Mamata Banerjee hits out at Leftists

New Delhi, Sept 16 (ANI): Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee hailed the good showing of Trinamool Congress in civic polls in Darjeeling district as victory over state-sponsored terrorism.

In the 47-member district council, the Trinamool Congress and the Congress combine bagged 15 seats each. The Left Front, led by the Communist Party of India (Marxists) won 17 seats.

“I think this is a victory of democracy against state-sponsored terrorism, the autocracy and every day they are making conspiracy against the United Progressive Alliance and the central government and the central ministers also. This is their habit. This fort was absolutely the red fort and you know how Darjeeling … it is a prestigious district. It is a very prestigious victory,” Banerjee told reporters in national capital New Delhi.

Banerjee also accused the State Government of not helping the Central Government’s efforts to curb Maoists.

“P. Chidambaram is very correct. He said he was trying his best but he was not getting any help from the State Government. When the Central Government is trying to do something, then the state police are giving information to the Maoists that the Central police are coming. They did not allow the Central police to come to the actual area where they exist,” said Banerjee.

Maoists have formally been labelled as a terrorist group by the Central Government. (ANI)

UAPA will not be misused in West Bengal: Bhattacharjee

Kolkata, July 9 (ANI): West Bengal Chief Minister Budhadeb Bhattacharjee announced today in the West Bengal state assembly that his government would see to it that the Unlawful Activity Prevention Act (UAPA) is not be misused.

Replying to a question Bhattacharjee said provisions in the Act were tough and those having links with Maoists or indulging in propaganda might be arrested.

To prevent the misuse of the UAPA, the state government has decided that, police will arrest suspects under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and a high level committee headed by the state Home Secretary will take a decision on who would be booked under the UAPA, Bhattacharjee said.

Bhattacharjee also alleged that the Maoists had links with the Trinamool Congress and were active in Nandigram and Khejuri. He appealed to all political parties to avoid association with the Maoists.

He informed that 39 persons had been arrested in which 30 were from West Midnapore, five in Bankura and four in Purulia.

Bhattacharjee announced the government’s decision to create a special cell in the state Intelligence Branch and Crime Investigation Department to counter the Maoists. (ANI)

Suspected militants torch CPI (M) offices

Jhargram (West Bengal), June 23 (ANI): As Central paramilitary forces along with local police continue action against Maoists in Lalgarh area of West Bengal’s Medinipur district, ultras and some anti-social elements elsewhere in the region attacked and set afire the office premises of the ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Monday.

The attack was carried out during the night at Jhargram in West Medinipur district in which certain Maoist factions set afire the local office premises of the CPI (M).

However, CPI-M functionary of Jhargram alleged that the goons who ransacked the party office and indulged in arson belonged to the rival Trinamool Congress (TMC) party.

“Yesterday night some anti-socials came around 12 in the midnight, wrecked our party office and set it on fire. However, they are not Maoists. They are Trinamool Congress (TMC) party goons who came from nearby areas,” said Rabi Sarkar, a local party functionary of CPI (M), Jhargram.

Besides, in the neighbouring Purulia district, the office premises Centre for Indian Trade Union (CITU), the labour union wing of CPI-M was also targetted and set on fire.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, in Lalgarh area, the security forces remained on alert waiting for the Maoists to emerge out of the jungle areas.

The Maoists confined to their camps at Banspahari jungles which overlap the districts of Bankura and Purbi Medinipur and also from Purulia, are impatiently waiting for the right moment to strike at their opponents – the security forces active in Lalgarh.

With covered faces, the Maoists seem to have prepared themselves for guerrilla warfare, from the jungles, which they have made their homes.

This, in turn, has placed around 18 police stations in these three districts to be on red alert and counter the threats posed by the Maoists.

The security forces have been deployed on the fringes of the forests, along the highways.

Commenting on these developments, Sameer Mitra, a former Deputy Inspector General of Border Security Force presently residing in Kolkata said that the Maoists would strike only when the security forces offer themselves up as soft targets.

“They will never come into direct confrontation until and unless they have found a soft target, like during the movement of a particular patrol which has been sent to collect information or to seek them out. If the patrol gets smaller in size and is not very vigilant and alert, the Maoists can certainly take them on,” said Sameer Mitra, retired Deputy Inspector General, Border Security Force (BSF).

The State and Central security personnel were compelled to start the combing operation to flush out Maoists from Lalgarh, after the ultras in the guise of supporting the People’s Committee against Police Atrocities (PCAPA), torched a police station and offices of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) killing several of their party activists. Congress-DMK talks fail

New Delhi, May 21 (ANI): The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) today announced that it would now give outside support to the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government after talks failed on the issue of ministerial berths in the Cabinet.

“Congress’ proposal is not acceptable to us. There was no formula on establishment of government in 2004. The DMK has decided to offer support to the Congress from outside,” senior DMK leader T. R. Balu told reporters here.

According to sources, Congress’ refusal to hand over the crucial Telecom and infrastructure related portfolios to the DMK was the stumbling block.

Earlier, stuck by ‘berth’ pangs, the Congress was grappling with other allies like the Trinamool Congress (TC) who were doing hard negotiations to get plum portfolios as Manmohan Singh gets ready to be sworn in on Friday for a second consecutive term as Prime Minister.

On a day of conflicting reports, the DMK with 18 MPs, the third largest constituent in the UPA coalition, was said to be demanding three Cabinet portfolios, two Ministers of State with independent charge and two at the Ministers of State level.

DMK chief Karunanidhi’s son M K Azhagiri, his grand nephew Dayanidhi Maran and T R Baalu are among the Cabinet probables from the party while his daughter Kanimozhi is among the likely candidates for the MOS slot.

Reports said the Congress was keen to give two Cabinet berths, four MOS slots including two with independent charge. Mediators were trying to work out the final modalities of an agreement. (ANI)

‘It is Congress’ prerogative to allocate portfolios’, says Mamata

New Delhi, May 21 (ANI): Trinamool Congress (TC) Chief Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said that it was the Congress’ prerogative to allocate portfolios.

“Let the Congress decide who gets what? We have not made any specific demand. Won’t mind if I don’t get a Cabinet berth,” Banerjee said after attending the meeting of the pre-poll allies of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) here.

Mamata, who was unanimously elected leader of the TC parliamentary party on Monday, has already stated that her party would not bargain for portfolios.

Meanwhile, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Praful Patel said the seat-sharing deal has not been cracked as yet.

Patel further said that one more round of negotiation is left.

Meanwhile, after a third round of negotiations between the Congress and the DMK, the latter has come up with a demand of three Cabinet berths, two Minister of State with Independent Charge berths and two Minister of State.

The Congress, on the other hand, is willing to give six berths, including two Cabinet berths, three Minister of State berths and one Minister of State with Independent Charge berth.

Earlier, both had arrived at a formula that could end the deadlock over who from the DMK would make it to the Union Cabinet.

The Congress negotiation team comprises Pranab Mukherjee, Ghulam Nabi Azad and Ahmed Patel, while the DMK team includes M. Karunanidhi, T. R. Balu and others. (ANI)

President invites Manmohan Singh to form government

New Delhi, May 20 (ANI): President Pratibha Devisingh Patil invited the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh to form the new Government at the centre after he claimed that he had the support of 322 members of Parliament.

On Wednesday evening, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi called on President Pratibha Patil to stake the claim to form the government.

The President handed over to Manmohan Singh the letter to form the Government. He and the new Council of Ministers will take oath of office and secrecy on May 22.

After meeting the President, Dr. Manmohan Singh said that apart from its 274 seats, the UPA has the support of Samajwadi Party, Rashtriya Janata Dal and Bahujan Samaj Party.

The outside support of RJD, SP and BSP takes the UPA’s tally to 322 seats.

Earlier, the crucial UPA meet to decide Cabinet berths concluded at 10 Janpath, the residence of Congress president Sonia Gandhi. All the key pre-poll partners of the Congress attended the meeting.

National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah, Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee, DMK chief M Karunanidhi, NCP president Sharad Pawar and leader Praful Patel were present. Senior Congress leaders who attended the meeting included, Manmohan Singh, Sonia Gandhi, Pranab Mukherjee, P. Chindambaram, A.K. Antony and Rahul Gandhi.

Sonia Gandhi was re-elected UPA chairperson during the meeting. Her name was proposed by Karunanidhi and seconded by Mamata Bannerjee .

All eyes are now on the likely candidates who would head some of the most important ministries in the next Congress-led UPA government.

The Ministry of Human Resource Development, headed by Congress leader Arjun Singh could throw up a surprise. Pranab Mukherjee has indicated that he would like to remain as the Finance Minister. Kapil Sibal’s name is doing the rounds as the new Foreign Minister. Rahul Gandhi has stated that he would like to remain outside the Government but speculation is rife that he may agree to join the Cabinet. (ANI)

New government begins taking shape

New Delhi, May 19 (ANI): Political activity in the national capital has picked up with various parties jostling and lobbying for their representatives’ inclusion in the new cabinet.

With the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) convening a meeting of its victorious parliamentarians in Parliament House, the major contenders bidding for inclusion are Rashtriya Janata Dal chief and former Railway Minister Lalu Yadav, who has been a steady supporter of the Congress, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief and former Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar and Tamil Nadu’s ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), which defied political odds and emerged victorious in the general elections.

The Congress, which has achieved a decisive popular mandate, is debating over whether it needs to include Samajwadi Party supreme Mulayam Singh Yadav in the cabinet, as his party, which is ready to offer outside support, played a crucial role in extending support to the UPA during the debate over the US-India nuclear cooperation deal.

There is speculation by certain elements within the Congress, who feel that the Samajwadi Party wavered during the elections, and that it would be a better option to rely on leaders of smaller parties like Ajit Singh of the Rashtriya Lok Dal, H D Kumaraswamy of the Janata Dal (Secular) and Omar Abdullah of the National Conference.

The Bahujan Samaj Party, which is led by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati, has said today that it is ready to extend outside support to the UPA Government.

The Congress will also have to be mindful of the fact that it does not enjoy majority status in the Rajya Sabha and that the inclusion of some of these groups in the government would help the Congress to push its program through the Upper House.

Within the Congress, there is a possibility that younger elements like Jyotiraditya Scindia, Milind Deora and Sachin Pilot may be accommodated in the Cabinet.

Insofar as the profile of the cabinet is concerned, the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, will have to take crucial decisions like who he would like as his Railway and HRD Ministers and whether to include or not to include Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee in the cabinet. There is also speculation that former Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission and Dr. Singh’s close confidant, Dr. Montek Singh Alhuwalia, will be made the Finance Minister.

As far as the profile of the Prime Minister’s Office is concerned, the expectation is that National Security Adviser M.K.Narayanan will continue in the same assignment as he has been able to maintain an even keel during the management of several crises, and has a background as Director of the Intelligence Bureau and head of the Joint Intelligence Group.

Former PIO and now media adviser to the PM, Deepak Sandhu, is also expected to be retained. The new government will also be on the lookout for a new Home Secretary, as the present incumbent, Madhukar Gupta is to superannuate after receiving an extension. A new Foreign Secretary is expected to be in place by July with the superannuation of present incumbent Shiv Shankar Menon.

Among other expected to get fresh assignments are former Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran, who played a notable role in finalizing the US-India civil nuclear cooperation deal. (ANI)

Mamata Banerjee ready to support, work with UPA

Kolkata, May 17 (ANI): Refusing to indulge in political bargaining, Trinamool Congress Chief Mamata Banerjee on Sunday said that she is ready to support the new United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government at the Centre.

“The Trinamool Congress will support and work with the Congress-led government at the Centre. We are not in favour of political bargaining. Even when I became the railway minister during the NDA regime, I did not care for it. I hate bargaining,” Banerjee said at a press conference here.

Banerjee further said that she was happy that the Congress would not have to take the support of the Communist Party of India- Marxist (CPM).

Banerjee, whose party won 19 Lok Sabha seats, said she wanted stability, development, people’s security, a solution to unemployment and electricity crisis.

When asked that RJD chief Lalu Prasad was also seeking the Railway ministry, Banerjee said it was of no consequence to her.

“Let the government work for five years,” she added. (ANI)

PM wants Montek Singh Ahluwalia as Finance Minister?

New Delhi, May 17 (ANI): As the Congress core committee brainstorms over the issues related to government formation, there are reports that Dr. Manmohan Singh wants deputy chairman of the Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia as the next Union Finance Minister.

Ahluwalia will have to enter the cabinet through the Rajya Sabha route, the same as the Dr. Singh, CNN-IBN reports.

With party leaders insisting that the UPA does not need the support of any new big allies, the Congress is also likely to keep key portfolios with it.

There is also a demand from within the party to bring Rahul Gandhi into the Cabinet especially after his successful campaigning strategies, particularly in Uttar Pradesh.

According to the sources, Rahul is likely to be included as the Rural Development Minister in the Cabinet.

Sources revealed that the new Cabinet would include several young MPs.

The other young MPs apart from Rahul who are likely to be inducted into the Cabinet include Sachin Pilot, Jitin Prasada, and Sandeep Dikshit.

The major UPA allies such as the Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam (DMK), the Trinamool Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) also are expecting ministerial berths.

Reports claimed that the UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi has already called up Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad to attend the Cabinet meeting.

There are speculations doing rounds that the External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee will be shifted to the Finance Ministry, which the Manmohan Singh has been handling so far.

Commerce Minister Kamal Nath is likely to be shifted to the External Affairs Ministry.

Home Minister P Chidambaram and Defence Minister A K Antony are likely to continue in their posts. Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal may get the Commerce Ministry. (ANI)

Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Jaya Prada has won the Rampur seat, while Congress leader Deepender Singh Hooda beat his nearest rival Nafe Singh Rathi of INLD by over four lakh votes in the Rohtak constituency. (ANI)

Congress, BJP discuss strategies to shore up their numbers

New Delhi, May 14 (ANI): As the countdown begins for the 16th May results, the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday discussed strategies to shore up their numbers for government formation.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi held a meeting at her residence to discuss the party’s strategy for possible post-poll alliances.

Congress Spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan expressed confidence that her party would lead the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government post- 16th May.

When asked whether the Congress would do any business with the Left, Natarajan said the decision will be taken by the party and the leadership.

The BJP also held its strategy session in the morning at the residence of its prime ministerial candidate, Lal Krishna Advani, to discuss post poll alliances.

BJP President Rajnath Singh and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi were present at the meeting.

BJP Spokesperson Prakash Javadekar discounted the Left supporting a Congress-led government, saying he did not see a major role for the Left.

“Left is saying no BJP, no Congress. Let them pursue the line,” Javadekar said.

Javadekar also referred to political pitfalls in stitching up alliances.

“If the Congress takes Left’s support, it’s ally in West Bengal, Trinamool Congress, may snap ties,” he added. (ANI)
