“She”s missed her family a heck of a lot over the last couple of years… so she”s headed home.

“While I”m travelling so much, obviously I can”t give her all the attention a girlfriend needs.

Easter tourism numbers strong in south-east Queensland

The head of the Queensland Tourism Industry Council, Daniel Gschwind, says operators in the south-east corner fared better than the rest of the state over the Easter break.

He says good weather contributed to stronger visitor numbers in Brisbane and on the Gold and Sunshine Coasts.

But Mr Gschwind says poor weather has kept holiday-makers away from other parts of the state.

“Cyclone Ului has probably put a few people off making a booking to other regional areas of Queensland,” he said.

“The floods we’ve had further west have put a few people off travelling.

“So the further away from Brisbane you get, the more difficult it has been for tourism operators, perhaps with the exception of the Whitsunday interestingly enough.”

Northern Territory plans travel documentary to promote Top End tourism

Melbourne, Sept 7 (ANI): The Northern Territory is set to follow in the footsteps of Tourism Queensland to tap Chinese market, and promote Top End as a holiday destination.

The Top End is less frequently visited, and less well-known place overseas.

Two Chinese women have been chosen to travel across the Top End, while their adventures will feature on China’s largest TV station with around 520 million viewers – as well as online.

The Chinese film crew will follow the adventures of Shu Yan and ski instructor Bei Liu over the next fortnight.

Both have been chosen out of thousands of hopefuls to travel across the northernmost point on the continent of Australia.

“This campaign has had incredible success in promoting the Territory as a holiday destination to the emerging market of China,” the Northern Territory quoted Tourism Minister Chris Burns as saying.

“There were more than 35 million visitors to the website resulting in the 36,000 competition entries,” he added.

Burns insists that the NT spin-off would result in a five-part documentary of Liu and Yan as they dove with crocodiles, swam in waterfalls, and got hits of indigenous culture in Western Arnhem Land.

The idea of using a competition and online blogging to tap into the massive Chinese market followed Queensland’s Best Job in the World campaign.

The NT Government has contributed 75,000 dollars to assist in the production of the TV documentary series, including accommodation and tours for the two winners and the TV crew.

“Northern Territory wasn’t that famous as another destination before, but I hope after this event the TV documentary more people are getting to know the Northern Territory for the unique culture and natural beauty,” said Yan. (ANI)

Watkins, who had to spend the rest of the visit with Southall carrying her around, said that she had simply misjudged her landing on the slope.

“It is a little bit of an angle and I hit harder than I was planning, so it was a little bit stupid on my part,” the Age quoted her as saying.

“I got too excited, but I’m okay,” she said.

Southall, who was picked from 34,000 entrants as the winner of Tourism Queensland’s Best Job in the World on Hamilton Island, said that apart from that mishap, it was a stunning start to his new job.

“I’ve got to do this every day for six months. It’s so warm, there’s beautiful sand and I’ve got my girl here with me,” he said.Life is pretty sweet,” he added. (ANI)

They will be tested on a range of personal, communication and other skills.

The successful candidate, to be announced on May 6, will be selected for the 150,000 dollars six-month stint for exploring neighbouring islands, swim, snorkel, discover wildlife, and the locals.

Taiwanese candidate hot favourite for ‘best job in the world’

Melbourne, May 1 (ANI): As Tourism Queenland’s ‘best job in the world’ campaign enters its final stage, Taiwan’s wild card entry Clare Wang has been touted as the winner of Great Barrier Reef’s much-publicised caretaker job.

An interpreter by profession, Wang made it to the competition by securing more than 150,000 votes from across the world last month.

According to betting agency PinnacleSports.com, Wang has emerged as the hot favourite among all the contestants.

Simon Noble from PinnacleSports says punters clearly feel Wang’s appeal in China and Taiwan – two hugely important and growing markets for tourism in Australia – justify supporting her at odds of 5/2, reports Australian Associated Press.

The final selected candidates will travel to Hamilton Island on May 3 – in the Whitsunday island group about 900km north of Brisbane – to spend a few days working their dream job under the gaze of selectors before the winner is announced on May 6.

However, tourism officials could yet add a final twist to what has been one of the world’s most colourful global marketing ventures of modern times.

“After seeing the organisers move the goalposts once already when naming 16 finalists instead of 11, it wouldn’t surprise us to see more than one winner being named to double the exposure for Tourism Queensland,” said Noble.

The six-month stint will require the successful applicant to explore neighbouring islands, swim, snorkel, discover wildlife, and the locals on a 150,000 dollars contract. (ANI)

‘Best job in the world’ campaign enters Top 50 PR stunts list

Melbourne, Apr 17 (ANI): Tourism Queensland’s ‘best job in the world’ campaign has entered the list of top 50 public relations stunts in the world.

The list compiled by renowned public relations company Taylor Herring features the Hamilton Island’s caretaker job campaign at the eight spot.

The campaign continues to rack up international acclaim and has generated more than 100 million dollars worth of free publicity.

According to Tourism Queensland marketing executive director Steve McRoberts, while they knew they “had something special”, they were still surprised and humbled by the campaign’s continued success.

“The whole campaign has surprised us by how the world has embraced it,” News.com.au McRoberts as telling Courier Mail.

The Tour de France and the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted campaign has also made it to the list of Top 50 public relations stunts of the world.

Beatles’ 1969 rooftop gig and Madonna kissing Britney Spears at the 2003 MTV awards were among the top entries.

Earth Hour, Sir Richard Branson and Dove’s “real beauty” campaign, which used real women in its ads rather than stick-thin model also made it to the top 50. (ANI)

Hayden to bat for Queensland’s oil-spill affected Moreton Bay

Brisbane (Australia), Mar.21 (ANI): Former Australian Test opener Matthew Hayden has kickstarted a campaign to restore Queensland’s image after the oil spill that disfigured Moreton Island.

Hayden will promote Tourism Queensland’s Donate a Day to the Bay campaign after news of the devastating oil spill prompted people around the world to cancel holidays.

“We’ve seen massive cancellations, and by actually getting engaged in Moreton Island again, and Moreton Bay, I think that’s the best way Queenslanders can move forward,” the Courier Mail quoted Hayden, as saying.

“The impact that it has, just purely from a perception point of view, is enormous. How we can help is get on the bay and enjoy it,” he added.

Brisbane Marketing CEO John Aitken said unless the campaign was successful, the loss in tourism earnings could be in millions.

“The vast majority of the bay is absolutely open for business, but many tour operators are not getting the bookings they were expecting,” Aitken said.

Spill workers are still plugging away at Kawana Beach as ads hit the airwaves reassuring tourists all patrolled beaches would be open by today.

Meanwhile, the navy said it might have found 23 of the 31 ammonium nitrate containers lost from the cargo ship. (ANI)

Taiwanese interpreter is top contender Australia’s dream job

Taiwanese interpreter is top contender Australia's dream job Taipei – Taiwanese interpreter Clare Wang became the top contender for the dream job as caretaker of an unmanned island off the coast of Australia Thursday after the No 2 candidate was disqualified.

The Queensland tourism board removed Russian candidate Julia Yalovitsyna from the top-50 shortlist because she featured in an “inappropriate video.” The judging panel was also probing claims that she worked as a porn star.

With the 37-year-old now out of the picture, the gap between the Wang, who is in her 20s, and the other candidates is even wider.

Since Tourism Queensland launched the campaign to find a caretaker for six months for Hamilton Island, which is part of the Great Barrier Reef, more than 35,000 people worldwide have applied, lured by the 100,000 US dollar pay and the scenery.

By Thursday, Wang had won 143,965 votes from online voters around the world, with applicants from Canada (47,936 votes), Ireland (27,910), the United States (19,895) and France (15,163) trailing behind.

In her videotape, Wang describes herself as good at breaking the communication barrier, curious and adventurous. She says she likes swimming, diving, mountain climbing and bungee jumping. That she has never been to the Great Barrier Reef is “one more reason you should vote for me!” she says.

Media reports in Taiwan said it was a miracle that Wang has become so popular, suggesting her warmth, enthusiasm and fluency in English could have played a role.

Tourism Queensland will thin the shortlist to 11 candidates on April 2, by choosing 10 names. One of the candidates is to be chosen in an online vote.

The authority plans to interview the 11 finalists on May 3 and announce the winner on May 6. The new caretaker is due to start work on the island on July 1: cleaning a swimming pool, feeding fish and producing a blog to relay to the world her impressions of Hamilton Island as a holiday destination. Another reader said that her unique accent would be an advantage.

“She will be perfect for the job and a fresh face for Queensland holidays. Her accent is totally mind blowing,” said the reader.

However she admits that her husband, Aleksei Yalovitsyna, was involved in the criminal case.

“Yes, at the moment my husband is accused of spreading pornography. But we plan to win this case,” she said.

“The investigation has no proof. It is absolutely concocted and my personal life is nobody’s business but of my husband’s and my own,” she added.

The six-month stint will require the successful applicant to explore neighbouring islands, swim, snorkel, discover wildlife, and the locals. (ANI)
