Aspirin ‘cuts colorectal cancer death risk’

Washington, Aug 12 (ANI): Taking aspirin on a regular basis after being diagnosed with colon cancer has been found to reduce the chances of dying from the disease, reveals a new study.

Numerous prospective, observational studies have shown that regular aspirin use is linked to a lower risk of colorectal adenoma (a benign tumour) or cancer.

However, the influence of aspirin on survival after diagnosis of colorectal cancer has been unknown.

Dr. Andrew Chan of Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston and colleagues studied aspirin use in 1,279 men and women with colorectal cancer that had not spread to other parts of the body.

They found that people who took aspirin regularly after their diagnosis were nearly 29 percent less likely to die from their cancer than people who did not take aspirin. These people also were 21 percent less likely to die for any reason while they were in the study lasting more than two decades.

“These results suggest that aspirin may influence the biology of established colorectal tumours in addition to preventing their occurrence,” Chan said.

Aspirin is likely, at least in part, to prevent colorectal neoplasia (tumour growth) through inhibition of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2; an enzyme), which promotes inflammation and cell proliferation, and is overexpressed in the majority of human colorectal cancers, according to background information in the article.

Cutting down on carbohydrates slows prostate tumour growth

Washington, May 27 (IANS) Cutting down on carbohydrates may slow prostate tumour growth, according to a study conducted on animals.

“Researchers believe that insulin and insulin-like growth factor contribute to the proliferation of prostate cancer,” said Stephen Freedland, urologist at the Duke Prostate Centre and lead investigator on this study.

“Previous work here and elsewhere has shown that a diet light in carbohydrates could slow tumour growth. But the animals in those studies also lost weight and because we know that weight loss can restrict the amount of energy feeding tumours. We weren’t able to tell just how big an impact the pure carbohydrate restriction was having until now,” Freedland added.

Animals in the study were fed one of three diets: a very high fat/no carbohydrate diet, a low-fat/high carbohydrate diet and a high fat/moderate-carbohydrate diet, which is most similar to the diet most Americans eat, Freedland said.

They were then injected with prostate tumours at the same time.

“The mice that were fed a no-carbohydrate diet experienced a 40-50 percent prolonged survival over the other mice,” Freedland said.

Mice on the no-carbohydrate diet consumed more calories in order to keep body weights consistent with mice on the other study arms. “We found that carbohydrate restriction without energy restriction – or weight loss – does indeed result in tumour growth delay,” he said.

Patients are likely to be recruited by Duke and California (Los Angeles) Universities, for further clinical trials within a few weeks, said a Duke release.

These findings appeared in the online edition of Cancer Prevention Research.

Gene that suppresses skin cancer growth identified

London, March 30 (ANI): Scientists at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the U.S. have announced the discovery of a gene that suppresses tumour growth in melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.

The finding was made as part of a systematic genetic analysis of a group of enzymes implicated in skin cancer, and many other types of cancer.

According to the analysis, one-quarter of human skin cancer tumours had mutations in genes that code for matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) enzymes.

The researchers believe that their findings may pave the way for more individualized cancer treatment strategies, where MMP and other key enzymes play a functional role in tumour growth and spread of the disease.

They even say that their study may help understand why drugs designed to treat cancer by blocking MMP enzymes have not been very successful as yet.

During the current study, the team led by researchers from the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) have found that MMP-8 actually serves as a tumour suppressor gene in melanoma, which is why may not be wise to block all MMPs in skin cancer patients with mutation in this gene.

The researchers say that a better approach may be to look for drugs that restore or increase MMP-8 function, or for drugs that block only those MMPs that are truly oncogenes-genes that encode proteins involved in normal cell growth.

“This research is an illustrative proof of concept that shows the value of genomic strategies for understanding cancer and possible therapies,” Nature magazine quoted Dr. Eric Green, NHGRI Scientific Director, as saying.

“It is gratifying to see that genomic technologies are guiding scientific discovery, advancing cancer research, especially melanoma research,” Green added.

While experimenting on mice, the researcher observed that when they injected the animals with cells expressing normal MMP-8, they would not develop skin ulcers.

However, when the mice were injected with cells expressing mutated MMP-8, they went on to develop ulcerations and metastases in their lungs.
