ICC failed to deal with Muralitharan’s chucking: Richardson

Christchurch, Aug 24 (ANI): Former New Zealand opener Mark Richardson has accused the Sri Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan of breaching the 15 degree flexion rule.

Richardson said Muralitharan often bends his arm beyond the 15-degree norm even though he felt it was not the spinner but the indifferent International Cricket Council (ICC), which was at fault.

“There is no easy way to put this, no soft way to broach it, so here goes – Muttiah Muralitharan is throwing the ball,” Richardson wrote in Herald on Sunday.

“I know he’s been tested, re-tested, tested again and cleared. And I know, with the special makeup of his limbs to the naked eye, his action looks worse than it is. But, for goodness sake, half of cricket is now not watched with the naked eye, thanks to the invention of super-slow-motion cameras, hot-spots, snicko and hawk-eyes.

“Many of the slow-motion replays I’ve seen of Murali have only strengthened my conviction he is exceeding the 15 degrees bending and straightening allowance. Is it not meant to be the other way round? Isn’t the hi-tech equipment meant to alleviate my fears?” he asked.

Unlike former New Zealand captain Martin Crowe, who often flays Muralitharan, Richardson didn’t blame the offie, but opined ICC had failed to deal with the issue.

“I don’t blame Murali for this situation. Murali can only do what he does – and what he does he does as a champion, and unlike the other great spinner of my time, Murali does it with good grace and gentlemanly conduct,” Richardson said.

“The problem lies with the inappropriate way in which the ICC has decided to police throwing. A player is suspected of throwing and then, for want of a better term, tested in a laboratory. We’ve all seen the pictures of Murali lit up with bulbs. To his credit he volunteered for this. Apparently he proved he wasn’t a chucker.
“But did he really? What he proved is that he can bowl within limitation, not that in the heat of battle he actually does,” The Dawn quoted him, as saying.

He said that the way the ICC has gone about dealing with this situation, too many bowlers now appear to have suspect actions and can operate for too long before there is any reaction. (ANI)

‘Bride bouquet throwing’ tradition causes plane to crash in Italy

London, July 15 (ANI): The bouquet throwing tradition turned into tragedy at an Italian wedding, after throwing of the flowers caused a plane to crash in Suvereto, near Livorno in western Tuscany.

A couple had rented a small jet to fly over their guests at Montioni park, and drop the bride’s bouquet to women standing below.

But, according to Corriere della Sera, the wedding turned sour when the flowers apparently got sucked back into one of the engines, leading the plane to catch fire and explode, reports The Telegraph.

The aircraft subsequently plunged into a field next to a hostel below, injuring one passenger seriously.

Isidoro Pensieri, who was responsible for throwing the wedding bouquet, suffered “facial and cranial trauma” and multiple fractures to both legs. (ANI)

Widespread violence in poll-bound West Bengal, one killed in Mukherjee’s Jangipur constituency

Jangipur (West Bengal), May 7 (ANI): One CPM worker was reportedly killed in the Jangipur Lok Sabha constituency in West Bengal on Thursday, from where incumbent External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee is contesting this year’s general elections.

According to reports, activists of the CPI-M and the Congress are engaged in clashes across West Bengal’s Murshidabad District. There has been a report of a street explosion as well as sporadic incidents of stone pelting.

Earlier in the day, at least one activist of the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) was reportedly killed and two Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M) activists were injured in clashes outside a polling booth in Nandigram.

Television reports said that the incident took place in the Gokulnagar area of Nandigram District in West Bengal despite the presence of a high security detail.

Police confirmed incidents of bomb throwing, ransacking and looting.

Among the 17 constituencies spread over seven districts in West Bengal, Nandigram and Singur, the epicentre of the land stir that turned the tables on the ruling CPM in the 2008 panchayat polls, have been declared the most sensitive.

Singur falls under the Hooghly Lok Sabha seat and Nandigram is part of Tamluk. Both Singur and Nandigram will play a key role in determining the results of these two Lok Sabha seats.

Considering the sensitive nature of the booths in Singur and Nandigram, the Election Commission (EC) has decided to deploy special observers in these two seats. They would move around the polling stations within the jurisdiction of the two assembly segments.

CPM sitting MP Lakshman Seth is seeking re-election from Tamluk. Trinamool Congress has fielded its strongman Subhendu Adhikary against Seth. The Nandigram Assembly segment is likely to give Adhikary a comfortable winning margin.

The administration had deployed 220 companies of central forces and 38,000 armed guards to man polling booths, especially the “sensitive” ones in these 17 constituencies.

The Opposition is banking on the jot (alliance) chemistry to rework the poll arithmetic in areas where it was way behind in the last polls. The Left Front is eyeing the cracks within the Opposition to recover some of its lost ground.

The second phase of polls is likely to throw up surprises in at least five seats where Left Front had an easy going earlier. The CPM is confident about the three seats in Burdwan, while the Opposition is expecting major breakthroughs in East Midnapore, Nadia, Birbhum, Howrah and Hooghly.

Over 2.17 crore voters in the 17 Lok Sabha seats will vote on Thursday. The Lok Sabha seats, that go to polls on Thursday, are Jangipur, Berhampore, Murshidabad, Krishnanagar, Ranaghat, Howrah, Uluberia, Serampore, Hooghly, Arambagh, Tamluk, Kanthi, Burdwan East, Burdwan-Durgapur, Asansol, Bolpur and Birbhum.

West Bengal home secretary Ardhendu Sen said on Wednesday that 4195 of the total 20,975 polling stations where elections will be held on Thursday have been identified as sensitive booths. He also said that all booths would be manned by armed forces. Altogether, 38,000 state armed police personnel would be deployed along with central forces. (ANI)

Dolchi Holi of Bikaner

Bikaner, Mar 10 (ANI): With Holi or ‘Festival of Colours’ just around the corner, celebrations have started in full swing across India.

The festivities known, as ‘Dolchi Holi’ in Bikaner is unique and distinct from other places as it is organised as the day of reconciliation between two particular Hindu castes who lived as foes for generations.

Legend has it that about 400 years ago members of Harsh and Vyas castes decided to mitigate their differences and turn friends after being motivated by the then Kings. The gesture of new friendship was expressed by throwing water in Dolchi, a shoe-shaped leather container, at each other. Since then the festival is celebrated as a reminder of the unforgettable reunion.

The throwing of water at each other in Dolchis is considered auspicious, as people from far off places arrive here just for getting splashed on their back at least once.

“Just like Braj Holi and Latthmaar Holi of Mathura, we splash each other with water filled in leather Dolchi. This is a way to celebrate the festival with peace and harmony and revel in some fun,” said Hiralal, a reveler.

The festivities conclude with the revelers indulging in playful abusing and throwing colours at each other.

They said they would love to continue this tradition of Dolchi Holi for years to come.

“This is a friendly way of celebrating Holi and we would like to continue playing it for years to come and would want that people across the country also celebrate Holi in this fun filled manner,” said Vitthaldas Harsh.

The festival of ‘Holi’, which will be celebrated on March 11 this year, brings together people from all classes and age groups, distribute sweets and take out processions, dancing to tunes of drums in a milange of colours. By Jethmal Sharma (ANI)

German shoe-thrower pleads not guilty over attack on Wen Jiabao

German shoe-thrower pleads not guilty over attack on Wen Jiabao London- A German student who hurled a shoe at Chinese premier Wen Jiabao during his recent visit to Cambridge University in Britain pleaded not guilty to the charge of committing a public order offence Tuesday.

Martin Jahnke, a 27-year-old graduate student at the university’s pathology department, appeared at Cambridge Magistrate’s Court Tuesday before being released on bail. His trial date has been set for March 10.

Jahnke was arrested on February 2 for throwing a shoe at Wen, who was giving a lecture to students. The missile missed the Chinese leader by about a metre.

China’s foreign ministry Monday urged Cambridge University to expel Jahnke. “Education is the best help for a young student,” a statement released via the Chinese embassy in London said. (dpa)

Lack of projectile weapons might have lead to Neanderthals’ extinction

Washington, Jan 15 (ANI): A trio of new studies on prehistoric weapons has suggested that though the Neanderthals made sophisticated weapons and tools, they lacked the projectile weapons possessed by early humans, which probably contributed to their eventual extinction.

According to a report in Discovery News, the missing technology, along with climate change and competition with arrow-shooting humans, may have played a part in their die off.

“While we are not suggesting that modern humans were directing projectile weapons against Neanderthals, it is certainly possible that at times they did so,” said Steven Churchill, co-author of one of the research papers.

Churchill, an associate professor of evolutionary anthropology at Duke University, and colleague Jill Rhodes compared Neanderthal fossils with those of prehistoric and modern humans, focusing on the shoulder and elbow.

“When engaged in overhead throwing activity, such as throwing a baseball, or a spear, this increases the movement arm of the muscles and gives greater strength and velocity to the throw,” said Rhodes, a visiting assistant professor of anthropology at Bryn Mawr College.

She explained to Discovery News that modern athletes, like baseball pitchers and handball players, often show a characteristic backward displacement at the shoulder joint.

Usually just one joint shows this, since most people have a preferred throwing arm.

The anthropologists found this telltale skeletal characteristic in the early modern European fossils, but not in the Neanderthals.

“Neanderthals probably hand threw spears over short distances, but perhaps they simply never got around to inventing means of propelling spears or other projectiles long distances,” said Churchill.

“Or perhaps their short, squat body build with short and massive limbs was not conducive to using throwing-based hunting technology,” he added. (ANI)

Two arrested over school shooting

Two arrested over school shootingBudapest – Hungarian police have arrested two men in connection with the fatal shooting of a headmaster and his deputy at a school in Budapest, Hungarian police announced on Thursday.

Hungary was shocked on Wednesday evening by reports that a masked gunman had opened fire at a special-needs school in Budapest, killing the headmaster and his deputy.

The school treasurer and a security guard were subsequently arrested and charged with murder, police said. The two men had been sacked the same day over an embezzlement affair.

The headmaster, Jozsef Takacs, 62, had arranged to meet the treasurer, named as 36-year-old Gabor D, at the school on Wednesday evening. They planned to discuss the technicalities of the treasurer’s dismissal.

Takacs took his deputy, Laszlo Papp, 32, with him. The treasurer turned up with the 52-year-old security guard Tamas K.

Papp had a dictaphone in his pocket to record the discussion. The police told the press on Thursday that the whole incident had been recorded, and two shots thirty seconds apart could be heard.

The security guard ran to a nearby greengrocer after the attack saying that a man wearing a mask had opened fire at the school.

The police said the security guard, who has a criminal record for fraud, was wounded during the incident.

He left a trail of blood to the room that had contained the missing server for the school’s CCTV system.

Tamas K admitted throwing the computer into the Danube river, but denied being in the room when the shots were fired. (dpa)

Stephanie Rice finally puts partying to rest in favour of training

Melbourne, Jan 8 (ANI): Australian swimmer Stephanie Rice has put all her partying ways behind and thrown herself into training for national selection trials in eight weeks.

The 20-year-old Olympic winner was seen partying at the Paris Hilton’s New Year Eve bash and was later seen letting her hair down at the 21st birthday bash for fellow swimmer Kenrick Monkat The Eastern in Bondi Junction.

According to sources, Monk’s birthday bash was simply a case of the fellow swimmers enjoying one of their last opportunities to party before throwing themselves into training, reports the Daily Telegraph.

“It was a swimmers” party and it was the chance for a lot of those swimmers to have one of their last night”s out,”” said the source.

The source also denied claims that Rice had to be carried out of the venue after a night of partying, insisting it is “terribly false””.

“She was the most amazing and friendly person and if anyone asked for a photo she was happy to pose for a pic and have a chat,”” said a partygoer.

“She wasn”t drunk and just loves to dance and it was great to see her letting her hair down,” the partygoer added. (ANI)

Brit church removes cross saying it scares kids and puts people off

London, Jan 7 (ANI): The cross depicts the Christian faith all over the world, but a church in Britain has decided to remove it as it is too scary for kids and also puts people off.

Reverend Ewen Souter, of Horsham, West Sussex, decided to remove the crucifix in his church after he found it to be “a horrifying depiction of pain and suffering”.

The 10ft sculpture was removed from St John’s, and to the anger and bewilderment of some in his congregation, an ultra-modern stainless steel cross was placed.

“The crucifix is the oldest and most famous symbol of Christianity,” the Mirror quoted one long-standing member of the church as saying.

“Pulling it down and putting up something that would look more at home on the side of a shopping centre is not the way to get more bums on seats. Next they’ll be ripping out the pews and putting sofas in, or throwing out all the Bibles and replacing them with laptops. It’s just not right,” the member added.

But Rev Souter, who has been vicar at St John’s since 2001, believes the modern new cross, which was designed by artist Angela Godfrey, will present “a positive message of hope”.

“The crucifix expressed suffering, torment, pain and anguish. It was a scary image, particularly for children. Parents didn’t want to walk past it with their kids, because they found it so horrifying,” he said.

“It wasn’t a suitable image for the outside of a church wanting to welcome worshippers. In fact, it was a real put-off.

“We’re all about hope, encouragement and the joy of the Christian faith. We want to communicate good news, not bad news, so we need a more uplifting and inspiring symbol than execution on a cross,” he added. (ANI)

New York, Jan 3 (ANI): Jamie Foxx was hit by ice cubes after the singer infuriated clubbers by playing his new single three times in a row.

While partying at club Liv in the Fontainebleau for LeBron James” birthday earlier this week, the 41-year-old star “asked the deejay to play his new single three times in a row,” the New York Post quoted a source as saying.

However, Foxx seemed unfazed by the fury and kept on dancing.

“He just stayed on top of the deejay booth and danced for another half hour,” the source said. (ANI)
