Simon Cowell may quit American Idol

Washington, April 14 (ANI): American Idol judge Simon Cowell is considering quitting the popular TV show.

The 49-year-old, who judges three shows – ‘American Idol,’ ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ and ‘X Factor’ – told Britain’s Daily Mirror newspaper that he’s not sure he can keep up the pace and ‘one may have to go.’

“I don’t want to come over as whiney because I am very grateful that I have got these jobs. But there is a point where I am not sure we can keep this schedule up,” Usmagazine.com quoted him as saying.

“It takes longer and longer to make these shows because you have to put more into them, and I am not sure we can sustain me doing three shows a year, with the record label and the TV production company.

“Most people do one show a year and I do three and they involve a lot of traveling. One may have to go. I don’t know which one. That is the problem, I like all of them.

He said that he “can’t imagine not doing Britain’s Got Talent and I can’t imagine not doing X-Factor. But I guess America is more likely to go because I have got one year under contract. Maybe that will be the end.” (ANI)

Turkish man arrested for plotting to kill Obama

Ankara (Turkey), Apr.7 (ANI): Turkish police have arrested a man for plotting to kill US President Obama.he Secret Service said the man was arrested last Friday in Istanbul. A spokesman of the service said the president was never in any immediate danger.

Security has been tightened around the traveling White House press corps due to suspicion of phoney members in the media. The scrutiny of press baggage intensified as news outlets left Prague for Ankara on Sunday and before departing Ankara today for Istanbul.

In Prague the carry luggage of every member of the traveling White House press corps was “swept” by the Secret Service on the tarmac before they boarded the press charter-highly unusual since the corps were not flying with the president aboard Air Force One.

This “sweep” consisted of Secret Service dogs searching the luggage to see if they “hit” on anything suspicious.

No one on the charter was personally searched with a hand-held metal detector. The increased scrutiny was applied only to the traveling press corps’ carry-on luggage. (ANI)

Paris Hilton’s brother wants to pursue music career

New York, Apr 3 (ANI): Paris Hilton’s brother Barron has no intentions of following in the footsteps of his sister – he’s determined to give up the party life to pursue a career in music.

“I want to be an international singer-songwriter,” the New York Post quoted Barron, as saying.

“I’m sick of all the Hilton stuff, where all anyone cared about was whether I was doing coke in the bathroom or how many [bleeps] I was sleeping with. I’m done with partying and traveling. It’s time to get this [bleep] started,” he added.

Hilton, who’s recording tracks at his Upper East Side apartment, isn’t signed to a label, but is developing a reality show with Viacom.

“It’s gonna be like ‘The Hills,’ but real. A lot of that stuff is pre-setup or re-setup. This is gonna show the meetings, the production side, the recording side . . . I just want people to say, ‘Wow, this song really moved me, or made me cry,’ “he said. (ANI)

Intikhab Alam seeks Broad’s apology for his ‘sitting ducks’ comments

Lahore, Mar.12 (ANI): Terming match referee Chris Broad’s statement on the Lahore terror attack as ‘appalling’, Pakistan cricket coach Intikhab Alam has sought an apology from Broad.

“I must say that I was hurt by Chris Broad’s appalling allegations against Pakistan as well as our cricket team after the incident. He must apologise for those comments,” The News quoted Alam, as saying.

Alam said that Broad’s comments had hurt the sentiments of the people of Pakistan, and urged the International Cricket Council (ICC) to take the issue seriously.

“The ICC should take this issue very seriously and should ask Broad to apologise to Pakistan for his comments that have hurt us deeply,” he added.

Earlier, Broad, who was traveling in a minivan with other match officials behind the bus carrying the Lankan players, had strongly charged the Pakistani security officials of not ensuring their safety during the attack.

“There was not a sign of a policeman anywhere. They had clearly left the scene and left us to be sitting ducks,” Broad had said.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had also lodged an official complaint with the International Cricket Council (ICC) in this regard. (ANI)

Peace and reconciliation convention held in Nagaland

Federer: I’ve become more human

Federer: I've become more human Melbourne – Even ice-calm Roger Federer admits that his stress levels have eased in recent months as he slipped from tennis’ top ranking.

Still ranked second, the Swiss star said that he feels an eerie calm as he pursues a fourth title in six years at the Australian Open.

“Maybe I’m a bit more relaxed,” he said after passing the first round against Italy’s Andreas Seppi. “When you’re number one you put your head down, you try to win as many tournaments as possible.”

He admitted: “Maybe sometimes you forget to enjoy it as much as you can, because everything happens so quickly.”

While he’s not about to give up his quest to replace Rafael Nadal atop the ATP rankings, Federer said he has come to appreciate the slight dialing down of the tension level at his current position.

“It’s nice time to be number one, having everybody talking about you. But I’m getting older. I’m enjoying myself more. I still love the traveling. I love competing out on centre court. Those are good feelings,” he said.

“But maybe today, after a tough year, sometimes you can show more because you’ve been through a tough time. I show maybe a bit more emotions, a bit more happiness, which maybe people didn’t see before.”(dpa)

Runaway stars create weird ‘cosmic sculptures’

London, Jan 8 (ANI): The Hubble Space Telescope has discovered 14 runaway stars speeding through dense interstellar gas, creating weird cosmic sculptures known as ‘bow shocks’.

Astronomers led by Raghvendra Sahai of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory had been searching for ageing, bloated stars with Hubble’s Advanced Camera for Surveys in 2005 and 2006, before the instrument failed permanently in 2007.

But, according to a report in New Scientist, when the researchers studied the images, they noticed 14 young stars that were shooting through interstellar gas, creating ‘bow shocks’ in front of them that resemble the water waves created at the bow of a speeding boat.

The bow shocks form where particles streaming from the stars in stellar ‘winds’ plough into surrounding gas.

“When I first saw the images, I said, ‘Wow, this is like a bullet speeding through the interstellar medium’,” Sahai said in a statement.

Similar bow shocks had been observed in the 1980s by the Infrared Astronomical Satellite. But, those bow shocks were much larger than the ones observed by Hubble, suggesting they were produced by more massive stars with more powerful stellar winds.

“The stars in our study are likely the lower-mass and/or lower-speed counterparts to the massive stars with bow shocks detected by IRAS,” said Sahai.

He added that low-mass stars outnumber their higher-mass counterparts, suggesting the newly found stars represent most of the universe’s stellar runaways.

The stars’ winds suggest they are just millions of years old, and their bow shocks suggest they are traveling through the interstellar gas at more than 180,000 kilometers per hour, about five times as fast as most young stars.

As to what accelerated them to such speeds, scientists cite one possibility as that the stars began their lives in pairs, but got boosted to high speeds when their partner exploded in a supernova.

Alternatively, the stars may have been involved in a gravitational run-in with two or three other stars and got kicked out in the process.

It is estimated that if they are just a million years or so old and are moving at about 180,000 km/h, they must have traveled about 160 light years from their birthplace.

The team plans to search for more such runaway stars and will also continue to scrutinize the existing Hubble observations to see if the stellar speedsters have much of an effect on the gas clouds they are traveling through, since turbulence can prevent gas clouds from condensing into new stars. Biden”s trip to Asia raises concerns among experts in Washington

Washington, Jan.7 (ANI): Incoming U.S. Vice-President Joe Biden’s proposed trip to Asia before he leaves his present assignment as the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, is raising concerns in the corridors of power in Washington.

According to Politico, Biden will be traveling to Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Experts say that Biden’s trip is raising concerns because he may use the opportunity to send “not-very-subtle signals” about U.S. policy in the Obama administration, even as George W. Bush is still in office.

Biden first ran the South Asia trip idea by Bush administration officials several weeks ago, said Bush spokesman Gordon Johndroe.

“We discussed the trip and reviewed it in advance with them,” Johndroe said. “We are facilitating the trip administratively where necessary.”

But that didn’t stop some serious eye-rolling by others on the Bush team. “It’s certainly unique,” quipped a senior Bush administration official. “And I’ll just leave it at that.”

Biden described the nature of his trip to reporters Tuesday after his swearing-in ceremony. “I’m going to come back and report where I think things stand in each of those countries now,” he said.

But the trip, which Biden’s Senate office announced on Monday as a “fact-finding” mission, calls into question just who exactly is speaking for the United States abroad in the waning days of the Bush administration, particularly as tensions heat up between India and Pakistan over who is to blame for the recent bombings in Mumbai.

“This is a very delicate time,” said Thomas Donnelly, the resident fellow in foreign and defense policy studies at the conservative American Enterprise Institute. “It’s hard to see what positive he could do. On the other hand, the potential for confusions, missteps or a gaffe are greater than usual.”

It would be awkward at best for a Vice President-elect Biden to be greeting foreign leaders and dignitaries in Afghanistan or Pakistan while the current vice president is back in Washington giving exit interviews.

As for how he’ll make sure foreign leaders know he’s there as a senator not as vice president-elect: Biden will go out of his way to make it clear that he’s not there to propose policy, an official said.

Lisa Curtis, a senior fellow on South Asia at The Heritage Foundation, said it could be worthwhile to have Biden in the region when tensions are so high but it could also stir confusion.

“That’s kind of strange to be saying ‘I’m not coming out as a representative of the Obama administration’ even though he’s taking over as vice president in a matter of days. It may be a bit awkward for foreign officials in the region to know how to receive him,” Curtis said. “Most people he meets with are going to be thinking of him as the vice president-elect.”

Biden will be gone for about a week. His office would not reveal in advance where he is traveling, citing security precautions.

Biden will resign from his Senate seat after he returns from the trip, just days before he is sworn in as vice president. (ANI)
