Indigenous group wants new Taylor Oval trustee

The Murri Task Force is calling for a new trustee to be appointed for Moree’s Taylor Oval, after Moree council approved commercial development on the site of Indigenous burials and historical sporting moments.

The call comes six months after the Supreme Court blocked a proposal to build a department store on Taylor Oval due to the site’s cultural significance.

The council is refusing to explain why it approved the development.

Task force spokesman Lyall Munro says he wants the council to engage more with local Aboriginal people.

“Moree Plains Shire Council, as far as we’re concerned, they failed as trustees of Taylors Oval,” he said.

“We would like to see another structure set up as trustees of the people in the future for Taylors Oval, to make sure it continues as a reconciliation and sports field for the generation of Moree because its history is real and Taylors Oval is real.”

Sale halted at Mont. club after LeMond objects

BILLINGS, Mont. — A U.S. bankruptcy judge is stopping the new owners of the Yellowstone Club from buying a key piece of property within the exclusive, millionaires-only ski resort.

Cycling star Greg LeMond had objected to the deal. He is one of the club’s original members, and his family holds a $13.5 million lien on the Montana property. His attorneys say the sale is being rushed through without giving others a chance to make an offer.

CrossHarbor Capital Partners of Boston bought the resort last year for $115 million. The sale didn’t include a 160-acre compound owned by the club’s bankrupt former owner, Edra Blixseth.

That property was once valued at $56 million. But in October, CrossHarbor reached a tentative deal to buy it for $8.5 million.

In a ruling Monday, Judge Ralph Kirscher said Blixseth’s trustee must seek better offers.

Gandhians in Ahmedabad laud government’s austerity drive

Ahmedabad, Sep 18(ANI): In contrast to leaders of some political parties, who are criticising the austerity measures mooted by the government as mere ‘tokenism’, Gandhians associated with the Sabarmati Ashram at Ahmedabad have lauded the initiative.

The Gandhains, who themselves live a life of extreme simplicity, following the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, said that if politicians lead a simple life, people would certainly follow in tune with the adage: Follow the leader.

Amrut Modi, the managing trustee Sabarmati Gandhi Ashram, a staunch Gandhian himself, is a firm believer in Gandhi’s teaching of ‘doing one’s work by oneself’, and professes it religiously.

Appreciating the austerity drive of the government, he said that politicians through such measures inspire people towards leading a simple life, as the Mahatma did.

“If simplicity is acquired, it can lead to change. Gandhiji himself had brought about change in the country. He prepared the people for independence and self-rule. The principle of simplicity is included in his teachings. He inspired the common man, through his simple life. Even today if our politicians adopt simplicity, then people will take inspiration from them,” Modi said.

Several other believers of Gandhi’s teaching also said that simplicity could help the nation develop, and also set an example in front of the whole world.

“The ministers should adopt Gandhiji’s principles and teachings pertaining to simplicity. This will help in the development of the country financially and otherwise and they can also send the message to the world, that how beneficial it can be to walk on Gandhiji’s principles,” said Dhimant Badiya, another Gandhian. Ambika Soni reaffirms commitment to Public Service Broadcasting Trust

New Delhi, Sept 15 (ANI): The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has renewed its commitment of financial support to the Public Service Broadcasting Trust (PSBT), a Delhi-based NGO.

Under the plan scheme component for production of documentaries through NGOs, the Films Division would grant funds to the PSBT, which has been short-listed for production of documentaries for the current financial year.

In the past also, the Doordarshan and the PSBT have had a successful public-private partnership.

Over the past nine years, a large number of documentary films have been funded by the Doordarshan.

Among the National Non-Feature Film Awards-2007, at least four of such joint productions of the Prasar Bharati and the PSBT have won accolades.

Speaking on the occasion of ‘Commemorating 50 years of Public Television In India’, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ambika Soni invited suggestions from the luminaries of PSBT Trustees for making the Public Service Broadcaster-Doordarshan more vibrant and interesting while retaining its commitment for healthy entertainment suitable for family viewing.

Soni also reiterated that her Ministry would continue to strive to encourage creative skills so long as they honour the sensibilities of all single television viewing families.

The Minister exhorted the young filmmakers – particularly those who are the beneficiaries of the PSBT-Ministry fellowships, to take up the challenge of making relevant programmes for particularly the marginalized strata of society.

“The Doordarshan is the only channel with the widest terrestrial reach which caters to the remotest and border areas often neglected by the commercial interests of other channels,” she added.

She also invited stalwarts like Shyam Benegal (a PSBT Trustee), who had made the memorable ‘Bharat ek khoj’ serial for Doordarshan in the past, to contribute meaningfully to Doordarshan again.

Adoor Gopalkrishnan (Chairman PSBT)’s new film “Oru Pennum Randaanum”, funded by Doordarshan was screened on the occasion. (ANI)

Utkal Das, the Inspector in-charge refused to disclose details of the case, and said that he would give his statement at the right time and right place.

Madoff sons may pay for his sins

New York, Sep. 2 (ANI): A court-appointed trustee overseeing the Madoff case is poised to file civil complaints against jailed Ponzi King Bernie Madoff’s two sons Mark and Andrew – who ran their father’s trading division – and Peter Madoff, Bernie’s brother and company’s chief compliance officer.

Trustee Irving Picard will seek in excess of 50 million dollars, including at least 30 million dollars in loans to the sons. He is not accusing them of wrongdoing; instead his goal is to recapture money diverted from Bernie Madoff’s massive Ponzi scheme.

“He’s trying to get money back for the benefit of creditors from people who weren’t entitled to receive it,” CBS quoted bankruptcy attorney John Kinzey, as saying.

Other sources say Picard intends to force the Madoffs to reveal all their assets – everything from bank accounts to fancy homes, including one on Nantucket Island bought by Mark Madoff and his wife for six and a half million dollars in cash.

It was bought with money directly transferred from the bank account of Bernie Madoff Investment Securities.

Mark Madoff has refused to comment on the issue. (ANI)

Malay temple trustees furious at semi-dressed praying woman’s pics

Kuala Lumpur, Aug 19 (ANI): Pictures of a semi-dressed young Caucasian woman supposedly praying at the Kek Lok Si Temple has left temple trustees furious.

The trustees have denied that the pictures, being circulated through an email, were shot inside their temple, and have claimed that it is the work of some mischievous people, who are trying to tarnish their name.

The 12 e-mail pictures show the young woman clad in a blouse and short skirt, exposing her panties and breasts while performing prayers.

Temple trustee Datuk Steven Ooi said that they were aware of the claims, but ruled out that the pictures were shot inside the temple.

“Someone is out to smear the good name of the temple, which is one of the state’s popular tourist attractions,” the Star Online quoted him as saying.

Ooi said that a comparison of the pictures with the temple’s internal and external features, including the Buddha statues, showed that they could not have been taken at the Kek Lok Si Temple.

“It is almost impossible for the woman to pull off such a stunt inside the temple because it is busy with visitors, nuns and monks most of the time,” he added.

Ooi said that the temple would not make a police report because they did not want to be dragged into a controversy. (ANI)

EPFO meeting to decide rate of interest on PF today

New Delhi, July 4 (ANI): The Central Board of Trustees (CBT) of the Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) is meeting today to discuss the rate of interest for provident fund for the current financial year.

Labour Minster Mallikarjun Kharge will chair the meeting.

The EPFO meeting, which is happening two days before the presentation of the general budget, is considered crucial as the decision taken by the EPFO has to be scrutinised by the Finance Ministry.

Nearly 4.5 crore employees in the country benefit from the provident fund. The EPFO is expected to retain the 8.5 percent interest rate for the current fiscal too.

The meeting is also expected to discus the Finance Ministry’s suggestion to invest 15 percent of the EPFO”s corpus, which is about Rs 1.82 lakh crore in companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE) and also equity-linked schemes of SEBI-regulated mutual funds, which was rejected by the EPFO’s Finance and Investment Committee in March.

According to sources, the EPFO has no reserves left to pay higher interest rate than 8.5 percent in this fiscal as it had suffered a Rs 139-crore deficit during 2008-09. The deficit was later made up from the available Contingency Fund of around Rs 150 crore.

The Central Board of Trustee will send its recommendations on the interest rate on provident fund deposits, to the Finance Ministry for final approval and notification. (ANI) (ANI)

REFILE-Judge rules Madoff can be pushed into bankruptcy

NEW YORK, April 10 (Reuters) – Victims of Bernard Madoff may be allowed to push the swindler behind a purported $65 billion Ponzi scheme into bankruptcy, a federal court judge ruled on Friday.

Despite objections from federal prosecutors, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and the Trustee for the Liquidation of Bernard L Madoff Investment Securities LLC, U.S. District Court Judge Louis Stanton ruled that the alleged victims may go after Madoff’s assets that were not proceeds from his crimes.

The judge, of the Southern District of New York in Manhattan, said the U.S. bankruptcy code is the best and most experienced system to deal with the claims against Madoff’s assets, excluding those that prosecutors may force him to forfeit as proceeds from a crime.

“A Bankruptcy Trustee has direct rights to Mr. Madoff’s individual property, with the ability to maximize the size of the estate available to Mr. Madoff’s creditors through his statutory authority to locate assets, avoid fraudulent transfers and preserve or increase the value of the assets through investment or sale,” Stanton wrote in his opinion.

Madoff has pleaded guilty to masterminding Wall Street’s biggest ever investment swindle, involving as much as $65 billion in client funds. He could be ordered to prison for the rest of his life when sentenced in June. (Reporting by Ilaina Jonas; Editing by Jan Paschal)

Judge rules Madoff can be pushed into bankruptcy

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Victims of Bernard Madoff may be allowed to push the swindler behind a purported $65 billion Ponzi scheme into bankruptcy, a federal court judge ruled on Friday.

Madoff has pleaded guilty to masterminding Wall Street’s biggest ever investment swindle, involving as much as $65 billion in client funds. He could be ordered to prison for the rest of his life when sentenced in June.

Separately, firms that sent investors’ money to Madoff took in $790 million in fees and investors and authorities are trying to recover the money, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Banco Santander SA, one of the biggest so-called “feeders” to Madoff, earned $52.7 million in investment manager’s fees in 2007 and $43.3 million in 2006, the newspaper said in a story posted on Friday on its website.

Fairfield Greenwich Group, which was the biggest feeder fund, may have earned $400 million from 2005 to 2008 based on a lawsuit against the company filed by Massachusetts securities regulators, the newspaper said.

India a partner in Obama’s N-efforts?

IF US President Barack Obama is serious about reducing nuclear weapons, putting in place a global nuclear test ban and ending the production of fissile material to produce more nuclear weapons, then India will necessarily be in the frontline of such efforts. Speaking in Prague, Obama said, ” and #8230;I state clearly and with conviction America’s commitment to seek peace and security of a world without nuclear weapons and #8230;” “To put an end to Cold War thinking, we will reduce the role of nuclear weapons in our national security strategy and #8230; we will negotiate a new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty with the Russians this year.

” The US President also said his administration would “immediately and aggressively” pursue the ratification of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), which was rejected by the US Senate in 1999. India, which has still to sign and ratify the CTBT, having acquired de facto nuclear weapon status in 1998, would have little choice but to sign the Treaty if the Senate ratifies it.

“I don’t see why today’s India should object to signing the Treaty if the US and China ratify it,” Arundhati Ghose, former Indian ambassador and arms control expert, told HT. Ghose, however, was skeptical about Obama’s efforts to reduce global nuclear weapons. “I think he’s forgotten that the (presidential) campaign is over.

He is President of the US, which is in dire straits,” she argued. Another key area of interest is a new treaty to end the production of fissile material.

“If we are serious about stopping the spread of these weapons, then we should put an end to the dedicated production of weapons-grade materials that create them,” Obama said. “The basic bargain is sound: Countries with nuclear weapons will move towards disarmament, countries without nuclear weapons will not acquire them, and all countries can access peaceful nuclear energy.

,” he underlined. Radha Kumar, trustee at the Delhi Policy Group, said the world would have to deal with the issue of unequal levels of fissile material in the possession of nuclear weapon states.

On CTBT, Kumar said: “The logic is there for India to sign CTBT. But it remains to be seen what government takes power in Delhi.”.

Plea to junk elevated expressway project

CHENNAI: Beach-goers, fisherfolk, environmentalists and residents of Foreshore Estate, Olcott Kuppam and Orur Kuppam in Besant Nagar on Friday
demanded that the state government abandon its proposed 7.5-km six-lane elevated expressway along the beach from Marina to East Coast Road.

Under a newly formed forum, Save Chennai Beaches, an awareness and protest rally was held on Eliots beach. Members of the forum alleged that the project would disrupt fishing activity, displace coastal residents, disturb nesting turtles and damage ecologically sensitive areas such as the Theosophical Society and Adyar estuary, besides changing the face of residential areas.

Arun from Students Sea Turtle Conservation Network (SSTCN), a voluntary group, said that the construction of the expressway would disrupt the nesting spots of the Olive Ridley turtles, an endangered species listed in Schedule I of the Wildlife Act. SSTCN has been working since 1980 along the coastline, spreading awareness about the species and the need to conserve it. “We have so far saved more than 8,000 turtle hatchlings and released them safely into the sea. The proposed expressway will make it hell here,” he said.

After consultant Willbur Smith Associates Pvt Ltd, appointed by the highways department, conducted a detailed feasibility study last year, the government planned to start work on the corridor construction, from the Lighthouse to Foreshore Estate, crossing Adyar estuary and beyond, up to Ururkuppam. The alignment joins Besant Nagar Fifth Avenue Road near Eliots Beach, before the second phase in Kottivakkam takes over.

According to Madras high court senior advocate Sriram Panchu, both phases violated environmental rules and the coastal regulation zone (CRZ) notification, 1991. He added: “The proposal is a subversion of the masterplan, as it finds no mention in the document. Given the magnitude of the legal issues, I only hope and trust the government should realise the legal implications and withdraw the project.”

Theosophical Society general manager S Harihara Raghavan said the expressway would badly affect the fragile ecology in the Society grounds. “There were more than 160 migratory and native birds in the society, but it has come down to 80 now. The population of birds will be further affected in case the elevated expressway takes shape. The government should also think about the broken bridge near Srinivasapuram, which was washed away 30 years ago due to soil condition.”

M G Devasahayam, managing trustee, SUSTAIN, an NGO, said that various plans proposed by government agencies to reduce traffic congestion – upgradation of roads near Foreshore Estate, linking Greenways Road to Durgabai Deshmukh Road, reclamation of the four-lane carriageway on L B Road by removing encroachments and construction of a grade separator-cum-subway at the Tiruvanmiyur junction – should be implemented soon.

Members of Save Chennai Beaches plan to make a representation to the state government soon

‘Khadi’ becoming less popular in Gujarat

Ahmedabad, March 30 (ANI): Handspun cotton popularly known as ‘Khadi’ is becoming less popular among political parities in Gujarat.

Khadi had emblematic status during India’s freedom struggle. Gujarat is one of the hubs of Khadi outlets in the country.

With the coming of the elections, the shopkeepers believe that that election would make up for their declining trade which has been already affected by the economic slowdown.

The shop owners are claim that as compared to previous years this time the business has gone down by 10 to 15 percent.

“As it happens normally that with the coming of election, the sale of the Khadi rises. But nothing of that sort is happening in my three shops. No politicians come here to buy Khadi, if they come the sale will be good. Last year, we sold for 14 lakhs but this time it has come down to 11 lakhs. In the Gandhi road shop, the sale of the Khadi was eight lakh in the previous year, this year the sale has gone down at five lakhs, ” said Jayantibhai Shah, managing trustee of Khadi Mandir.

One of the customers said that the price and the simplicity of the style also played a role in Khadi losing its popularity.

“The sale is not picking up as Khadi is little costlier. And there is no politician to promote Khadi. More than that, the style that we get in Khadi material is simple, not stylish enough to attract. That is why people avoid Khadi,” said Sudhir Shah, a customer.

In 2007 the Khadi sale was worth Rs. 2.85 crore which has come down to Rs. 2.55crore in 2008. By Uday Adhavayu (ANI)

India needs to make Obama understand that all Taliban are bad: ex-NSA Miishra

New Delhi, Mar.21 (ANI): The Indian Government should try to convince the Brack Obama administration that all Taliban are equally bad and dangerous, former National Security Advisor Brajesh Mishra suggested here today.

“There is nothing like good Taliban or bad Taliban. Taliban is bad. We should try to make President Obama and his team understand this,” Mishra said during a keynote address at the Observer Research Foundation’s seminar on China “Internal Scene: olitical, social and political”.

Mishra, now Trustee of the ORF, said: “India is going to have enough opportunities in the immediate future to convince the Obama Administration.”

He said the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, should raise this point when he meets President Obama in London on April 2 during the G-20 summit.

He said India will have the opportunities at the SCO meeting in Moscow and NATO meeting at The Hague also where India is sending its representatives.

Mishra said, after the Mumbai attack, though the Government said that there won’t be any military action but would launch diplomatic action, but in fact there was no action at all. “There was no diplomatic action”, he remarked.

Saying that India is now low on the US radar, he said the Obama Administration is shifting its policy regarding Taliban and is eager to ensure more Pakistani assistance to fight a section of Taliban.

Though Obama is in need of China now to fight the economic crisis, he said the China-US relations is not going to be a rosy path.

Mishra, who held lengthy negotiations with the Chinese during the Vajpayee regime, said the Chinese are keen to solve the boundary dispute, but they felt the present government lacked the political will to do so.

He said if the NDA came back to power, it would have made significant progress, if not solving the problem itself. He said India had got two good opportunities to solve the boundary problem – once during the prime ministership of Jawarharlal Nehru and another in during the period of Indira Gandhi government in 1980. “There was no political problem then, but we created problems ourselves,” he said.

Saying that the situation now is grave, he said steps should be taken to see that no conflicts arise between China and India.

He suggested that negotiations and dialogues with China, especially in the fields of culture and science and technology, should continue to give the impression of some kind of normalization process. “This we have to keep going,” he said.

The seminar was inaugurated by former Foreign Secretary M.K. Rasgotra. The seminar had sessions on ‘Overall Political Scene’, ‘Centre-Province Relations; Regional Trends and Developments’, ‘Social and Cultural Scene’ and ‘Impact of Globalisation on China and China’s Handling of the Process’.

It was attended by ex-bureaucrats and academics like Salman Haider and K. Raghunath, C.V. Ranganathan, D.S. Rajan, Air.Commodore Jasjit Singh, Dr. Srikanth Kondapalli, Dr. Ravi Prasad Narayanan, Dr. Alka Acharya, Dr. Ravni Thakur and others. (ANI)

Kerry Katona calls off search for her missing millions

London, Mar 19 (ANI): Kerry Katona has called off the search for her missing millions of pounds.

The former Atomic Kitten singer has appointed forensic accountant Frank Cochran after her supposed split from hubby Mark Croft last week.

She kicked Croft out of their house immediately after learning she had lost almost 3 million pounds in two years.

Katona begged Cochran to hunt down millions of pounds of earnings that she fears have gone missing.

However, the 28-year-old has already ditched the probe.

Her decision comes after she allowed Croft back into her Cheshire home.

Croft had allegedly refused to cooperate with Cochran’s crack team of finance experts.

However, a rep for Katona insists that it was entirely her decision.

“On the advice of the Trustee of the Bankruptcy, Kerry Katona has asked Frank Cochran to stand down as her financial adviser,” the Sun quoted the rep, as saying.

“The decision was taken solely by Kerry Katona after she was advised by the Trustee that a third party investigation would only hinder her chances of getting out of bankruptcy,” the source added. (ANI)

Mixed response to auctioning of Gandhi’s belongings in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad, Feb 13, (ANI): The followers of Mahatma Gandhi on Friday gave a mixed response to the move to auction some of his personal belongings in New York next month.

The sandals and metal-rimmed glasses of Mahatma Gandhi will be auctioned on March 4 – 5.

Sabarmati Gandhi Ashram managing trustee Amrutbhai Modi said, “There are his spectacles, pen and watch. Pen and watch he might have gifted to someone or might have reached through some other reasons. If anybody acquire it so why should we worry so much? He has done a lot for India but not to forget he was a world renowned figure.” he auction includes Gandhi’s pocket watch, metal rimmed and circular glasses footwear and some other belongings.

Some of the followers of Gandhi said they felt that the Government should take steps to stop the auctioning of the belongings.

One of the member of Sabarmati Ashram Jignesh Shukla said, “His spectacles are being auctioned next month, which is very wrong. Such things should not be commercialised. Commercialising items belonging to a person like him is not good. He has sacrificed his life for the country. Auctioning off such things is not called for.” ccording to sources, the items now belong to a private American collector who obtained them from the Gandhi family’s heirs. (ANI)
