Panaji, June 11 (ANI): The prime suspect in Nadia Torrado”s mysterious death case, Goa’s former Tourism Minister Mickky Pacheco is still on the run.

On Thursday, a sessions court in Goa rejected Pacheco”s anticipatory bail petition.

The Goa Police is seeking Pacheco”s custody to question him on the charges of destroying evidence and culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Pacheco is now likely to approach the Bombay High Court with the anticipatory bail plea. (ANI)

Now, Nepal will allow gays to marry on Mt. Everest

Kathmandu, Apr.21 (ANI): In 2007, Nepal had classified homosexuality as a crime, punishable by up to two years in prison, but now, the Himalayan nation is about to become the first in Asia to allow same-sex marriages. It is also promoting gay weddings on the world famous Mt. Everest in an attempt to become the continent’s top gay tourism destination.

“We’re completely changing this country. It’s a newborn republic — and we want to showcase this change,” The Times quoted Nepal’s Tourism Minister Sharat Singh Bhandari, as saying.

“We also want to re-establish tourism as a major industry.”

Bhandari says he is aiming to attract at least one million tourists to Nepal in 2011, more than double the number last year.

He kicked off the marketing campaign in October with a written message to the International Conference on Gay and Lesbian Tourism in Boston — an unprecedented gesture for an Asian minister.

“As the world knows, Nepal is the land of Mount Everest, world’s highest peak and the birth place of Lord Buddha, light of Asia,” the message said.

“I, therefore, would like to take this opportunity to invite and welcome all the sexual and gender minorities from around the world,” he said then.

Nepal is also due to host the first Asian Symposium on Gay and Lesbian Tourism in Kathmandu in June.

This sudden turnaround highlights the extraordinary change that has swept the country since a democratic uprising forced King Gyanendra to renounce absolute power in 2006 and the Maoists won power and abolished the world’s last Hindu monarchy two years later.

A same-sex marriage law is working its way through the Nepal Parliament after a Supreme Court ruling in 2008 that ordered the Government to safeguard the rights of “sexual minorities”. (ANI)

India to open 100 Kashmir peaks to foreign climbers

SRINAGAR, India, April 9 (Reuters Life!) – Mountaineers, rejoice: India will, for the first time, allow foreign climbers to scale more than 100 high-altitude peaks this summer in the Himalayan state of Kashmir.

Officials said the move was an effort to boost the scenic region’s ailing tourism industry, hit by two decades of separatist rebellion. Officials say 60 percent of Kashmiris are dependent on tourism.

Kashmir was once dubbed the Switzerland of the east. It was once a mecca for climbers, skiers, honeymooners and film-makers drawn to the state’s soaring peaks, fruit orchards and timber houseboats bobbing on Dal Lake in Srinagar, the summer capital.

But the number of visitors began falling after a revolt broke out in 1989 that has killed more than 47,000 people so far.

Pakistan and India have fought two wars over Muslim majority Kashmir, which is divided between the South Asian neighbours who both claim it in full. India accuses Pakistan of backing separatist militants fighting its forces. Pakistan says it only offers them political backing.

The peaks to be opened for trekking and mountaineering are situated at an altitude ranging from 3,000 meters (9,842 feet) to 7,800 meters (25,590 feet), mostly in the Eastern Karakoram mountain range of Ladakh.

“This summer 104 peaks in Ladakh region will open for trekking and expeditions which would pave the way for adventure tourism and attract foreign tourists in a big way,” Nawang Rigzin Jora, Kashmir’s tourism minister, told Reuters.

“The defence ministry, which had earlier expressed reservation on throwing open the peaks, has given its nod.”

The mountainous Ladakh region along India’s border with Pakistan and China, which has been largely free of rebel violence, is a heavily militarised zone.

“The situation is fast improving in the state and tourism is picking up, we hope a very good (tourist) season ahead,” Jora added.

Officials say violence involving Indian troops and separatist militants has declined since a peace process began in 2004 between India and Pakistan.

But people are still killed in daily shootouts and occasional bomb attacks.

Many foreign governments still advise against travel to Kashmir, where six Western tourists were infamously abducted while trekking in 1995. Of the six, a Norwegian was beheaded, an American escaped and the rest are presumed dead.

Tourism operators say opening new peaks will help Kashmir tourism but they remain sceptical about a lasting peace in the region.

“Climbers will definitely find plenty to love in this remote and stunningly beautiful region, and this will help our business in a big way,” Umar Tibatbakal, a tour operator said. “But Kashmir is unpredictable, violence can break out any time.”

Govt banking on Darwin air travel to double

The Northern Territory Government is hopeful that Darwin’s airline passenger traffic will double in four years despite a refusal by Qantas and Jetstar to help pay for the airport’s expansion.

The airlines knocked back the airport’s $60 million expansion plan, refusing to pay higher fees.

Launching the Territory Government’s aviation strategy today, Tourism Minister Malardirri McCarthy says she still expects Darwin’s air traffic to double by 2014.

She admits airlines make commercial decisions despite Government subsidies

“Often you get the airlines you want and sometimes you don’t,” Ms McCarthy said.

Airport chief executive, Ian Kew says $10 million has been spent on two new airplane parking bays to help cope with an expected 10 percent growth in passengers next year.

“We would expect to see an extra 200,000 odd passengers,” Mr Kew said.

But he says without millions more spent on Customs and Immigration services and baggage facilities, there will be bad peak hour congestion.

Earlier this year Ms McCarthy complained to Jetstar about the airline’s cancelled and delayed flights.

But she says the Government’s decision to entice Jetstar to Darwin with subsidies was not a mistake, and it is now trying to attract other carriers.

“We would like to see Malaysian Airlines [in Darwin] but it is not the only airline. Naturally there have been letters sent to Etihad,” Ms McCarthy said.

Mr Kew said he also backed the Government’s decision to target Jetstar and has not complained about its service standards.

There’s nothing like another tourism campaign

Tourism Australia has launched its latest international marketing campaign and it is certainly a change from “Where the bloody hell are you?”

But will the inoffensive “There’s nothing like Australia” draw in the international visitors?

Tourism bosses are calling on the public to promote Australia through social networking.

The idea is that Australians share their favourite place or experience because they are the experts on what makes the country unique.

The campaign starts with a competition from next month calling on Australians to upload photos to a new website, and complete the line: “there’s nothing like …”

Tourism Minister Martin Ferguson launched the new tagline at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney.

“When you think about it, it is not about the Australian Government in partnership with Tourism Australia and state and territory organisations, nor with the private sector picking winners,” he said.

“It is about us as a nation giving the Australian community an opportunity to actually promote their local regions.”

Tourism Australia’s Andrew McEvoy says the new slogan has a strong impact.

“Say it to yourself. I think it is one of those lines that is true,” he said.

“It is a big idea and it will build over time. There’s nothing like Australia.”

Room for more visitors

Tourism Australia says Australia bucked the international trend during the global financial crisis and there is optimism that growth will continue.

Tourism Australia’s general manager of marketing, Nick Baker, says the number of tourists coming to Australia is solid.

“This year, for 2009 over 2008, we were flat and the rest of the world was at least a minus four figure, so we think that we are already moving into an area where we have some potential for growth,” he said.

“We haven’t actually got some figures to say what we think it is going to move up to but certainly we are looking to see growth on the 2009 figures, which was 5.6 million people.

“It depends a lot on what happens with the global economy and how it is working, but certainly we are seeing an opportunity for us to move forward and to get growth during the course of 2010.”

But Mr Baker says it takes more than just one ad to entice visitors.

“There is no doubt that you need ads to get the message out there. There is no doubt that you need something to get the emotional reason for visiting Australia,” he said.

“But what we are doing with this campaign is adding a whole lot more layers to it.

“So rather than being a TV-centric campaign, this is an idea-centric campaign, and by that I mean we have got this idea about Australians inviting the rest of the world to come to this country and showcasing what they think is unique about it.”

Test of time

Mr Ferguson says the most important thing about the new campaign is that it will last.

“Ministers and governments come and go but you have got to have a strategy that survives irrespective of a change in government or irrespective of a change in minister, and that is what today is about,” he said.

“It is about us picking up and running with it and not picking winners. We as a community will sell Australia for what it is – a unique, wonderful place.

“[We will tell the world to] actually come on down and have a look at it.”

The managing director of the Australian Tourism Export Council, Matt Hingerty, has been involved in tourism for about a decade and this is his fifth campaign launch.

He says the problem with previous campaigns was not that they caused offence but more they could not last the distance of time.

“I’m not in the camp that says that they were necessarily failures,” he said.

“In polite diplomatic circles, “Where the bloody hell are you?” may have not gone down that well but the Irish backpackers loved it. It was actually a financial success.

“But the problem is we don’t stick to them.”

‘There”s nothing like Australia’ tagline to promote tourism Down Under

Melbourne, March 31(ANI): The new tagline of Tourism Australia is “There”s nothing like Australia”.

The earlier caption by model Lara Bingle, “So where the bloody hell are you?”” got banned by the Brits and could not be translated to the Japanese, making the authorities choose a fairly simpler one this time.

Tourism Australia managing director Andrew McEvoy suggested the tourism campaign aims to showcase the country as a great tourist destination.

“Australians want to tell the world passionately and proudly about our great country,”” News.com.au quoted McEvoy as saying.

And he described the new tag line as “a line for the ages””, hoping it to last for next 10 years.

Meanwhile, Federal Tourism Minister Martin Ferguson has asked Australians to participate in the campaign by submitting pictures and descriptions of their favourite local destinations on a new website www.nothinglikeaustralia.com starting April 15.

Apparently, the first stage of the campaign will cost just 4 million dollars, but Tourism Australia expects to invest at least 150m dollars over the next three years. (ANI)

New faces in Bass

There are some new faces in the north-east Tasmanian electorate of Bass but the distribution of seats looks likely to be unchanged.

So far two Labor members, two Liberal and one Green have been elected.

Former federal Liberal MP Michael Ferguson topped the polls in Bass with more than 14,000 votes.

“I’m reflecting what people have said to me are their priroties, plus I’m coming from a family background,” he said.

Sitting Liberal Member Peter Gutwein and the Parks and Tourism Minister Michelle O’Byrne will return to Parliament.

In 2006 the Greens’ member Kim Booth was elected on preferences.

This time he won a quota on his own, which he attributes to the escalation of the pulp mill debate.

“Bass has said no to Gunns pulp mill,” he said.

The fifth member for Bass looks likely to be Labor candidate and former school prinicpal Brian Wightman.

Increased tourism numbers expected

The State Government is confident that its new tourism campaign ‘Experience Extraordinary’ will be more successful than previous attempts to increase tourism numbers to West Australia.

The Tourism Minister Liz Constable says the first ‘Extraordinary Taxi’ campaign, which was launched at Cottesloe Beach this morning, is an innovative and effective way to show all that WA has to offer.

The taxi and its Bunbury driver, Doug Slater, will drive the winners of a competition 6,500 kilometres around WA to tourism destinations.

Dr Constable says the campaign utilises the internet to promote the State.

“Using the internet where we know 77 per cent of people plan their holidays and even book their holidays and plane fares and so on through the internet.”

“Using the internet in the way we have from the very beginning is the key to the success of this campaign.

Northern Territory plans travel documentary to promote Top End tourism

Melbourne, Sept 7 (ANI): The Northern Territory is set to follow in the footsteps of Tourism Queensland to tap Chinese market, and promote Top End as a holiday destination.

The Top End is less frequently visited, and less well-known place overseas.

Two Chinese women have been chosen to travel across the Top End, while their adventures will feature on China’s largest TV station with around 520 million viewers – as well as online.

The Chinese film crew will follow the adventures of Shu Yan and ski instructor Bei Liu over the next fortnight.

Both have been chosen out of thousands of hopefuls to travel across the northernmost point on the continent of Australia.

“This campaign has had incredible success in promoting the Territory as a holiday destination to the emerging market of China,” the Northern Territory quoted Tourism Minister Chris Burns as saying.

“There were more than 35 million visitors to the website resulting in the 36,000 competition entries,” he added.

Burns insists that the NT spin-off would result in a five-part documentary of Liu and Yan as they dove with crocodiles, swam in waterfalls, and got hits of indigenous culture in Western Arnhem Land.

The idea of using a competition and online blogging to tap into the massive Chinese market followed Queensland’s Best Job in the World campaign.

The NT Government has contributed 75,000 dollars to assist in the production of the TV documentary series, including accommodation and tours for the two winners and the TV crew.

“Northern Territory wasn’t that famous as another destination before, but I hope after this event the TV documentary more people are getting to know the Northern Territory for the unique culture and natural beauty,” said Yan. (ANI)
