese based on their Body Mass Index and taking medication for high blood pressure or high cholesterol. For the first six months, participants attempted to lose weight by attending weekly group meetings at which they were weighed, encouraged to keep food diaries, and given extensive information about exercise and healthy eating.

Participants had to lose at least nine pounds to remain in the trial for the weight loss maintenance phase, which lasted an additional two-and-a-half years and included three groups of randomized participants: those with no intervention, those who had monthly contact with a personal health coach, and those given unlimited access to a weight-maintenance website created specifically for the trial.

The Internet group included 348 participants who were encouraged to log in at least once a week. If they didn’t, they received e-mail reminders and follow-up automated phone messages. Once on the website, participants were prompted to record their weight, their minutes of exercise, and the number of days they kept food diaries. If they went longer than seven days without recording their weight other parts of the website were disabled until the weight was recorded. The website included an interactive bulletin board on which participants could talk with others involved in the study and pose questions to nutrition and exercise experts.

During the first six months of the trial, while they were attending group sessions and before they had access to the website, participants who ended up in the Internet group had lost an average of 19 pounds. Once they were given website access, their objective was to keep off as much of that weight as possible. Consistent users who logged in and recorded their weight at least once a month for 24 months maintained the greatest weight loss – keeping off an average of nine of the 19 pounds they’d lost during the initial phase of the trial. Those who logged on less consistently – at least once a month for 14 months – kept off an average of five pounds. Those who logged on even less kept off an average of only three pounds of their original weight loss.

At the end of the study, 65 percent of the participants were still logging on to the website. The study authors were encouraged by this level of participation, noting that it is rare to see that kind of commitment – even in shorter-term weight maintenance studies involving the Internet.

While the study website is no longer available, there are many useful weight management websites that people can access. The study authors advise consumers to look for sites that:

* Encourage accountability by asking users to consistently record weight, exercise and calories consumed
* Offer tailored or personalized information
* Have interactive features that allow users to communicate with each other and with nutrition and exercise experts
* Provide accurate health information.

Talk persists of Bloomberg US presidential run

BOSTON, July 18 (Reuters) – New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, one of the richest men in America, says his views are too polarizing for him to become president of the United States.

But analysts say however much he may protest, conditions may be gelling for Bloomberg, who came close to standing for the White House in 2008, to run in 2012 as an independent.

Voter distaste for both the Democratic and Republican parties and perceptions of government incompetence on big issues, from the Iraq war to the Gulf oil spill, could herald a new chance for the three-term mayor.

“He’s got the right climate and he’s got the money. Resources are always an issue for third-party candidates, but Bloomberg has got that covered,” said Tom Jensen, director of Public Policy Polling in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Bloomberg, 68, is a fiscal conservative with liberal social views who is formally an independent. He combines proven political skills with business acumen and has drawn high ratings for his job running New York City.

It is two-and-a-half years before the next presidential election in November 2012. Democrat Barack Obama is expected to seek a second term but is now struggling with low polling numbers and the Republican field is wide open.

TEASING ANSWERS

At a speech in New Hampshire on Friday, Bloomberg, as he always does, dismissed suggestions that he intends to run but failed to kill the speculation.

“Only my girlfriend and my mother would support me. And I’m not sure about my mother,” he quipped. “If the press is in the back — no, I’m not running. I want to make that clear.”

Still, the comments, and the speech’s setting, did little to silence the buzz.

Bloomberg was kicking off a “presidential lecture series” (actually named for the president of Dartmouth College, who was present) in the state which traditionally holds the first primary vote in the presidential election.

White House hopefuls often visit New Hampshire to test the waters for their campaign long before the election.

Asked about a presidential bid, Bloomberg said his liberal views on issues like abortion and gay rights were out of the current American mainstream.

“I’m pro-choice. I’m pro-gay rights. I’m pro-immigration, I’m pro-gun control. I believe in Darwin,” he said. These views are anathema to many in a Republican Party that is increasingly conservative and laced with fundamental Christian beliefs.

Bloomberg has said he is committed to serving as mayor until his term ends in 2013 and would then leave politics and become a full-time philanthropist.

But it did not go unnoticed that Bloomberg has employed as a political strategist Howard Wolfson, who served as a senior aide on Hillary Clinton’s 2008 presidential bid.

BLOOMBERG’S WEALTH

Bloomberg is the founder of Bloomberg LP, the financial news and media company. Forbes magazine estimates his net worth at $18 billion, the eighth-highest in the United States.

“Bloomberg has a really strong competency argument. The approval rates for both parties are in the 20 to 30 percent range now, extremely low. The climate right now is perfect for someone like Bloomberg to run,” Jensen said.

A lifelong Democrat who turned Republican to run for New York mayor in 2001, Bloomberg left the Republican Party to become an independent in 2007, a move some interpreted then as preparation for a presidential run.

“A successful mayor of New York with lots of resources and lots of ambition should never be counted out,” said Charles Franklin, political science professor at the University of Wisconsin in Madison and co-founder of pollster.com.

Jensen compared a potential Bloomberg 2012 run to the U.S. Senate campaign of Florida Governor Charlie Crist, a Republican who decided to run as an independent after polls showed him trailing another, more conservative Republican.

The last significant third-party presidential bid was by Texas businessman Ross Perot, who received 18.9 percent of the popular vote — about 19.7 million votes — in the 1992 election won by Bill Clinton. He won 8 percent in 1996.

Unlike Perot, Bloomberg brings with him a track record of winning elections. A Quinnipiac University poll published June 30 showed him with a 57 percent to 33 percent approval rating as New York’s mayor. (Editing by Daniel Trotta and David Storey)

Indian shares flip-flop; banks down, Infosys up

MUMBAI, July 15 (Reuters) – Indian shares were choppy on
Thursday as investors adjusted their positions after a sharp
rally, and subdued Asian markets cast a long shadow.

The Federal Reserve’s suggestion that additional measures
may be needed if an already softening U.S. economic outlook
took a turn for the worse and slower growth in China also put
the brakes on stocks buying.

China’s annual economic growth slowed to 10.3 percent in
the second quarter from 11.9 percent in the first quarter, a
touch weaker than expected, in response to credit curbs and the
fading of fiscal stimulus. [ID:nTOE66D06L]

“The market is just consolidating,” said R.K. Gupta,
managing director of Taurus Mutual Fund. “The sentiment is
cautious, but not worrying.”

The benchmark, which had climbed to its highest in nearly
two-and-a-half years on Wednesday, is up 2.8 percent so far
this year outperforming the broader MSCI’s measure of Asian
shares other than Japan .MIAPJ0000PUS which has dipped nearly
4 percent in the year to date.

Foreign funds who have been chasing domestic plays have
poured $8.2 billion into Indian equities this year, data from
the exchange regulator showed.

China raises domestic natural gas price 24.9 pct – NDRC

May 31 (Reuters) – China will raise onshore domestic gas prices by 24.9 percent to 1,155 yuan ($169.1) per tonne per 1,000 cubic metres, China’s top planning body, the National Development and Reform Commission, said on Monday.

The first increase in two-and-a-half years will take effect from Tuesday. China is expected to import more than 15 billion cubic metres of gas this year, almost double the 7.8 bcm it imported in 2009, the NDRC said. (Reporting by Tom Miles; Editing by Jacqueline Wong)

China to raise onshore domestic gas prices -Xinhua

May 31 (Reuters) – China will raise onshore domestic gas prices by 0.23 yuan per cubic metre, Xinhua said on Monday, in what would be the first price increase in two-and-a-half years.

China last raised both wellhead gas prices and wholesale prices to industrial users by 0.40 yuan per cubic metre in November 2007, but spared more sensitive consumers such as residents and fertiliser makers. (Reporting by Niu Shuping and Chen Aizhu; Editing by Jacqueline Wong)

Madonna puts music career on hold to concentrate on new film

London, May 5 (ANI): Madonna has kept her music career on the sidelines to concentrate on planning her upcoming movie W.E., insisting that she doesn”t have the “time or energy” to sing.

The Pop Queen is preparing to direct the drama she”s co-written and has admitted that her latest project has completely “consumed” her working life.

“I”ve been writing it for the last two and a half years, to tell you the truth. It”s been kind of an obsession of mine. I started writing it when I finished filming (2008 directorial debut) Filth and Wisdom. It was actually an idea I had before that, but I made Filth and Wisdom because I realised that I didn”t really have a right to make a bigger film until I made a smaller film – and learned how to make a film,” the Daily Star quoted her as telling Interview magazine.

And the Material Girl has insisted that she is so busy with the film, she has no time to make any new music.

“I don”t have a record deal right now with anybody. I don”t know how I”m going to get my music out the next time I make a record. I”m going to have to reinvent the wheel. I haven”t really been focused as much as I should be on the music part of my career, because this movie has just consumed every inch of me.

“Between that and my four children, I don”t have the time or the energy for anything else. For example, I do appreciate that lots of people worked long and hard putting together things like the DVD of the Sticky & Sweet Tour that we just released, and I have seen the finished product, but I have got no idea how people are going to find out about it or how it”s going to be sold,” she added. Dropping out of college is not a good idea: Bill Gates

Microsoft-founder and billionaire Bill Gates, one of the best known college drop-outs in the world, advised students here that dropping out of college “is not a good idea”.

Gates, who is on a five university tour talking to students about the work done by his philanthropic organization Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, said he later completed a few degrees through online courses.

“I don’t think dropping out (of college) is a good idea… I am glad I got two-and-a-half years of college. Now I have completed the equivalent of some number of degrees by online courses,” Gates told an audience of over 1700 students at the University of Chicago yesterday.

Gates had dropped out of Harvard after his second year to work on his start up company Microsoft, which he describes as “a very magic moment”.

He said he was enjoying his days at Harvard but joked that by dropping out he saved his father’s money.

“I would have had fun staying at Harvard. My dad was paying for everything, so I saved him a bunch of money,” he said.

Emphasising that “education is fundamental”, Gates advised students that unless they had a “very unique” idea they are keen to work on and are confident will materialize into something, they should not think of dropping out.

The university tour, which has taken him to Stanford, Harvard and MIT, is the first that Gates has undertaken to speak about his foundation after he left the day-to-day operations at Microsoft.

Such visits is a way to keep his promise to his father that he would return to college, Gates said.

“When I dropped out of college, I did tell my dad that I would go back to college. So I kind of do it one day at a time to work out this promise that I made to him,” he said.

Speaking on “how can we get the brightest minds to work on the world’s most important problems”, Gates said through dedication and an innovative spirit, students can aspire to help lower child death rates, improve access to quality education as well as join the search for environmentally friendly, inexpensive energy sources.

He pointed out that problems of the poorest countries was not on his mind when he was growing up but as he traveled around the world while at Microsoft, he learnt about broader issues and became aware of problems of poor nations.

“When I was young, I was not thinking about the poorest countries. I wish I had been more aware. I could have started sooner to use my voice and think about those things,” he said, adding that while the foundation has made progress “there is still so much to do”.

Man decorates jewellery display window to pop the question

New York, April 19 (ANI): A Manhattan man is said to have used an upper East Side jeweller’s display window to arrange a floral wedding proposal for his girlfriend.

Tom DeBourcy, 26, had arranged for flowers and a “Will you marry me Alexandra?” sign to be displayed at the window of Jeri Cohen Fine Jewelry on Third Ave., and for his girlfriend to see it as they strolled by.

“Oh, my God, it is beautiful,” the New York Daily News quoted Alex Routenberg, also 26, as saying, as DeBourcy slipped a 2-carat diamond ring onto her finger.

The two had both attended the same high school outside of Chicago, but didn’t meet until he used the alumni connection to contact her on Facebook.

“I asked who the hell he was, and two and a half years later …,” she said.

Routenberg, a fan of “The Real Housewives of New York”, said she was tickled by the store’s connection to the reality TV show.

“I always walk by and say to my mom, ‘This is the place where Jill Zarin goes!’,” she said.

“This is the greatest idea you ever had!” she told her fiance.

“Well, maybe [after] Facebooking me,” she added. (ANI)

Drugs case adjourned

In the Supreme Court at Launceston, a 2007 case against two northern Tasmanians charged with drug trafficking has been adjourned again.

30 year Brett Matthew Freeman and Emma Louise Pearce of Mowbray were charged two and a half years ago with trafficking methamphetamines and ecstasy from Victoria in Express Post packages.

It is alleged six Tasmanians were involved in the $500,000 business.

Freeman and Pearce have previously pleaded not guilty and appeared in court this morning, but the case was adjourned again until next month.

Mayor’s resignation in ‘best interests’ of council

The Mayor of the Victoria Daly Shire, Don Wegener, has resigned.

Last month, councillors unanimously voted they had no confidence in Mr Wengener’s leadership, but under local government legislation he did not have to resign.

Mr Wegener says he’s resigning because his wife is ill and he’s disappointed with how his tenure ended.

He’ll continue to be a councillor and an election for a new mayor will be held on April 29th.

Shire C-E-O Sandra Cannon says his resignation is in the best interests of the council.

“It’s the mayor’s choice to resign, so he could have carried on till the very next election,” Ms Cannon said.

“The council could have continued to do votes of no confidence, so in theory it could have continued for another two and a half years.”

Johnson keen for Ashes glory

After the second Ashes Test of 2009, Mitchell Johnson was nervous about holding his place in the side for the next match.

The left-armer’s modest haul of 3 for 200 at Lord’s helped hand Australia a painful 115-run defeat in what turned out to be a losing series in which Johnson claimed 20 wickets at 32.55.

Fast-forward to Johnson’s sensational summer haul of 41 wickets at 25.90 and it gives an indication of his return to form and his enthusiasm for taking on England again in 2010-11.

Johnson has absolutely destroyed the Kiwis on Australia’s tour of New Zealand, taking 12 wickets at 18.33 in the one-dayers and 12 at 23.08 in the Tests, with Australia winning both series.

“I am pretty excited. It has been a great summer for the whole team,” Johnson said in Hamilton on Wednesday after demolishing the Black Caps with match figures of 10 for 132.

“We are trying really to improve ourselves. We go to England to play Pakistan (in July).

“We will be looking to do well there, keep improving and obviously the Ashes we will be looking forward to playing them in Australia and hopefully get them back.

“I have definitely improved. During that Ashes series I had a bad one in Lord’s and probably wasn’t as consistent throughout that whole series.

“I think I have learnt from that. I have proved it since then and I think I have definitely stepped up a little bit.”

Perth-based Johnson is hoping to go to the beach and visit some Margaret River wineries in the next few weeks ahead of the Twenty20 World Cup in the West Indies which starts on April 30.

Skipper Ricky Ponting says Johnson has “shouldered a massive workload” over the past two-and-a-half years.

“He probably bowled as quick in the second innings of this game as he has right through that period of time,” Ponting said.

“This tour in particular has probably been the best and most consistent I’ve seen him bowl.

“What we have to do is make sure we don’t run him into the ground.”

Ponting praised Johnson’s ability to overcome taunts from Kiwi fans after being fined for a head-clash with Scott Styris in the one-day series.

“Mitch is a pretty fiery competitor and the leader of our attack. He wants to stand up and be that aggressive sort of bowler,” Ponting said.

“He might have even got a few fans back with the way he bowled here.

“They learn a lot about themselves when they are confronted with those issues and having 15,000-20,000 crowd on their back. He has come through that really well.”

Man jailed for road rage stabbing

A 22-year-old from Sandhurst, south-east of Melbourne, will spend at least two-and-a-half years in jail for stabbing a man in a road rage attack.

The court heard Lawson Odlum repeatedly blocked the path of Barry McKnight along a Sandhurst road in 2008.

When he was confronted over his aggressive driving, the two men fought and Odlum stabbed Mr McKnight with a knife he had strapped to his ankle.

The court heard the 22-year-old had been taking excessive amounts of drugs at the time.

He was found guilty of intentionally causing serious injury and pleaded guilty to recklessly causing injury.

The judge told the Victorian County Court that Odlum had totally over-reacted to a perceived slight.

She said it was an alarming and cowardly attack that scares other drivers.

In sentencing Odlum to five years jail, with a non-parole period of two-and-half years, the judge stressed the case should send a warning to all people who carry knives.

Milestones galore expected in Hamilton Test

Hamilton (New Zealand), Mar. 26 (ANI): Saturday”s second cricket Test between Australia and New Zealand will be a milestone game for both teams.

Australian batsmen Mike Hussey and Simon Katich, who were junior rivals in Perth at the age of nine, will play their 50th Test matches alongside each other.

Kiwi captain Daniel Vettori will celebrate his 100th Test match.

Katich has scored seven centuries in his past 26 Tests, but the opener isn”t in the mood to be backing himself for a return to England for the 2013 Ashes tour just yet.

“I wouldn”t look that far in front,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Katich, who broke back into the Test team in 2008 after two-and-a-half years back in state cricket for NSW, as saying.

“In the last couple of years I”ve taken it year by year. If you get too far in front of yourself in this game, it can come back to haunt you,” he added.

“That”s one thing time out of the team certainly put things in perspective. It made me realise every chance I get, I just look at the next Test. I know it”s a cliché, but it”s all you can do, once you do get older. You can”t hide the greys. It catches up with everyone,” he said.

Hussey, who recalled having tears in his eyes upon his debut in Brisbane in 2005, is not making any grand statements either on his Test future.

“I”m similar to Kat. I just can”t get over that I”m playing my 50th Test,” said Hussey, also 34.

“So, I want to really enjoy this one and I don”t like to look too far ahead … because the game can jump up and bite you so quickly. I don”t like to look too far back either,” he added.

“I just really want to do well in this 50th Test which I”m still pinching myself that I”ve got the opportunity to play,” Hussey said. (ANI)

Flooding not too flash says business

A business lobby group is demanding answers about drainage problems that led to flash flooding in the centre of Byron Bay.

Byron Street was closed to traffic for more than a hour this morning following torrential rain.

Ed Ahern, from Byron United says the Byron Shire Council has promised to fix the problem but so far done nothing.

He says retailers suffer when the street goes underwater.

“It was up the door of a poor car there, some bloke went to the bank or something and within 20 minutes his car was nearly drowned,” Mr Ahern said.

“I mean it has a huge effect, you’ve got a pristine coastal town like ours that looks like a swimming pool, it’s just outrageous,” he said.

“I had a meeting with the fellow in charge of the pipes a couple of years ago and he said within 18 months it would be fixed, and that was two-and-a-half years ago,” Mr Ahern said.

“We were trying to get them to do something about it and nothing has been done, we haven’t been notified of any works, we just want them to tell us what their plan is and how they’re going to fund it,” he said.

Furyk poised to end drought in Tampa

Jim Furyk inched closer to his first US PGA Tour title in three years when he moved three strokes clear the third round of the Tampa Bay Championship.

The former US Open champion birdied three of the last nine holes for a 4-under-par 67 and an 11-under total of 202 at the Innisbrook Resort.

South Korean KJ Choi fired a matching 67 to share second place with South African Retief Goosen, Swede Carl Pettersson and long-hitting American Bubba Watson, who all carded 70s.

Australians Nick O’Hern and John Senden are in a tie for ninth with rounds of 67 and 66 respectively, while Geoff Ogilvy stayed in contention with a third-round 65 after he flew home thinking he had missed the cut.

“I’m just happy with the round,” American Furyk told reporters after covering the back nine in 3-under 32.

“I felt like I played real solid on the front nine, missed a couple good birdie putts.

“But I got on a little bit of a run on the back nine and it turned out to be a good score.”

The 2003 US Open champion has not triumphed on the US circuit since the 2007 Canadian Open, a barren run of 58 events.

“I’ve had quite a few opportunities to win,” Furyk said. “Sometimes I’ve hit poor shots or I’ve played poorly, shot a bad round and got myself out of it.

“When you’re playing poorly or you don’t play well, it’s easy to lose your confidence and it takes a lot longer to build it up.

“But I’ve also had a lot of events … where I really felt good about my game and walked off the course knowing that I gave it my all, and really played my rear end off, but just got beat.

“I want to go out and win a golf tournament,” added the 13-times PGA Tour winner.

“That’s what we play golf for. That’s what I practise hard for, and I haven’t been able to do that in over two-and-a-half years.”

Ireland’s Padraig Harrington, who held a one-stroke lead overnight, slipped back with a 72 to share sixth place at 7- under with Briton Luke Donald (67) and American Jeff Maggert (70).

ESPN sportscaster Erin Andrew”s stalker jailed

London, March 16 (ANI): Michael Barrett, the man who taped sportscaster Erin Andrews in various stages of undress, has been jailed for two and a half years.

Using a modified peep-hole, Barrett had videotaped the ESPN reporter at a Tennessee hotel.

The divorced insurance executive, 48, accepted the charge of stalking last December after prosecutors accused him of altering hotel peepholes to make nude videos of Andrews, 31, reports SKY News.

According to court papers, prosecutors said Barrett uploaded as many as 10 videos of Andrews on the Internet.

They also said Barrett had posted videos of another 16 as-yet-unidentified victim onto the web.

In a statement issued through his attorney, Barrett, who was given a 27-month sentence, expressed ”deep regret” to Andrews ”for his conduct that caused her so much pain”. (ANI)
