Tibetans living-in-exile surprised over China’s opposition to Dalai Lama’s visit

Gangtok, Sep 17 (ANI): Members of the exiled Tibetan community living at Gangtok said China’s opposition to the Dalai Lama’s visit to Arunachal Pradesh is “surprising”.

The Dalai Lama plans to visit Arunachal Pradesh soon. China has claimed part of Arunachal as its territory.

The exiled Tibetan spiritual leader’s aide said the Dalai Lama would be in Arunachal Pradesh state in the second week of November.

The intended visit has already sparked off controversy. China claims about 90,000 sq km of Arunachal Pradesh as part of its territory.

The Dalai Lama’s travel plan was announced a week after the completion of his visit to Taiwan, a self-ruled island claimed by Beijing. China denounced the trip.

“This time round when they (Chinese Authorities) are making some kind of pressure or some kind of opposition to the upcoming visit of his holiness to Arunachal Pradesh it is really very surprising.

Why would they complain when the government of India has no problem in his holiness visiting Arunachal Pradesh? So why should people of republic of china have some problem?” said Zimba Bhutia, Tibetan youth committee member.

“Chinese authorities have always been against the trip of Dalai Lama. So I think that they should know why Dalai Lama has been there. Dalai Lama has been welcomed by the people of Arunachal Pradesh as the spiritual and a Buddhist monk,” said Dhondup Dorjee, Tibetan welfare officer of Sikkim.

A visit to Arunachal Pradesh could now draw further attention to China’s treatment of Tibetan activists and the Dalai Lama’s calls for cultural and religious freedoms and autonomy. (ANI)

Jolie takes adopted daughter Zahara on first visit to native Ethiopia

Washington, September 16 (ANI): Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie’s eldest daughter Zahara returned to her native Ethiopia for the first time since her adoption four years ago.

The four-year-old flew back home with her mother at the weekend.

It all happened when Jolie, currently in Kenya on a United Nations mission with partner Brad Pitt and their six children, broke away from the trip to cross the border into Ethiopia.

Zahara’s little sister Shiloh, 3, also accompanied them.

However, Pitt and the couple’s other four children stayed behind.

“On a trip to Kenya with their children, Angelina stopped in Dabaab Refugee Camp, and also flew to Ethiopia with Zahara and Shiloh for two days,” Contactmusic quoted a source as having told People.com.

“(It was) the first time Zahara had been back home since her adoption. The trip was about keeping up that culture for her,” the source added.

If reports are to be believed, Jolie is looking for a property to build a tuberculosis and AIDS clinic in Zahara’s name.

The Hollywood couple jointly founded a similar organisation to aid impoverished children-known as the Maddox Jolie-Pitt Project-after adopting their eight-year-old son Maddox from Cambodia in 2002. (ANI)

Sonia Gandhi sets an example, flies economy class to Mumbai

New Delhi/Mumbai, Sep.14 (ANI): Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Monday flew by economy class to Mumbai to attend a rally of party workers and also to hold discussions with the leadership of the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).

Gandhi’s decision to fly economy class followed a similar act by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and an announcement by External Affairs Minister S. M. Krishna that he would be undertaking official trips to Belarus and Turkmenistan.

He has also decided to cut down his delegation from 20 to two members for the trip.

Krishna further said that he would not travel first class in commercial airliners during his official trips.

The decision to fly economy class comes in the wake of Mukherjee’s appeal for a need for ministers and lawmakers to observe austerity in their lifestyle and official functions as the country is facing a crisis caused by drought. (ANI)

US Fritzl told wife “to take the cute blond girl” during “child shopping” trip

London, Sept 13 (ANI): Phillip Garrido, the “American Fritzl”, selected Jaycee Lee Dugard as his prey during a “child shopping” trip because she looked cute, his wife has told police in California.

Describing the precision that went into the abduction of the then 11-year-old Jaycee, Nancy told cops that they decided not to snatch the pretty blond girl with the gap-toothed grin that day in June 1991 because she was walking through South Lake Tahoe along with few school friends.

Instead, they apparently trailed her to her home before returning the next morning to complete their mission.

Garrido allegedly jumped out of their car and grabbed her as she walked to nearby a bus-stop, while her husband remained behind the wheel.

“That’s the one I want,” Garrido told her when he saw Jaycee in the resort town.

“She’s cute, but she’s with the other kids. Let’s come back later and get her,” she added.

After being briefed on Mrs Garrido’s testimony by law enforcement contacts, Michael Cardoza, a Californian attorney and former prosecutor, relayed his coldly calculating words to the Telegraph.

“This was nothing less than a child shopping trip. It just makes their actions all the more horrendous and reprehensible,” he said. (ANI)

WAGs declare war on Capello following their World Cup ban

London, Sep 12 (ANI): England’s WAGs have blasted coach Fabio Capello after he banned them from the World Cup in South Africa and laid down strict rules for them.

Capello insisted that his stars will not go to the tournament for a holiday, and warned their wives and girlfriends: “If you don’t like it, don’t come.”

He ruled that his current squad can have just one day with their partners and families after each game next summer. And that will be the only socialising allowed.

The WAGs hit back after the team boss insisted the South Africa trip will not be a “holiday” by saying that they were a vital part of the beautiful game, the Daily Star reports.

Speaking on behalf of the international players’ wives, Lizzie Cundy, 38, wife of ex-Chelsea ace Jason, 39, said: “Fabio has made the wrong decision.”

Danielle Lloyd, 25, who is dating Portsmouth loan signing Jamie O’Hara, 22, says WAGs are vital to the game.

“I understand Fabio’s concern. It isn’t a good idea for the wives and girlfriends of the footballers to be taking them away from their careers. But it is important for us to be supporting our partners, as that will also help them with their game. I always make sure Jamie eats well and rests in the run-up to a game so he’s in the right frame of mind,” she said.

Lizzie added: “I admit that at the last World Cup the WAGs did hit the headlines but they’ve learned their lesson and have all grown up a bit.”

Capello’s hardball threat came after England’s last trip to the World Cup finals turned into a circus when the WAGs took over the picturesque town of Baden Baden in Germany. There were parties every night and the players were in almost daily contact with their loved ones. (ANI)

Capello warns WAGs World Cup in South Africa is no holiday

London, Sep 11 (ANI): England coach Fabio Capello has laid down strict laws for WAGs, and is determined that team takes the World Cup in South Africa seriously.

England’s last trip to the World Cup finals turned into a circus when the WAGs took over the picturesque town of Baden Baden in Germany. There were parties every night and the players were in almost daily contact with their loved ones.

Capello insisted that his stars will not go to the tournament for a holiday, and warned their wives and girlfriends: “If you don’t like it, don’t come.”

Capello has ruled that his current squad can have just one day with their partners and families after each game next summer. And that will be the only socialising allowed.

The 63-year-old Italian, whose team qualified for the finals, said: “I hope this period that we are at the World Cup will be very long. The players will have one day with their family, with the girls and friends. It will be one day a week, after each game and that is enough. That’s it.”

Asked if there was any danger it could be like Baden Baden, Capello replied: “No, absolutely not. Please. If they do not want to come for the day, then they should stay home. I like what we’ve had at training where the players stay together. We are going there to play, not for a holiday.”

Stars like Rio Ferdinand and Frank Lampard have admitted the WAGs’ presence affected the team under Sven Goran Eriksson in the 2006 World Cup, where Portugal won their quarterfinal on penalties, The Sun reports.

Some of the WAGs have started planning for South Africa, checking accommodation in Rustenburg, England’s most likely training base. (ANI)

Chidambaram discusses counter-terrorism, 26/11 update with US officials

Washington, Sept 10 (ANI): Indian Home Minister P. Chidambaram held meetings here with senior Obama administration officials, including National Security Advisor Lt. Gen. (retired) James Jones, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and the U.S. Attorney General Eric H Holder Jr. on Wednesday.

Enhanced co-operation between India and US on tackling terrorism particularly in South Asia dominated the discussions, sources said.

Pakistan’s inaction in dealing with the perpetrators of 26/11 was also raised.

Chidambaram also met Senator Dianne Feinstein, the Chairwoman of Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.

Chidambaram is scheduled to meet the Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Thursday.

On Tuesday, officials from FBI, intelligence and security agencies and the New York Police briefed Chidambaram about the measures being taken by them to prevent a Mumbai-type terrorist attack.

From walking at the Penn Station, to a briefing by the New York Police, which had made several changes in its counter-terrorism measures post the 26/11 attacks, Chidambaram and his team of officials got to know what a mega city like New York can do to protect itself from terrorists without inconveniencing its residents.

Chidambaram was also informed about the coast guard facility at Staten Island. It was an important aspect of his trip given that the terrorists who attacked Mumbai on November 26 last year entered Mumbai through the sea route.

Within hours of his landing in New York, Chidambaram visited the Joint Terror Task Force Centre of the FBI where he was given an exclusive briefing by the New York Police Department.

Before leaving New York City for Washington by train, Chidambaram was briefed about security of the Mass Transport System at the Penn station.

The Home Minister is also scheduled to meet the top US intelligence and security officials, including FBI Director Robert Mueller and Director of National Intelligence Dennis C Blair; besides meeting National Security Adviser, Gen (Retd) James Jones at the White House. A tour of the National Counter-terrorism Centre in Virginia is also on his itinerary.

Besides meeting experts and think-tanks” members, Chidambaram is expected to hold talks with key US lawmakers, including Senator Joe Lieberman, Chairman, Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee; and Congressman Sylvester Reyes, Chairman, House Select Committee on Intelligence. Musharraf may meet Obama in October during US ‘lecture tour’

Islamabad, Sep.9 (ANI): Former Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf may meet President Barack Obama in October, when he visits the United States for a lecture tour.

According to Musharraf’s lawyer, Chaudhry Fawwad, the former general will be arriving in Washington on September 14 for his 40-day US trip.

Musharraf is being paid a whopping fee of 300,000 dollars per lecture to various American think tanks and other institutions, Fawwad said.

Only former US president Bill Clinton is being paid as much for delivering a lecture and nobody else is being paid more than this amount,” PKonweb quoted Fawwad, as saying.

Musharraf is expected to deliver lectures in 17 American states during his tour. (ANI)

New York/Washington, Sep.9 (ANI): India’s Home Minister P. Chidambaram on Tuesday, was briefed by officials from FBI, intelligence and security agencies and the New York Police about the measures being taken by them to prevent a Mumbai-type terrorist attack.

Within hours of his landing in New York, Chidambaram visited the Joint Terror Task Force Centre of the FBI where he was given an exclusive briefing by the New York Police Department.

Before leaving New York City for Washington by train, Chidambaram was briefed about security of the Mass Transport System at the Penn station.

In Washington, Chidambaram will meet with top Obama Administration officials, heads of intelligence and security agencies and influential lawmakers over the next three days.

Apart from discussing the 26/11 dossiers that India has submitted to Pakistan,Chidambaram will also discuss issues related to combating financing of terrorism and steps which will need to be taken in this regard as well as with regard to prevention of money laundering.

Ways to strengthen Indo-US anti-terrorism cooperation are among the issues likely to figure prominently in the talks on Wednesday and Thursday.

Chidambaram will meet his counterpart Janet Napolitano; Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and Attorney General Eric H Holder.

Washington, Sep 8 (ANI): American actress Evan Rachel Wood is reportedly dating her ‘True Blood’ co-star Alexander Skarsgard.

According to celebrity blogger Perez Hilton, Wood, 22, had recently been linked to E.R. actor Shane West, but is said to have moved on to Swedish actor Skarsgard, 33, after meeting him on the set of the hit vampire TV show, reports Contactmusic.

The pair have been spotted enjoying a string of dates, including a soccer match and a boat trip.

Wood even jetted into Louisiana over the weekend to keep the actor company during breaks from filming the ‘Straw Dogs’ remake. (ANI)

Malaysian envoy asks countrymen to take care on Indian roads

New Delhi, Sep 2 (ANI): Malaysian High Commissioner to India has advised his fellow countrymen to take extra precaution as the spate of fatal Indian road accidents involving them is worrying.

High Commissioner Tan Seng Sung said recent accidents, where Malaysians lost their lives showed that travellers need to be more careful when planning their travel to India.

“They must hire proper drivers and have their travel insurance ready when making trips to India,” Tan said on the sidelines of Malaysia’s 52nd National Day celebration in Delhi on Monday.

Over 200 guests, including foreign diplomats, Indian officials and Malaysians attended the event hosted by the High Commission at a hotel here.

The envoy’s comments came in the wake of a recent accident in Leh, in the Kashmir region, where three Malaysian women were killed while another is still missing after their vehicle toppled into a ravine.

Another woman, who is part of the Malaysian entourage on the trip suffered severe injuries and is still recuperating in a hospital here, The NST Online reported.

In April this year, a van ferrying a group of Malaysian pilgrims to Haridwar, a Hindu holy site, collided with another vehicle, killing the tour guide and his assistant.

Two Malaysian women, who were injured in that accident, later died in a hospital in Delhi.

A month later, two sisters, one a journalist of the New Straits Times, were badly injured when the taxi they hired rammed into an oncoming car. (ANI)

Jordan ruins her kids’ holiday with Peter Andre

London, Aug 31 (ANI): Former model Katie Price, a.k.a. Jordan, is said to have ruined her kids’ holiday with her estranged hubby Peter Andre, after she leaked the location on her Twitter page.

Andre, 36, was due to fly out to a secret resort on the Italian island of Sardinia with Harvey, 7, Junior, 4, and two-year-old Princess Tiaamii on September 1, but had to cancel after Jordan, 31, revealed the location.

“Heard Pete doing shoot with the kids in sardina (sic) an going Tues dont know why he is doing a shoot he has set up every other one in papers sad!” the Daily Star quoted her as having written on her Twitter page.

But pals of Andre have insisted that he had no intention of using his children in photo opportunities.

“Pete is very, very upset about this,” said a close friend.

“He and the children were really looking forward to spending some time together on holiday.

“He’d planned this trip in secret to avoid attention but now she’s managed to act like a real selfish bitch and ruined everything.

“Pete had chosen the resort because it was private and he could take the kids around to different activities without being hassled.

“Far from wanting to be photographed the whole purpose of the visit was to avoid photographers.

“Kate may have used the kids for publicity but Pete hasn’t,” the friend added. (ANI)

The guitarist believes that the frontman’s launch of his own new clothes label, Pretty Green, has gone to his head.

Centre withdraws security cover given to twenty-four VIPs

New Delhi, Aug 29 (ANI): As part of its comprehensive review and rationalisation of the VIP security system, the Union Home Ministry has withdrawn X-category security over of over twenty-four individuals,

The Ministry also decided to reduce the number of personal security officers (PSOs) from three to two to be deployed for X category security.

After the review former Chief Justice of India Y. K. Sabharwal, former MP and Bollywood Star Govinda, former MP Anwar Hussain, UP politician D.P.Yadav, Shoaib Iqbal MLA from Matia Mahal in Delhi, and two Delhi-based journalists and some local leaders from different northeastern states will lose security cover from next month.

Home Ministry sources, the ministry is planning similar reviewing of the Y and Z-category list in due course so that more police personnel are available for actual policing in Delhi.

The ministry will soon write to states to discharge central paramilitary force (CPMFs) personnel who were diverted for VIP security, sources added.

The ministry has also raised concern over the state governments lacking to provide security cover to central protectees, according to their categorisation during their tours in the respective states.

As per the VIP security guidelines, no central protectee can retain his/her Delhi-based PSO beyond 72 hours while on an outstation trip. The PSO is thereafter required to report back to Delhi, leaving the onus of protecting the VIP on the state police.

Meanwhile the Home ministry is also planning to reduce the security cover given to former Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil, National Commission of Scheduled Castes Chairperson Buta Singh, former External Affairs Minister Natwar Singh and Lok Jana Shakti Party Chief Ram Vilas Paswan and others.(ANI)

Indian cricket team toils at Bangalore conditioning camp

Bangalore, Aug 28(ANI): The Indian cricket team sweated hard on Friday, the second day of a four day conditioning camp that is being held at the M Chinnaswamy stadium here.

The conditioning camp before team’s trip to Sri Lanka is being held under the watchful eyes of coach Gary Kirsten, fielding coach Robin Singh and trainer Ramji Srinivasan.

Apart from regular exercise sessions, the players played football as part of their fitness regime.

India will participate in a tri-series in Sri Lanka that features New Zealand from Sept. 8-14. It has not lost a one-day series in the past year following a surprise tri-series victory in Australia last February.

India has recalled Rahul Dravid to the one-day team for the first time in almost two years to bolster their batting in Lanka and on pacy South African pitches at the Sept. 22-Oct. 5 Champions Trophy.

Batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar has also returned after opting out of the one-day series in the West Indies, which India had won 2-1.

Ishant Sharma will spearhead the five-man pace attack in the absence of experienced left-arm pacer Zaheer Khan, who has been ruled out of action until the end of the year following surgery on an injured shoulder.

The selected team for Sri Lankan series includes Mahendra Singh Dhoni (captain), Yuvraj Singh, Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, Rahul Dravid, Suresh Raina, Yusuf Pathan, Harbhajan Singh, Ashish Nehra, Rudra Pratap Singh, Ishant Sharma, Dinesh Karthik, Praveen Kumar, Amit Mishra and Abhishek Nayar. Salman Khan puts off US trip fearing detention by immigration officials

Washington, Aug 28 (ANI): Bollywood star Salman Khan who is scheduled to go to USA early next month reportedly cancelled his visit on Friday.

According to sources Khan decision comes in the wake of the humiliation faced by Sharukh Khan at New Jersey Airport.

Khan is scheduled to partake in a promotional event of his upcoming movie ” Wanted” besides participating in an auction of his personal paintings to raise funds for charity.

Khan’s decision was also propelled by the hard time being given by the US Consulate in Mumbai in approving the visa of his associates, including one of his family members, whom Salman wanted to bring along with on the promotional trip, sources said.

Besides Khan, producer Boney Kapoor, Bollywood star Sridevi and Prabhu Deva were also scheduled to attend the promotional event.

Following the Shahrukh Khan episode, which attracted a lot of media publicity both in India and the US, there is a sense of reluctance among local promoters and organisers of Bollywood events to risk inviting stars, sources added.

Khan’s decision has put a bug question mark before the promoters and also local organisers in cities like Chicago, Houston and Dallas who have invested a lot of effort and money in organising these events. (ANI)

Brit boy, 17, becomes youngest solo round-the-world sailor

London, Aug 27 (ANI): A 17-year-old Briton has become the youngest person to circumnavigate the world solo with assistance.

According to his team, Mike Perham raced past the finishing line between Lizard Point and Ushant, France, in his 50ft yacht Totallymoney.com at 9.47 and 30 seconds on Thursday.

Mike set sail from Portsmouth, Hampshire, on November 15, 2008 and celebrated his 17th birthday in the South Indian Ocean on March 16.

The teenager braved 50ft waves, gale, stormy winds and various other technical difficulties to successfully complete the 30,000-mile challenge.e crossed Portugal, the Canaries, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand during the voyage.

He also travelled across the Panama Canal on his trip.

The adventure freak, who is also the youngest person to cross the Atlantic Ocean at 14, crossed the equator and every longitudinal line to set up the world record.

The Telegraph quotes Craig Glenday, editor-in-chief of Guinness World Records, as saying: “This is another incredible achievement, and it marks Mike as the consummate record-breaker – someone who’s continually prepared to set themselves new and more challenging goals.

“Even the most experienced of sailors would be tested by the mental and physical stamina required to achieve a record of this magnitude. The fact that Mike achieved it at such a young age is a testament to his courage and unparalleled sense of adventure.” Oz Jesse Martin who’d completed the world voyage aged 18 years 104 days held the record previously but Mike has achieved the feat at the age of 17 years and 164 days.

Mike was ecstatic after setting the record.

He said: “I’ve made it, I’ve made my dream come true and it feels amazing. A big big thanks to my dad, mum, all the sponsors and every one who has helped me along the way. I can’t believe that the Royal Navy has sent HMS Mersey and a helicopter to witness my crossing the line. I feel very honoured.”

His father, Peter, said: “Mike is a very special son, he has done incredibly well. He has shown that with determination, you can succeed even in the most adverse circumstances.

“He has shown the world that he is an extraordinary young man and an inspiration to us all.” (ANI)

Britney Spears to end Circus in “nice place” Melbourne

Melbourne, Aug 27 (ANI): Britney Spears has decided to end her Circus world tour with a final performance in Melbourne, Australia.

The singer wants to finish off her tour in “a nice place” and wants to celebrate her birthday on December 2, according to her promoter Paul Dainty.

The ‘Womanizer’ hitmaker had three shows lined up for the town before adding one more.

“It is her first trip to Australia and she is really excited. We really wanted more shows in Melbourne … so we talked at length with her management and they thought why not,” News.com.au quoted Paul as saying.

Spears will play at Rod Laver Arena from November 11-13, after which she’ll perform in Sydney and Brisbane.

Ultimately, she will come back to Melbourne for her final show on November 27.

Paul added: “It is by far the biggest pop spectacle to be seen here in years,” (ANI)

Xinjiang separatists are doomed to fail, says Chinese President

Uygur (China), Aug. 26 (ANI): Chinese President Hu Jintao, who made his first trip to the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region since last month’s deadly riot, has warned the separatists that they are “doomed to fail”.

The July 5 riot, which killed 197 people and injured more than 1,600, were masterminded by the “three forces” of terrorism, separatism and extremism both at home and abroad, he said.

“The separatists don’t have the people’s hearts and are doomed to fail. Their sabotage activities will not shake the stable development of reforms in Xinjiang,” China Daily quoted Hu, as saying.

The president promised that more solid measures would be taken to beef up economic growth and social development in Xinjiang, and to improve the living and production conditions of the people of various ethnic groups.

Hu congratulated the armed forces, militia and police for their role in ending the July 5 riot in Urumqi, saying: “The key to our work in Xinjiang is to properly handle development and stability.”

He added that the success in quelling the riot and maintaining stability in Xinjiang fully demonstrated the power of the Party and the people as well as the strength of solidarity among ethnic groups in Xinjiang.

“Neither will they (separatists) sway the Xinjiang people’s determination to build a prosperous and harmonious socialist Xinjiang,” he said. (ANI)

Sujata Koirala says she skipped India trip due to illness

Kathmandu, Aug 26 (ANI): Nepal Foreign Minister Sujata Koirala has said that she failed to accompany Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal in his maiden visit to India purely due to health reasons.

At the Nepali Congress Parliamentary Party office where she was summoned to furnish clarification as to why she dropped out of Prime Minister’s visit to India, Koirala, said that there were no other intentions behind it other than the sudden illness she developed on the eve of departure.

Earlier, Koirala had turned down the parliamentary party’s call to be present at the party headquarters on this case, instead sending a written statement where she said she was compelled to cancel her India trip because she was ill.

However, there were rumors that she pulled out of the scheduled India visit due to her dissatisfaction over Madhav Kumar not promoting her to the post of the Deputy Prime Minister.

At the previous parliamentary party meeting majority of the Nepali Congress lawmakers had said that Koirala’s decision to skip the visit to India not only damaged the party’s and country’s credibility and demanded that Koirala be recalled from the cabinet, Nepalnews reported. (ANI)
