Electrolux Turns Ocean Garbage Into New Vacuums

Electrolux is raising awareness of plastic waste in the oceans by putting plastic collected from waters around the world in peoples’ homes.

The maker of various home appliances is creating a limited number of vacuums made with plastic gathered from oceans and seas, through its Vac From The Sea initiative, to bring attention to how much plastic is ending up in floating around in marine environments and harming animals.

Not only does plastic that is in oceans kill birds and other creatures, but plastic out in the sea breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces over time, bringing with it worries that as fish and other animals eat the bits of plastic, that trash works its way back up the food chain until it ends up on our plates.

The issue of plastic waste in the ocean has now been documented and tracked by a number of groups and awareness initiatives, like 5Gyres and the Plastiki expedition, but this is the first time a company has fused that issue with its products.

Along with awareness of plastic in the ocean, Electrolux is using the campaign to note that the supply of recycled plastic on land is much lower than the demand, noting that is that plastic staying out of the waters, it would more easily find its way into recycled-content consumer products.

Scissor Sisters trash an entire album

London, May 8 (ANI): American pop band Scissor Sisters have revealed that they flushed a full-fledged album on which they had been working for 18 months.

Lead singer Jake Shears said that they scrapped the songs from their third album last summer and started from scratch, reports BBC.

“If it wasn”t something we could fully get behind and believe in, I think the band was going to be over,” Shears said.

“If we put out anything sub-standard it was curtains for Scissor Sisters,” he added.

“We worked on a record for about a year and a half but we shelved it. We shelved it about a year ago,” Shears said.

“I ended up moving to Berlin for a couple of months and we decided to start a new record from scratch, and we started it last June. So this record was written very quickly,” the 31-year-old singer added.

Referring to the collection of songs originally intended for the third album, Shears said: “In my heart I knew it wasn”t right, I didn”t really know what it was trying to say. It left me a little bit cold.” (ANI)

Cheated women take revenge by smashing partners’ cars

New York, Apr 28 (ANI): Women are more likely than men to seek revenge if they found out their partner was cheating on them, with 10 percent of angered females targeting their man”s motor, a poll has found.

The poll of 3,000 people by the Autoglass company found that three in every five people would seek revenge if their partners cheated on them.

Of those who decide to get even, 22- to 25-year-olds are the most likely to smash a car windshield, reports The New York Daily News.

“Our research clearly shows that in the UK most people won’t turn the other cheek when it comes to infidelity,” Autoglass managing director Nigel Doggett said, according to the Independent. “And as the car seems to be one of the prime targets for getting even, this poll should serve as a warning to anyone thinking of straying.”

Social worker Irina Firstein said: “When a spouse has an affair, it is a rejection and a betrayal of the promise or agreement that it implicit in a marriage or a committed relationship. We have notions about what is fair and not fair, and this is not fair in our minds. The impulse for revenge often translates into an action, which of course means hurting the other person.”

And as to why trash the cheater’s car, Firstein said: “It’s like kicking a guy in his privates.” (ANI)

Vandals trash public service cars

Police in Geraldton are investigating the vandalism of a dozen cars at the Department of Agriculture and Food’s office.

The windows of 10 departmental cars and two CSIRO vehicles had their driver’s side window smashed sometime between Friday evening and Sunday morning.

The offenders are believed to have scaled a fence to gain entry to the staff car park on Gregory Street.

Nothing was stolen but the offenders rifled through the glove boxes of the vehicles.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police.

Jolie visits ‘dire’ refugee camp in Kenya

Washington, September 14 (ANI): Angelina Jolie recently visited a refugee settlement camp in Africa.

As United Nations Goodwill Ambassador she spent a day at the Dadaab Refugee camp on the Kenyan border.

The beauty was appalled to see the conditions of 285,000 refugees living in a camp, which was initially made for just 90,000 people.

Somali people, who have fled into Kenya because of atrocities in their country, live in the camp.

The ‘Gia’ star wants to bring world’s attention to the plight of the refugees.

“If this is the better solution, then what must it be like in Somalia? The toilets are already overflowing. There is not even enough space for trash dumps so people are living amongst the garbage,” Contactmusic quoted her as saying.

“What is amazing is that as more and more people come into the camp, the Somali families continue to be generous with what little they have, even if that means having one eighth of the water they need and their children suffering from dehydration,” she added.

The beauty met some families in the camp too.

She said: “The Somali families I met today are full of warmth and affection. I wish more people could meet them because then they would have a stronger desire to help.” (ANI)

Chris Brown to wash cars, pick up trash as assault punishment

Washington, Sept 4 (ANI): R and B singer Chris Brown will be washing cars, picking up trash and removing graffiti as a part of the community service ordered by court for assaulting Rihanna.

The 20-year-old star has been given five years probation and ordered to serve six months hard labour in his home state of Virginia after pleading guilty to assaulting the ‘Umbrella’ hitmaker in February (09), reports Contactmusic.

Brown’s punishment has been revealed in a letter from Richmond, Virginia Police chief Bryan Norwood to the court in Los Angeles where Brown was sentenced.

The letter reads, “It is my understanding that the Court desires the imposed community service to be labour intensive. Along those lines, we are prepared to put Mr Brown to work in the community performing manual labour tasks, such as graffiti removal, trash pick up, washing cars, cleaning, maintaining grounds, etc.”

Brown has also been asked to pick up the bill for extra security during his punishment in case members of the public find out his location.

The letter adds, “He will be responsible for paying any costs incurred regarding the facilitation of this arrangement to include adequate security from the public (in the event they become aware of his presence) and one-on-one supervision where special projects are instituted.” (ANI)

Berlusconi brands escort girl’s sex claims “trash and lies”

London, June 28 (ANI): Silvio Berlusconi has blasted an escort girl’s claims that he slept with her.

Italy’s billionaire prime minister was accused by Patrizia D’Addario, 42, a former actress from Bari in southern Italy, who claimed that the 72-year-old had sex with her on the night of November 4, when Barack Obama was elected president of the United States, at Palazzo Grazioli, Berlusconi’s Rome residence, reports The Times.
he had described the experience: “I never slept . . . He was tireless, a bull.”

Berlusconi has branded her account “trash and lies”, saying he did not remember her. He had never paid a woman for sex, he explained, adding: “I never understood what the satisfaction is when you are missing the pleasure of conquest.”

Berlusconi is embroiled in a host of scandals from his links to an aspiring teenage model, Noemi Letizia, 18, to a messy and potentially expensive divorce from his wife of 20 years, Veronica Lario.

D’Addario told last week that she had gone twice to Berlusconi’s Rome residence on the promise of earning 1,700 pounds. (ANI)

Gisele Bundchen’s residential area plagued by rats

Beijing, May 28(IANS) Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bundchen’s place is horrified with rats as they have plagued her residential area.

Bundchen screamed in horror after seeing one of the rodents, who have infected the street in New York’s West Village area where she lives alongside stars including Rupert Everett and Michael Cera, reports China Daily.

“There’s been a parade of big fat rats every night. You can hear shrieks from fighting rats and from girls walking by who see the rats. They come out from a building where the owner hasn’t bothered to replace stolen garbage cans, leaving the rats to fight over all the trash on the street,” said a source.

Nepalese Sherpa conquered Everest for 19th time to create environmental awareness

Washington, May 25 (ANI): A man from Nepal conquered Mount Everest for a breathtaking 19th time on May 21 to create environmental awareness.

Apa reached the summit of the world’s highest peak as part of Eco Everest Expeditions, aiming to educate climbers about their impact on the Himalayas and highlight the affects of climate change on the region.

“I want people to see that our mountains are really fragile and vulnerable to what we do as humans,” CNN quoted Dawa Steven, leader of the expeditions, as saying.

Dawa Steven said that apart from the impact of warming temperatures on the Himalayas there are more direct impacts from climbers.

“There’s a big problem with human waste on the mountain. Toilet bags have been introduced on expeditions in the last two years, so it can be transported back down the mountain again,” he said.

The expedition is also encouraging mountaineers to bring down trash that they find on the mountain with a “Cash for Trash” program; Eco Everest offers 100 rupees for each kilo of trash brought back down.

The expedition teams also use parabolic solar cookers harnessing the strong sunlight of the mountain region.

“They’re really good, you just point it at the sun and about 30 minutes later you have a pot of boiling water. If I can use it in the harsh environment of base camp Everest then anyone can use it back home,” Dawa said. (ANI)

Nick Cannon accuses Eminem of ‘racial bigotry’ after Carey rap

Washington, May 11 (ANI): American actor Nick Cannon has accused rapper Eminem, real name Marshall Mathers III, of “racial bigotry” after the latter made a derogatory new track mentioning Mariah Carey.

Cannon, 28, who married Carey, 39, last year, is furious with Eminem, 36, for putting his and his wife’s name in a controversial song, which is featured on his latest album ‘Relapse’.

In his latest LP, Eminem had recorded Bagpipes From Baghdad, and in it he comments on his alleged romance with Carey – one that she vehemently denies.

“Nick Cannon better back the f**k up. I’m not playing, I want her back, you punk. Nick Cannon, you pr**k, I wish you luck with that f**kin’ whore,” Contactmusic quoted Eminem as rapping in the track.

But Cannon isn’t going to let the star get away with his comments – vowing that Eminem’s words will have “repercussions”.

“A mediocre (at best) Eminem record that sounds like it was written in 2001.

At first, I thought it was old material that had been dug up from when dude ‘fantasised’ about having a pretend fling with Mariah. … But all of a sudden I hear my name in the verse! My first reaction was like, ‘This is his new s**t? Wow, that’s too bad’,” he wrote on his blog.

“Maybe I’m going too far, but I thought we got past the days where white men could spew vulgar obscenities at our beautiful queens and get away with it.

“What’s next? Are we going to let this trash say something horrible about our lovely first lady, Mrs. Michelle Obama? Or would Marshall have talked sideways out of his neck like this about Oprah Winfrey? This act of racist bigotry cannot go unnoticed.

“Calling my wife a ‘c**t’ and a ‘whore’ is way worse than anything Don Imus could have ever said. So trust, repercussions will be served. Anybody got Al Sharpton’s number?!

“So, Miss Marshall, I’m going to make you wish you never spoke my name and regret the ungodly things you said about my wife. This is going to be fun!

It’s however you want it! Just remember, you did this to yourself! Your legacy has now been tainted from this day forth! You will now be known as the rapper who lost to corny-ass Nick Cannon!” he added.

The blog, which featured on Cannon’s official website, has since been taken down due to an overload of comments.(ANI)

Miss USA runner-up could file suit over discrimination, says legal analyst

Washington, April 22 (ANI): Miss USA runner-up Carrie Prejean, who answered she was against the legalisation of gay marriage in California, may have grounds to file a lawsuit against the pageant for discrimination, says a legal analyst.

Miss California, during the recent Miss USA telecast, had picked gay judge Perez Hilton’s question whether every state should make same-sex marriages legal.

Prejean, who lost out to Miss North Carolina Kristen Dalton, spoke against the possibility and it was suggested that it was her negative answer that may have stabbed her chances of winning.

She recently said that she believed “God was testing her character and faith” with the question and that she was glad she stood her ground.

And now, legal analyst Mercedes Colwin has said that Prejean may have grounds to turn to court.

“It’s her religious beliefs which prompted her to say ‘I don’t believe in same-sex marriages.’ So she was espousing her beliefs,” and could sue for a violation of Title VII, which forbids discrimination on the basis of religion,” Fox News quoted Colwin as saying.

Colwin added: “If she really feels some tremendous stress as a result of losing – and I’m certain she’s probably devastated from what happened to her – she can articulate a viable claim for monetary compensation for psychic injury.”

Colwin also said that “garden-variety psychic injury case” may land Prejean with 50,000-100,000 dollars if she had a medical expert to testify, otherwise she would probably bank less than 25,000 dollars if successful.

However, Judge Andrew Napolitano, senior legal analyst, countered the suggestion saying the suit would land in trash since the government was not involved in the contest and there was no violation of rights in that private enterprise.

A spokeswoman for the Miss USA pageant refused to comment. (ANI)

Levi Johnston calls Sarah Palin ‘snobby’

New York, Apr 9 (ANI): Levi Johnston, the father of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin’s first grandchild, has called her a ‘snob’ who thinks his ‘family is white trash’.

Johnston, 18, who said his appearances on the former Republican vice-presidential candidate’s campaign had been their idea, revealed in an exclusive interview on CBS’ “The Early Show” that he was heart-broken over the end of his engagement to Bristol.

He also revealed that he began sharing a room with Bristol in the Palin household a few weeks before the birth of their son, Tripp, and said that they were lying about him.

“We’re not cashing in on their name,” the New York Daily News quoted him as saying.

“I’m just trying to get my side of the story out there and letting people know who I am.

“They said I didn’t live there. I stayed there. I was like, OK, well, whatever you want to call it. I had my stuff there,” he said.

Johnston said that he’s under the impression the Palins though he’s not good enough for their daughter.

His sister Mercede seconded him by calling the Palin family as stuck-up.

“Look what they’re doing. They’re lying, trying to save theirselves. And they’re the one that asked for it,” she said.

“They brought him to the campaign. They should have known what was coming. They can’t, you know, turn around and try to take it back now,” she added.

Johnston also said that even though the pregnancy was unplanned, he has no regrets about it as his son meant the world to him.

“He’s my little boy. I don’t know what I’d do without him. When I hold him, it’s an amazing feeling. I just shake,” he said.

“I wouldn’t call any baby a mistake. I mean, I love him more than anything. I wouldn’t trade him for the world.

“I can go over there whenever I want and see my baby, but nine times out of ten, I’m not allowed to take him.

“It’s not as comfortable — they don’t think of me the same way anymore,” he added. (ANI)

Inmate’s chopped up body found in western Mexican jail

Mexico City – An inmate who was serving time for drug trafficking was murdered and chopped up in pieces in a prison in the western Mexican town of Uruapan, authorities in the state of Michoacan said Monday.

The guards at the prison, some 400 kilometres west of Mexico City, noticed the man’s absence when they went through the list of inmates after visiting hours Sunday afternoon, a spokesman for the Michoacan public prosecutor’s office told dpa.

Following a search of several hours, the remains were found inside plastic bags inside trash cans near a volleyball court.

The authorities were investigating to find the killers.

More than 7,000 people have been killed in Mexico since the beginning of 2008 in incidents linked to drug trafficking, either as violence between various drug cartels or in clashes between the cartels and Mexico’s security forces.

Scientist suggests use of rocket-powered water gun to blow away space junk

Washington, March 12 (ANI): An aerospace engineer has suggested the use of rocket-powered water gun to blow away space junk, which includes about thousands of pieces of useless equipment circling Earth.

According to a report by Fox News, the aerospace engineer in question is Jim Hollopeter, who, in the 1980s, helped design rockets that shot into orbit.

Today, some of those launchers are still cluttering up space, and Hollopeter wants to wash them away with a rocket-powered water gun.

Bits of spent rocket boosters, old exploded satellites and tools dropped by space-walking astronauts are just some of the trash racing along in the near-vacuum of space.

The volume of man-made space debris has grown so large that scientists say garbage now poses a bigger safety threat to the U.S. space shuttle than an accident on liftoff or landing.

The International Space Station (ISS) occasionally fires thrusters to dodge junk.

The problem hit home on February 10, when a defunct Russian military satellite smashed into an American one used for commercial communications, spewing shards across thousands of cubic miles.

The crash prompted Hollopeter to refine designs for a concept he had long toyed with: Using aging rockets loaded with water to spray orbiting junk.

His idea is that the extraterrestrial shower would gradually knock refuse down toward the atmosphere, where it would burn up, as would the launcher.

The water would turn to steam.

According to Heiner Klinkrad, who runs the European Space Agency’s Space Debris Office in Darmstadt, Germany, “We need to treat space like a national park – carry out what you carry in.” (ANI)

Peaches Geldof ‘ties the knot with gal pal’

London, March 9 (ANI): Socialite Peaches Geldof has claimed to have tied the knot yet another time – with a girl.

The 19-year-old has uploaded her picture in veil with pal Fifi Brown on her Facebook and Twitter profiles.

Sir Bob’s daughter, whose six-month-long marriage with rocker Max Drummey ended in February this year, has titled the snap “Just married”.

Peaches has in the past called her 25-year-old mate “future wife”, reports the Sun.

800-year-old shoe soles give scientists clues about preservation of leather

Washington, March 9 (ANI): A trove of leather soles of shoes, dating back to 800 years, is helping scientists understand how leather stays preserved in wet, oxygen-free environments.

That knowledge could aid restoration of other leather artifacts, according to a report on analysis of the old soles scheduled for the current issue of ACS’ (American Chemical Society’s) semi-monthly journal Analytical Chemistry.

The leather soles were discovered during the excavation of an 800-year-old trash dump in Lyon, France.

In the article, Michel Bardet and colleagues point out that leather consists of collagen, a tough protein that can remain intact hundreds of thousands of years under ideal conditions.

The French soles were buried in mud in the absence of oxygen – good conditions for preservation.

They used laboratory technology called nuclear magnetic resonance to compare composition of the ancient leather to modern leather.

It turned out that tannin, which helps to preserve leather, had been washed out of the old soles and replaced by iron oxides.

The iron oxides, which leached into the leather from surrounding soil, helped preserve the soles in the absence of tannins. (ANI)

RNC keeping mum about Palin’s $150,000 Wardrobe

Washington, March 5 (ANI): The U.S. Republican National Committee is keeping mum as to whether charities have been given the 150,000 dollars worth of clothing it bought for Alaska Governor during her vice presidential run last year.

So far as Palin’s spokeswoman Meg Stapleton knows, the high-priced clothing has been donated to charity.

“To my knowledge, the RNC donated the clothes, and in a quiet and respectful manner,” FOXNews.com quoted her as saying in an e-mail.

However, RNC spokesman Alex Conant has not confirmed as yet whether it has donated the clothes.

“I have nothing to add to that,” he told the website upon being asked repeatedly where the clothes have gone.

The RNC, however, denied that it was still having the clothes in trash bags at its Washington headquarters.

Stapleton said that she knew where the clothing had gone, but would not tell much out of respect for the charities that might sell them to earn money for their operations and causes.

“I did ask for the names of some of the charities. We were quite pleased with the RNC’s choices. I will not share the names of those charities, as that quiet and respectful manner to which I referred protects us from members of the media invading those charities in search of the clothes,” Stapleton said.

She even added: “The media has portrayed this as a personal Palin story. It is not. The clothes were accessories to a campaign just like the lighting and the stage. This is an RNC issue.” (ANI)

Scientists identify protein that may help understand Alzheimer’s disease

Washington, February 6 (ANI): Scientists at UC Santa Barbara say that a protein called BAG2 offers a chance to better understand Alzheimer’s disease, and identify new drug targets.

In a study paper published in the Journal of Neuroscience, the researchers have revealed that they will soon begin experiments to find out how these proteins work with mice.

The scientists have also described important activities of BAG2 in cleaning up brain cells in the paper.

The protein tau is normally found in brain cells, but it has yet to be determined why it clumps into tangles in people with Alzheimer’s disease.

Senior author Kenneth S. Kosik, co-director of UCSB’s Neuroscience Research Institute, and Harriman Chair in Neuroscience, have been involved in the study of neurons that develop neurofibrillary tangles, one of the hallmarks of the disease, since he was a postdoctoral fellow.

“Early on in my career, we were one of several labs to discover that tau was in the neurofibrillary tangles,” said Kosik.

The researchers have revealed that they recently started studying BAG2 to understand how it might be involved in the removal of tangled tau.

“It turns out that when you put this protein into the cell, it clears away the damaged tau very nicely,” said Kosik.

The team have thus far noticed that BAG2 does not clear away all the tau. It instead goes for the damaged tau protein and removes it, they add. hen tau accumulates in a neurofibrillary tangle, the cell can’t get rid of it.

“All cells including neurons have an elaborate, sophisticated, elegant system for disposing of proteins. Proteins have a certain turnover; sometimes they get damaged. The cell has its own trash can called the proteosome, and damaged proteins are deposited there,” said Kosik.

“We’ve done this experiment many ways. We’ve discovered a bit about how BAG2 works. We’ve turned it on to remove tau. We’ve turned it off to increase tau. We’ve really done a lot of manipulations using cell culture. So BAG2 is a new player, a new protein that may be a good target for study in the research of Alzheimer’s disease.

“There is nothing about a drug or a treatment in any of these findings; however, the first step in fighting any illness is finding what you want to target the drug to. This is a protein that is involved in neurofibrillary tangles, so now we have a new target for drug discovery. This is not a drug or a treatment, just a new target. The new target is BAG2.” Kosik is looking forward to studying BAG2 in mice,” added Kosik.

The researcher says that calls contain all these proteins, but they can go awry. Their levels can be off, or they may malfunction in another way. The same normal protein can begin to malfunction.

“It may be that BAG2 is not doing its job right; it may be that BAG2 is overwhelmed, because sometimes tau is building up, and there is not enough BAG2 there. We cannot conclude from this that BAG2 is the fundamental problem in the disease state. It is only a possible target that can help us find our way out of the disease,” said Kosik. (ANI)

Daniel Craig plunges into dustbin to help find guest’s missing hearing aid

Washington, Feb 05 (ANI): James Bond star Daniel Craig recently plunged his arms into dustbins at a recent dinner party – to help a fellow guest recover a missing hearing aid.

British journalist Sir Peregrine Worsthorne had difficulty hearing after the device went missing at a gathering in London’s Notting Hill.

However, he was stunned when the actor offered help and dug through the trash in the kitchen to find the aid.

“Daniel Craig, the great film star, took the lead in searching for it. Having looked in all the chairs and sofas, he turned in desperation to the dustbins, not hesitating to plunge his arms into the kitchen waste,” Contactmusic quoted Worsthorne, as stating in the New Statesman.

“When it transpired the hearing aid was not lost but hiding in my shirt, having fallen through the open collar, Craig managed to smile rather than scowl; and it was he who went to the off-licence when the booze ran out. A good sport,” he added. (ANI)

It’s great being single, says Drew Barrymore

Washington, Jan 27 (ANI): Drew Barrymore says she’s happy being on her own.

“I’ve been single for eight months,” she tells E! News.

“I’m not in the wrong relationship, and it’s great!” she says.

Barrymore stars along ex-boyfriend Justin Long in the new movie He’s Just Not That Into You – and the stunner insists they are still friends, reports Us Magazine.

Possibly, because he followed one of Barrymore’s rules for ending a doomed relationship: honesty.

“Not telling me? That pisses me off more than anything,” she says.

“I can take it. I’m a big girl. At least you know what you’re working from. ‘Oh, he told me he’s not into me?’ Well, I guess there’s nothing to analyze there. What a time saver!” she adds.

While in the interview, the 33-year-old also reminisced about her first love, Alex Rubenstein.

“He used to leave me love letters in the trash,” Barrymore said.

“I don’t know what was up with that, but he used to make sure I was looking and then throw them in the trash, run away and then I’d grab the letter.

“Not much came of that relationship. We were six or seven. It was pretty tame and mild,” she added. (ANI)
