Time to bet on spin

India’s young captain Suresh Raina has managed to get what Mahendra Singh Dhoni could not.

First, he got leg-spinner Amit Mishra and left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha, who have been playing musical chairs in the last one year, in the team for the tri-series in Zimbabwe. And as icing on the cake, the selectors picked R Ashwin, a talented off-spinner from Tamil Nadu, following his decent showing in the IPL

The skipper, thus, has an enviable variety in his spin arsenal.

While the squad to Bangladesh for the Test series in January had three spinners, it is after a fairly long time that the Indian team is travelling abroad with three spinners, covering all varieties, for a one-day series.

Though skipper Raina said the young bunch of pacers would shine in the outing, the spin department will be his best bet. “We have a bunch of talented youngsters and it will be good opportunity for all of us,” the 23-year-old said at a press conference here before the team’s departure. “We have experienced players in the spin department and are keen to do well in Zimbabwe.”

For Mishra and Ojha, who have been pushing hard for the second spinner’s spot in the Asia Cup team, the next two weeks will play a crucial role in checking in for the Asia Cup, starting June 15.

Young and restless

Amid the Mishra-Ojha rivalry, Ashwin would hope for a tweak in his fortunes. But he is rooted to the surface. “I am not thinking about the Asia Cup at the moment – my focus is only on this tournament,” he said. “We have three good spinners in the team, so it’s not about hoping for a place in the next series but about doing your job and cashing in on any opportunity that comes your way (in Zimbabwe).”

The 23-year-old opened with the new ball for his IPL side, Chennai Super Kings, and added a new dimension to his bowling. And though he said that “helping each other is more important” while playing for the country, Ashwin is shrewd enough to realise the importance of that move. “When someone talks about me, they will know I can even open the bowling as an off spinner. That opens up a lot of options,” he said.

But the trip will be a point to prove for all three, as they will get a chance to firm up their place on the international stage, according to Ashwin.

Calm with experience

Being the most experienced among the trio, Mishra, making a comeback, knows the huge expectations and therefore wants to keep things simple. “There is no point in thinking too much ahead,” he said.

“One needs to be calm and just try to bowl properly using variations. If you keep thinking about your place in the team and lose focus, chances are you may end up nowhere,” Mishra added.

Performance matters

Ojha, meanwhile, rubbished the idea that the performance in Zimbabwe may not count for much. “There is also another team – Sri Lanka,” he said, “and this is an international tournament, so taking wickets won’t be easy.”

All three, though, are aware that only one of them will pass the test for the Asia Cup. With Harbhajan Singh set to retain his spot in the trip to the Emerald Islands, the trio will hope to make the most of this low-key event.

Besides the May 28-June 9 tri-series, also involving Sri Lanka, India play two T20 internationals against hosts Zimbabwe on June 12 and 13.

New Zealand Cricket chief Vaughan game for annual cricket series in US

Auckland, Apr 24(ANI): New Zealand Cricket Chief Executive Justin Vaughan predicts that the Black Caps will play annually in Florida, as part of the new partnership between NZC and USA Cricket (USACA).

The comment comes after it was formally announced that New Zealand and Sri Lanka will play a three-match Twenty20 series in Florida next month at the Central Broward County Regional Park Cricket Stadium between May 20 and May 23.

“We’d like to think the Black Caps would play there annually,” Stuff.co.nz quoted Vaughan, as saying.

“Ideally we’ll go there to or from tours to the West Indies or on the way to England. They will always be short series. Possibly we’ll play Pakistan there,” he added.

Vaughan further said there are enough Asians and West Indians in the U.S. for cricket to get a following, and believes the facilities in Florida are up to international standard.

“I think it’s going to go well. It would be great if other countries followed our lead and played there,” Vaughan said.

“Quality-wise, the USA have still got a way to go with their cricket, but I’m sure in three to five years they would like to see themselves in a tri-series or something,” he added.

Earlier, USACA Chief Executive Donald Lockerbie had said that the series has the potential to help grow and develop the game in the U.S.

“We believe that in order to grow the game of cricket in the USA, we need to have the best teams in the world play in our country,” Lockerbie said.

“We want to demonstrate to the American public just how exciting the T20 format is. Cricket is already popular here but has lacked major media coverage. This inaugural series is the first step to reverse this situation,” he added. (ANI)

Indian cricket team leaves for South Africa

Mumbai, Sept 18 (ANI): The Indian cricket team left for South Africa from here on Friday to participate in the Champions Trophy.

South Africa has been a happing hunting ground for India who was runners-up in the one-day World Cup in 2003 and Twenty20 World Cup champions four years later.

India has received a boost before their Champions Trophy campaign when in-form opener Gautam Gambhir was passed fit to return after injury.

The left-hander has recovered from a groin strain and will travel with the team to South Africa, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said in a statement on Thursday.

India, already without the explosive Virender Sehwag, were sweating on Gambhir’s fitness after the Delhi batsman missed this month’s tri-series in Sri Lanka.

India won the Colombo tournament, also involving New Zealand and the hosts, and went into the prestigious eight-team event as one of the favourites after not having lost a one-day series in the past year.

India has been grouped with defending and world champions Australia, Twenty20 champions Pakistan and former champions West Indies in the preliminary phase.

A young Indian batting unit struggled against short-pitched bowling in this year’s Twenty20 World Cup in England.

Ishant Sharma will spearhead the five-man pace attack in the absence of experienced left-arm pacer Zaheer Khan, who has been ruled out until the end of the year after undergoing surgery on an injured shoulder. (ANI)

Bhajji uses blog to defend his jab at ANI cameraman

Colombo, Sep.10 (ANI): Off spinner Harbhajan Singh used his blog on Thursday to defend his jabbing of an ANI cameraman at the Bangalore International Airport on Wednesday.

Bhajji said that he did not slap any cameraperson. He also said that he would never do that as he respects the media and always cooperates with them.

He also said he is focusing on taking the team in attaining the top spot by winning the tri series in Colombo.

Harbhajan jabbed at the photographer after his camera glanced his turban while he was unloading his luggage.

He gave an angry stare at the cameraman even as a security personnel tried to push back the lensmen who had virtually mobbed the cricketer. (ANI)

Indian cricket team leaves for Sri Lanka, Kirsten rues Sehwag’s absence for tri-series

Chennai, Sep. 9 (ANI): Before boarding a special Air Indian flight for Colombo on Wednesday,Indian cricket team coach Gary Kirsten said the team would draw inspiration from its past success in Sri Lanka and also cope with the “huge” loss of explosive opener Virender Sehwag during the the tri-series involving Sri Lanka and New Zealand in the island nation.

The Indians will play their first match against Sri Lanka on Thursday.

Asked who would be opening the innings with Gautam Gambhir, Kirsten said, “We are not sure about the combination. We would decide it on the day of the game. But obviously, missing Sehwag is huge. He is a high quality player and any team would love to have him in the mix. But we have got a lot of depth in the team.”

Kirsten also said that he was quite excited about Rahul Dravid’s return to the team after being out for close to two years.

“It’s great to have him. With the sort of experience he brings, it’s going to help the team. It’s great,” he said.

A clean-sweep in the short series would catapult India to the top of the ICC ODI rankings and Kirsten said being the best in the world is high on the team’s list of targets for the next eight months.

“We have set our goals. One of them is to be the best cricket team in the world. We are headed that way and we are very excited. We know we have to perform well as we continue the quest to be the best,” Kirsten said.

He said that the six week long break for the team was great.

Asked about the team’s chances in the tri-series, Kirsten said, “We won the last two series in Sri Lanka and we are confident. But we think ahead and don’t harp on the results ofthe past. We have got a good batting line-up which is quite flexible in the middle. We would like to mix it up during the series.” (ANI)

Kiwis relieved about Sehwag’s absence during tri-series

Colombo, Sep.8 (ANI): New Zealand cricketers have expressed relief that swashbuckling Indian opening bat Virender Sehwag will not feature in the tri-series in Sri Lanka and in the upcoming Champions Trophy in South Africa because of a shoulder injury.

A shoulder injury means New Zealand avoid one of the most devastating strikers of a cricket ball.

It maybe recalled that during the recent one-day series in New Zealand, Sehwag had tonked 299 runs at an average of 74.25 to help India win by a margin of three games to one.

“It is a relief,” said vice-captain Brendon McCullum when asked about the significance of Sehwag not leading off the Indian order in against New Zealand on Friday.

“The way he played against us in the home summer, he was pretty terrifying at the top of the order,” stuff.co.nz quoted McCullum, as saying.

“He really tore us apart so to not have him in their team is a bit of a blow for them,” he added. (ANI)

Cricket world’s first digital trophy up for grabs during Lanka tri-series

Colombo, Sep.8 (ANI): The trophy to be given to the winner of the tri-Series between Sri Lanka, India and New Zealand in Colombo is no longer just an inanimate object that will gather dust in a cricket boardroom cabinet. Rather, it will be the world’s first digital silverware.

Tournament sponsors Hewlett Packard’s Compaq Cup has broken new ground by incorporating an LCD screen into the 4.8kg award. Match-winning moments for the triumphant squad, key statistics, photographs and fan messages will be uploaded once the winner has been determined so the holder will be able to revisit memories of their success, stuff.co.nz reports.

Fans can log on to www.compaqcup.com and leave messages of support for their favourite players and team; the top 10 entries decided by the television commentary team will also be uploaded.

The tournament starts today when Sri Lanka play New Zealand. New Zealand and India clash on Friday before Sri Lanka host their neighbours 24 hours later.

The top two teams contest Monday’s final before all three head to South Africa for the Champions Trophy, which starts on September 22. (ANI)

Sehwag will be missed by Team India, says Gautam Gambhir

Chennai, Sep 4 (ANI): Cricketer Gautam Gambhir on Friday said that swashbuckling opener Virender Sehwag, who is sidelined due to injury, will be desperately missed by the team during the tour of Sri Lanka as well as the Champions Trophy.

“Any team will miss Sehwag (Virender Sehwag) because he was in such a form, that would have been a great advantage for any team,” Gambhir said.

Gambhir said this on the sidelines of ceremony held in Chennai, where he was appointed the brand ambassador of MRF.

India has announced the squad for the Sri Lanka tri-series followed by the Champions Trophy, in which they have recalled Rahul Dravid and left out Sehwag due to his shoulder surgery.

Gambhir further sad that international cricket was all about handling pressure, and you have to continuously deliver for the team.

“When you are playing international cricket it’s all about the pressure. You should know how to handle it and you should be able take that responsibility, which is very important and the responsibility only comes when the team starts expecting that you can deliver,” he said.

The series in Sri Lanka, which also involves New Zealand, will be held from September 8 to 14. (ANI)

Mohammad Kaif hopes for a comeback

Chandigarh, Sep 4 (ANI): Indian batsman Mohammad Kaif has said that he was hopeful of making a come back to the national squad.

Talking to reporters here Kiaf said he was hopeful of making a come back to the national squad.

“You can just perform, that’s only thing in your hand. A lot of players who used to play with me are making a come back. That’s a good thing. Like I said that so many tournaments are taking place that any good performance can provide you a place in team. I am hoping for a come back. I am working hard for this,” he added.

Kaif who represents Air India (Blue) was practising at the nets for Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) corporate cup.

The eight day ‘Inter-Corporate National Cricket Tournament’ featuring 12 corporate teams being held at four centres, is expected to generate employment opportunities for domestic cricket players in India’s corporate houses.

Kaif played last of his 125 one-day internationals on November 2006 against South Africa in Port Elizabeth.

The BCCI corporate cup began simultaneously in Bangalore and Dharamshala on Tuesday.

India declared the squad for the Sri Lanka tri-series followed by the Champions Trophy in August. (ANI)

Corporate trophy to boost employment opportunities for cricketers

Dharamsala, Sep 2 (ANI): The eight day ‘Inter-Corporate National Cricket Tournament’ featuring 12 corporate teams to be held at four centres, is expected to generate employment opportunities for domestic cricket players in India’s corporate houses.

The tournament began simultaneously in Bangalore and Dharamshala on Tuesday.

The participating teams are set to compete for the winning amount of Rupees 1 crore.

Cricket players believe that the tournament, given official status by the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI), is a good opportunity especially for domestic cricket players.

“It is a very important tournament, the BCCI has given it official status, even if it hadn’t it would still be important for cricketers as they are playing for their company. It is also an opportunity for cricketers to get employment and it will be good for them, so it is a good tournament,” said Rohan Gavaskar, cricketer.

A season starter, the tournament is believed to be good for the players who haven’t played for the past few months and a warm up for top players before the one-day tri-series in Sri Lanka starting on September 11 and the ICC Champions Trophy in South Africa.

“Keeping in mind the timing of the tournament, the guys have had a couple of months break, they haven’t played for a couple of months before the season starts again. So it will be a good time for them to have a hit and also for the selectors to have look at some of the new youngsters,” said Hemant Badani, another cricketer.

Known players such as Harbhajan Singh, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, RP Singh, VVS Laxman, Mohammad Kaif, Rahul Dravid, Ajit Agarkar are also participating in the tournament. (ANI)

Keen contest expected at One Day tri-series cricket in Sri Lanka

Bangalore, Sep 1 (ANI): Former New Zealand skipper Stephen Fleming has said that the upcoming One Day tri-series in Sri Lanka would see a tough competition.

The series in Sri Lanka, which also involves New Zealand and India, will be held from September 8-14.

The hosts are upbeat after clinching a recent two match test series over Kiwis 2-0.

“Well I think Sri Lanka is a decent side…this series is going to be great…India is of course a good one day side, New Zealand have been in one day format. So, Kiwis are the underdogs…” Fleming told reporters here on Monday.

India earlier this month declared the squad for the Sri Lanka tri-series followed by the Champions Trophy, recalling Rahul Dravid and leaving out explosive batsman Virender Sehwag due to his shoulder surgery.

The former captain, Dravid’s last one-day international appearance came in October 2007 before selectors opted for a more youthful side with an eye on the 2011 World Cup.

Indian selectors hope Dravid will bolster the batting in the Champions Trophy on pacy South African pitches. A young Indian batting unit struggled against short-pitched bowling at the Twenty20 World Cup in England in June.

Sachin Tendulkar returned to the frame after opting out of the one-day series in the West Indies, which the tourists won 2-1 last month. (ANI)

Rahul Dravid | Rahul Dravid ODI Comeback | Rahul Dravid all set for ODI comeback |  Dravid in Line for Tri Series in Sri Lanka

The Indian selectors are looking to pick a common 15-member squad for the tri-series in Sri Lanka and the Champions Trophy, when they meet to pick the side on Sunday.

Rahul Dravid is all set to make a comeback to the ODI team after a gap of nearly two years. He is likely to replace struggling Rohit Sharma in the middle-order, which has been India’s major cause of concern in recent times.

Dravid has not played an ODI for India since October 2007 but rather than any particular brilliance on the part of a man who has already amassed over 10,000 runs, necessity will perhaps dictate this decision.

Another boost will the presence of Sachin Tendulkar.

Virender Sehwag will still require a long recovery process which not only means that he is ruled out for the tri series but also, has cast a shadow of doubt on his participation in the ICC Champions Trophy in South Africa.

Suresh Raina will come back from injury and Rohit Sharma has suffered a serious slump for team India which means that India will be low on experience. Zaheer Khan’s injury will also weaken the bowling attack and will require Ishant Sharma to pick his game after the lacklustre performance in England as well as in the ODI series in the West Indies.

Ashish Nehra is likely to be a part of a squad as also, R.P. Singh.

UP pacer Sudeep Tyagi may be the dark horse after his superb performance in IPL-II and recently concluded Emerging Players’ tournament Down Under.

In the spin department Harbhajan Singh and Pragyan Ojha are the likely choice. However, leg-spinner Amit Mishra may get a look-in in place of Pragyan Ojha.

BCCI finalises venues for ODI series against Australia

The Indian cricket board Wednesday finalised the seven venues for the one-day series against Australia in October-November.
The Tour Programme and Fixtures Committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that met here to decide the fixture of the 2009-10 season at the Cricket Centre decided that Guwahati, Mumbai, Jaipur, Hyderabad, Delhi, Mohali and Nagpur will be hosting the series from Oct 25 to Nov 11.

The BCCI in a statement said that the schedule will be finalised after working out the logistics.

The fixture for the tri-series in Sri Lanka involving India and New Zealand will be finalised at the BCCI working committee meeting in August.

The committee also decided that the Duleep Trophy will be played on a knock-out basis while the inter-state Twenty20 tournament will be named the Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy.

There was some disappointment for women cricketers as they will not get to play any Tests in the 2009-10 season and would be concentrating on ODIs and Twenty20s.

In the junior group, both the C.K. Nayudu (under-22) and the Cooch Behar Trophy (under-19) will be played in elite and plate format on home and away basis. (IANS)

Kiwis will seek to diminish Sehwag’s importance on series outcome: Vettori

Christchurch (New Zealand), Feb.25 (ANI): The New Zealand cricket team will seek to put pressure on explosive Indian opener Virender Sehwag during the series that includes two Twenty20 matches, five one-day internationals and three Tests.

New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori made no attempt to diminish the influence the 30-year-old could exert throughout the tour.

“Sehwag creates a lot of momentum for them, he can take a game away from a side quite quickly. A lot of our emphasis is on him and their opening partnership,” he said.

“If we can put some pressure on India early, maybe that gives us a chance but if those guys get away it will be hard to pull them back in,” he added.

“If you look at the batting line-up, and look at their records and statistics and you almost sit back in awe,” Vettori admitted.

“Now, they’re coupling that with a pretty impressive seam attack and one of the best spinners in the world in Harbhajan (Singh),” he added.

Sehwag is set to take centre stage, albeit briefly, when India’s tour gets underway at the AMI Stadium here when the first of two Twenty20 slogfests are held under lights.

Sehwag, who first caught New Zealand unawares when he blazed a match-winning century during a Tri-Series encounter in Colombo, Sri Lanka eight years ago, is an obvious danger as the star-studded Indian team strive to start their 10-match tour on a high.

According to stuff.co.nz, the opener will set down an early marker when the tourists make their first attempt to assimilate to New Zealand conditions.

It will also be the home side’s first opportunity to implement bowling strategies against Sehwag, who averages 51.06 in Tests with a strike rate of 78 runs per 100 balls.

However, Vettori accepted the expectation on his side were high despite the Indians holding superior International Cricket Council (ICC) rankings in each format. (ANI)

Dubai tri-series cancelled due to Sri Lanka’s unavailability

Karachi, Feb 13 (ANI): Pakistan cricket received a further blow on Friday with the cancellation of a tri-series in Dubai scheduled for late March due to the unavailability of Sri Lankan team.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chief Operating Officer Salim Altaf said that the event would be scrapped.

“We have been told by organisers that the tri-series has been cancelled because, I believe, the Sri Lankan team is unavailable,” said Altaf.

The third team was to be Bangladesh, the Dawn reported.

Altaf said he did not know why Sri Lanka could not participate.

The event was part of a nine million dollar deal with Dubai Sports City last year, which was to provide Pakistan with cricket at neutral venue after foreign teams refused to tour the country over security fears. (ANI)

Pakistan to play tri-series in Dubai

Karachi, Feb.1 (ANI): Pakistan will be playing a three nation one-day international series in Dubai in April 2009.ri Lanka and Bangladesh will be the other two teams taking part in the tournament, The Nations reports.

According to the Pakistan Cricket coach Intikhab Alam, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has signed a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Dubai Sports City, and the proposed tri-series is a part of the same.

Commenting on the refusal of the Australian cricket team to tour Pakistan due to security concerns, Alam said the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is ready to host the Kangaroos on any neutral venue also.

“Scotland, Ireland, United Arab Emirates, Malaysia are being considered as the venues for neutral territory for ODI series against Australia,” he said.

Alam added that there is no threat to teams touring Pakistan and the recent successful staging the three match series against Sri Lanka is a testimony to the fact. (ANI)

Mendis doesn’t carry extra burden of expectations: Jayawardene

Karachi, Jan 19 (ANI): Sri Lankan skipper Mahela Jayawardene has refused to single out spin sensation Ajantha Mendis as the major threat for Pakistan in the one-day series.

The 23-year-old Mendis and his more famous partner Muttiah Muralitharan are tipped to hold the aces against the home team in the three-match series, which starts here from Tuesday, The News reported.

But Jayawardene said Mendis doesn’t carry extra burden of expectations.

Mendis, who made his debut in the West Indies in May last year, became the fastest bowler to get 50 wickets, achieving the total in 19 matches, breaking Indian Ajit Agarkar’s record of 23 matches.

Jayawardene said he would not like to put extra pressure on the newcomer.

Jayawardene refused to agree Sri Lanka are struggling with their overall form after losing to Bangladesh in the last league match and scrapping to a narrow two-wicket win in the final of the tri-series in Dhaka last week.

Chasing a modest 153, Sri Lanka lost their first five wickets for a mere six runs — the lowest total at the fall of five wickets in any one-day international — before Muralitharan’s 16-ball 33 saw them home.

Jayawardene admitted Pakistan are a dangerous team.

“Pakistan is always Pakistan for me. They are a very tough side whether they play regularly or not, so we will have to put up the best effort,” said Jayawardene.

The second match is here on Wednesday, while the final match will be played in Lahore on Saturday. (ANI)

Sri Lanka can jump over England and Pakistan in ODI rankings: ICC

Dubai, Jan.19 (ANI): Sri Lanka will move up two places to fifth in the Reliance Mobile ICC ODI Championship table if it beats Pakistan in all three ODIs coming up in Karachi and Lahore.

According to an ICC media release, Mahela Jayawardena’s team currently lies in seventh position following a tour of mixed results in Bangladesh. In a tri-series that also involved Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka lost one match to the home side but later exacted revenge in what was a thrilling and closely fought final.

The Sri Lankan cricket team is in Karachi for the first ODI that takes place on January 20, knowing that a 3-0 result in the series will ensure it leap-frogs both Shoaib Malik’s men and also sixth-placed England.

However, the reverse result would relegate Sri Lanka from its current tally of 105 ratings points to 102 which would still be significantly ahead of eighth-placed West Indies, which has 91 points to its name at present.

Victory for Pakistan in the series will ensure it keeps the pressure on India and a 3-0 win for Shoaib will put his team within one point of Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s side.

The Bangladesh v Zimbabwe series is underway today (19 January) in Dhaka with the visiting team hoping to move past Ireland into 10th place in the ODI Championship. To do this it needs to win the series 2-1 or 3-0 while a 1-2 defeat will still gain it one ratings point but that would not be enough to overtake the Irish.

Meanwhile, Australia’s Nathan Bracken has slipped below Daniel Vettori at the top of the Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings for ODI bowlers after the first two ODIs against South Africa. Kyle Mills has received a similar boost as his captain meaning New Zealand can now boast two bowlers in the top three.

In the two games so far, Bracken has taken one wicket at an average of 87.00 and that was enough to let the Black Caps’ skipper back to top spot.

The two left-armed trans-Tasman rivals have been trading places for some weeks now and with three ODIs still remaining in the current series, not to mention five coming up between Australia and New Zealand next month, there is no sign of an end to that yo-yoing just yet.

Mills has benefited from the fact that Muttiah Muralidaran of Sri Lanka and Australia’s Mitchell Johnson have fallen back. Murali was not his usual dominant self in Bangladesh, taking four wickets in three matches, while Johnson was not in the Australia ODI squad for the first two matches of the South Africa series.

There is better news, however, for Murali’s spin partner Ajantha Mendis. The winner of Emerging Player of the Year 2008 at the LG ICC Awards has taken another leap and broken into the top 20 for the first time in his career.

His seven wickets, taken at an impressive average of 10.85, have gained him nine places in the rankings to joint-16th position, level with West Indies’ Daren Powell.

Of course, it was a competitive tri-series for host team Bangladesh as the home side beat Sri Lanka on one occasion and almost did so again in the final.

The main beneficiary of Bangladesh’s success was Shakib Al Hasan, who has broken into the top five in the Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings for ODI all-rounders. The 21-year-old scored 153 runs in the series at an average of 76.50 and a strike-rate of better than a run a ball while also managing to collect five wickets for 69 runs at an average of 13.80 and an economy-rate of just 2.65.

That effort has gained him three places in the all-rounders’ list, putting him above Jacques Kallis of South Africa and Pakistan’s Shoaib Malik but still behind Jacob Oram of New Zealand in first place and England’s Andrew Flintoff second. He has also moved up 10 places to 34th in the Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings for ODI batsmen.

Speaking of the batting rankings, Ricky Ponting has gained one place to sixth in the list while Kallis has gained three places to 13th spot. India’s Sachin Tendulkar is up one place to 11th position.

The news is not so good for Michael Hussey, who drops one place to fourth with Shivnarine Chanderpaul benefiting from his misfortune. Also, Protea Herschelle Gibbs has fallen three places to 18th position.

A notable big mover in the latest batting chart is Australia opener Shaun Marsh, whose innings of 79 and 78 in the first ODIs of the series have earned him 31 places and he now sits in 32nd position, nicely poised for further gains if his impressive form holds. (ANI)
