People see Brit boxer Amir Khan as a cash cow, claims his dad

London, May 18 (ANI): WBA light-welterweight champion Amir Khan has asked opponents to stop trying to gain monetary advantage from him by demanding inflated purses to get into the ring with him and then blaming him when the fights fall through.

Khan said Paulie Malignaggi threatened to pull out of Saturday’s clash in New York unless he got more cash.

He got 430,000 pounds from the US TV rights compared to Khan’s 650,000 pounds, The Mirror reports.

Khan’s dad Shah claims the British boxer feels his opponents should be more realistic in their negotiations: “Maybe some people see Amir as a bit of a cash cow because they all seem to want more when it comes to negotiating fees for a fight.”

“They know he is big box office and they want to cash in on him. As soon as his name is mentioned, they demand extra. John Murray twice talked himself out of a fight with Amir because of the demands he made.

“Jon Thaxton was the same and you have to look at where he is now. He could have retired a little bit richer than he did. Boxers should want to fight Amir regardless of all that. I’m not saying fight for nothing, but you have to be realistic,” Shah said.

“If you get tough and refuse to meet their demands, you see stories that Amir did not want the fight when nothing could be further from the truth,” he added. (ANI)

Telling fibs a sign of future success in children

London, May 16 (ANI): There is no need to worry if a child is lying, claim experts, as it proves the kid has reached an important step in his or her mental development.

What”s more, it”s a sign of future success.

After studying 1,200 children, researchers from the Institute of Child Study at Toronto University, who carried out the study, reached the conclusion that kids can be confirmed to have developed “executive functioning”, when they are able to keep the truth at the back of their mind so their fib sounds more convincing.

The researchers insisted that at the age of two, 20 percent of children will lie. This rises to 50 percent by three and almost 90 percent at four. By the time the children reach the age of 12, almost all of them will be deceitful.

However, the tendency starts to fall away by the age of 16, when it is 70percent. With adolescence, young people learn to use the less harmful “white lies” to avoid hurting people”s feelings.

The experts said that a “Pinocchio peak” came at about the age of seven after which it is hard to discern whether a boy or girl is lying without evidence.

“You have to catch this period and use the opportunity as a teachable moment,” The Times quoted Kang Lee, director of the Institute of Child Study at Toronto University, as saying.

He added: “You shouldn”t smack or scream at your child but you should talk about the importance of honesty and the negativity of lying. After the age of eight the opportunities are going to be very rare.”

As part of the study, the research team invited younger children, one at a time, to sit in a room with hidden cameras. A soft toy was placed behind them.

When the researcher briefly left the room, the children were told not to look. In nine out of 10 cases cameras caught them peeking. But when asked if they had looked, they almost always said no. They tripped themselves up when asked what they thought the toy might be. One little girl asked to place her hand underneath a blanket that was over the toy before she answered the question. After feeling the toy but not seeing it, she said: “It feels purple so it must be Barney.”

Lee, who caught his son Nathan, 3, looking at the toy, said: “We even had cameras trained on their knees because we thought their legs would fidget if they were telling a lie, but it isn”t true.”

Older children were set a test paper but were told they must not look at the answers printed on the back.

Some of the questions were easy, such as who lives in the White House. But the children who looked at the back gave the printed answer “Presidius Akeman” to the bogus question “Who discovered Tunisia?” When asked how they knew this, some said they learnt it in a history class.

Joan Freeman, professor of lifelong learning at Middlesex University in London and the author of How to Raise a Bright Child, said: “Clever children are going to be better at lying. Most youngsters grow out of lying if it is not an acceptable part of their culture. But if you are running a business when you grow up you might want to get away with something – and not telling the whole truth is on the edge of morality.” (ANI)

Mel Gibson, Grigorieva were together for ‘3 years’

London, May 11 (ANI): Mel Gibson”s former lover Oksana Grigorieva has declared that their relationship lasted much longer than previously thought – they were actually together for “three years”.

The Lethal Weapon actor announced that he was with the Russian musician last year, shortly after Robyn, his wife of 30 years, filed for divorce.

The couple had a daughter Lucia, in October, but split up in April, and Grigorieva now insists they were actually together since 2006 – after Gibson and his wife legally separated.

“The truth always comes out. We”ve been together for three years – not one year as people have been writing. We were very much in love. He was the biggest love of my life and that”s what Mel always told me,” The Daily Star quoted her as telling Hello! Magazine.

Grigorieva, however, refused to talk about the reasons for the split.

“The reasons I cannot talk about but it will come out at some point.” (ANI)

Madonna puts music career on hold to concentrate on new film

London, May 5 (ANI): Madonna has kept her music career on the sidelines to concentrate on planning her upcoming movie W.E., insisting that she doesn”t have the “time or energy” to sing.

The Pop Queen is preparing to direct the drama she”s co-written and has admitted that her latest project has completely “consumed” her working life.

“I”ve been writing it for the last two and a half years, to tell you the truth. It”s been kind of an obsession of mine. I started writing it when I finished filming (2008 directorial debut) Filth and Wisdom. It was actually an idea I had before that, but I made Filth and Wisdom because I realised that I didn”t really have a right to make a bigger film until I made a smaller film – and learned how to make a film,” the Daily Star quoted her as telling Interview magazine.

And the Material Girl has insisted that she is so busy with the film, she has no time to make any new music.

“I don”t have a record deal right now with anybody. I don”t know how I”m going to get my music out the next time I make a record. I”m going to have to reinvent the wheel. I haven”t really been focused as much as I should be on the music part of my career, because this movie has just consumed every inch of me.

“Between that and my four children, I don”t have the time or the energy for anything else. For example, I do appreciate that lots of people worked long and hard putting together things like the DVD of the Sticky & Sweet Tour that we just released, and I have seen the finished product, but I have got no idea how people are going to find out about it or how it”s going to be sold,” she added. No evidence to prove Younis Khan’s Oz ‘misconduct’ charges: Counsel

Dubai, May 5 (ANI): Former Pakistan cricket captain Younis Khan’s lawyer has said there was no evidence against his client which could prove that his behaviour was not upto the mark during the Australian tour following which he was banned for an indefinite period by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

Mohammed Ahmed Qayyum said he has gone through the PCB’s inquiry committee’s report, which had recommended a ban on both Khan and Mohammed Yousuf, and could find nothing against his client.

“I have seen the documents personally at the PCB headquarters and I found no evidence at all against my client,” Qayyum said.

“Younis Khan was not a part of the team on the New Zealand tour and was only a member of the one-day side on the Australia tour,” he added.

Qayyum said he would urge the PCB for an open enquiry in Khan’s case, and let the people of the country to see the truth.

“Yes, we shall certainly press for the open hearings and let the world know about his innocence,” The Nation quoted Qayyum, as saying.

The second round of hearing, which is being presided over by a former high court judge, Irfan Qadir, is scheduled to take place on Saturday (May 8). (ANI)

‘I’ll always be Sania Mirza’

Newly wed tennis star Sania Mirza has said she will retain her maiden name and play for another three to four years.

In an interview to ‘People’ magazine along with husband and former Pakistan cricket captain Shoaib Malik, Sania said, “no matter what happens I am always going to be Sania Mirza. Maybe later I’ll add his name (sic).”

She said they have chosen Palm Jumeirah in Dubai as their new residence.

“My husband wants to live in Palm Jumeirah and I am not fussy, so that’s where we live,” says Sania.

The couple said their courtship developed over telephone after the first few meetings.

“Suddenly we were constantly texting and then we started talking on the phone for hours. So that’s where things started for us,” says Sania.

Sania said her mother would keep saying that she was wasting so much money on phone calls. “I would tell her that it’s not a waste,” the 23-year-old tennis star said.

On the controversy surrounding their marriage, the two of them said it brought them closer together.

“Hats off to my parents who supported Shoaib like they have stood by me even before he became a part of the family. That got us all much closer,” said Sania.

Shoaib says he also had full faith in Sania’s love. “Sania always knew the truth so I was very confident. We were together and surrounded by people who loved and supported us.”

When asked about their busy schedules, Shoaib said, “We are going to be together for a lifetime so it won’t be very difficult to stay away from each other for a few weeks or months.”

“Anyway, it’s temporary. I’ll probably play for another three to four years,” Sania added.

Sania said Shoaib was more romantic than her. “He is more romantic. When I was getting the mehndi done, he sat with me for four hours because he wanted to.”

On their marriage, she said, “Five years from now when we go on a drive, I want us to be excited at the thought of being together and holding hands.”

Shoaib said Sania was very adjusting, extremely sweet and very punctual. More importantly, she doesn’t get angry, he said.

Sania felt Shoaib was an easy person to live with. “We have spent the last seven days together and we haven’t felt like we are in each other’s face. It’s been very easy to live with him,” she said of her week-old marriage.

The pair is expecting a warm welcome in Pakistan. Shoaib says, “I’ve heard that people of Pakistan are very excited and people are saying that there will be dhols to welcome Sania.”

Both of them are now looking ahead to their honeymoon – she likes the Maldives, he prefers Europe – after which they will settle down in Dubai.

New York, April 21 (ANI): US President Barack Obama’s press secretary, Robert Gibbs, has revealed that the work pressure during the leader’s election campaign took its toll on his health.

But the 39-year-old has also admitted that he is now relaxed into his job and is finding enough time during the workday to go kayaking and bike riding, and then tweeting about it to his 55,600 followers.

“The truth is, having travelled with [Obama] on the campaign, you””re working so much and by the end of the day, you””re just so exhausted, I let my health go. I gained weight,” the New York Post quoted Gibbs, 39, as telling Daily Beast.

On Thursday, he tweeted: “Just spent 45 mins kayaking Potomac — beautiful on the water — 1st day open for Jack””s Boathouse (Water St under Key Bridge — check it out).”

On Saturday, he said: “Just finished 15 miles on the new bike — more hills and lots of wind today but still a pretty day.”(ANI)

John Lennon fans uncover his hidden LSD stash area

London, April 19 (ANI): John Lennon fans believe they have uncovered an area in the late Beatle”s Surrey home where he hid his stash of LSD almost four decades ago.

Builders digging up the lawn of Lennon”s old house, Kenwood, have discovered the remains of a leather holdall containing numerous large broken glass bottles, reports the Sun.

It is believed Lennon buried a large cache of drugs in his garden in 1967 when the Fab Four decided to give up drugs in favour of transcendental meditation.

However, when the band returned from India, Lennon thought he had made a hasty decision. He tried to dig up the drugs but never found them.

But now Lennon devotees are convinced that these bottles contained the drugs, even though the truth cannot be found as the only bottle found intact had a cracked cork, thus it was empty. (ANI)

Dame Elizabeth Taylor refuses to undergo vital surgery

London, Mar 29 (ANI): Dame Elizabeth Taylor has refused to undergo any further surgeries despite the crippling neck pain she has.

Taylor, 78, who now mostly uses a wheelchair, is reportedly feeling too weak to have any more operations.

She has been in hospital more than 100 times in the last 25 years to attend to back problems and have her hips replaced.

According to the Sunday Express, despite suffering from scoliosis – a curvature of the spine – and coping with a sore neck, Taylor is refusing any more operations.

“I won’t go as far as to say she has given up but she is adamant she can’t face another operation,” the Daily Star quoted a source as telling the publication.

“Some mornings her neck is in such acute pain she is barely able to lift her head.

“She spends most of the day sitting in a chair with her head slumped on her shoulder. It’s the only position in which she feels anything like comfortable.

“It must be hellish for her but she says she is more sick of seeing the inside of an operating theatre than anything else.

“She told me: ‘This is no way to live, forever in hospital’, but the truth is she urgently needs an operation to relieve the pressure and pain her crooked spine is causing,” the source added. (ANI)

Tiger Woods reveals how wife reacted over infidelity

London, March 22 (ANI): Tiger Woods has revealed in a television interview how his wife Elin Nordegren reacted when she discovered he had cheated on her.

“She was hurt, she was hurt, very hurt. Shocked. Angry,” the Mirror quoted Woods as saying in an interview with sports station ESPN.

“And you know, she had every right to be and I’m disappointed as everyone else in my own behaviour because I can’t believe I did that to the people I loved,” he added.

The disgraced golfer also revealed what led him to cheat on the mother of this two children, Sam, two and Charlie, one.

“Well I had gotten away from my core values. I’d gotten away from my Buddhism. And I quit meditating,” he said.

“Stripping away denial and rationalism you start coming to the truth of who you really are and that can be very ugly. But then again, when you face it and you start conquering and you start living up to it. The strength that I feel now, I’ve never felt that type of strength,” he added. (ANI)

Wood”s wife ‘disappears’ as ex mistress vows to unveil more sex texts

Melbourne, March 20 (ANI): Tiger Woods” wife Elin Nordegren has reportedly disappeared as one of his alleged mistresses vowed to unveil more racy text messages she claims to have received from the golf star.

Former porn actress Joslyn James revealed she is ready to unwrap more dirt on the shamed golfer, with whom she allegedly had a three-year affair.

According to the Mirror newspaper, James has set up a website where Woods” alleged sex texts can be read and she would soon post some of the more than 1,000 text messages.

“I just wanted the public to know and the truth to be out there for me to have people see what I was being told and not just judge me for being with a married guy,” the Daily Telegraph quoted James as saying.

The 32-year-old apparently added: “If I would have known everything that was going on, and wasn”t being lied to, I would have done things differently.”

She also told the New York Daily News: “There were certain things about our relationship that were not conventional. There were a couple situations when he was a bit more aggressive than usual.”

Meanwhile, Elin, the mother of Wood’s two kids, has not been seen at their residence for several days, according to TMZ.com. (ANI)

Senate rejects motion on political advertising

The Greens have failed in their bid for the Senate to push for a new political advertising regulator.

The Greens leader Bob Brown tried to move a motion calling on the Government to set up a “Truth in Political Advertising Unit” before the next federal election.

Senator Brown criticised the Government and Opposition for not supporting the bid to amend the Commonwealth Electoral Act.

“When you vote down motions [on this topic] you are manifestly supporting lying, fraudulent behaviour and corruption of the political process. You cannot have it both ways,” he said.

“These are strong words but they need to be issued and the challenge needs to be issued in this Parliament.

“It is disgraceful behaviour by the big parties.”

Tensions rise over Gulf housing plan

An Indigenous lobbyist says tensions are at breaking point in the Gulf of Carpentaria community of Doomadgee over 40-year leases.

The Federal Government has allocated funding for housing upgrades in remote communities but it is subject to the State Government administering the leases.

Indigenous lobbyist Murrandoo Yanner says residents have not been consulted and legal avenues are being investigated to fight the plan.

He says people will be forced to buy a home rather than live communally.

But Mount Isa MP Betty Kiernan says there have been lengthy consultations in Doomadgee over the matter.

“The truth is some community leaders and their families are working in the best interest of their community while others make threats of violence,” she said.

“Violence has no place in any society and the truth is for the first time in their lives people who wish to buy their own homes can and that can only be a good thing.”

Kidnapped Brit toddler recovered in Pak

Islamabad, Mar.16 (ANI): Pakistani police officials have claimed that the five-year old British child, Sahil Saeed, who was kidnapped from his grandmother’s house in Punjab’s Jhelum district two weeks ago, has been safely recovered.

Sahil’s grandfather, Raja Basharat, also confirmed his recovery, saying that he has been handed over to the Jhelum town administration.

“He is recovered and safe,” said Basharat.

Basharat also denied any ransom being paid by the family members for Sahil’s release, The News reports.

Meanwhile, the British High Commission has also confirmed Sahil’s recovery, who was abandoned by his kidnappers near a school in Danga village.

Sahil was abducted from his grandmother’s house in Jhelum on March 3, as he was about to leave along with his father to catch a flight back to London.

The kidnappers had demanded 100,000 pounds as ransom.

It is believed that some family members were involved in kidnapping, but the truth is yet to be revealed. (ANI)

Stop blaming Pakistan for ‘home grown’ terror plots, Qureshi tells UK

London, Sep.19 (ANI): Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi has asked Britain to stop blaming Islamabad for the ‘home grown’ terror plots against the UK.

Referring to Britain’s lashing out at Pakistan on the liquid bomb plot issue, Qureshi said it was unfair to criticize Pakistan for every terror plot hatched in Britain.

“It is easy to pass the buck, but they (liquid bomb plotters) were British citizens. They went to school here, they are part of the British system, and they live here. If they do something extraordinary is it fair that Pakistan should be blamed?” The Independent quoted Qureshi, as saying.

Pakistan has been critical of Britain’s accusations and has objected to allegations regarding it not doing enough to counter the expanding reach of the extremists based in the country’s tribal region.

A top Pakistani diplomat recently reacted strongly to Britain’s accusations regarding Pakistan harbouring extremists plotting to attack the UK.

The diplomat charged Britain of not doing enough to tackle home grown terrorists and treating Pakistan as a “whipping boy”.

“Sometimes for our British friends the truth is bitter. We have somehow turned out to be a ‘whipping boy’, there is a long history to that. The British need to search their own house,” the diplomat had said.

It may be recalled that Prime Minister Gordon Brown, during his Islamabad visit earlier this year, had said: “Three-quarters of the most serious plots investigated by the British authorities have links to Al-Qaida in Pakistan.”

Brown’s statement had angered Pakistani leadership and strained relationship between two countries, but things normalized later with President Asif Ali Zardari visit to the UK. (ANI)

Aniston’s new flick in ‘script theft’ suit

Washington, September 16 (ANI): The producers of Jennifer Aniston’s new film have been sued by two screenwriters, who alleged that the movie’s plot has been stolen.

Filing their papers against NBC Universal executives, Greg Crowder and Tony Freitas claimed that Scott Bernstein had rejected their script titled ‘The Truth’ when he was Vice President of Production for Universal Pictures in 2006.

Their contention is that the script has now been revamped as ‘Love Happens’, starring Aniston and Aaron Eckhart.

The film is set to hit cinemas on September 18, reports Contactmusic.

According to documents obtained by TMZ.com, Crowder and Freitas want it pulled from release or 100,000 dollars in damages.

Crowder claims that Bernstein told him the script for The Truth needed a rewrite before Universal would buy it, and since the producers refused to pay for the rewriting work, the deal did not materialise.

The writer says that he was shocked to learn that the script for Aniston’s new flick, which revolves around a self-help guru with a dark past, was very similar to that he had written with Freitas. (ANI)
