Drake NY concert cancelled after security concerns

NEW YORK (Billboard) – A second free Drake concert in New York has been canceled after security concerns were raised by the city’s police department.

The Toronto rapper, whose debut album recently opened at No. 1 on the U.S. pop chart, was in talks to perform in Central Park on July 16 as part of ABC’s “Good Morning America” summer concert series. According to the Daily News, the plans were scrapped after the NYPD told the city’s Parks Department to bolster its security efforts.

A spokesperson for ABC told the newspaper, “We were interested in having Drake perform, but he was never officially booked,” while a rep said that there was a “booking in place.” The cast of Green Day’s Broadway musical “American Idiot” will play “Good Morning America” on July 16 instead.

Drake’s first free New York show was scheduled to take place at South Street Seaport on June 15, the same day his album “Thank Me Later” was released. The event was shut down at the last minute, however, after an estimated crowd of 10,000 swelled to 25,000.

UPDATE 1-Magna investors need info before vote- regulator

TORONTO, June 25 (Reuters) – Magna International Inc (MGa.TO) must provide shareholders with more information in order to proceed with a vote on a plan that would pay its founder around $900 million for giving up his controlling shares, a Canadian regulator ruled on Thursday.

The Ontario Securities Commission ruled that it was “not persuaded” that the auto parts maker’s plan was abusive to shareholders. But it said Magna must amend the information circular sent to investors if it wishes to move ahead with a vote on the deal.

“Whatever views we may have as to the terms of the proposed transaction and its fairness to shareholders, we believe that it is the shareholders of Magna that should ultimately decide whether the proposed transaction proceeds,” the provincial securities regulator said in a written ruling released late on Thursday.

“If Magna wishes to proceed with shareholder approval of the proposed transaction or any similar modified transaction, it must amend the circular in accordance with this decision.”

Magna did not immediately respond to an e-mail seeking comment on the decision.

Magna’s Class A shares jumped more than 20 percent in May after the world’s No. 3 auto parts maker announced the plan that if passed, would release the iron grip Frank Stronach has held on the company he founded in the late 1950s in a garage.

The company proposes to pay Stronach $300 million in cash and 9 million class A shares in order to give up his controlling class B shares. Magna’s Class A shares closed at C$73 on Thursday.

Each class B share carries 300 votes, whereas each class A share carries one vote. That allows Stronach to control the company while owning just a small part of the equity.

CHALLENGES TO DEAL

Earlier this month two major Canadian pension funds came out swinging against the plan, calling the payoff “unreasonable” and “fundamentally unfair”.

The proposal was then challenged by staff at Ontario’s provincial securities regulator, who requested a hearing and alleged the proposal was “contrary to the public interest and harmful to the integrity of the Ontario capital markets.”

But a three-person Ontario Securities Commission panel ruled it was not convinced the proposed deal was abusive to shareholders.

“Abuse has been characterized by Commission decisions as something more than unfairness. A transaction such as this is not abusive simply because the price proposed to be paid is considered by certain investors to be outrageous,” the ruling said.

“We are not persuaded that the proposed transaction is abusive of shareholders or the capital markets within the meaning of securities law.”

The panel laid out a long list of information it said should be provided to shareholders before they would vote on the deal, including “a clear articulation” of how management and Magna’s board decided on the amount to pay Stronach.

The original shareholder vote was scheduled for June 28 but looked set to be pushed back.

The ruling said that if Magna wishes to proceed with the proposed deal, it must deliver a copy of the amended circular to the regulator at least five days before it is sent to shareholders. This would give the regulator’s staff time to raise any concerns about the level of disclosure.

Based on pre-voting results ahead of the regulatory ruling, shareholders had appeared ready to approve the plan overwhelmingly.

Stronach, 77, came to Canada from Austria as a young man with just a couple hundred dollars in his pocket and built the company into a global player. Magna came close to buying Chrysler in 2007, and nearly had a deal to buy Opel from General Motors Co [GM.UL] until GM decided to keep the European car maker.

But some shareholders have long complained about Stronach’s control of the company, his “consulting fees,” and his side projects, including the now-bankrupt Magna Entertainment horse track and entertainment venture.

The day Magna announced the plan to pay off Stronach, several analysts raised their price targets for the company, and its shares gained 14 percent. ($1=$1.04 Canadian) (Editing by Lincoln Feast)

Demi Lovato confirms she’s dating Joe Jonas

New York, Mar 16 (ANI): Actress Demi Lovato has confirmed that she and fellow Disney star Joe Jonas are dating.

Lovato, 17, broke the news during a radio interview on ‘The Billy Bush Show’ on March 12, when she was asked if she had dated a Jonas brother.

“Umm, maybe,” the New York Daily News quoted her as replying.

Bush grilled her until she admitted that the brother in question was Joe, 20.

“So, you’re dating him now?” Bush asked.

To which Lovato replied, “Yeah, he is my best friend and he is incredible.”

Meet the man who dumps your lover for you over the phone – and posts it online!

Toronto, Mar 5 (ANI): Bradley Laborman calls and informs people that their lovers have dumped them, as part of his job.

The ‘IDUMP4U.com’ operator from Mount Pleasant, Iowa has made splitsville smoother with his unique e-business.

Laborman charges 10 dollars for the favor.

He also posts some of the heart-wrenching, sleazy and just-plain-uncomfortable recordings of the calls on his YouTube channel.

Laborman says he has got both young and old clientele and it is primarily female.

“I’ve had college kids, I’ve had older people. I think I had somebody who was at least 40 in a breakup situation. Surprisingly, it’s a lot more female – a lot more females are dumping males,” Globe and Mail quoted him as saying.

The 32-year-old man insists that people often find it impossible to break-up.

He added: “It’s fear. I had one guy who couldn’t do it because every time he tried to do it, he’d end up having breakup sex with her and get back together.

“He didn’t have the willpower to break up with her. I think a lot of them have tried a couple times to break up with the person, and it’s just not getting through to them.”

Apparently, Laborman finds it therapeutic to post the break-ups online.

He said: “It’s therapeutic. Somebody knows a person like that. I put it on there because if you think you’re in a bad relationship right now, listen to some of these dumps and realize you could have it a lot worse off.” (ANI)

The 23-year-old actress is currently promoting new film ‘Jennifer’s Body’ at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Although the ‘Transformers’ star never complains about being the hottest female star in Hollywood, she does seem a little tired of all the attention she is getting.

Asked whether playing a high-schooler made her nostalgic for her own high school days, Fox dodged the question saying that she’d instead like to “go back to a time where I didn’t have any responsibility.”

In fact, she seemed wary of the exposure she has had recently.

“I feel like I cling to my privacy and I don’t need to expose myself further to people,” Fox News quoted her as saying. (ANI)

Pak Qaeda hand in 2006 trans-Atlantic bomb plot revealed

London, Sep.8 (ANI): New evidence put before a British jury during a retrial of three Brit Muslim convicts suggests that the men used code words to discuss their plans with an al-Qaeda fixer based in Pakistan.

The e-mails and conversations suggest that the plot was in its final stages, possibly days away from execution in 2006.

The seven daily flights highlighted by the three plotters were: 14.15 United Airlines Flight 931 to San Francisco; 15.00 Air Canada Flight 849 to Toronto; 15.15 Air Canada Flight 865 to Montreal; 15.40 United Airlines Flight 959 to Chicago; 16.20 United Airlines Flight 925 to Washington; 16.35 American Airlines Flight 131 to New York; 16.50 American Airlines Flight 91 to Chicago.

According to The Telegraph and the Daily Express, the batteries the gang planned to use as part of their detonators were bought in Pakistan.

An ingredient in the bomb mix was the orange soft drink Tang – sold in Pakistan – which had a high sugar content to aid the explosion.

A British intelligence source said: “The use of drink bottles sold in Pakistan and batteries sold in Pakistan underline the plot’s ties to that country. The foot soldiers were from Britain – but the organisers were in Pakistan.”

A security source said of the conspiracy: “It was very clever and the airport scanners would not have picked up the devices at all.”

Prosecutor Peter Wright told the Woolwich Crown Court in South East London how the would-be bombers were “a cell of home-grown terrorists activated and directed by a designated leader in Pakistan.”

That was confirmed by a government source in Pakistan, who said the plot was believed to have originated “with al-Qaeda in Afghanistan.”

Seized e-mails showed the chain of terror stretched from there, across the lawless border to Pakistan, to London and to the woods of High Wycombe where explosives were buried.

The aim was to mirror the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, which killed 259 passengers and 11 in the Scottish town.

Aliases exposed during the trial revealed the terror kingpin in Pakistan was dubbed “Paps” or “Papa”.

Ali called himself Imran and Chacha and also set up email accounts in the bogus names Tippu Khan and Jameel Masood.

His co-conspirators used aliases such as Fatty, Arro and Nigga.

Hydrogen peroxide was known as “aftershave”, police surveillance as “skin problems” and martyrdom videos were referred to as “wedding tapes”.

It is also thought that the bomb makers received training at an al-Qaeda camp in Pakistan.

A mystery Pakistani, thought to be a top al-Qaeda envoy, made contact with the three would-be suicide bombers during a flying visit to Britain in June 2006.

Experts who tested the explosive mix on the aircraft were horrified.

A witness said: “It was absolutely devastating.” (ANI)

Novel minimally invasive surgery for treating spinal cancer patients

Washington, Sep 8 (ANI): Doctors at Toronto Western Hospital have come up with a new minimally invasive, outpatient spine surgical procedure for treating cancer that has spread to the spine.

It is believed that almost 40-50 percent of metastic cancers end up in the spine and the most common primary cancers to spread to the bones of the spine are breast and lung cancer.

Spinal tumours can drastically affect a patient’s quality of life and result in pain and reduced mobility.

A spinal tumour or a growth of any kind can impinge on nerves, leading to pain, neurological problems and sometimes paralysis.

The new procedure involves a small incision in the back (the size of a loonie) in order to remove the tumour and stabilize the damaged spine.

Other than providing a shorter recovery time, its benefits also include allowing patients to receive radiation treatment shortly after surgery.

Traditional surgical methods involve a longer and more painful recovery process, thus making patients to wait weeks before resuming radiation treatment.

The combination of surgery and radiation leads to better outcomes and quality of life. (ANI)
