Y.S.Rajasekhara Reddy’s brief profile

Hyderabad, Sep 3 (ANI) : Dr. Yeduguri Sandinti Rajasekhara Reddy famously known as Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy or YSR was a popular political figure in the South Indian politics.

Born in Pulivendula, Andhra Pradesh to Y. S. Raja and Jayamma Reddy on July 8, 1949.

YSR nurtured an interest in politics since his student days. Reddy was elected as the president of his college student’s union while studying medical science in M.R Medical College of Gulbarga University, in neighboring Karnataka.

He was also president of the House Surgeon’s Association of S.V. Medical College, Tirupati,

YSR also served as Medical Officer at the Jammalamadugu Mission Hospital for a brief period. In 1973, he established a 70-bed charitable hospital, named after his father Y.S. Raja Reddy at Pulivendula.

In 1975 Reddy was made the President of the Cuddapah District Youth Congress Committee. In 1978 he made his debut to Andhra Pradesh Assembly from his birthplace Pulivendula and retained the seat for six terms. Reddy’s hold on the constituency was intact even during the Telagu Desam Party’s strong wave in 1983.

Reddy was one of those rare politicians of the country who never tasted defeat in electoral politics.

Reddy developed the Cuddapah region by pumping in funds and creating a solid infrastructure, making the constituency its neighbors’ envy.

In 1980 YSR became Minister of State for Rural Development, in the Tengutri Anjaih Government. In 1982 he became the Cabinet Minister for Excise in the B.Venkataram Reddy Government and also held the charge of Education and Health department in K.Vijay Bhaskar Reddy Government in 1983.

YSR had earned the title of ‘Cuddapah Tiger’ for his aggressive role in the state assembly.

In 1983, after the Congress party’s tragic rout in the Andhra Pradesh, then Congress chief Indira Gandhi appointed YSR as the state party president at the age of just 34.

His dream of leading the state was shattered when he could not stop the TDP’s march to victory in the 1984 Lok Sabha and 1985 Assembly elections. Reddy quit his position of APCC president.

In 1989, he re-entered the political arena and was elected to the Lok Sabha from Cuddapah. He represented the constituency in four Lok Sabha.

In 1992, Reddy tried to succeed N. Janardhan Reddy as Chief Minister, when the latter had to quit following strictures against him by the Andhra Pradesh High Court for granting permission en masse to 20 medical and dental colleges. But the then Congress president and Prime Minister, P. V. Narasimha Rao, opted for his old friend Kotla Vijayabhaskar Reddy against YSR for Chief Minister.

But luck came his way again when Congress president Sonia Gandhi choose YSR to lead the party in Andhra Pradesh in 1999.Though Reddy could not succeed in stopping the TDP – BJP alliance from winning the 1999 election, the year 2003 proved to be his defining moment.

In 2003, YSR undertook a three month long paadayaatra, of nearly 2000 kilometer across the state. That helped him to become Chief Minister.

The Indian National Congress won a thumping victory both in the general and assembly elections of 2004 ensuing that Reddy became the 23rd Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh.

Reddy came back to power in 2009 with a slogan “Development and the credibility.” In the elections, Congress secured the required majority in the assembly with 156 seats and also won 33 Lok Sabha seats.

Reddy also was Leader of Opposition in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly for five years between 1999 and 2004.

Reddy was married to Vijaya Lakshmi. They have a son, Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, a politician, and a daughter, Sharmila. Jagan Mohan is representing Cuddapah Constituency in the 15th Lok Sabha. He also owns Jagruti Publications and a new channel Sakshi TV. (ANI)

‘Ustad Kale Ram’, an unheard of achiever

Jalandhar (Punjab), Aug 22(ANI): Ustad Kale Ram, a great exponent of tabla from the Punjab Gharana, a style and technique of tabla playing that originated in Punjab, has brought laurels to the country through his performances across the world, though has lived a life without being in the limelight.

Ustad Kale Ram was fascinated with the sound and rhythm of the tabla at a very young age and became passionate about exploring new medium through the musical instrument.

“I was passionate about learning Tabla since my childhood. Because of that I wasn’t able to concentrate on my studies. I quit studies and told my parents that I wanted to take up my hobby as my profession. I got a job in Amritsar when I was young and I was very happy that I could play Tabla at my work place as well as at home,” Ustad Kale Ram said.

As each gharana is traditionally set apart from the others by distinctive aspects of the compositional and playing styles of its exponents, it provides a unique blend when played in fusion. And Ustad Kale Ram tried to explore these avenues, as he performed with a list of renowned personalities.

“I got a chance to perform with eminent artists like Ustad Amjad Ali Khan Sahab, Pt. Hari Prasad Chaurasia, Nirmala Devi ji, Laxmishanker, Ustad Salamt Ali Khan Sahab, Pt. Jasraj ji, Pt. Krishnarao Shanker, Patvardhan ji in the big cities like Mumbai, Tirupati, Madras, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad. I feel very happy whenever I am reminded of those moments,” Ustad Kale Ram said.

In addition to performing in numerous festivals and concerts, Ustad Kale Ram has been teaching tabla to budding artists at Jalandhar, aiming to pass on the art so as to enable the current generation to learn and combine aspects from multiple gharanas to form their own unique styles.

“The reason why I like Tabla is because of the rhythm. I feel rhythm has a great association with life. A rhythm has such a great pull that if somebody is busy doing some work and hears some music then he/she starts moving to the beat of the rhythm,” he added.

Some think the era of gharana has effectively come to an end, as the unique aspects of each gharana have been mostly lost through the mixing of styles and the socio-economic difficulties of maintaining lineage purity through rigorous training, however eminent musicians like Ustad Kale Ram ji keep the art alive.

A master boasting amounts of traditional compositional knowledge and expertise, an achiever, who keeps the art alive, an art that is dying a slow death. (ANI)

Several candidates in Madhya Pradesh whose tickets have been finalized have started performing religious rituals, including tantrik rites, hoping for success.

‘Most of the tantrik rituals are performed in secret as there is a strong belief that they don’t work if they are performed publicly,’ said a priest.

Leaders of the Congress, including Madhya Pradesh party chief Suresh Pachauri, are seeking the blessings of various deities for the success of the party.

‘Pachauri has already visited the Pitambara Peeth during Navratri. His supporters have organised yagnas in the towns of Dwarka and Ujjain though Pachauri’s candidature is yet to be finalized,’ a Congress leader told IANS.

Prostitution of boys at India’s pilgrim sites called rampant

Prostitution of boys at India's pilgrim sites called rampant New Delhi – Sexual exploitation of boys in three of India’s major pilgrimage centres is pervasive and on the rise, a study released Tuesday said.

The study focused on male children in prostitution at Hindu temple sites of Puri in eastern Orissa state and Tirupati and Guruvayoor in southern Andhra Pradesh and Kerala states.

It was conducted by Ecpat, an international network that aims to stop sexual exploitation of children, and Indian non-governmental organization Equations.

The study found that in these centres, development of tourism had led to sexual exploitation of children, in the form of child abuse, child trafficking, child prostitution, child sex tourism and child pornography.

“There is a dearth of information on male child sexual exploitation and prostitution due to the assumption that most sexual exploiters are men and therefore their victims are women or girls. However, this is not true,” said S Vidya, a coordinator with the Equations.

“The double standards that society has about homosexuality and the fact that it is criminalized in India only makes the problem less visible.”

In Tirupati, which receives mostly Indians, a survey of boys aged between 6 and 18 years revealed that sexual abuse of boys is rampant due to demand from domestic tourists. Pressure on boys to earn a living for the family was cited as a reason why they were forced into prostitution.

“Family members saw less risk when male children are involved in selling sex as compared to girls, as the social stigma is less and the fear of pregnancy does not exist,” the report said.

In Puri, boys interviewed reported that both domestic and foreign tourists were involved in the sexual exploitation.

“A number of massage parlours and health clubs have mushroomed in Puri that primarily cater to foreign and domestic tourists, where prostitution takes place involving both adults and children,” the study said.

In Guruvayoor, child sexual abuse was less visible but discussions with locals revealed that several boys were involved in prostitution, selling sex to domestic tourists and locals.

The groups urged the Indian government to set up agencies to safeguard children and tighten laws to stop child sex tourism, including severe punishment for convicted offenders. (dpa)
