Malaysian Home Minister clears sentence of whip-for-beer-drinking model

Kuala Lumpur, Sep. 6 (ANI): Malaysian Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein has “cleared” the Prisons Department to cane part-time model Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno, who is being sentenced for drinking beer.

Last week, department director-general Zulkifli Omar and a woman officer came to Home Minister’s office to demonstrate the caning sentence.

“She tapped the back of a chair with the cane. There was little force involved and it was not going to inflict pain, not even like the caning carried out in schools in those days.

“I am now satisfied that the caning can be carried out by the department if the court decides to proceed and enforce the sentence,” the Star Online quoted him, as saying.

Hishammuddin said that although he was now satisfied that the department was able to conduct the caning, he still felt it had no experience to do so.

“This is because the woman (Kartika) will be the first to be caned. Four men who have received caning sentences by the Syariah Court are appealing their sentences,” he said.

“That is not their purview. It is the judicial process which decides that. If the caning sentence is to be imposed, it is their duty to carry it out fairly,” he added.

Kartika, a 32-year-old mother-of-two, was fined 5,000 ringgits and ordered to be whipped six times for drinking beer in a hotel in Cherating last year.

Her sentence has been deferred until after Ramadan.

Several parties, such as the Bar Council, have called for the sentence to be annulled.

Kartika’s father, Shukarno Mutalib, when contacted, said the family was happy to hear that the department was able to handle the caning.

“Alhamdullillah. Kartika wants it over and done with,” he said. (ANI)

Former Malaysian PM says ‘whip-for-drinking-beer’ model’s sentence ‘too harsh’

Petaling Jaya (Malaysia), Aug. 26 (ANI): Former Malaysian Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohammad has expressed concern over the whipping sentence given to part-time model Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno for drinking beer, saying the punishment is “too harsh.”

Dr. Mohammad questioned the fairness of the harsh decision in his blog post, asking if Islam didn’t allow mercy for first time offenders, The Star reports.

“Is not Islam merciful to first-time offenders?” Dr Mahathir asked, adding that fairness and consideration were the main tenets in Islam.

“We will be celebrating our independence this year by flogging a Muslim woman for drinking beer under Syariah law,” he added.

“Although the story has gone across the globe, Muslims should not worry about other people’s perceptions when dealing with matters of our religion despite the negative or positive image it might bring,” he noted. (ANI)

Malaysian model mum spared cane for beer drinking

Kuala Lumpur, Aug.24 (ANI): A woman who was to be caned here today for drinking beer in a bar, has been spared by religious authorities.

“The warrant cannot be executed,” Sharafuddin Zainal Ariffin, the head of enforcement for the state of Pahang’s Islamic Affairs Department.

Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno, 32, would have been the first woman to be caned in Malaysia.

According to the Courier Mail, the Muslim model said she would now plan a pilgrimage to Mecca, and seeking solace in prayer.

She was earlier sentenced to receive six strokes of the cane after pleading guilty to drinking alcohol at a hotel nightclub last year.

Kartika cried when the verdict was handed down last month but in an interview at her home in a small Malay village, she was composed about her fate.

“Sometimes I feel sad and stressed as I have tarnished my family’s name. But now after spending time reading the Koran, I feel calm and am not afraid of being caned,” she said.

The part-time model and mother of two, who lives in neighbouring Singapore, had called for her punishment to be carried out in public. (ANI)

Malay Islamic court orders caning of model for drinking beer

Kuala Lumpur, Aug.19 (ANI): An Islamic court has ordered the caning of a Muslim part-time model after she admitted to drinking beer in ahotel night club.

Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno was also fined 5,000 ringgit (856 dollars) for her offence, Sky News reports.

Shukarno, 32, was caught consuming alcohol when police raided a hotel nightclub in Pahang state last year.

She pleaded guilty and has been sentenced to six lashes with a rattan cane.

The Islamic court said the punishment must take place within seven days from next Monday.

Kartika will be held in a women’s prison until then and afterwards released “as soon possible”, prosecutor Saiful Idham Sahimi said.

Caning is administered on the buttocks and usually breaks the skin leaving permanent scars.

But a lighter cane than the one used on men will be used on Kartika with the purpose to “educate” rather than punish, Saiful said.

“This is the first case in Malaysia. It is a good punishment because under Islamic law a person who drinks commits a serious offense,” he said.

Kartika has said she wants to be caned quickly so she can get on with her life with her husband and children. (ANI)

Model Rajni Bharti booked for forcing teen maid into prostitution

MUMBAI: The Versova police have booked a small-time model for forcing her 17-year-old maid to solicit clients at various places across Mumbai, Pune and Surat. No arrest has been made yet.

The accused, Rajni Bharti, claimed to have acted in television commercials. A native of Delhi, she lived with her husband and two children in the Yari Road area.

“The victim’s aunt had been working for the Bhartis for a decade. She asked the victim to join her when Bharti was pregnant with her second child in 2007,” an official said.

The abuse started two months after the girl started working for the family. “When her aunt had left for Madh Island and Bharti’s husband too was away, the victim was offered a soft drink laced with sedatives. The girl felt groggy and slept. The next morning, she realised that she had been raped when she found bloodstains on her dress. She recalled having seen a stranger in her room. When confronted, Bharti identified the man as Nandu and admitted to having accepted Rs 50,000 from him. She threatened the girl against disclosing the incident to anyone,” an officer said.

Over the next few months, Bharti continued to force the victim to solicit clients at different places in Mumbai.

In January this year, Bharti took the victim to Pune on the pretext of going for a film shoot. For seven days, the girl was forced to solicit clients at a flat. On one occasion, Bharti took her to a hotel in Pune. Cops raided the hotel the same night and the victim was apprehended with three other girls.

The next day, Bharti came to the court with a lawyer and paid the victim’s bail amount. They then returned to Mumbai.

“On May 8, Bharti and the victim left for Surat. After soliciting eight clients there at the behest of one Bharat, the victim took ill. But Bharti refused to acknowledge her condition and decided to send her to Ahmedabad with two servants. On the night of May 18, the group, including Bharti, was waiting at Surat railway station to travel to Ahmedabad. The victim managed to slip away and return to Mumbai by another train,” an officer said.

The victim then confided in her aunt, who immediately informed Bharti’s husband. He expressed shock and claimed ignorance. He accompanied the two women to file a police complaint of rape, sale of minor for prostitution and criminal intimidation against Bharti, Nandu and Bharat.

The man who sleeps with other people’s wives to save their marriages!

London, Apr 12 (ANI): He’s hot, sexy and presumably a ‘relationship guru’: Meet Daniel Prendergast whose taste in women is tad bit different – they are all married.

The 34-year-old hunk, a photographer by profession, only dates married women, and credits himself with fixing his lovers’ marriages, rather than wrecking them.

Daniel, who’s also a part-time model, claims ladies turn to him for an ego boost and to reignite the spark in their marriage, because their husbands have neglected them in mind, body and soul.

“I’m always there with a sympathetic ear – unlike their husbands. If the women have marital problems, I’ll try to point them in the right direction and make them feel good about themselves again,” News of the World quoted him, as saying.
Daniel had his first affair with a married woman 10 years ago. He was working as a barman in a top London hotel when he started dating Carla, an attractive businesswoman in her early 40s.
They are much better company than single women. And they’re better in bed too,” he said.

After a couple of other flings, Daniel was hooked on the thrill and secrecy of his affairs. In the last five years he has been out with 55 married women.

Daniel believes he gives his lovers something that’s missing in their marriage – whether that’s a shoulder to cry on or sex.

“Because they know I’m not after a relationship, they hopefully make a go of their marriage once I’ve made them feel better about themselves. It’s about helping a woman believe she is sexy, attractive and good company,” he said. (ANI)

Facebook may help catch cheating boyfriends

London, April 8 (ANI): Facebooking may be a great way to meet strangers but it could also give you the shock of your life. That’s what happened with Michelle Westby, 21, when she looked at a stranger’s photos on Facebook only to find her own boyfriend cheating.

The receptionist and part-time model had clicked on fellow model Toni Colville’s album to get ideas for her fashion poses, reports the Sun.

She then decided to take a peek at Toni’s holiday photos and discovered images of her cuddling Jason Jennings-Brown, 23, who Michelle had been dating for six months.

Through the social networking site, Michelle got to know that the love rat had been two-timing her with unsuspecting Toni, 21.

And Michelle, from Stevenage, Herts, fears he may have duped other women.

She said: “Toni had some great pictures. Scrolling through them I saw she had an album entitled ‘Holiday in Egypt’, which I opened. I admit looking at the personal pictures was sheer nosiness, but what else is Facebook for?

“Clicking through them my hand suddenly froze over the mouse. Staring back was my boyfriend, Jason, with his arms around this pretty stranger.

She added: “I felt sick and couldn’t believe it. What are the chances of looking at a total stranger’s pictures and seeing your boyfriend cheating in them?” (ANI)
