“Futurama” bounces back (a little)

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – “Futurama” halted its ratings slide and rebounded a bit Thursday night. The Comedy Central show bounced 10% from last week to 2.2 million viewers for its 10 p.m. airing. That’s a good sign for the show, whose audience shrank for the first few weeks of its basic cable revival.

Thursday cable was led by USA’s “Burn Notice” (5.6 million) climbing back up to a number it hasn’t seen since its second episode this summer, followed by a strong showing by USA’s “Royal Pains” (5.2 million).

“CSI” showrunners renew deals

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Two “CSI” franchise showrunners have renewed their deals, each signing long-term production agreements with CBS TV Studios.

Entertainment | Television

“CSI” chief Carol Mendelsohn and her “CSI: Miami” counterpart Ann Donahue have re-upped for four more years.

Mendelsohn’s contract includes running both “CSI” and the upcoming CBS legal drama “The Defenders,” which will air on Wednesday nights at 10 p.m. this fall.

A four-year contract is considered a longer-than-usual agreement for a showrunner deal, but “CSI” and its spinoff are considered staples of the network’s lineup. This fall, “CSI” will continue to anchor the network’s Thursday night, with star Laurence Fishburne recently renewing his agreement for another season. “Miami” will shift from its Monday perch to Sundays.

Moreover, “CSI” is sold in more than 200 territories and is considered the most popular drama series in the world, according to a Eurodata TV Worldwide survey.

Separated in train, reunited in copter

Tiya Haldar, a four-month-old baby who escaped unhurt from the Jnaneswari Express accident, is lucky to be back with her mother Ranjana (30) and elder sister Sujata (5), who were both injured critically. Shifted from the accident site by helicopter to Midnapore on Friday, they were transferred to SSKM Hospital in Kolkata on Saturday.

In fact, it was in the helicopter that Tiya was joined with her mother and sister as Ranjana and Sujata were unconscious when they were rescued from the S-3 compartment, and the security personnel failed to identify Tiya’s parents after she was taken out from the damaged compartment. Although they were rescued by different groups, the three were shifted by the same helicopter from the accident site. Ranjana recognised her baby lying in the lap of one policeman when she regained consciousness.

“Tiya is fortunate that she was shifted in the same helicopter along with her mother and sister. Otherwise, Tiya would have lost her mother too,” said Niranjan Roy, Tiya’s maternal uncle. While Ranjana was hurt in the leg, Sujata suffered a head injury.

However, Tiya lost her father, Bablu. Five of her family had boarded the train at Howrah on Thursday night. Bablu’s younger brother Shankar — they both worked in a private company in Mumbai — was also killed in the accident.

Now, Tiya is spreading happiness in CIB ward of the SSKM Hospital under the care of nurses, who fed her and played with her on Sunday.

As for Ranjana, she enquired about her husband repeatedly. “But she was not told the truth as per the doctor’s advice,” Roy said.

Wedding party goes into mourning

Mumbai, May 29 — The Guptas were in the mood to celebrate. There was a wedding in the family on Monday and the family was busy with last minute preparations. Until they received the news of the death of two family members in the train derailment in West Bengal on Friday. Prema Gupta (45) and Harekrishna Gupta (23), who were coming to the city to attend the wedding, died in the accident, which is suspected to be the handiwork of Maoists. Jairam Gupta (30), Harekrishna’s brother, reached Kurla terminus on Friday morning, soon after he heard about the incident. His relatives from Howrah, his native place, had called to inform him. Prema is Jairam’s sister’s mother-in-law. “Every one was waiting for their arrival, so that we could celebrate the wedding with greater enthusiasm,” said Gupta, who was trying hard to maintain his composure while he organised air tickets to fly to Kolkata and get to the accident spot. But tears flowed down his cheeks as he spoke. Family members said they had last spoken to Prema and Harekrishna before they boarded the train at Howrah at 9.30 pm on Thursday. “I don’t know who is behind the incident. But whoever it is should die a million deaths for such a heinous crime” said Surendra Pathak, a friend of Guptas. The mood at the Guptas’ Antop Hill home in Wadala was in stark contrast with the festive look the house wore until Thursday night.

Several relatives and friends, who had come for the pre-wedding rituals, ended up mourning. Relatives said the wedding may be postponed.

Two teenagers await news of their parents

Mumbai, May 29 — The Sawaliwalas were sipping their morning tea and watching the news on television when news of the derailment of the Howrah-Kurla Gyaneshwari Express began flashing on screen. Hamir Sawaliwala (45) and his wife Asha (41) were on that train. They were returning to Mumbai. “I just hope my brother is alive somewhere,” said Hamir’s cousin, Ajay Panicker (28), a customer care executive with Mitashi. The Sawaliwalas lived in Tilak Nagar near Chembur with their two teenaged children, Dhaval and Archana, both college students. Hamir worked with an advertising agency. The couple had left for Kolkata 10 days ago to attend a family function. “Several relatives of Asha are in Kolkata and they had planned a get-together. They left the children in Mumbai because their classes were about to begin,” Panicker said. Until afternoon, the Sawaliwala family had only received news that Asha was injured but stable. “I had contacted my relatives at Kolkata who found out that my sister-in-law is being treated at a hospital,” said Panicker. But there was no news of Hamir. “There is lot of confusion here,” said Panicker, a resident of Chembur. “I have been waiting at the terminus since morning and I still don’t have a clear picture about Hamir’s whereabouts.” Panicker contacted the Kolkata service centre and found that Hamir’s name was on the first list of injured passengers. At Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, however, his name does not figure even in the second list. “They have not even released the names of the deceased,” said an annoyed Panicker.

Panicker had last spoken to Hamir on Thursday night. “Hamir had called to inform me that he was boarding the train at Howrah. We spoke every day,” he said.

‘I felt a jolt. Everything turned upside down’

Howrah, May 29 — Grief and chaos reigned at Howrah station on Friday. Survivors of the Mumbai-bound Gyaneshwari Express who reached the station more than 12 hours after the mishap recounted the moments of horror.

Abdul Mondal (32) was sleeping in the S4 compartment when the train derailed. “I suddenly heard a thud and felt a huge jolt,” said Mondal, a resident of West Bengal’s North 24-Parganas district.

“After a few seconds when I came to my senses, I saw everything upside down. The compartment had turned turtle.

” He somehow managed to drag himself out through an emergency window. “I saw people lying like lumps of flesh inside the train bogie.

” Mondal, who boarded the train on Thursday night from Howrah station, was given first aid at Midnapore state general hospital and sent to Howrah by Purulia Express on Friday afternoon. Debashmita Majumdar stood beside Mondal, with an injured leg.

“The screams of agony of the injured are haunting me,” said Majumdar, who was heading to Mumbai in the ill-fated train. There was chaos at Mumbai’s Kurla Terminus too, with people waiting for news of relatives.

Ajay Panicker (28), who works in a call centre, tried desperately to get news of his cousin, Hamir Sawaliwala (45), and Hamir’s wife, Asha (41), who were returning to Mumbai on the Gyaneshwari Express.

Girl criticises dad’s cooking, gets burned

New Delhi, May 29 — In a gruesome incident, 18-year-old Bindu was burned alive by her father Jagannath (50) apparently for having criticised his cooking. Bindu suffered 90 per cent burns in the incident and is fighting for her life at the Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital.

The incident took place around 10 pm on Thursday night in Yamuna Vihar in East Delhi. “Jagannath told us that he had cooked mutton for his family on Thursday.

During dinner, Bindu complained that the mutton was too spicy and not cooked properly. This began an argument between the two,” said a senior police officer on the condition of anonymity, as he is not authorized to speak to the media.

In a fit of rage, Jagannath apparently hit Bindu and then, in front of his other five children, poured kerosene on her. “Then he set her on fire and tried to flee.

But some neighbours, who had come out on hearing the commotion, caught him,” added the officer. Jagannath, an MTNL employee, has been arrested.

Courtney Love cosies up to Uma Thurman’s ex

New York, May 18 (ANI): Rock musician Courtney Love has added fuel to rumours that she is involved with actress Uma Thurman’s hotelier-ex Andre Balazs after she was spotted cosying up to him.

Love, 45, had denied rumours that she was romantically involved with Balazs, saying that he was nothing more than an “old friend” and her “sometimes landlord”.

But their recent behaviour at Balazs’ uber-exclusive club Boom Boom Room inside the Standard Hotel suggested otherwise.

“They came to the Boom Boom Room together late Thursday night and initially went their separate ways,” the New York Daily News quoted a source as saying.

“At first, Courtney was chatting with a couple of guys about her music. But eventually, she and Andre snuck out to the smoking deck together and were hugging and being touchy.

“They both seemed very sweet and genuine,” the source stated.

But when Balazs was approached by a woman he knew, Love is said to have lost it.

“When Courtney and Andre decided to call it a night and hail a cab, Andre was stopped by a woman he knew,” the source revealed.

“As soon as he started talking to her, Courtney hit the roof. It was obvious to everyone that the woman was a business associate, but not to Courtney.

“She acted like a toddler! It got so bad that the woman Andre was talking to got really embarrassed, and he had to apologize and walk away. By then, Courtney was crying and screaming.

“Andre started shouting right back at her. They eventually got into a cab, but the few people left on the street at that hour were in shock,” the source added. (ANI)

Delhi CM”s security beefed up after threat call

New Delhi, May 8 (ANI): The security of Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has been tightened following a call received by the Delhi Police late on Thursday night that Dikshit is under threat for the next 72 hours.

It has been reported that the security at CM House has been beefed and the police is leaving no stones unturned in trying to trace the call. (ANI)

Miliband may attempt to take over from Brown: Report

London, May 7 (IANS) With the Labour party prepared for electoral losses, Foreign Secretary David Miliband was closely looking at the voters’ verdict as he may challenge Gordon Brown, a media report said Friday.

The Sun reported that Thursday night saw Miliband preparing to strike as a disaster was predicted for Labour at the general elections.

He is a favourite to succeed Brown and has received support from former prime minister Tony Blair and and Business Secretary Peter Mandelson.

Miliband won from the South Shields constituency with 52 percent of the votes. Conservative candidate Karen Allen stood second while Liberal Democrat Stephen Psallidas was third.

Miliband’s allies are keen that MP Jon Cruddas becomes Miliband’s deputy in what they call a ‘dream ticket’ for the leadership.

The media report said that he was urged to have a proper contest for the leadership, instead of an unelected take over like Brown when he succeeded Blair.

Shahzad boasts of ties to numerous global terrorists

New York, May 7 (ANI): The Times Square car-bomb suspect, Faisal Shahzad, is boasting of his connections to global terrorists, giving authorities a who”s-who list of Islamic mad men he”s met with, sources said Thursday night.

Faisal Shahzad, 30, has waived his right to a lawyer and is chatting so much about his ties to anti-American fanatics that federal investigators are rolling their eyes, the New York Daily News quoted the sources, as saying.

“Maybe it”s true, but none of it has been verified at all,” a U.S. counter-terrorism official briefed on the interrogation told the paper.

Shahzad has said that he met with radical Yemeni-American cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, exchanged e-mails with Fort Hood, Texas, and met with Taliban leader Hakimullah Mehsud.

“He”s just blabbing away,” the official said. (ANI)

ARIA Awards return to Ten

Network Ten and the ARIA Awards have worked out their differences and are going to try working together again.

“What can we say? We missed each other,” Ten’s chief programming officer David Mott said in a statement.

The music industry awards night had been partnered with Network Ten for 15 of the previous 16 ceremonies when the Nine Network took it on for last November’s broadcast.

But only 700,000 Australians tuned in for the Thursday night ceremony, down from 1.09 million viewers the year before.

It was one of the least-watched broadcasts in years.

“The Ten Network has been our loyal partner for many of our last 24 years and it’s an absolute thrill to be renewing our relationship once again,” ARIA chairman Ed St John said.

Mindy McCready says she first had sex with Roger Clemens at age 21

New York, Apr 30 (ANI): In a soon-to-be-released sex tape, Mindy McCready has revealed that baseball ace Roger Clemens struggled with erectile dysfunction “a lot of the time” and the two first had sex when she was 21.

McCready”s attorney Adam Dread had told the Daily News last month that he was seeking to get an injunction to prevent the tape”s release, but said Thursday night he and his client were “moving on.”

Vivid Entertainment will release the tape Monday, although portions are already on the Internet.

In the snippets, a male interviewer asks McCready about the former Yankee’s bedroom performance and when the two first had sex.

It was in 2008 that it was first reported that McCready met Clemens when she was 15— a point that McCready re-confirmed last August during an interview.

Clemens was a married Red Sox ace when they met in 1991 and McCready spent the night with Clemens at his hotel.

In the tape, she has said that she watched a “Walter Matthau” movie with Clemens that night and that the two took a shower together.

Asked if Clemens was good in bed, McCready said at one point in the tape, “When he could get it up.”

It was reported last month that during McCready”s interview with the FBI in conjunction with Clemens” perjury investigation, the feds asked McCready about whether Clemens experienced erectile dysfunction—a common side effect for steroid users.

Clemens has denied ever using performance-enhancing drugs. (ANI)

Fev played down gambling blues: Ratten

Troubled AFL star Brendan Fevola denied he was a gambling addict when asked by his former club, Carlton.

Blues coach Brett Ratten said he had heard rumours about Fevola having a gambling problem before the star was traded to Brisbane at the end of last season.

“We heard rumours when Brendan was at the club and we asked the question and he denied that,” Ratten said in Adelaide on Friday.

Fevola admitted on Thursday night to Channel Nine’s AFL Footy Show he has had a gambling addiction for several years and is undergoing counselling.

“It is good that he has come out and admitted it,” Ratten said.

“So hopefully he gets over that really quickly and we wish him well.”

Ratten said it was a fine line between enjoying a punt and being a problem gambler.

“It’s a line that you don’t know all the time,” he said.

“It’s hard to know everyone’s personal business but we asked the question and he denied it so that is all you can do, try and be there for support and hopefully it goes well for him into the future.”

The Carlton coach said it was difficult for clubs “when players keep things personal”.

“I suppose (that is) when the relationship between the club, the (player’s) manager and the player is really important,” he said.

“And that is something the club is always working pretty hard at, to get that relationship close with the player managers so then hopefully the information is passed around.

“I think the manager and the football club have got a responsibility to the player to try and assist him through difficult times, whenever it is, that is something that is ongoing.

“I suppose the honesty of players and something that might have happened behind the scene that they don’t like or they are not happy about, if they could come forward it would be great.

“… Maybe the responsibility of everyone there associated is to make sure that the player doesn’t get this lump sum dropped into his lap and I suppose (that’s) the responsibility for all of the families, the clubs, and the managers.

“But it’s down to the individual isn’t it, he makes choices in life and hopefully they make the right ones.”

AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou admitted on Fairfax radio today he suspected last year that Fevola had a gambling problem.

Demetriou said that hearsay led him to believe Fevola could be in trouble.

“There were sort of some murmurings last year, and even I think it was mentioned in the media,” he said.

“So when those sorts of things start to generate a bit of momentum, you start to think there could be something in it.”

No seatbelt puts 2yo in intensive care

A two-year-old boy is in intensive care after an Adelaide road crash in which he was not wearing a seatbelt.

The boy was sitting on his mother’s lap in the back seat of a car when it collided with another in Angle Vale Road at Hillier on Thursday night.

Senior Sergeant Paul Isherwood says the parents face serious criminal charges if their driving is found to have been negligent.

“Already this year we’ve had seven drivers and two passengers who weren’t wearing their seatbelts killed in road crashes,” he said.

“We certainly try to get the message out there every time we can and we have seatbelt campaigns where the police will target that type of offending but some people just won’t learn.”

Most UK seats to count votes as soon as polls close

Most British constituencies plan to count votes as soon as polls close in next month’s parliamentary election, meaning the outcome should be clear by the morning of Friday, May 7.

Only 25 of 650 seats plan to delay the count until Friday morning, that number having dwindled in recent weeks, the Electoral Commission watchdog said.

Legislation passed before parliament was dissolved this week means that officials are required to take “reasonable steps” to begin the count within four hours of polls closing.

The election will be held on Thursday, May 6 and polls close at 2100 GMT.

A delay in announcing a result could further unsettle financial markets which are jittery over the prospect of an inconclusive election in which neither ruling Labour or the main opposition Conservatives win an overall majority.

It is a tradition of British political life for the counts to start at town halls and leisure centres across the country within minutes of polls closing and there is an unofficial race for the honour of being the first seat to declare a result.

Some officials wanted a delay to save costs on staff overtime and to allow more time to comply with stricter rules on postal ballots where dates of birth and signatures will have to be checked.

Exit polls on Thursday night will give the first indication of the election outcome, but a close contest could be settled by the results in a few marginal constituencies where the main parties enjoy similar levels of support.

Witnesses sought for Kalgoorlie bashing, robbery

Police have released more details about two men accused of robbing a man the night he was found dead in Kalgoorlie.

Last Friday, 49 year old Grant Charles Jesser was drinking at the Exchange Hotel in Kalgoorlie.

Hours later he was found dead in an alley on Maritana Street.

26 year old Gregory Cullen was charged with causing grievous bodily harm but it has now been revealed Mr Jesser was also robbed during the evening.

Detective Sergeant Paul Robinson says police are trying to piece together his final movements.

“The last time that Mr Jesser was actually seen alive was leaving the Exchange hotel where there was an incident with another person. The next time he was located he was deceased, in the alleyway near National Australia Bank.”

Police say the two incidents are not related.

Two Kalgoorlie men, aged 19 and 20, have been charged with stealing and will face court next month.

Detectives are appealing for anyone who was in the area on Thursday night to contact police.

Sergeant Robinson says there were a lot of potential witnesses because the town was hosting the International Miners Games.

“I believe that there are people out there that did witness this incident and I would appeal to them to please come forward.”

Britain faces long wait to learn election outcome

Britons are likely to face an unusually long wait to learn the outcome of what is expected to be the closest parliamentary election in almost two decades.

Forty-two of the 650 seats plan to delay the counting of votes until the morning after polls close, the Electoral Commission watchdog said on Wednesday. Officials in a further 69 seats have yet to decide when to start counting ballots.

The election will be held on Thursday, May 6 and polls close at 2100 GMT. It is a tradition of British political life for the counts to start at town halls across the country within minutes of voting ending and there is an unofficial race for the honour of being the first seat to declare a result.

However, officials in some areas have decided to delay the count to save costs and to comply with stricter rules on postal ballots where dates of birth and signatures will be checked.

Justice Secretary Jack Straw has introduced a clause in a bill going through parliament which would force officials to start the count within four hours of polls closing. However, it is unclear if that bill will be passed before parliament is dissolved on Monday.

Opinion polls show the opposition Conservatives ahead of ruling Labour but by an insufficient margin to guarantee an outright majority in parliament.

Financial markets are nervous about an inconclusive election which they fear could lead to policy paralysis and hamper efforts to tackle a record budget deficit.

Exit polls on Thursday night will give the first indication of the election outcome, but a close contest could be settled by the results in a few marginal constituencies where the main parties enjoy similar levels of support.

LL Cool J’s interview scrapped from Sarah Palin’s TV show

New York, April 1 (ANI): Sarah Palin’s TV debut as the host of a new interview series will not use footage of rapper LL Cool J, it has been announced.

Palin, 46, will be seen hosting the premiere of “Real American Stories,” Thursday night.

The first episode was to air some interviews with celebs along with the stories of “ordinary Americans that have led extraordinary lives”.

However, Fox News has decided to cut the interview footage of LL Cool J after he complained the channel was recycling an old interview with him for the show.

Earlier this week the rapper Tweeted that Fox News was “misrepresenting” him by using a 2008 interview in its promotions and adverts for the show.

Publicists for the country musician Toby Keith, also listed as a guest for Palin’s show, made a similar charge.

“I have no idea what interview they are using. Toby’s talked to Fox a number of times, and I had no idea that this was going to be on Sarah Palin’s special. Fox has never contacted me — not now, not when they were putting this together, not at all. I have no idea what they’re using,” Keith’s rep Elaine Schock, told New York Times over the telephone.

According to Schock, Keith had not been interviewed by Fox News since 2008 or early 2009.

Asked if Mr. Keith was ever interviewed by Palin, Schock replied: “Absolutely not.”

Carlton doesn’t need Fev for motivation

Forget beating Brendan Fevola, Carlton is desperate to upset Brisbane on Thursday night to erase the heart-breaking memories from last year’s finals implosion.

The scars of the 2009 elimination final defeat to the Lions are still raw for the Blues, who gave up a 30-point final-quarter lead to lose by seven.

Carlton coach Brett Ratten admitted the loss continues to haunt his team and will be the prime motivating factor, well beyond overcoming Fevola, in its round two return to the Gabba.

“We don’t have to dig up the tape (to motivate players),” he said.

“The look on the players’ faces and in their eyes after the game, it’s something that sits with them.

“You look at Marc Murphy and (Kade) Simpson, those types of players, and how much it hurts and that’s what footy’s about.

“That was one that was a bitter taste and sat with the players and was a motivating force during the pre-season.”

The April Fools Day clash pits Blues discard Fevola against his old team-mates for the first time in the AFL premiership and could eclipse the record Gabba crowd of 37,224 set in 2005.

Ratten has not spoken to his former spearhead since the club traded him to Brisbane following his alcohol-fuelled Brownlow Medal antics.

“If he wants to ring me he can ring me,” he said on Wednesday.

Ratten will not address his players about how to deal with Fevola, saying it was “up to individuals”.

Michael Jamison, who would have spent countless training sessions matching up on Fevola in Melbourne, has the duty of minding him in the Gabba goal square, while either Paul Bower or Bret Thornton would take Jonathan Brown.

It is Brown who Carlton fears more after the Lions skipper was in brilliant form to kick five goals and take 14 marks in Brisbane’s 32-point opening round win over West Coast.

Ratten said his defensive preparations did not alter much from when Daniel Bradshaw lined up at full-forward.

“It maybe went to Brendan a lot more than Bradshaw, they went to him 27 times which was probably more than we did in games,” he said.

“Whether it’s Bradshaw or Fevola, Brown and his team-mate down there are dangerous and Brown’s form the other night was outstanding.”

Carlton is unchanged from its 56-point thrashing of Richmond while the Lions have promoted Cheynee Stiller in place of Sydney recruit Amon Buchanan.

Brisbane gained a boost on Wednesday morning with vice-captain Jed Adcock passing a fitness test on his injured ankle.

“For him to get up is a nice little bonus for us,” Lions coach Michael Voss said.

Both coaches predicted a tight contest on the basis of the rivals’ history of thrilling finishes in the last two years with Carlton winning three of the last four which have all featured final-quarter comebacks.

Ratten hoped an extra two days preparation time for the Blues would be telling for the visitors as Brisbane has not been able to train in their short five-day turnaround.

“Our games have been full of momentum in previous encounters so hopefully the momentum is with us with the run in the last quarter,” Ratten said.

“The experts have picked us out of the eight this year and picked Brisbane in the top four so we’ll get a good gauge where we’re at by the end of the game.”
